Who really uses Dreamweaver?

I have been a long time user of Dreamweaver and I am really pleased with CS4 and the new abilities to keep track of linked files etc.
However, I have noticed that almost none of the other sites I visit seem to be built using Dreamweaver. I frequently scour other sites for design and technical ideas but very very rarely see evidence of Dreamweaver having been used - eg. I don't think I have ever seen a commercial site that uses Dreamweaver templates. I understand that a lot of sites these days are based on content management systems, but among the static sites that are out there I almost never find sites that appear to have been designed using dreamweaver.
So my question is, does anyone really use Dreamweaver for commercial , production sites and what features (eg. Templates, Spry, ICE) do they use?

richardhellyer wrote:

I do, but I almost never use any of its extended features. I edit my stylesheets in TopStyle when I'm on my PC, because it's easier to navigate and more intuitive than DW's CSS stuff and I clean up messy code in Smultron (Mac) or Textpad (PC), if and when DW's search features are too slow or it refuses to acknowledge some stuff and conks out. The Spry stuff is okay, but I have not yet found an excuse to use it and a lot of other JavaScript code can be found on the web, so one is not too dependent on Spry and the Behaviors panel. The rest of the time DW is just fine and compared to other HTML editors it's surely the most complete package. The only real problem I have, is its rigid approach to dealing with dynamic content. This includes the aforementioned Behaviors panel and naturally, the program being unable to deal even with common CMS systems beyond the likewise rigid Databases panel, is not really helping when working on nested PHP documents and such. You know, empty data regions that are completely meaningless when empty and similar things... It really needs to have a way to connect woith PHP/ CFM/ JSP(A)/ ASP that extends LiveView.

  • Who uses Dreamweaver?

I am new to web programming. I have a little knowledge of
xhtml and css. As I am learning I am also trying to understand who
uses Dreamweaver and/or when should it be used. On a lot of the
xhtml related sites I've seen they always say to just use a simple
text editor. If they are correct and my goal should be to hand code
with a text editor why exactly does Dreamweaver exsist? Any help
and guidance on this subject whould really be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Who uses Dreamweaver CS3 on Mac OS X?

    Howdy,
I'm curious to know how many of you here use Dreamweaver CS3
on the Mac? Not bothered bout you Windows users, I've used it on
there and it's fine (although bulky and slow).
I made the switch to mac a long while back, and coming from
Windows and HomeSite (oh how much I love homesite!!!) the natural
move was to go to Dreamweaver. So I bought a retail copy (along
with PhotoShop CS3) for quite a bit of cash, and I don't use CS3 as
its pretty damn awful on OSX!
By the way, I NEVER touch the WYSIWYG part of Dreamweaver
(wish I could delete all WYSIWYG stuff from it, as that what slows
    it down I'm sure)
To name a few bugs (I'd like to know if you experience these
    too):
    1. It's very slow and bulky, I mean just moving the cursor to
a new line in code view is slow, just doesn't feel good. It
actually feels like its about to crash on me any minute! And I'm on
a 6GB 8 cOre 2.8GHz Mac Pro... so its not my Mac :)
    2. I set my toolbars up to my own preference (i.e. I like to
have the "Standard" menu showing and the "Document" one not) then
suddenly out of the blue "Standard" has gone and the "Document" one
is there. Sometimes I boot up and all is good, open a document and
it disappears (along with the line numbers on the left), right
clicking says its still there but it isn't.
    3. Certain folders on the left file view REFUSE to close! I
collapse them, open another folder up (uncollapse) and what do you
know, the other folder pops open again. Close and open dreamweaver
its open again... I've never manged to close this particular
folder, dreamweaver really likes it for some reason?
There are plenty more, but they are the main ones!
The unfortunate thing is I cannot find a good alternative on
OS X for syntax highlighting, the fact that HTML elements are
coloured differently is invaluable to me, and thats one of the main
things I love bout Dreamweaver (not to mention the global replace
feature that other IDE's don't include)?
Bring HomeSite to OS X is what I say :)
What is your experience of DW CS3 on OS X? Does it all work
correclty for you? Or are you annoyed by it too?

