If this is related to sending emails, then you can turn off the send sound: Mail > Preferences > General. Now uncheck Play sounds for other mail actions.
If this is related to iMessage, then iMessage > Preferences > Alerts > uncheck Play a sound:
If the " whoosh" sound continues, System Preferences > Audio > Sound Effects. Uncheck Play user interface sound effects.

  • The sound on my macbook pro is not working

The sound on my macbook pro is not working. When I increase the sound, the icon appears as if everything is working, but no sound comes from the speakers. Earphones don't work either. I have tried a PRAM reset but at times, this doesn't even work. It's really frustrating having to restart my computer every time I want the sound to work, and even when I do that, theres a 50 50 chance of it working again. It generally happens after my laptop goes to sleep and I wake it up. Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it or even know what caused it?
There are a lot of discussions around the earphone jack but I have checked that. I've tried a PRAM reset which hasn't worked, and my sound output is set to Internal speakers.
    HELP!!

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure Mute is not enabled.
    2. Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    3. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    4. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

  • The Sound On My MacBook Pro Isn't Working

The sound on my MacBook Pro is usually fine, but today it didn't work. For example, I tried listening to music on iTunes and watch videos but the volume wouldn't work at all. When I go to turn up the volume, it seems to turn up ok, but when I try to put on some music, it doesn't work at all. I then tried using my brother's Apple headphones on my MacBook Pro, and then the sound worked normally. I really would like this fixed so if someone could help me that would be great, because I don't want to keep using my brother's headphones just to watch a video or listen to music. Thank you to anyone who helps!

    Hey
I did a NVRAM reset, and nothing happened. The sound stayed the same. Whats an audio output port, where can you find it, and where can you find the red light? When I try turning up the volume, instead of turning it up a cross sign appears under the speaker, thus no volume turns up. The menu bar right at the top of the screen - the speaker icon is not black, but more a very light grey.
    Thanks for helping though!

  • The sound on my macbook pro does not work if I plug headphones in I can still hear but it will not project volume out loud and when I try to turn up the volume it is just greyed out what do I do ?

The sound on my macbook pro will not project anything if I plug in headphones I can hear but when I take them out and try and turn up the volue the speaker is grey and the bars under it are white with a no volume sign ( circle with a line through it) how do I fix this ?

  • How do i stop the chiming sound on my macbook pro?

There's an annoying chiming sound on my Macbook Pro that goes off sporadically when I have the volume turned up and I have no idea how to turn it off.  I'd like to make it go away.  Any answers would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Check the iCal app to make sure you don't have a periodic event set up to go off every so often.
Or check the Date & Time preference pane in System Preferences to make sure the clock isn't set to chime on the hour.

  • I have no sound on my macbook pro. It only shows Apple TV/Airplay on devices to chose. My internal speaker option has vanished

I have no sound on my Macbook pro. My devices options shows only Apple Tv/Airplay. My internal speakers option has vanished

Which model MacBook Pro do you have (e.g., "15-inch Late 2011") and which version of OS X are you running?
    Clinton
MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2011), OS Mavericks 10.9.4, 16GB RAM, 960GB SSD, 27” Apple Thunderbolt Display

  • I can't get sound on my MacBook Pro

I can't get any sound from my MacBook pro.  I have checked setting and volume is at full sound

Have you gone to settings > sound to make sure your built-in speakers are selected? That would be my first guess for troubleshooting.

  • The sound on my Macbook Pro does not work.

The sound on my Macbook Pro does not work.  When we press the volume buttons, the sound icon pops up, but the bar is full with a small "Does not work" circle below it, and nothing happens when I hit volume up or done.  I went into system preferences, but there aren't any options there that I can see to change it.

"Unfortunately, it doesn't provide any help for a MacBook Pro, other than indicating to call Apple Support" (sic).
Au contraire. TS1574's title and affected products are thusly:
"Troubleshooting issues with no audio from built-in speakers on Macs
Products Affected Mac mini, MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac"
As a result, the instructions of the article are relevant. To be sure, follow those steps, the last of which is to contact Apple.
So, by way of reminder, here are the steps to troubleshoot the audio on your MacBook Pro. There is no red light, so the port is likely fine. Headphones work, so clearly your sound card is fine.
    1. Ensure an incorrect version of OS X is not installed. If one is, then reinstall or erase/install after backing up your data.
    2. Remove any external audio devices from USB, firewire, etc.
    3. Open Sys Prefs > Sound > Output
If Internal Speakers is listed, select it and test again.
If Digital Out is listed, confirm again that all external audio devices and cables have been removed.
If mute is selected, unselect it.
If the volume slider is low, raise the volume.
If the above simply doesn't fix it, the issue may be a corrupted plist. Apple Support might be able to help troubleshoot the issue further, per the last step of TS1574.
I hope it gets resolved for you. Good luck.

