Who's in Charge? What needed fixing and/or new feature added?

Having been a software development engineer and manager for over 20 years and a Mac Evangelist since 1984, I have been very disturbed by the GUI changes that Apple has made to the OS X over the past 5 years.
There appears to have been an invasion of Microsoft SW programmers into the Mac OS X systems SW department.
Any change to an established GUI should be a very critical concern of any Software Manager and only done to fix a major error or to add new features, which should not impact GUIs for current features.
The most costly investment a user makes in any software is in the user training to become productive in its use.  This is where the GUI makes or breaks the user experience and his decision to continue its use or toss it and replace it with another app with a more familiar and user friendly GUI.
When Apple makes changes to the GUI with no apparent benefit except that some rogue programmers decided they didn't like the old way and wanted to "make it their own", it costs the user community literally hundreds of thousands of hours in lost time adjusting the the new GUI without any added benefit and it creates frustration and disappointment with the app. It also creates a sense of betrayal and fear that other unneeded changes to the GUI will follow with more lost time.
There should be a strictly controlled change control process when any contemplated GUI change is being considered.  A change request must be created and thoroughly reviewed especially with the impact on users being the foremost consideration.  When new features are added, the GUI should be consistent with the current feature GUI as much as possible.  Obviously, when a released feature's GUI proves to be cumbersome and unproductive, it should be revised. But revised only to minimum extent required. When a new GUI for current features can be justified based on consistency, improved productively and/or accuracy, then an option should be provided to current users to revert to the old GUI if they choose to for at least 1 or 2 releases/updates.
GUI changes should be beta tested by a broad base of REAL users before being released.  REAL users should be heavily weighted to LONG time users and not just based on younger, inexperienced users with very little investment in time relative to the current GUI.
In GUI software, change for change's sake should be quickly stopped and denied approval for implementation.  Yosemite is a classic example of how not to upgrade software.  It obviously was not very well tested before release. The SW QA dept should be replaced.  The SW Engineering Manager should be fired for approving a Software Specification and GUI Specification that was Yosemite.  Did anyone on the SW Engineering Development team have ANY experience using Mac OS X?  Mavericks was a significant change from Mountain Lion but it was still recognizable as a Mac OS.  Yosemite looks like a rejected Windoze OS release.
Being an Apple shareholder and a Mac Evangelist since 1984 (even had a Lisa in 1982!) I am deeply concerned that Apple is loosing it's way.
A user friendly, well tested GUI used to be Apple's strong point and is what created a loyal user base. Let's hope Apple does not lose sight of their best product discriminator.

  • Factory faulty HDD needs replacement and hence new OS.

My HP Probook 4545s was shipped with an HDD fault, the system would not book and hence go into the black and white diagnostics screen, the after it failed HDD tests it would say no operating system found etc. I went to my local HP reps and they said the HDD needed replacing and I would have to install a new OS. With the HDD replaced, I would have to install a new OS, however, I was given an OS CD (one for w7 and one for w8, the pc was displayed as w8, but came as w7) on purchase, but it did not come with a CD Key. I do not want to have the activate windows prompt coming onto my screen ever so often, so I was wondering if I could somehow source a CD Key for my OS CD. The normal answer would be to buy a new genuine copy, however, this was not my fault as it was, as stated, a faulty HDD.
    This question was solved.

  • IBP 4.0 FP1 Patch 2 - Need more info on new features in Supply Planning

    Hi All,
I was reading the SAP help and some of the new features are not very clear to me, if you have clarity around it please read and help me to get more clarity.
As per SAP Help,The following features are now available in IBP for supply:
Separate lead time units of measure can be defined for use in multiple planning areas depending on different time granularities.
My Query - Where do we define it? I do not see any additional attribute in the MDT where lead time is present but don't see any attribute to define lead time units or any other different settings in the planning area so how can we define this?
Static periods of supply are taken into account as input for the inventory target, with projected periods of coverage provided as output.
My Query - What exactly has changed and which are the new key figures here to support this? I could not understand this from reading the above text.
Independent demand is taken into account as input at the product location, in addition to the distribution demand from other nodes and customer demand.
The optimizer algorithm supports the Non-Delivery Cost Rate key figure as input for the independent demand at the product location.
My Query - A new key figure "INDEPENDENTDEMAND" is available now @PERPRODLOC so first point is very clear but second point is very confusing to me as "Non delivery cost rate" is only defined @PERPRODCUST so how we will define the non delivery cost rate for independent demand which is at different planning level and if we are not able to define it how optimizer algorithm will support it? Ideally it needs to be at same level like consensus demand and Non delivery cost rate both @PERPRODCUST Level.
    Thanks
    Girish