I plotted my escape from Microsoft for years before I finally
    knew
enough about software and the technologies I was using and
    had
sufficient money to make the leap. (I went for a top of the
    line MacBook
    Pro.)
On the negative side, I've learned that the Mac isn't a free
    ride.
Upgrading to Leopard was a wrestling match, as was upgrading
    to Adobe
Creative Suite (largely because certain sales people sold me
    the wrong
upgrade package - twice). I'm also bothered by a number of
    annoyances
that sometimes remind me of my Windows PC.
However, I'm working with a far greater variety of software
    programs
than I ever had on my PC, and the annoyances seldom turn into
    the minor
catastrophes that made life with M$ living Hell.
So far, Dreamweaver is working fine for me. The biggest
    annoyance is the
fact that it likes to jump back and forth between "Spaces,"
    though
Spaces remains my favorite Leopard feature.
I'm sorry you're having problems with yours - and I was
    shocked to hear
that that Rosetta crap also applies to Dreamweaver. I'd never
    heard of
Rosetta until I had some problems with my browsers. Enabling
    Rosetta
fixed the problem, but, sheez - all that Rosetta business
    sounds like
something that came straight from Bill Gates' living room. So
    I'm not
sure if the problem ultimately rests with Adobe, Mac OS X or
    both.
Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the situation to
    advise you.
However, if you live near a sizeable Apple store, schedule an
appointment with their "Mac Geniuses." I've gone in to see
    them at 7
a.m. a couple times - free of charge - and they were a big
    help.
If you're using Leopard, I assume you've already installed
    the two
updates - 10.5.1 and 10.5.2. Ironically, the second update
    appeared to
create one of the very problems it's supposed to eliminate.
    (Whether or
not it's actually a problem is a matter of debate in the Mac
    community;
it hasn't actually caused any problems for me.)
You might also try posting some questions on Apple's forums -
    http://discussions.apple.com.
If nothing works, and you do go back to M$, I certainly
    wouldn't hold it
against you. If Apple and/or Adobe don't have their act
    together, then
you can't blame people for returning to a platform that
    works. However,
I have much greater confidence in both Apple and Adobe to fix
    their
problems in the long run than I do in Microsoft. Even if you
    get
Dreamweaver to work on your PC, will your other software
    programs work?
In summary, I've learned that there's no free ride in
    computing. But I
still prefer my Mac to M$, and I don't believe I've heard as
    many
complaints about Dreamweaver on a Mac as I have about Vista.
    But do
    whatever's best for you.

  • Adding dynamic images to your website using Dreamweaver

    Hi
I've been working on a website which has been in use by public for some months now.
I recently wanted to add a simple product catelogue.   I can do this just by creating my database connection and using the recordsets.
However I wanted to add an image thumbnail to each product record.
I found the above topic in the Adobe Help 'Adding dynamic images to your website using Dreamweaver'
What I really would like to know is what exactly is put in the image_location field of the table, how is this field populated and then how to view the picture.
I have tried, as per instructions, but the picture is not showing.
I use php as I dont know coldfusion, but I'm sure the process must be pretty similar.
If anyone can shed some light then that would be really appreciated.
    Many thanks liz

As most anyone else will say, so I will say; *please don't
    start it
    automatically!*
Playing music on a site is fine, but making it play
    automatically when you
go to the site will alienate lots of people; especially those
    having a quick
web surf at work or who have other music on whilst they're
    working.
But back to your question; have a look at the XSPF music
    player
    http://musicplayer.sourceforge.net/).
It comes in different visual versions
(can modify it with a bit of Flash knowledge), allows you to
    select
different songs or just leave it looping, or you can just
    loop one song. And
yes, you can make it start automatically.
    See

I have recently had to fire my web designer who was using iWeb.  Now I'm trying to figure out how to get the site to open in iWeb on my new MacBook Pro.  Is there a way?

Firstly iWeb CAN'T IMPORT any kind of published html code as it has no import facility.  You can however add html code, javascript and css by selecting the html snippet and placing it on your page the entering the code in here and clicking on Apply.  You DO NOT create a shape as you say - you use the html snippet and place your code in there.
There are not really a lot of ways in which you can write code - if you want to enter small amounts of code, then you would use an ordinary text editor to do this such as Text Edit on a Mac or Text Wrangler.  If you want to add code to iWeb like this, then you would either use the html snippet method in iWeb itself or you would have to publish the site to a local folder from iWeb and open the relevant html page with a text editor and add the additional code in this way and then publish.  However, if he decided to add the code with a text editor, then you would have to upload the pages directly to the server using an ftp client - if you try to upload the site directly from iWeb, all the extra code will be overwritten.
As for checking whether the site was created using iWeb, all you need do is view the site in Safari and then click on View and then select View Source Code and it will tell you.
Even thoough extra code was added to the site and he might well have done this by publishing to a local folder and adding the code with a text editor, he should still have the domain file for the site too.
Ask again.  I'm sure that for adding quick code, most would not want to use programmes such as Dreamweaver, but a simple text editor will suffice.  As OT already said, if he claims that he does not have the domain.sites file, then try Flux 4 which is a web design programme and has full import facilities.  At least this way, if he just gives you the published version of the site, you have some way of opening it.
You can download a free trial of Flux 4 and you can also purchase the full version from the Mac App Store if you decide you like it.

