Who manufactured my hard drive ?

Hello,
I have a dell studio xps 8100 desktop bought in 2010.
Windows 7 home premium,
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 870 @ 2.93GHz,
memory 16 gb,
Display Adapters: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460,
* 1.5TB SERIAL ATA (7200RPM 3.0 Gb/s) 16 MB Cashe. ST31500341AS.
How can I know who is the manufacturer of the Hard Drive ?
any recommendations for an ssd ? how big ?
Many Thanks,
Rami.

I like the Crucial MX200 I would advise getting at least a 256 GB SSD. If you want to use Dell Factory settings on the SSD see here:

  • The manufacture name in iMac (early 2007) hard drive?

Can some one tell me what manufacture the hard drive in iMac (early 2007)is?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It will vary from machine to machine, Apple uses different vendors for hard drives. How you can find out what your machine has is open System Profiler and click Serial-ATA on the left. It will then tell you the model HD you have. By copying and pasting that info into Google you can easily find out information about the drive.
If you are looking to replace the drive any 3.5" SATA drive will work. One vendor that is helpful for replacing HD's is OWC. Their internal HD page is:

  • Time Capsule hard drive failure

    Hello, all
I have a 500 GB Time Capsule that is about four years old. I use it to back up my MacBook Air and I also use it for file storage. Recently the HD has become erratic, in that it appears on Finder under Shared sometimes but not always. The wireless router part is still working fine. I can usually get the HD to reappear but it disappears again eventually. I can get it back by unplugging and replugging the TC, but I tried a hard reset and that didn't bring it back. I have backed up all the files I had stored on there as advised by the Apple Store Genius (see next paragraph).
I took it to the Apple Store and the Genius said that he thinks it is failing. He was not able to see the TC/HD wirelessly but was able to access it by plugging in a cable. He expressed surprise that my TC has lasted four years!!! He said I should replace it.
I then went to the online Apple Store and read the TC reviews, which contained quite a few reviews that report HD failure (mostly power failure, if I'm not mistaken) after 18 months or so! Some suggested that a good solution would be to get an Airport Extreme plus a USB hard drive of some other brand, not Apple. Many of these report power failure, which is not my problem. I still have power; apparently hard drive failure.
This sounded like a good idea, so today I went to London Drugs in Vancouver (an Apple retailer) and the salesman there (should be fairly unbiased) thought I should get a new TC rather than the two-piece solution just because it was simpler. He also said that in fact there about three HD manufacturers who produce all hard drives and that any one would have about the same frequency of failure, Apple include because they don't manufacture their own.
So I'm ready to replace my old TC with the new one I bought, but I'd like to get any suggestions the community might have. I can see the advantage of the TC because it's an all-in-one. I haven't opened it yet, so I'll await your well-informed input.
    Thanks so much!

I think the TC is a much better buy.. If only for this reason.. the USB hard disk on the AEBS is dog slow.. whereas the TC internal drive is at least same as standard single disk NAS.. overall for what you get the price of a 2TB TC vs the 2TB USB disk plus AEBS is about right.. the 3TB TC is much poorer value.
    Read the review.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4577/airport-extreme-5th-gen-and-time-capsule-4th- gen-review-faster-wifi-/4
It is fairly well done, but not everything is correct.. the stuff about the fan turning on is wrong.. it has the same issue as the old one. That is overheating, no ventilation and the fan does not turn on, has no outside vent anyway.
But look at the internal vs usb speed of hdd.. that should convince you of the value of the TC.. if you are using anything but wireless.
BTW the issue with the Gen 1 is still more likely to be the power supply.. The original 500GB hard disk was a Seagate Server ES drive.. the only server standard drive in the whole TC series although it was always promoted as having server standard drives..
IMHO a repair of the power supply would get it up and running again. Very extermely unlikely that drive will die in such a manner.. even if it was to go bad they  tend to stay bad.. not come on again when you power cycle.. but power supplies sure do.
I have repaired dozens of them.. haven't ever come across a dead 500GB drive yet.. seen a few 1TB, both WD and noisy hitachi.. but even so not that many..
Lots and zillions of dead power supplies though.