    Hi Mark,
While I'm not in your list of people to respond I figure I give it a go anyways :-)
The list of features you mentioned is a nice summary. One of the main release themes is data quality as you noticed. Apart from changes to the name&address functionality we also added the advanced matching and merging into this release. So you can use custom rules to match and merge data. This also allows you to do things like householding for customer data records. In essence we have now completed the integration of Pure*Integrate into Warehouse Builder.
The mapping debugger is another big thing. This allow you to walk through your mappings and see in detail what happes to the data.
The metadata change management is now in the UI. THis means there is now object level version management in Warehouse Builder via the UI. You can also compare versions and get a difference report.
As you mentioned there are a number of smaller and bigger features next to this. The idea for this release is to make OWB a top Data Quality product and allow you to do your ETL and DQ in one tool. Apart from that we have added usability features (debugger, N&A wizard) and we have added some features to solve specific problems.
Especially the corelated commit is interesting in that respect. You can now, in a map with multiple targets control the commit, and choose to either commit all targets or none, or commit them individually (current behavior).
As usual there is a lot more, as this is indeed a major release. Keep an eye on OTN for more collateral regarding the new features. We are currently updating the site to reflect the new stuff.
On the OLAP patch, both 9.0.4 and 9.2 will work equally well with the OLAP patch (when it is available). In 9.2 we added some small thing around composites. More about that when there is an OLAP patch to test this one on in a customer site.
I hope this answered the question, if not let me know.

  • HT6104 How do I upgrade to Safari 7 if I currently have OS X 10.6.8 running on my desktop?  I need it to access new features on another website.

I need Safari 7 to be able to use some of the newer features at Fidelity Investments' website.  When I tried upgrading, I received a message stating that I could not update my OS X system (as currently configured).  Fidelity says this is supposed to be a free upgrade to Safari 7.  Any help appreciated.

Before you finish considering upgrading your OS, do a check on your existing programs because many of them (in particular those that are PPC) will not work on the newer, higher OSs.

  • What are your favorite apps/new features you like after the 2.0 upgrade?

I discovered one feature by mistake, after finally getting my iPhone going again! I pressed the top button and home button at the same time once and saw a white flash on the screen! It turns out it works like a print screen button!! Very cool! Whatever you see on your iPhone, you can save directly to your photos, just press those two buttons simultaneously once until it flashes! If you guys already knew about this, I apologize. Please post any other favorite new features or apps here!! Thanks.

Well the update worked fine for me and one thing I love is that I can access the app store using the Edge network & not just via wi-fi. but if i can access the app store over the edge network then why not allow users to access the itunes store over the edge network as well? either way i'm happy. also, i liked the fact that when i tested the "locate me" feature in maps that the iphone prompted me for permission. that's a great security feature so that other ppl can't try to access your phone remotely or something and try to determine your location w/o your permission.

  • I have just upgraded to the cloud, and no new features...

I had CS6 suite installed on my computer.  I upgraded to the cloud, and updated all the apps that I have installed, and I have no new features like the PhotoShop create CSS like I see on Adobe TV.  This actually inspired me to upgrade, so now I'm thoroughly disappointed.  Did I have to uninstall all the CS6 apps before I downloaded the cloud versions?
    Thanks

I should add, I'm on Mac Lion version 10.7.5, but it doesn't seem to come up on my Macbook that I have Mountian Lion on either.

    Hi Ken,
Thank you for trying so hard... really appreciate it.
I have solved the problem for my Macbook.  I deactivated Photoshop (again), uninstalled it (again), but this time, I ran a safe boot, turned my computer off, turned back on, reinstalled Photoshop (had to do it from the perpetual licence as the cloud was still telling me it was installed - weird), deactivated the new installation, turned PS off, turned it back on, at which point it asked me to agree to terms, and then let me log into it by the cloud id, then did the update from PS itself, and finally I have the new features.
Still don't have it working on my iMac under Lion.  An Adobe engineer has contacted me and we are working on it.

PS... thought I'd post everything step by step if anyone else has this issue!

