Whoever starts video chat 1st gets to hear audio, other person: no sound?

Weird issue:
Person A: 24" iMac, 10.6.1 Snow Leopard, iChat 5, built in iSight and Mic
Person B: MacBook Pro, 10.6.1 Snow Leopard, iChat 5, built in iSight and Mic
Problem:
Person A starts a video chat with Person B. Person B answers and sees video and hears the audio from person A. However, Person A can not hear Person B, but can see the video.
Vice Vera.
Person B starts a video chat with A. B can see and hear A, but A can not hear B, only see them.
Obviously, I've check the audio settings on both ends and that is not the issue as the mics and speakers are working, its just they only work depending on who STARTS the video chat?
Any ideas?
-Scott

Hi Ryan,
A successful chat depends on several things.
Your Processor speed, what the processor is doing and your Internet Speed with normally the Upload being the controlling factor.
Alongside this you have what a particular Buddy is sending you in terms of a data feed.
At 64 bit your Processor will try to make a 640 X 480 pic at the best framerate it can manage. (15fps 20fps and 30fps tend to be the splits)
So lets say your processor is a Core 2 Duo and can do 64 Bit but it is an early Model and you have a web Browser and mail open.
If the Web Browser is n a site that refreshes the page it will make demands on the Processor, so will Mail periodically on mail fetches. If you happen to be doing a download even more processor will be used.
The Processor also has to deal with the incoming Video feed.
This is where the speed of your Buddy can come into play.
If they have a better Processor and a better Upload speed they can send you more data than iChat can buffer (or at least organise in to a constant stream).
The Upshot is that Audio tends to get dropped first or pixelation occurs.
Using 32 bit is like an extra layer of Capping that can smooth things out over and above the Bandwidth more direct method.

What happens if our video chat is not connecting with the other person?

    Hi,
Not really enough info to help constructively.
    Which Version of iChat ?
Is it iChat to iChat or iChat to Messages  (i.e Mac to Mac) or AIM (iChat) to PC AIM  (needs to be a compatible version)
Is this AIM to AIM (Includes AIM valid Screen Names from certain Apple IDs) ?
Is it Jabber to Jabber (this can only be done Mac to Mac in Messages and/or iChat) ?
Do you get any failure  message ?
In the Video Menu > Connection Doctor > Errors tab do you get any info ?
    NOTES
As mentioned it is iChat to iChat or iChat to AIM on a PC if the PC has a compatible version (which is not the latest)  (where it lists iChat it also means Messages in Mountain Lion)
It has to be either AIM to AIM IDs or Jabber to Jabber IDs
It cannot be Jabber to some GoogleTalk Web Browser Login (or Facebook)
It cannot be Jabber/Google Talk to the PC app called GoogleTalk
Google released an PC only App that will use Jabber protocols for Video (Called Jingle)
Their web Browser Plug-in also uses Jingle for Video and Audio chat but iChat and Messages use SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to connect.  The two are not compatible.
Facebook also run a  Jabber server and have apparently released their Own Plug-in  which can cause problems of it's own on a Mac.
However you also cannot video to a Web Browser Login on Mac or PC
If this is iChat 6 it does not Video on the Yahoo Accounts  (that is Text Only)
This means it cannot Video to any version of Yahoo on Mac or PC or any Web Browser method.

  • When i'm on video chat i can not see the other person?

when im on video chat i can not see the other person

Your speaker is working with all other Apps and Audio Calls?  If yes, it doesn't appear to be Hardware.  Don't know what is causing it, but if it is software related then you can try an iPhone Reset by holding the Sleep Button and the Home Button down together for a bout 15 to 20 seconds until you see the white Apple logo ...then just let go of the two buttons and wait until the iPhone comes back up to your lock-screen.  Try another FaceTime Call.  If it still doesn't work you might have to update Software to iOS 7.1.1 if you are not already on it.  If it still doesn't work, you might do a true iPhone Restore to a clean New In Box type configuration without Restoring from Backup.  Don't worry in that after you test this configuration you can then Restore from your last good Backup.  I would be thinking at that point that some Application you have on your iPhone was conflicting with the FaceTime App.