At least you can pull open the TC and remove the hard disk and wipe it.
Interesting the Apple guys are surprised at the 4year life span.. obviously intended for you to buy a new one much sooner than that.

  • What external hard drives work best with time machine

What is the best external drive that is compatible with time machine?

I see a lot of people on the Apple Discussion boards mention Time Capsule. The experience I've heard from folks with the First gen units was terrible. Poorly designed, poorly manufactured (sorry Apple!). They suffered all kinds of heat stress failures etc. The follow up devices are supposed to better, but I don't think it's mandatory you buy Apple product to run Time Machine. In fact choose based on price/capacity, then possibly on Manufacturers reputation. I use a external USB dock that has a Serial ATA connector on it. That way I can swap drives out when/if they fail or get full. That way I KNOW who manufactured the actual drive itself. Often times if you get a Time Capsule the drive manufacturer is the "flavor of the month" so to speak. There's a number of outfits that make these bare SATA style docks, and you can connect them through USB (which I have) or higher speed connectors like FireWire 800 (for faster reads/writes/backups). My best recommendation is to buy one of those SATA dock devices, then buy a bare hard drive from a reputable manufacturer. Then setup Time Machine and use the left over space that it doesn't use for your growing iPhoto collection? Use your best judgement, as there's no real right/wrong way.

  • Tried to reinstall iPhoto library from external hard drive, it shows that the photos and events are there but there are no thumbnails and if you click on an image or video nothing comes up.

My hard drive crashed recently and we took it to apple to get repaired. The apple employees said that they would have to replace the hard drive but they didn't have the equipment to get the data off my hard drive. So I took it to a computer store who had the right equipment after a month and a half of waiting they finally got all the data off my hard drive and put it on an external hard drive (Seagate Expansion Portable Drive). I then took it back to apple who replaced the hard drive. Now I'm in the process of reinstalling everything. I have never done a Time Machine back up or backed my laptop up to . Which I now will do very often once I've reinstalled everything. I have reinstalled all of my desktop images and folders as well as my iTunes library with no issues. However when i went to reinstall my iPhoto library it came up blank. I then Rebuilt the library several times and this was the result.
It shows that the photos and events are there but there are no thumbnails and if you click on an image or video nothing comes up.
Please help i have three years worth of images from holidays on here and would be devastated if i lost them.

iPhoto cannot find the thumbnails or the original pictures.
Go to your iPhoto Library in the Pictures Folder.
Right-click on it and from the resulting menu, choose 'Show Package Contents'.
This will bring you inside the iPhoto Library package. There you should see a Folder called Masters. Within that, there should be folder containing your actual photos.
    Are they there?

  • Looking for a replacement hard drive cover??

Hello everyone, this is my introduction as well.  I just acquired an x301 from a good friend who cracked the hard drive cover/door/whatever you call it.  I've been searching online in vain and was wondering if anyone here knew where I could get a replacement part?  Hopefully I find one because I don't really want to rig something up just to keep it closed and black duct tape would be soooo tacky haha.  Many thanks in advance!

  • Data Recovery from Late 2008 Macbook Hard drive?