  • 2.1 Update what is fixes and what it F's up

Wow, I was initially amazed at the performance bump of the 2.1 update this am. After updating to Itunes 8 it sent my phone and 6 coworkers phones into bricks or partial bricks, here is the thread:
"I own one Iphone, my fiance one, and my five cowokers have them totalling 7 in all.
Since upgrading to Itunes 8 4 out of our 7 Iphones have been rendered unusable since the update. We've all done Iphone restores(only after doing a forced restore by holding down the home and power button while docking it so Itunes will force it to restore) and all four of us have had to do this many many times and we get mixed results from working for an hour or 2 or not working at all.
One of my coworkes took it to the genius bar, they fixed it, and half way home on the drive his phone was back to a brick."
The good news is that my phone, my fiance's phone, and 1 of my coworkers(thats all I've heard from so far) have had the Itunes 8 Brick problem fixed. My phone works great, I've even got some apps back on and contacts without it locking up once.
But all isn't bliss in Iphone Land. Now both my phone and my fiance's phone are doing this very odd behavior. When you go to either the contact list or SMS text list and press on a contact, it chooses and even dials the contact several contacts below. I've done a restart to the phone, and just did a restore and put no apps, contacts, music etc and it still does it about 80% of the time.
The one coworker who I could get ahold of said he is experiencing similiar issues.
So now I'm trying to call a friend and have to press the contact 2 or 3 contacts below in a guessing game to try to call them.
    Fun stuff....
I finally pulled my sim card out and put it in a cheap at&t to go phone just to make calls.
I liked the old days when apple would test test test test and then only release an update when it was relatively bug free.
    The salad days indeed....

    Test?
Hey that's what they have us for. I keep waiting for my paycheck from Apple payroll to arrive but no such luck yet. I just need to be more optimistic.
    Think positive.

  • Ok, What is fixed and what is not?

Sending my Macbook in today to get repaired. I complained about the following:
Discolouration: Palm rests and around the screen.
    Mooing: grr.
Whine: Stops when I press down the mouse.
Which of these things will they be able to fix...there have been mixed messages.
He also gave me a repair time of 7-10 business days. That about right for what I have?

I can only comment on the discolouration as I don't have the other problems. I had my palmrest replaced by Apple 2 weeks ago and no problems so far. I'm hoping it will stay that way.
Apple had my MacBook for a week for this repair.

My phone got wet in my pocket during a rainstorm last week. After drying it out it appeared fine except that the battery won't charge. It does however appear that its charging, It makes the noise when connected to the charger and the battery icon has the charging symbol next to it. I've changed the battery and the problem persists. Do you think the charging circuits have been damaged? What should my next step be?

Unfortunately, your next step is to find a competent 3rd party repair shop or buy a new phone. Apple will not touch that one now that you opened it.
Apple does not sell iPhone parts including batteries. The only possible sources are stolen parts, salvaged parts, or counterfeit parts.
You are no longer eligible for the $199 out of warranty replacement.
Missed the part where he changed the battery.

  • Ok... so iOS5 has brought some cool (and useful) new features.... good job.  However, moving forward I would like to see even more "holding faith" with the overall philosophy of lots of devices interacting with a single data set.

My first, and perhaps clearest, example here is iMessage.  It's great that I can take and reply to messages on my iPhone and on my iPad as if it didn't matter which device I use.  However, I spend most of my working day on my Mac, and it's a little annoying to have to use one of my other devices to send and receive messages when my most powerful device (my Mac) is right there under my finger tips.  I'm an iChat user, which has some great functionality, but of course it doesn't integrate with iMessage in anyway or Facetime for that matter, even though you can effectively do a "Facetime" call on iChat if the other person has the appropriate user account.
So my question/suggestion is - I wonder if there's a way of bringing iChat, iMessage, Facetime etc... all into harmony so that messages, video chatting, screen sharing etc... is dealt with under a single application.  I accept you may have it so that there is more functionality on, say, your Mac (e.g. screen sharing).  But the integration would still be helpful I think.
Any thoughts (with the hope that Apple will also see these comments/answers/suggestions and take it as food for thought on product development)?
Incidentally, and also for Apple's benefit, please don't read this message as as meaning that I don't like what's already been done!  It's great and I think it really is moving in the right direction.  It's just that there's still room for improvement.
    Rob

Thanks for responding Wes.  I've pasted the confusing text from that website referenced in my original post below:

You can ingest entire movie clips or a selected portion of the movie clips (partial ingest). You can also transcode the selected movie clips using more than one encoding option.
Select File > Ingest. Alternatively, press Ctrl+I (Win) or Cmd+I (Mac OS).
Navigate to the folder containing media, and click the folder. The contents of the folder are displayed in the center panel.
Tip: To access folders from which you previously ingested content, use the menu above the panel.
Do the following based on your requirements:
To view content as Thumbnails, click the Icon View button.
To view content as a list, click the List View button.
To quickly preview the contents of a movie clip, drag the cursor across the thumbnail. You can also click the thumbnail and use the playhead to scrub the movie. Alternatively, use the JKL keys to control playback of the selected thumbnail.
To change the thumbnail size of movie clips in the panel, use the Zoom slide bar.
