Who's Using My Airport?

Hello All,
Does anyone know if there is a utility that will show who (or what) is connected to my Airport Extreme Wireless Router?
I looked elsewhere in the Airport Discussions and was only able to find a thread regarding other brands of routers.
I'm curious to know id such a utility exists for the Airport Extreme Router.
Thanks!

Hi there!
I'm not sure if another thread here hasn't answered your inquiry to some
extent or another; but one does address a question concerning what
computers are in the wireless network and some older software utilities:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=711260&tstart=0
The above link leads to a download for "airport management tools" v 3.4
and AirPort Management Utility asks for Airport 3.4 or Later, & won't go;
so when I check, my system is well beyond (and at one time had) the
asked for part. Other tool works fine; tells the user information about
the bandwidth and up/down speeds; that says it's a Client Monitor.
If you can make it all work, post back!

  • Who is using my airport

is there really no way to find out who is currently using my airport extreme.  I know I can get MAC addresses by using the airport utility.  But I want to know who is using my airport right now, not who has been using it is the past week.

The wireless clients listed by the airport utility may be connected currently or it may have been connected 6 hours ago.
Not in the Wireless Clients window of the AirPort Utility application that I am using.
Sounds like you may be looking at the  DHCP Clients window.
Wireless Clients will display a wireless device that is currently connected, and if the device logs off the wireless, that device will disappear from the Wireless Clients window within a few seconds.
When the device logs back on to the wireless, it appears again within a few seconds in Wireless Clients.
So, I will stand by my statement that Wireless Clients displays clients that are currently connected to the wireless network.
DHCP Clients (which from your description is what you are looking at) will display a client and the time that a new lease was granted or renewed, which could be minutes or hours depending on when that occurred. The device listing under DHCP Clients does not indicate whether the device is currently active on the wireless network or not....only that it has been granted a DHCP lease for the network.
If you are using more than one AirPort and have a device extending the network, the wireless device may be showing up under Wireless Clients on the extending device and not showing up on the "main" router. That is normal.  In this case, the wireless device would be a Wireless Client of the "extending" device, but a DHCP Client of the "main" router.
At least, that is the way AirPort Utility and Wireless Clients and DHCP Clients works here. Check the Wireless Clients tab on your version of AirPort Utility to see if it behaves as my verson does.

  • How do i find out who is using my airport express?

I have an airport express to extend my Wifi coverage and i am sure other people who have asked for the password in the past are still using it. Is there a way to see who is using it, when and block people? I could change the password, but I would like to find out first who is using it.

    1) Open AirPort Utility
    2) Hold down the option key on your Mac
    3) Keep holding the option key while you double click on the AirPort Express icon in the center of the AirPort Utility window
    4) Release the option key after you double click
Something like the example below will appear, with the Summary tab highlighted.....which in this example shows that there are two devices currently connected to the wireless network. If you click on the arrow next to each listing, then more information will be revealed about that particular device.

  • Can I discover who is using my airport extreme network?

I am seeing variable performance of my Airport Extreme wi-fi network in terms of download speed.  Some of the variance could, I think, come from the number of other users and the rate at which they are consuming bandwidth.  I don't know of a way to see: 1. Who is using the network and 2. Their activity level.  Is there a way to do so?

You can see the AirPort ID of each device that is connected to the wireless network, but information on how much bandwidth each device is using is not available in any Apple application.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click directly on Wireless Clients (near the bottom of the page)
A window will open to display the AirPort ID of each wireless device that is currently connected to the network

  • How do i see who is using my airport extreme

Looking for help in determining who is connected to my airport extreme and can I monitor their activity?

First, download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 which will contain the features you need. It is compatible with Lion as well as Mountain Lion, however, the installer app will refuse to install it on Mountain Lion. As I recall it installs on Lion without complaint.
This dilemma is easily solved though. You simply need to extract the app from the installer package using a package extractor like Pacifist.
    Download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/
Download AirPort Utility 5.6 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
After you get AirPort Utility 5.6 installed and running, come back and read the following.
I don't know of a better solution than to use Airport Utility - click Advanced, > Logs and Statistics > Logs. You will see the MAC addresses of the devices connected to your Airport. They're cryptic, but if you familiarize yourself with the MAC addresses of all your devices it's easy to spot an intruder.
MAC addresses are almost always printed somewhere on the exterior case of network devices. Keep a list of them in a convenient place.
"Monitoring activity" is more of a challenge. Depending on exactly what you want to monitor, you would need third party software to do that... I recall hearing about a program called Net Nanny so search for something like that.

