Who's in my airport?

I think my neighbor just got a computer with wireless access, and they have been using my wireless. How can I tell if they are doing so?
Sometimes when i open itunes it says something like "caitlyn's itunes" and i have no idea who that is.. but anyways.. is there a way i can block them out?
what is a VPN should i use that?? or under system preferences, then Network, then Internet, then Airport Options i set up a WEP password? is that right?

Applications > Utilties > Airport Admin Utility
Select your base station
Configure
Airport Tab
Change Wireless Security
Use WPA
Use a non-word password like this
fgj784jfj63jfbnvs90nd
Click OK
Click Update
You will now lose connection to your wireless network, re-connect and enter the WPA password.
Done, your neighbour will no longer have wireless access.

  • Who is using my airport

is there really no way to find out who is currently using my airport extreme.  I know I can get MAC addresses by using the airport utility.  But I want to know who is using my airport right now, not who has been using it is the past week.

The wireless clients listed by the airport utility may be connected currently or it may have been connected 6 hours ago.
Not in the Wireless Clients window of the AirPort Utility application that I am using.
Sounds like you may be looking at the  DHCP Clients window.
Wireless Clients will display a wireless device that is currently connected, and if the device logs off the wireless, that device will disappear from the Wireless Clients window within a few seconds.
When the device logs back on to the wireless, it appears again within a few seconds in Wireless Clients.
So, I will stand by my statement that Wireless Clients displays clients that are currently connected to the wireless network.
DHCP Clients (which from your description is what you are looking at) will display a client and the time that a new lease was granted or renewed, which could be minutes or hours depending on when that occurred. The device listing under DHCP Clients does not indicate whether the device is currently active on the wireless network or not....only that it has been granted a DHCP lease for the network.
If you are using more than one AirPort and have a device extending the network, the wireless device may be showing up under Wireless Clients on the extending device and not showing up on the "main" router. That is normal.  In this case, the wireless device would be a Wireless Client of the "extending" device, but a DHCP Client of the "main" router.
At least, that is the way AirPort Utility and Wireless Clients and DHCP Clients works here. Check the Wireless Clients tab on your version of AirPort Utility to see if it behaves as my verson does.

  • How do i find out who is using my airport express?

I have an airport express to extend my Wifi coverage and i am sure other people who have asked for the password in the past are still using it. Is there a way to see who is using it, when and block people? I could change the password, but I would like to find out first who is using it.

    1) Open AirPort Utility
    2) Hold down the option key on your Mac
    3) Keep holding the option key while you double click on the AirPort Express icon in the center of the AirPort Utility window
    4) Release the option key after you double click
Something like the example below will appear, with the Summary tab highlighted.....which in this example shows that there are two devices currently connected to the wireless network. If you click on the arrow next to each listing, then more information will be revealed about that particular device.

  • How do i see who is using my airport extreme

Looking for help in determining who is connected to my airport extreme and can I monitor their activity?

First, download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 which will contain the features you need. It is compatible with Lion as well as Mountain Lion, however, the installer app will refuse to install it on Mountain Lion. As I recall it installs on Lion without complaint.
This dilemma is easily solved though. You simply need to extract the app from the installer package using a package extractor like Pacifist.
    Download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/
Download AirPort Utility 5.6 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
After you get AirPort Utility 5.6 installed and running, come back and read the following.
I don't know of a better solution than to use Airport Utility - click Advanced, > Logs and Statistics > Logs. You will see the MAC addresses of the devices connected to your Airport. They're cryptic, but if you familiarize yourself with the MAC addresses of all your devices it's easy to spot an intruder.
MAC addresses are almost always printed somewhere on the exterior case of network devices. Keep a list of them in a convenient place.
"Monitoring activity" is more of a challenge. Depending on exactly what you want to monitor, you would need third party software to do that... I recall hearing about a program called Net Nanny so search for something like that.

  • How do I see who is accessing my Airport Express wi fi?

How do I see who is accessing or currently using my Airport Express wi fi?

    On your Mac....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Express icon
Look for Wireless Clients to see the number of currently connected devices. If you have 2 wireless devices and you see 3 wireless clients, you may have an uninvited guest on your network.

  • How to make sure I'm the only one who can manage my airport base station using airport utility?

I know we have to use the Airport Utility application to manage the Airport base station in order to create a new network, creating the SSID and chosing the encryption mode and setting the password but how I could be sure I'm the only one who have access to those settings? A user of my network can install the Airport Utility application and change those settings. With other routers like D-Link, to have access to the settings you need to know the admin password to modify the settings. I can't figure out how we can do this with Airport Extreme base station. It's maybe obvious but I'm in the cloud for the moment.