  • "Cannot Start Video Chat" error when trying to do video conferences

    Ahoy!
I've recently upgraded to a new still camera that unfortunately doesn't work with iChatUSBCam, so I invested in a nearly-new iSight to use with my PowerMac G4 instead. Although one-way video chat conferences work fine, I keep getting the error "Cannot Start Video Chat" whenever I try to do a video conference.
    The full error message reads:
    "*Cannot Start Video Chat*
Your computer is not capable of initiating a multiperson video chat.
Click Text Chat to invite the selected people to chat."
There are no error codes or any other text in this message. The available buttons are the purple ?, 'Text Chat' or 'Cancel'.
I have tried this on both my 1.25ghz PowerMac G4 and my 1.33ghz PowerBook G4, and my friends I am trying to chat with have tried to initiate the conference on their 2.16ghz Intel Core Duo MacBook and MacBook Pro, only to receive the same messages too.
When doing a one-way videochat, the + button to add more people to the conference is greyed out for all of us as well. We all display the video conference button (camera with the extra pages behind it) next to our names on our buddy lists though, so our computers all believe we're capable of it!
When clicking the ? button on the "Cannot Start Video Chat" dialogue, it brings me to the help page that tells me:
+"To join a multiperson video conference, you need any G5 computer, or a 1 GHz single processor G4, or a dual processor 800 MHz G4, and a broadband connection to the Internet.+
+To host a multiperson video conference, you need any G5 computer, or a 1 GHz dual processor G4. In addition, you need an Internet connection that supports a minimum download bandwidth of 384 Kbps, and a minimum upload bandwidth of 384 Kbps."+
Both of my machines are above 1ghz G4s, so according to this help file, it shouldn't prohibit me from at least joining a conference when I'm not the host, but both of my Intel-based friends get the same message when trying to host as well. We are all on respectable Broadband or Cable internet connections, so that shouldn't limit it!
Anyone got any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it? I see no reason why this shouldn't work!
    Thanks!

    Hi
First have you all set the Quicktime streaming setting, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed, set to 1.5mbps(dont use automatic)
In ichats prefs click on video and change bandwidth limit to NONE.
    Restart iChat.
Do a speed test on all sides and tell us the UP AND DOWNload speeds http://www.speedtest.net/

  • After connecting the clients to start video chat using RTMFP , Can the server finish the video chat

After connecting the clients to start video chat using RTMFP , Can the server finish the video chat between clients regardless of clients' will ?

    Hi,
I looked on this site http://portforward.com/routers.htm
It lists many routing devices both modems and routers.
I did not see the Surfboard you listed but that does not mean it does not route (It just means it is not in the list)
Your computer is getting the IP 192.168.1.3 which means a device somewhere between you and the internet is routing.
Most likely in System Preferences > Network for the connection method you are using you can see a "Router IP" (192.168.1.1 is most likely based on the IP you get)
Type this into to your Web Browser like you would Apple.com
You should get a Pop Up.
Hopefully it will tell what device you are now trying to Log in to.
This info may help in looking in the Port Forward list.
If not check all the Motorola devices listed and then iChat in the Next page.
The third page from the Link page I gave you will detail the default access info (IP and User ID and Password) for each device you visit.
You may find that there is a common User ID and password across the various devices and this may work for you.
At Random this one says admin and motorola as the User ID and Password. (others may say different)
Don't worry about the fact it says to set a Static IP at this stage Or the Port Forwarding info further down each page.
You will hopefully be now looking at the web pages stored on the modem.
They work like any other web pages with menu items and links to other pages.
Search all the menu items and link to see if the device has UPnP
It tends to be in different places on different routing devices but try Advanced or Admin as well as anything to to do with opening ports.
A Status page like the first pic on the second link page I listed may well tell you if it has UPnP enable or not (but this is not always the case)
Tell us what you find out or if you have some other routing device in between you and the Motorola Surfboard.

  • Stalls at "starting video chat"

    pbook 15" 1.5ghz w/ 1gb ram
    OS X 10.4.2 iChat 3.0.1
currently wireless in hotel ISP unknown - possibly timewarner
1232 down/1260 up (i know, can't be right, was 1100 down/280 up at one time)
    firewall disabled
I have tried connecting with the appleu3 test bots, and the invite gets to "starting video chat", and hangs until I cancel the chat. I have been trying to video chat with a friend back home where it still worked, and I have been unsuccessful thus far. I am in Austin, TX, and will me in the dorm at UT by Friday, where I hope to regain a reliable connection. When working with my friend (XP) it consistently states that i did not respond, however the test bots merely stall. Is there anything besides possible hardware issues in the hotel that could be preventing me from a successful test?
    Any advice is much appreciated

    HI Bpcunning,
It is almost certianly the hotel's connection to the internet/firewall that is the problem.
However not knowing whether it worked before going to the hotel is a bit of hinderence to being certain.

  • Starting video chat...

I am having a problem getting iChat (audio/video) to work between my computers. I have a mac G4 with Tiger/ chat av3, and a pc with AIM 5.9. Also a Lynksis router, Comcast cable.
I have assigned both computers with a static adress and opened up the applicable ports. I have been attempted to test them and have gotten to the point where they seem to try and connect. I dunno if it is the mac, pc, or router.
The message I get on the MAC is "Starting video chat with. . ."
The message I see on the pc is "starting live video".
However, no audio or video is observed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    thx.