  • How do i see who is using my wifi

How can I see who is using my airport wifi signal?

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Hold down the option key on your Mac while you double click on the AirPort Extrme icon
Wireless Clients will be displayed. Click the small arrow next to each client for more details on each connection.
If you see 5 wireless clients.....and you only have 4 wireless devices.....you may have an univited guest on your network.

  • Help! how many people using my airport?

    hello
well i have new neighbors (some college kids) and i was wondering if there is anyway that i can see who is using my airport express? i am sure i put a password to it but how do i check to see if there is one.
    thanx

To check the security settings of your Airport Express - start the Airport Admin Utility, click on the name of your Airport Express, click Configure, click the Airport tab, click the Wireless Security button. The type of security you are using will be shown. The utility will not (for security reasons) not show you you current password - but just to be sure, enter a new one. Update settings to the Airport Express. You will now need to reconnect to your Airport Express wireless network - and as proof security is working, your Mac will prompt you to enter the new password.

  • How to make sure I'm the only one who can manage my airport base station using airport utility?

I know we have to use the Airport Utility application to manage the Airport base station in order to create a new network, creating the SSID and chosing the encryption mode and setting the password but how I could be sure I'm the only one who have access to those settings? A user of my network can install the Airport Utility application and change those settings. With other routers like D-Link, to have access to the settings you need to know the admin password to modify the settings. I can't figure out how we can do this with Airport Extreme base station. It's maybe obvious but I'm in the cloud for the moment.

You can set a base station administrator password in order to limit who can administer the base station. With AirPort Utility v6.x, you can set this password on the Base Station tab.

  • HT4145 How can I use an Airport Extreme to act as a Range Extender for an Alcatel One Touch Y800Z WiFi modem/router? I get a message saying it cannot be extended. Thank you. Arup

How can I use an Airport Extreme to act as a Range Extender for an Alcatel One Touch Y800Z WiFi modem/router? As we live in a rural area and our landline broadband speeds are awful, I have moved on to a 3G provider in the UK (EE/Orange) and set up the wireless modem which is working very well with an iMac. I have an Airport Extreme base station which was previously connected with an Ethernet cable to the landline router, and two Airport Express stations as Range Extenders. I would now like to use the Airport Extreme and the two Express stations to extend the range of the Alcatel WiFi device. I have tried automatic and manual set up with the Airport Utility but at the crucial step for selecting a network to extend, although the WiFi device is recognised, I get a message saying it cannot be extended.
Thank you for any help you can provide.
    Arup

This is a problem with a lot of cheap end wifi hotspot like devices.. sometimes you can just swap the sim out to a real 3G wireless router.. that is a better approach IMHO than wireless repeater ever will be.
    In the meantime..
Have a go with the suggestion.. place the express as wireless bridge. With a computer connected to the wifi from alcatel unit.. (I am amazed Alcatel still are in domestic market.. I thought they sold out). Set the express to join the wifi.. you do this in the airport utility.. old one is easy.. but in v6 you have to trust to luck so to speak and hope the auto setup works.. tell us if you have trouble.
With the Express bridging.. you can then plug it by ethernet into the TC.. which will be in router bridge..
    ie
You can then run the connection from wireless or ethernet on the TC.. and it will relay back to the alcatel for internet.. all a bit dodgy but who knows.. it may give you what you need.
Wireless repeater is never particularly reliable in my experience. I would avoid it if possible.

  • How do I see who is accessing my Airport Express wi fi?

How do I see who is accessing or currently using my Airport Express wi fi?

    On your Mac....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Express icon
Look for Wireless Clients to see the number of currently connected devices. If you have 2 wireless devices and you see 3 wireless clients, you may have an uninvited guest on your network.

  • Who's using your wi-fi connection?

Is there a program or anyway to show who's using a wireless network at a given time? Like a feature that shows a list of computers that are on the wireless network?
    thx

Download the AirPort 4.1 install from here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport41formacosx.html
    1. Open the .dmg if it did not auto-open.
    2. Control-click "AirPortSW.pkg" and select "Show Package Contents"
    3. Open Contents
    4. Drag Archive.pax.gz to the Desktop
    5. Double-click Archive.pax.gz to unarchive the file
    6. AirPortConfig.framework is in ~/Desktop/Archive/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks
    7. Drag AirPortConfig.framework to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/
You will be asked to authenticate.
Airport Management Tool should work at this point.