I have a late 2008 Macbook. It was recently dropped by a child, resulting in it no longer turning on. (It worked one time when tried within about 12 hours after the fact and then wouldn't get past the Apple logo and spinning wheel on startup). I brought it to the Apple store and was told they were 99% sure it was just a failure in the hard drive cable. Unfortunately, I received a call sometime later saying it was not the cable, but the hard drive itself.
I am planning on having Apple replace the hard drive, but I am hesitant to pay them the requested $99 to retrieve data from the hard drive (which they say they believe they could do). I do not have an up-to-date version of Time Machine because I had been traveling for nearly a year with my Mac and had left my hard drive at home and, of course, this incident happened right after my arrival.
I was hoping I could do something like Firewire Target Disk Mode using my iMac ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661 ), but cannot do so because my Macbook does not have a Firewire port.
Does anyone have any solutions? If my only option is to pay Apple then I am resigned to that, but as I already have 95% of my data backed up & I only want a few files from a project I had invested quite some time into, I am hoping there is a way to recover the data myself.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I may have missed it ... late 2008 there were still the plastic-bodied macbooks and the aluminum-bodied macbook. I'm told the plastic macbooks have a max disk drive capacity of 500GB, and the aluminum-bodied macbooks are good upwards of 1TB. An important point to check is the drive height. Normal is 9.5mm (I believe all WD Scorpio Black drives are 9.5mm). Some are 12.5MM and some are less than 9.5mm. See what you have today, and likely it's 9.5mm, so replace with same. If  you're in the US, you might confirm max capacity with OWC who also sell hard drives.
One other option .... a little more expensive, however, you could install a solid-state drive in your macbook. If you're able to use a smaller size, a 240GB drive is around $240 at OWC.  Significant speed pickup for disk operations. If you consider this, remember for capacity you need to allow 10% or more for systems usage.
Going from Leopard to Mountain Lion, you may want to upgrade to current iLife programs. The only one no longer offered is iDVD, however. If you want a Snow Leopard level of iLife, Amazon or hardcoremac.com should still have the iLife package available.

  • Hard Drive Data Sound

Hi I have an iBook indigo 366 MHz and a 10GB Hard Drive.
Well when using it i can hear the hard drive writing or reading or just spinning. Its not loud but when in a quite enough environment you can hear it. You can hear it with some noise too.
I have looked for Documentation to see if the computer had a fan because i have watched Apple Keynote's from the past and found out that the iMac G3 was Air Cooled as well as the G4 Cube.
I ask because i have a 500GB HDD and it seems to make less noise I think it is 7200 RPM. And i have a MacBook which does not make really any noise except the Fan. But Hard Drives years ago might have been noisier that the ones today Don't know.

Old hard drives are horrid. They're especcially bad noise-wise because they don't just spool and whirr, they click constantly, and I think that's what you were talking about. that constant "Whirrrr... Click click click scrape--- click".
I've heard of people swapping new drives that make operation much quieter, and even a few people who removed their hard drives and rebuilt the area for SSD using a couple specific adapters and a couple Compact Flash cards.

  • New hard drive in 27" iMac doesn't recognise login password?

Just had new 2 terabyte  hard drive installed in 27" iMac operating with Lion. Most files migrated from old damaged hard drive but not applications. on start up my existing log in password is not accepted. Any ideas how I can log in? Tried logging into utilities on start up and repair permissions but did not help.

Who installed the hard drive and if Lion was installed on the new drive, how/where did that download come from and whose Apple ID was used to download it?

  • MacBook Hard Drive Failure - Any answers?

I am looking for a technical response as to why the hard drives on the MacBooks seem to be failing. Could someone please provide a detailed explanation of the reasons that hard drives typically fail, and more specifically to notebooks and Apple notebooks? I am curious as to why my hard drive may have failed two days ago.
I have carefully reviewed the Terms of Use and this post complies with all Terms of Use.

Typically a hard drive almost always is the weak link in any computer. It's the most "mechanical" of pieces. Just think there's platters spinning anywhere from 4800 to 7200 rpm's which is anywhere from twice to almost three time as fast as a typical car motor runs down the highway at 60 mph.The arm is seeking data within mili-seconds.
The heads are mere nanometers from the platter surface. They could be placed further away from the platter at the cost of data density.
I've read that the speed of the platters along with the distance from the read/write heads are about the equivalent of a 600 MPH jet aircraft travelling mere micrometers from a canyon wall.
All of this leads to something that's just more prone to failure than say a RAM chip which more often either works or doesn't right from the point of manufacture.
Hard drives are always near failure. That's the nature of the market demands for high capacity and performance at low cost.
As far as warranties go, the manufacturer sells OEM drives at a discount with the knowledge that the OEM takes care of replacement within the machine's warranty period (typically a year or two). Aftermarket drives are sold with full warranties backed by the drive manufacturer (3-5 years seems to be the norm).