    Hi John,
iChat will not do Audio ony chats with the AIM application.
To make the Audio work in iChat you have to do the following.
Go to System Preferences > Sound > Input tab
Select the 'right' mic and adjust the volume to repond at least halfway.
Go to iChat > Preferences > Video section > Microphone Drop down.
Select the same Mic there as well.
Also check the Show Audio Status is ticked in the View menu and the Microphone Enabled item is ticked in the Video menu.

  • Can't start video chat in Messages or iChat

Does anyone know why I'd be able to accept a video chat but not start one?
I cannot initiate a video chat with one particular buddy.  I have not yet been able to test with other buddies, so this could be on the other guy's end — but when he starts the video chat it works just fine.  We're both on AIM.
When I try to start the chat, he receives the notice and clicks accpet.  Then the chat hangs without us ever being able to see one another.  Messages on my Macbook Air (late 2010) writes an error log, which starts like this:
    Messages Connection Log:
2012-08-18 17:43:26 -0800: 0x7f91733f82c0: State change from No State to Invited.
2012-08-18 17:43:41 -0800: 0x7f91733f82c0: State change from Invited to Connecting.
2012-08-18 17:44:01 -0800: 0x7f91733f82c0: State change from Connecting to Ended.
    2012-08-18 17:44:01 -0800: 0x7f91733f82c0: Error -1 (An unknown error occurred.)
I have another computer with Lion; iChat on that computer throws the same error when I tried to start a chat with this buddy.  That suggests some sort of networking issue, I'd think, but I'm not certain.
Both of my computers can start a chat with appleu3test01 and with each other... we just cannot initate a chat with our friend.  I can text chat with the buddy via AIM.  And again, when the buddy starts the chat everything works.
My connection doctor in Messages shows good... I have plenty of bandwidth (~10Mbps down / 2Mbps up according to speedtest.net tonight) and a full cone router (Airport Extreme with a Time Capsule extending the network).  I've restarted all of my networking gear and all affected computers.  My buddy restarted his computer.  I know his router is a Time Capsule.  Neither of us have changed any settings that we know of.
I'm stumped... I've got no idea where to go from here.

    Hi,
Does he mean he can Video chat to other Mac Users ?
    If so Can you ?
Error 8 can be about ports and the LAN Set up or issues iwth feature in the modem or router that can block iChat.
IF he has no other contacts with Macs and is running AIM 6.5 or higher he may need to turn off the Real Time feature

  • I can't hear the other person while facetiming on the Imac

I cant hear the other person while face timing on my imac but they can hear me

    HI,
There have been similar issues with iChat and I will use that as an example first.
In iChat the Mic needs to be On (in the Video menu).
It also needs to be listed in iChat Menu > Preferences > Video section > Microphone Drop down and this needs to match ther Mic set up in System Preferences > Sound > Input.
In addition to this the Mic needs to be "turned up" high enough in the System Preferences to work with the app.
So If you Buddy cannot hear you it is your Problem when it comes to iChat.
If you cannot hear the Buddy it is much more likely that they have not set up the Mic in System Preferences or have the Mic Off in iChat.
Moving to FaceTime you will find a Mic Setting in the Video menu (if you have two or more Mics).
If you do then the System Preferences > Sound > Input  and the volume setting there needs to match the choice in the App.
As it is your contact that you cannot hear you need to get them to check their settings first.
As for your end, it will be worthwhile doing a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

  • I just bought this iPhone 4S second hand and during incoming and outgoing calls I can't hear the other person talk unless it's on speaker or if I have headphones in. I don't know what to do I've turned up my volume and checked my settings!! Need help

I Just bought a second hand iPhone 4S I am having issues with the hearing during incoming and outgoing calls, I have turned the volume up and checked my settings but I still have trouble hearing the other person speak. It works if it's on speaker or if I have headphones plugged in. I need help desperately!!!!! Any suggestions on what to do???

    Hey Itsanaasaunders,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues hearing sound while on a call (receiver wise, not speakerphone). The following resource provides troubleshooting steps for this symptom:
If you can't hear a person on a call or voicemail or if the sound quality is poor on iPhone - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203800
    Clear the receiver
The iPhone receiver won't work properly if it's blocked or dirty. Here's where the receiver is:
Follow these steps, testing after each:
    - Make sure nothing is blocking the receiver, such as a case or film.
If you have a new iPhone, remove the plastic film on the front and back of the device.
    - Check the receiver opening to see if it's blocked or dirty. If necessary, clean the receiver opening with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush.
    - While you're on a call, turn on speakerphone. If you still can't hear, then your network or reception could be the issue. Try calling again later or from a different location.
    Restart and update
    1. Restart your iPhone and test again.
    2. If there's still no sound or poor sound quality, update to the latest version of iOS.
    Get more help
If you've tried these steps and there's still no sound or poor sound quality from your iPhone, contact Apple Support.
    Thanks,