You can set a base station administrator password in order to limit who can administer the base station. With AirPort Utility v6.x, you can set this password on the Base Station tab.

  • Who is accessing my airport

I want to be able to see who is accessing my wireless network.  Is there any way to do this given I'm running Airport Express 7.6.3?  I'm running OSX 10.7.5 on my Macbook pro.  THere was a link posted in a forum dated 2006 for this, but the page in question no longer exists.

is there any way to bump clients off the Wifi without having to bring down the entire thing?
Not easily. If you identified a MAC Address that you did not want to be on the network, I suppose that you could set up Timed Access to never allow that particular MAC Address to connect to your network.
But, you would have to restart the AirPort for the changes to take effect.....temporarily knocking everyone else off for 30 seconds or so.
This would only work for wireless clients, not any Ethernet clients.

  • Who's Using My Airport?

    Hello All,
Does anyone know if there is a utility that will show who (or what) is connected to my Airport Extreme Wireless Router?
I looked elsewhere in the Airport Discussions and was only able to find a thread regarding other brands of routers.
I'm curious to know id such a utility exists for the Airport Extreme Router.
    Thanks!

    Hi there!
I'm not sure if another thread here hasn't answered your inquiry to some
extent or another; but one does address a question concerning what
computers are in the wireless network and some older software utilities:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=711260&tstart=0
The above link leads to a download for "airport management tools" v 3.4
    and AirPort Management Utility asks for Airport 3.4 or Later, & won't go;
so when I check, my system is well beyond (and at one time had) the
asked for part. Other tool works fine; tells the user information about
the bandwidth and up/down speeds; that says it's a Client Monitor.
If you can make it all work, post back!

  • Can I discover who is using my airport extreme network?

I am seeing variable performance of my Airport Extreme wi-fi network in terms of download speed.  Some of the variance could, I think, come from the number of other users and the rate at which they are consuming bandwidth.  I don't know of a way to see: 1. Who is using the network and 2. Their activity level.  Is there a way to do so?

You can see the AirPort ID of each device that is connected to the wireless network, but information on how much bandwidth each device is using is not available in any Apple application.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click directly on Wireless Clients (near the bottom of the page)
A window will open to display the AirPort ID of each wireless device that is currently connected to the network

  • View who is connected to Airport

How can I view who's connected to the Airport Express at any given time and/or if anyone tried to connect.
    Thanks.

You can get a list of the connected wireless clients using the AirPort Utility, as follows:
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Advanced > Statistics > Logs and Statistics > Wireless Clients

  • Who is on my Airport Network?

I leave my Airport network open with no passwords, so everyone can easily use it.
How can I see who is logged on, and is it possible to monitor what they are looking up?
All I can find is the Airport Utility Logs page, which just shows a bunch of numbers and the start time...
Is there a program available to show me what's happening on my Airport network?
    Thanks,
    ShawnR

There may be other methods but Airport Utility's log really is a very good way to find out who (or what) is on your network. Look for the log entries saying "associated with station xx:xx:xx..." Those are MAC (media access code) addresses which correspond to the devices on the network, and are unique as fingerprints.
You should keep a post-it note somewhere with the MAC addresses of all your networked computers and other devices. They can usually be found on a printed label somewhere stuck on the outside of its enclosure. If one appears your log that you can't account for, there's someone piggybacking on your network.
There is no quick way I can think of to determine who or what that someone is doing though...

  • Who's kidnapping my airport remote speaker?

Every once in awhile, right in the middle of listening, I get a window that says: "The remote Airport speaker is currently being used by someone else. Please select another speaker from the menu at the bottom of the iTunes window"
What the heck is this?? How can MY speaker be used by somebody else? How can I get rid of the kidnapper?

  • Mac Mini and Airport Utility

    Hello,
I bought a Mac Mini last weekend, and I'm very happy with it so far, but I can't seem to be able to share my Internet connection wirelessly ..that's why I am trying to "find" the AirPort Utility.
The Mac Mini came with Airport Extreme build-in, but I can't see the "AirPort Utility" I read about on Apple's support page. I can only see the AirPort Admin Utility (which comes up empty).
How can I access the AirPort Utility, or is it only available for users who bought the "external" AirPort Extreme.