  • Trouble with External Hard Drive

I recorded some saved programs on my Dish Network DVR 622 to an external hard drive that formatted it for that purpose according to their instructions. Can the external hard drive now be reused by being hooked up to my HP notebook computer and reformatted or have I lost it because of that use? If so, how do I do it? I do not want to save anything on the drive--just format it and use it for a different purpose. I no longer have the Dish DVR. When I connect the external drive to my desktop I do not even see an icon for it in My Computer.
    Thanks for any help.

OK with a little googling around I discovered the DISH DVR formats its external drives for Linux using the ext file system. Windows cannot natively read ext formatted drives. If you plugged it into a machine running Linux you could read the drive. There is also a Windows program that will allow you to read ext formatted hard drives right from Windows.
    http://www.ext2fsd.com/?page_id=16
This may also be kind of a fools errand because I am also seeing that the movies on the hard drive may be encrypted and can only be read by a DVR running your account anyway. If you just want to wipe the drive right click on each of the rectangles in Disk 1 and select delete volume or delete partition until the whole box is blank then create simple volume and format it ntfs and you have a useable external drive.
You could also just delete one of the partitions like say the last one on the right which is 396.26 gb and then create a new partition in it and format it ntfs and give it a drive letter and then you would have a storage space for your laptop files. You could then keep the movies on the rest of the drive for when you get a new DVR. As I understand it from the DISH forums, when you plug the hard drive into a new DVR it will give the option to set it up to work on that DVR. Also I am not 100% clear that the external drives have encrypted movies. That may only apply to people who pull the hard drive out of the DVR and try to get movies from it.
This is an interesting project. The real easy way to see if the movies can be played from a PC is to make a Linux Live disk like ubuntu, boot the system from it and plug in the hard drive while you are running Linux from the Live disk. You could then see if you can see the movies and if they will play in the Linux media player program and it would not cost anything or change anything on your computer. Post back if you want more info on how to try that.

  • Getting my hard drive shipped back to me?

So, I should probably just call Apple on this, but I'm at work and I figured I'd post the question to the users first and see if anyone else has been successful in this.
So, after downloading the most recent updates from Mac a few nights ago, my computer experienced a kernel panic and then got stuck on the boot up screen at restart. After restarting again, my hard drive wouldn't show up. I called tech support, and they were unable to get it to come up either, but I was told if I took it to a Mac store they might be able to retrieve my information. The Mac Genius at the store was unable to do anything about it either, but he did give me a card for a Data Recovery Service that he said could help. Now I'm in the process of making the difficult decision of whether or not to spend 1/9 of my yearly salary to get four years of my pictures back after I just spent 1/9 of my yearly salary to buy this brand new computer. I understand that it was my fault for not having a back up of this information on another computer...but I'm still pretty upset. Now, even if I do decide to send my old hard drive to a data recovery service, I'd like to have my laptop up and running as quickly as possible, even if it doesn't have any of my data on it. My question is:
Would Apple send me back my old hard drive along with the repaired laptop so that I could then send the drive on the data recovery service or am I going to need to send the whole laptop to the data recovery service first, wait for them to do what they do, and THEN send it on to Apple? Additionally, is there any chance in **** that the Apple technicians would be able to retrieve my information for me and save me 2700 dollars? I honestly don't think there's a physical problem with the drive, and perhaps if the drive was extracted and put into another laptop, it might work fine. It's so frustrating because I know the information is on there...my computer just won't recognize it. I appreciate the help...I'm pretty upset about being in this position with a brand new computer.