  • How to use 2 Airport Extreme Units on a Network?

I currently have an Airport Extreme (AX) as my wireless host with internet connectivity, with an Airport Express also on the network to extend the range of coverage.
These past Holidays “Santa” delivered a new Mac Book Pro, along with a Time Machine which is built into an Airport Extreme. I am planning to install this to replace my current (less than 1 year old) existing AX. All of which begs the question as to what to do with the AX that I replace. Obviously selling it as a pre-loved item is an option. But are there other uses that I could put this AX to on my wireless network?
I currently have 2 PC’s and now 2 Mac’s on the network, plus 2 wireless printer / scanners, and our 2 i-Phones have access to the network also.
    Thanks, Bruce.

You have a Time Capsule, correct?
The Time Capsule can "extend a wireless network" as well as perform backup functions on the network.
You could continue to use your AirPort Express in another part of the house to provide a stronger wireless signal in that area. (I've yet to meet the first person who felt that they had too much wireless coverage in their home).
If you have a DVR or newer DVD player that requires an ethernet connection for advanced features from the internet, the ethernet port on the Express is "live" when it is set to "extend", so you might think about that option as well.
Hotels don't use ethernet nearly as much as several years ago, but I always take my spare Express on the road to hook up to the hotel's ethernet jack and create a wireless network in the room for the laptop or iPhone. Works great.

  • How to use 2 Airport Express units?

In my office upstairs I use an AirPort Express to tap into the wireless router downstairs wirelessly. Works great. In a bedroom also upstairs, I have a Blu Ray player I want to connect to the Internet. I thought if I got another AirPort Express unit in that Bedroom then it too could tap into the wireless router downstairs so I could then run an ethernet cable from the AirPort Express to the BluRay player. I tried that but when I look on my computer in the AirPort Utility screen, it only recognizes one of the AirPort Express units. That unit in the Bedroom continues to have a flashing yellow light and no internet connection. What do I need to do to get an internet connection in the Bedroom?

  • View who is connected to Airport

How can I view who's connected to the Airport Express at any given time and/or if anyone tried to connect.
    Thanks.

You can get a list of the connected wireless clients using the AirPort Utility, as follows:
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Advanced > Statistics > Logs and Statistics > Wireless Clients

  • Who is using my network

I apologise in advance if this is the wrong section to be posting this question, but I am very new to Mac's and I am not even 100% sure which part of the whole setup is the modem!!!
I have a shiny new iMac which is running through a Time Capsule wirelessly, both working fantastically, along with a netbook PC, AND the wireless printer, but I just want to make sure we are the only ones using my network. I have password protected it and made it secure.... I think, but would be happy to be able to visually identify who is actually surfing my net
Can someone please explain step by step how I check this. Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to the discussions forum Blundery.
If you've password protected your wireless network, the only people who can use it are those who know the password, so rest easy. Use WPA or WPA2, since the older WEP encryption is no longer considered secure - hackers can determine your WEP passwords given a little time and effort.
If you're still paranoid, read on:
The easiest way to determine what equipment is piggybacking on your wireless network is to use Airport Utility. Select your Time Capsule and click on the button "Manual Setup". Then, click on the text "Wireless Clients". This will bring up a chart and table with the MAC (Media Access Control) addresses of any wireless equipment on your network. The MAC addresses are in the table under the heading "Client". MAC addresses look like 64:23:A6:B4:2C:E5 or something (I made that one up). MAC addresses are as unique to their equipment as your fingerprints are to you.
The MAC addresses will correspond to your iMac, your netbook PC, and your wireless printer, assuming they're actually running at the time. Write those down someplace so you know what they are.
You can determine your equipment's MAC addresses in various ways. For instance, if you go to your iMac's Apple menu and select "About this Mac", then click "More Info..." then click Network, then click AirPort, scroll down near the bottom and you'll find the MAC address of your iMac. You're on your own finding them for your netbook and printer, but in many cases the MAC addresses are printed on the equipment case, or the box it came in.
If you can't account for a MAC address you're seeing in the "Client" list, you have a piggybacker. But you protected your network with a good password and WPA or WPA2 security, so there won't be any
I am not even 100% sure which part of the whole setup is the modem!!!
The modem is the box found at the other end of the wire connected to your Time Capsule's WAN port. Depending on how you get your Internet service, the box may or may not be in your home.