I created a website using Dreamweaver and used its FTP capability to upload the files.  I used the settings (HOST NAME: ftpmysite.verizon.net, User Name: your user ID (e.g. - jsmith), PASSWORD: your password) that were published here.. http://www.verizon.net/central/vzc.portal?_nfpb=true&action=FAQ&_pageLabel=pws_content#wlp_pws_conte...

When web designing, it doesn't matter if it's either .htm or .html. Just as long as every other page that you DO link the index file to that it's consistent.
For example, I cannot have on another page:
    <a href="index.htm">Text here</a>
When the original index file is a .html
So long as you're consistent when linking each file to the original index it should be fine. The Suffix that it has really hasn't mattered for years.
If you use 'pls' because it's shorter than 'please' I'm going to say 'no' because it's shorter than 'yes.'

  • Editing pages created using dreamweaver with microsoft's visual studio express

Here's a quick, somewhat vague, question for anyone who might have an answer. Is there a trick to editing pages created using dreamweaver with Microsoft Visual Studio Express? The reason I ask is I recently finished a web site for my first client who now wants to make edits herself using the program she uses, that being Microsoft. I thought it would be as easy as pulling the html files from the server (or the usb flash drive i gave her), making changes and then putting them back to the server, but apparently she is having some problems. I'm meeting with her soon. I have no experience with any other programs, other than Adobe, so I don't know how much good I'll be in helping her. Maybe it's an easy question, maybe not. Any info appreciated. Thanks!

Hi David, I meant the templates with the dwt extension, not the html files that are created from them. The full version of VS will recognize the dwt extension as 'Dynamic Web Template' but as this is a microsoft extension it does not recognize the code for editing and shows a large number of errors, (before anyone comments the dwt file extension is used by a number of other programs, all referring to a different file type).

Have you looked at your page with images disabled?
I urge you to re-think this approach to web design because images of text are not indexed by search engines, screen readers or translators.  Given the demographic group your site is targeting, you really need to ensure maximum web accessibility for all users.
Navigation, headings and descriptions all need to be in real text -- not images of text.
Ken is right.  Absolute positioning is pure poison for such a simple layout.  My advice is to start over with one of the pre-built Starter Pages in DW.  Go to File > New > Blank page > HTML.  Select a layout from the 3rd column and hit CREATE button.

  • Unable to connect to the remote ftp server using dreamweaver.

For the last one week I have been trying to connect to the remote ftp server using dreamweaver. I spoke to the technical support agency who manage our remote server but they are saying that there is no problem with the server adn they dont know anythign about dreamweaver so cant assist me.
I was suggested to check with adobe team directly and i spoke to a technical support person on the live chat but they said since the version is CS4 - education version, they cant assist me at all!! This is just ridiculous...I am constantly being sent from one place to the other without anything getting resolved!!
    Please help somebody!!

I am having a similar problem... maybe.  I was connected to my remote site all day yesterday, then out of the blue I tried to "put" an edited file... as I had been doing all day, and I received an FTP error:  Cannot make connection to host. Your login or password is incorrect.  That's odd, I've been connecting all day.  So I went into my sites > manage sites and clicked the Test button on my remote server information and it returned Adboe Dreamweaver CS connected to your webserver successfully.  I went back to my file and tried once more to "put" it on the remote server... again FTP Error: cannot make connect to host...  So I reboot my computer and start Dreamweaver CS3 again.  I reenter my remoter server information and click the Test button.  "... connect to your webserver successfully".  I try to put any file, FTP error again.  So I call my server administrator, he checks the servers logs and says there are no errors and you've connected successfully several times today.  I went through the trouble shooting steps listed here, though my FTP Logs are empty.  I cannot stay connected or even see the remote folders to try to drag and drop.  I tried to run ftp from a windows command prompt and it seems to connect me.
I downloaded an installed an SFTP client and was able to successfully connect to my remote server and upload the files.  It's definately a Dreamweaver problem.  Any suggestions?

  • Problems using Dreamweaver CS5 on Maverick Operating System

I have updated the operating system from Lyon to Maverick and I am having problems using Dreamweaver CS5, I open the program and it closes automatically. I had no problems using Dreamweaver on Lyon operating system. Is there a patch or a solution to this problem? Thanks!

Are you intending to purchase a standalone version of Dreamweaver CS5?
Your work computer has probably got a CS4 Creative Suite installed (Design Premium CS4?).
You won't be able to upgrade Dreamweaver CS4 (from the Suite) on your work computer to standalone Dreamweaver CS5. It's not a valid upgrade path.
Tip: CS6 is due to be released very soon.
    http://store.adobe.com/store/en_us/popup/offer/cs55_cs6_faqchannel.html
Although free upgrades from CS5 (purchased after 26 March 2012) are available, there is some paperwork involved. In your position, I personally prefer to wait until CS6 ships - unless CS5 is really the version you want, of course.

