Whoa! While looking at my sent msg it disappeared before my eyes!

Question

I went back to another message I had just sent few minutes earlier and it was gone too!!
Could this be related to my recent system upgrade to 6.1.2?
I use iPhone 4
More importantly how do I fix it?

Thanks for the quick response. I'm not sure if I can answer your questions but I'll try:
Question 1:
Not quite sure what the "root level" is but here are the various account folders I can see in this directory: G5/Users/rmcanulty/Library/Mail/
[email protected]@imap.gmail.com (an active account)
And this strangely named folder:
Mac_mcAnulty/ containing
/INBOX.imapmbox
/Attachments/
/Info.plist
/Messages/
Also, within the Mail directory there is also a "Mailbox" folder containing the same three items as the Mac_macanulty folder (see above):
/INBOX.imapmbox
/Attachments/
/Info.plist
/Messages/
Question 2:
Yes, MobileMe='the cloud.' Both the gmail account and the .mac account are set up as IMAP accounts in my Mail.app Preferences. So I'm not aware of the the server (MobileMe?) having been accessed by a POP account.
My questions:
1. Is it possible that the messages are still on the server, but inaccessible to me for some reason?
2. Where should I drag the messages (.emix files) I was able to recover with DiskRescue?