How could a failed security update have fried your hard drive? Did you try all suggestions at Macfixit to get it working? Who determined your hard drive is faulty? I think you need to keep investigating a solution before resorting to hard drive replacement.
Tutorial: Startup will not proceed after a system or security update; solving
Many times after a major system update (such as an incremental Mac OS X update, i.e. Mac OS X 10.4.5 or a Security Update) can cause an inability to properly startup -- you may see a blank grey screen, pause indefinitely at the Apple logo, see a blue screen, or experience other symptoms.
There are a variety of potential solutions for this issue.
Delete Caches/.plist files If you experience startup problems, first try starting in Safe mode (hold the "Shift" key while you startup), then delete some cache and .plist files to make sure their corruption isn't at fault.
This can most easily be accomplished with a shareware utility like Tiger Cache Cleaner or Panther Cache Cleaner, but also bears a manual process which involves dragging the following files to the trash:
    com.apple.kernelcaches (a folder in /System/Library/Caches)
    Extensions.kextcache (a file in /System/Library)
    Extensions.mkext (a file in /System/Library/)
    com.apple.ATS (a folder in /Library/Caches/)
    com.apple.loginwindow.plist (a file in /Library/Preferences/)
Files that start with com.apple.LaunchServices (in /Library/Caches)
You will be prompted to enter your administrator password when dragging these files to the trash. You may need to restart after moving them to the trash.
Check for problematic login/startup items Startup in safe mode (hold the "Shift" key while you startup))
Next, go to the Accounts pane of System Preferences and click the "Startup Items" tab. Select all the login items and click Remove, then restart.
Also, check the /Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems folders and remove any third-party items.
Repair drive damage In the case of drive directory damage or problems with permissions, the solution is usually to use Apple's Disk Utility to repair the disk. Of course, you won't be able to perform this operation normally (simply launching the Disk Utility application, located in Applications/Utilities, and initiating a disk repair) if your system will not startup. So two options exist:
Insert your Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) media (DVD or CD) and restart the computer while holding down the "C" key. Once the computer has booted from the installation disc, select "Utilities" from the menubar and open Disk Utility. Repair the disk, then quit Disk Utility and restart your system.
Alternatively, you can repair the disk while booted in single user mode if you do not have access to a retail Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) DVD/CD. To startup in single user mode, hold down the "Command" and "S" keys simultaneously at startup. Once properly booted, type the command fsck at the prompt. Repeat these process until no errors appear.
Disconnect network cables The cause for delay in some instances of this issue may be network related -- as Mac OS X tries unsuccessfully to ping an active connection. Temporarily disconnecting any ethernet cables -- then re-connecting them once Mac OS X has started up -- may resolve the delays.
Uninstall the update An extreme measure is uninstallation of the most recently applied update.
This can be accomplished via the following process; adapted from our tutorial on reverting to a previous iteration of Mac OS X. Note, however, that reverting your system will remove any refinements brought by the update and leave your system open to potential vulnerabilities.
First, make a backup of your current Mac OS X installation with the Security Update applied, problematic as it may be. If there is an issue along the way, your valuable data will be safely intact in its current form.
Next, you'll need to perform an Archive and Install process to remove all of the Security Update's (and potentially problem-causing) components, and replace them with the components of a fresh copy provided by the Mac OS X disc that shipped with your system, or a retail Mac OS X disc. Unfortunately, this means you will lose some system settings and some or all third-party system add-ons.
To begin the process, insert your Mac OS X CD or DVD, as indicated above. Restart your machine and hold down the "C" key to boot from the newly inserted disc. Follow the on-screen instructions, and after accepting the license agreement, click "Options." Select "Archive and Install," and check the "Preserve User and Network Settings" option if you'd like to do so.
After the installation process is complete, you will be left with an earlier Mac OS X system that (hopefully) does not suffer from the problems generated by the Security Update. Use Software Update or Apple's download page to download the update that brings your system to a state directly prior to the Security Update

  • Hard drive crashed, only 2 years old

Bought son MacBook Pro (Maverick) for 2013 college graduation - well it crashed today.
Says the hard drive is shot.  Tried everything listed, it will not come back.
He was watching a movie on the computer - screen just went blank
and then the file with question mark came up.
Going to take it to Apple tomorrow.  Not very happy.  Invested in Apple because it is supposed to
be better than the others.  Not a happy mother.
Any suggestions?  What kind of money are we looking at here?

If you bought the 3-year AppleCare extension program -- No charge.
If not, in the neighborhood of US$125 flat rate (no surprises).
Apple does not manufacture its own drives, it uses the same drives as every other manufacturer. Hard Drives are enormously complicated electo-mechanical devices. And "Any Drive can fail at any time" -- that's why we all need an external drive to use for Backups.