  • Blog/News posting using Dreamweaver/Contribute

This is a general question and I hope I'm posting in the
    right place.
I have a client who wants a site that can be maintained using
Contribute. I've figured this being the case, I'd be best to set it
up as static HTML files using Dreamweaver, rather than the hand
coded ASP I usually use. I'm familiar with storing page content in
a database as XML and using XSL to generate HTML. Obviously this is
not going to work with Contribute.
I understand the process of creating pages using Dreamweaver
and/or Contribute. What I don't understand is how I can replicate
the dynamic news item menus etc that I can produce so easily with
ASP and a database. Is it possible to allow the user to create new
pages through Contribute and have links to these automatically
updated on the home page, or would they have to also add a link to
the home page? Coming from my background, that seems like a step
backwards to me, so I hope there is a neat way of doing it.
Forgive my ignorance if it's a common practice. This is my
first attempt at a site with CS. I've done some training on CS work
flow but it didn't cover dynamic content, blogs etc. I appreciate
any advice that comes my way or please let me know if I should post
    somewhere else.

    Thanks for the reply.
    >Can you do something in asp
Yeah I can. Currently what I do for existing sites is that
all content is stored in the database. I have some special code
that grabs the current news headlines (based on some rules) and I
automatically build a news menu for the home page. Parsing
directories would be a bit painful I think but sounds like that's
    the only option.
I'm still trying to get it straight in my head how Contribute
will integrate into the whole thing. I think I'm right in saying
that Contribute will only work with flat HTML files, not anything
built on the fly server-side like ASP. So all the maintainable
content needs to be in a flat file and any pages with dynamic
content will not be maintainable by the client.
    >Will a real serverside blog suit the clients needs?
Could be but I guess that depends how easily I can integrate
it into the site with regard to appearance and navigation. They're
not going to want a sub-site with different look and feel. It also
gives them another maintenance interface to deal with for the blog
content and the reason they're insisting on Contribute is that they
already use it for their other site. I suppose RSS would be the way
to keep the news links up to date in that case. A home page with an
RSS feed back to the blog.
Thanks for the input though. I'm trying to get up to speed
quickly with this problem as they want a quote and it's the blind

I've just started using Dreamweaver and thought I could import source code from an HTML newsletter template I had and just update it with the new text and pictures. I started a new HTML page, imported the source code into the workspace, then started updating it. However, all I get is code when I try to preview the file in the design view or a web browser. What am I doing wrong? I've attached a screen cap of what I'm seeing.
Thanks to anyone who can help!

Just a nit - you are not *importing* anything.  You are just copying and pasting.  I'm just sayin'.
When you paste HTML code into Design view, all of the HTML brackets ("<" and ">") are converted to HTML entities ("&lt;" and "&gt;", respectively), which makes the result look like code in Design view, but there is no 'display' to be rendered other than the text.

  • Who really needs both Photoshop CC and Photoshop CC(2014)

Who really needs both Photoshop CC and Photoshop CC(2014). Which is newest ?

CC 2014 is the newer version. Regarding having both versions; when Adobe releases a new version with many additions and upgrades they quite often introduce lovely new bugs. So it's often nice to be able to keep the old version for a while until you can make sure that the new version works as its supposed to. Maybe not so often the case with Photoshop, but VERY useful with some other programs ... like *cough*... Premiere Pro!

  • WebAssist Cart help? I know it's off topic but... Could really use some help...

I've got a shopping cart that is working and I'm trying to update the
quantities in inventory by subtracting the quantity ordered from the total
inventory in a table called ITEMS.
I can update a record after a sale in the cart, but right now it is
updating by completely replacing the value of the items in inventory with
the quantity in the checkout cart. So, if there are 800 items, after the
update, there are -1 total in inventory, not 799.
The problem is that I don't know how to coordinate the item(s) in the stored
shopping cart with a call to their ID and quantity in the online database.
Here's what I have so far:

  • I think my iMac is infected and could really use some help

I recently purchased an iMac for the 1st time and am having many pop ups, survey requests and emails sent from my account to people in my address book.  I used the chat help that came up on the Apple support  which was a 3rd party who did a diagnostic check on my computer.  They told me my computer was infected and wanted to charge me $159 to fix it. I could really use some suggestions.  I have heard that apple computers don't get infected but it appears mine did.

No infections. These are all scams you can ignore. I suggest that you enable your browser's pop-up blocker which will help with some of these annoyances. For more extensive preventions I recommend GlimmerBlocker.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.
