Who makes a good disc utility now that Norton has stopped?

I have always used Norton Utilities in the past and it worked very well (I find the "horror stories" on the boards very curious). Since they no longer make this fine product, who does? I tried Tech Tool... worthless junk. Is Discwarrior anything close to what Norton was? Anything else?
Just for the record, I feel I have almost no need for disc utililities anymore. OSX seems to just take care of itself and never have any problems. However, I'm kind of the tech support guy for a number of friends. Some are into the p2p stuff (Limewire and flakey programs like that) and I like to be prepared to help them out. Myself, I only do the occasional defrag (I'm a recording studio engineer - it's still convenient sometimes), but it's nice to be prepared if something does go wrong.

I know that are some people that have used Norton without problems. For me it corrupted all four of my disks. When I called Symantec for support they verified I was running the correct version for the level of operating system I was using at that time. They then told me to replace all of my disks because they were totally useless.
I came to this forum and discovered that it might be Norton so I remove everything from Symantec from my system. I got Tech Tools Pro and DiskWarrior. It took them two days to fix my disk but I was able use the disks after they had been repaired by TTP and DW.
You say Tech Tools is junk. Could you please explain why you say that? Personally I have found TTP to be a very useful tool.

This comes up a lot these days.
Practically speaking, there are really four options for the Mac platform: Toast (<$100), Adobe Premier Productiom ($1,600 to buy or $50/month to rent), find a copy of Final Cut Studio from 3rd party (+/- $1,000 new) or a boxed edition of iLife to get iDVD ($50 - $90 on Amazon new).
The other question everyone has is how many OS versions before iDVD or FCS breaks? No one knows, but Apple has said they're no longer supporting these legacy apps. Of course, no one is mandated to upgrade to a new OS unless they buy a new computer. So if it works on a system, stay with it as long as it makes sense.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
          Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
          Envelope Index
          ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

I think you needed to have pages '09 in it's own folder (usually named iWork '09) when you upgraded to Pages 5.0. Luckily I had. Then the easiest way to edit a document in Pages '09 is to right-click (CTRL Click) it in the finder or on the desktop and select Pges '09 from the context menu.
Another reason why you'll need Pages 09 is if you need to edit a document created in a version of pages before '09. These won't open in Pages 5.0. (Yes, really. It's almost unbelievable) You have to open them in '09 and then save them. This saves them in Pages '09 format, which can be opend in Pages 5.0.

You will need to find a third party solution for online storage in order to share things like photos with others. Some popular solutions to this are dropbox and sugarsync.
You cannot sync non-iCloud email accounts across your iOS devices and computers unless they are IMAP accounts like iCloud. If they are IMAP accounts, you will do it in the same way as you have always done.

If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes), then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

Ahhh, a number of anti-virus programs have issues with programs that use libraries that may look like virus signatures. Hardware damage can cause software problems in programs open when the hardware problem occurs by causing electrical impulses that destroy parts of the software. The short answer is it would be a good idea to have a really good technician make sure the computer is correct and then transfer the content of the hard drive to a clean hard drive and reinstall programs that don't pass checksum tests.
The total of what you say is a system that could use a careful going over...make sure you are working from a stable and solid base.