You should find 2 applications in your Utilities folder, 1 is the Airport Admin Utility and the other is the Airport Setup Utility. Both are used for setting up and administrating an Airport basestation - the external AirPort Extreme that you refer to which, from your comments, I assume you do not have.
I assume that you DO have some form of wireless basestation in your home/office where you are trying to connect. To configure your internal airport card, select the System Preferences from the dock. Then click on the Network Tab in the System Preferences window. You'll then see a window with two pop-up menus, one labeled Location and the other labled Show. In the Show pop-up menu, select Network Status if it isn't already showing. Now in the window below you should see at Airport. Select it and then click on the Configure button at the bottom of the dialog box. Now there will be a tab bar going across the dialog labeled Airport - TCP/IP - PPPoE - AppleTax - Proxies. Configure these as appropriate.

  • Inserting password for airport base graphite network

I have an iBook G3 500 of seven years vintage, and recently bought an airport card and a graphite airport base on eBay. It's working fine as a domestic network, but it has simply the name of the person who sold me the airport base as its name, and no passport is needed to access it. As I live in a city flat with several named networks I can see are overlapping where I live, I would like to have a passport on my own network. Simple maybe stupid question: if I reset the graphite base station as at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2439?viewlocale=en_US will I be able then to insert a password for access to my network?

The network shows up in the Airport menubar pulldown, it shows up fine with full strength in Internet Connect,
Does it show up now with the seller's previous network name, or does the network name now consist of a series of digits?
but at no time does it ever show in Airport Admin Utility, even after I have gone through steps 1-8 as above, and got an amber central light after sticking the paper clip in.
I'm confused about this. I don't see how you can have gone through steps 6-8 if the base station never showed up in AirPort Admin Utility. Also, is the network still working fine even though the light is yellow, or did it somehow revert to green?
The only network shown is when I click Other, which gives an ID series of numbers
When you are connected to the base station by Ethernet, the base station should show up in AirPort Admin Utility (steps 6-8) if its IP address is in the same subnet as the computer's IP address. This would be the case if the computer's Ethernet IP is manually configured according to step 2 and if the base station has been successfully reset (steps 3-5). To avoid confusion, I recommend turning AirPort off on the computer during these steps.
When you are connected wirelessly to the base station's network (to reconfigure, after completing step 8), there will be a check mark next to the network name in the AirPort status menu, and the base station should show up in AirPort Admin Utility. To avoid confusion, I recommend disconnecting the Ethernet cable from the computer when you connect wirelessly to reconfigure. (It should also be possible, instead, to reconfigure via Ethernet following a reset, if you change the computer's Ethernet IP setting to "Using DHCP" and relaunch AirPort Admin Utility.)
You shouldn't need to use "Other" in AirPort Admin Utility except possibly if a base station is set to create a closed network, which it would not be after a successful reset.
I wonder if this is the ID of the network that the eBay seller has set up, so I would need to get the password off him.
The numbers that appear in the "Address" field after you click "Other" (most likely 10.0.1.1) are just the computer's guess as to the LAN IP address of a base station you may wish to configure; their presence does not necessarily signify that a base station is being detected. The seller's password means nothing after the base station has been reset.

  • Airport Express B/G not visible on Airport Utility / Airtunes not working

    Hi Everybody,
I'm just experiencing a Airport Express/Airtunes Problem! Everything was working fine. I setted up this 1/2 year old Airport Express B/G as the only device via ethernet cable next to my FritzBox DSL Modem to have a wireless network. I use it for Airtunes / Printer Sharing & Wireless Networking. 1 Week ago I visited my friend, who has a new Airport Express N and we tried to extend his my network thru My AX. As I got back home, I wasn't able to find my airport via airport utility, so i hard reseted it and reconfigured it as I told above. Everything was working fine for about one hour until the music stopped and until then this device could not be found via Airport Utility and iTunes doesn't offer me an option to play music via Airtunes anymore.
But the crazy thing is: I have Internet, Printer Sharing is possible & my roommate can play music via Airtunes using his Windows XP PC and even see the device via the utility.
I tried some settings with the networking security, but there appears no difference neither in iTunes than in the Utility.
    Help much appreciated!
    Cheers

This morning a firewall security message showed up: Allow connections of myDNSresponder and Config...? I allowed all connections, it worked for maybe one hour and disappeared again. So I decided to set my firewall settings to "allow all incoming connections" which was set to "set access for specific services and applications.
Now everything works really fine with the airport express!
    Have A Nice Day