I am getting no sound on my macbook pro. The sound does not play when I plug in headphones either.  I have tried making it louder quieter, restarting my computer, HELP!

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. If your model has an audio-out (headphone) port, and anything is plugged in, unplug it before putting the system to sleep.
    3. If you've installed something called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and reboot. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. If you've installed an equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and reboot.
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
    7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Reboot and test.
    9. Boot in safe mode. Don't log in; just reboot as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    10. Reset the NVRAM.
    11. Reset the SMC.
    12. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data. For a possible shortcut, see this thread.
    13. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

I can hear a loud 'CD spinning/fan like' sound from my MacBook Pro intermittently. Definitely not the audio as i muted it. No CD either. And the only programs running are words, safari and mail.

It sounds like the fan but this is the first time I hear it in the past 6mths using this Mac. If its the fan, shouldn't the sound be there all the time and not intermittent?

  • Sound using my macbook pro in safe mode?

Can i enable sound using my macbook pro in safe mode?

    About Safe Boot:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
OS X Mavericks: Start up in safe mode
Starting up in “safe mode” may help you diagnose problems you’re having with your Mac.
[Note: To print these instructions, open Help Viewer’s Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear), then choose Print.]
Shut down your Mac and wait 10 seconds.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator (spinning gear).
To leave safe mode, restart your Mac normally without holding down any keys during startup.
    {The third-party utility scan you installed may be something (hard) to be rid of, too}
You could try to boot into Recovery and use OS X Utilities, such as Disk Utility to
repair disk permissions, and other things, to avoid initial startup in OS X itself:

  • How can I play sound from my MacBook Pro through my iMac?

I have a MacBook pro which I am looking to use for only iTunes or Spotify for the time being but the iMac built in speakers are better.
I am internet sharing from an ethernet on my iMac and the Macbook pro is connected to the shared network.
Can I play music from Spotify on my macbook pro but out of my iMac speakers?
    Thanks
    James

For sound, try the audio output port and connecting to the RCA  audio input ports on your Pioneer receiver.  Use something like this:

  • No sound on my Macbook pro, red light.

My Macbook Pro won't play anything out loud, through the speakers, like when i have to watch a video or hear some music, i have to put my headphones in the Macbook, and then it can play the sound, but if i take them out, there are no sound and there is a red light where the headphones are supposed to be plugged in (The video or music continue playing, i just can't hear it).
I read something about "International speakers" and it's stuck on a speaker in settings, and to solve it, you just have to play some music with the headphones in the computer, and then take them out of the computer, while the music is playing, and then it should work - but it didn't work.
I've tried to turn off the macbook for a long time and then start it up, didn't work. I've tried to just normally restart it, didn't work either.
The problem just came suddenly, I didn't do anything specific before it happened, one day it just didn't work, which is about 3 weeks ago now.
My Macbook pro is 2 years old in May, and i've updated it with anything that IOS said i should.
Hope you guys know what i can do.

    Try the following: I
nsert the earphone jack several times.
Blow real hard into the audio output port. Use compressed air if you have it.
Take a cocktail stirrer or a tooth pick and wiggle it inside the port.
The internal switch is stuck when you see the red light.
    Ciao.

  • I can no longer get sound on my macbook pro.

HELP! Have I somehow turned my sound off on my MacBook Pro.

Look in the headphone output, is there a red light?
If so, try plugging and unplugging your headphones, also try a different set of headphones, all the jacks are noe exzctly the the same size, if there is a red light it means the MBP is in digital mode. You can try rebooting with headphones plugged in, or cut the end off a Q tip and GENTly insert it in the headphone jack and GENTLY "massage" it, stop at he least bit of resistance, this will some times free up the the micro switch that does the digital thing.

  • No Sound, Safari Slow & MacBook Pro Very Slow after upgrading to Yosemite.

    Hi All,
Upgrading to Yosemite has resulted in the following issues with my computer/laptop:
    1. I have lost all sound and the sound options are no longer there after looking in Preferences.
    2. Safari only loads parts of pages and then takes forever to load the rest.
    3. Generally the computer has been slow with processes taking over the CPU and there seems to be a lot of hard memory swaps.
Attached is the EtreCheck.    Any help would be appreciated.   It appears that I also am missing some daemons that are launching.
