Why 200 dpi for book export?

Why is the default 200dpi when exporting books to PDF/JPG?
Shouldn't we be allowed to select what dpi we want or default to 300dpi?

Whilst I agree it would be nice to select the desired image resolution, the truth of the matter is a RAW file exported as a file or via PDF at it's actual size (the final size you crop or not) at 200ppi will reproduce as well as a 300ppi image.
As long as the output resolution is processed from the original RAW file and not resampled in Photoshop for example.
So it's NOT a conspiracy as stated below, it just all that is needed to produce the final product from the original RAW file at it's actual physical dimension.
Plus it allows for a smaller file to upload.

  • How do I set a dpi for an exported image?

I have an illustrator file that needs to be set up for print. The publication requested an image that is x" by x", 300dpi to satisfy a 150 line screen. I generally work exclusively for the web, so this is all somewhat new to me.
Because illustrator is a vector program I obviously can't set dpi on an *.ai file. So this lead me to looking for a dpi option when saving or exporting a raster file. I have had no luck with this. So I have come here hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
So how do I set a specific dpi for a raster image created in illustrator?
Would I just multiply the inch dimensions by 300 and use that as a pixel dimension?

Honestly, I'm not sure I understand what point you're trying to make now. It doesn't seem relevant to the original question about exporting an image from Illustrator.
It's not, I added a second question here:
Also, how does illustrator determine the pixel value of an inch if I can't set a ppi? For instance, if I set up a 1in wide file it will be 72px wide.
Well, the scale-ability of a vector graphic doesn't put it in a permanent state of ongoing change. If it's just sitting there and it measures 1 inch wide, then it's one inch wide. If you scale it to 2 inches wide, then it's 2 inches wide. If Illustrator's Info panel says it's 2 inches wide and I print it at 100%, it will be 2 inches wide on paper without fail. It couldn't make more sense.
Exactly. So if Illustrator is setting the resulting image to 2in and a vector element set to a width of 1px is 1/72" then how can this:
"Pixel value of an inch..." doesn't apply to the artboard.
    be true?
I can't reproduce that here. What document profile are you using? I get accurate sizing of placed images whether I use Print or Web. I didn't try the others.
I am using the print profile with width and height both at 1in. Nothing else is altered.

  • Scan in dpi for iphoto book

I just bought a new epson scanner with the ability to scan in from very low to very high dpi. I bought it to scan in 4x6 color prints that I then will bring into iphoto to make apple photo books. What dpi should I scan in at? The scans go quickly at 300 dpi but that seems awfully low. At over 4,000 dpi the scan are really slow - it could take me a year to scan in the pictures to make a book. Does anyone know what dpi the books can handle or have advice on what I should scan each photo at?

I have been scanning in several thousand old photos, snapshots, from years ago.
I followed MOST of the recommendations from a great article in MacWorld from June 2006, "New LIfe for Old Photos," by Derrick Story.
He does recommend scanning the original negatives if at all possible. Frankly, even though I do have most of the negatives, I think this would take far too much time and effort to find the ones I want, organize them and scan them. After all, mine are snapshots, not high-quality professional photos. So, I am scanning the photos themselves.
That said, he recommended getting a decent scanner. I wore out my HP flatbed scanner, and am in the process of wearing out my Epson perfection 2400. It was about $100 and can scan negatives and slides, and has some nice corrective features. I am especially glad that it has color restoration. Some of my old photos have discolored to an unpleasant reddish tinge and the color correction by the scanner is usually better than iPhoto's enhance.
His recommendations for resolution are as follows:
Unless you plan to use your images only on the Web or as e-mail attachments, I recommend a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. If you use a lower resolution, you won't capture enough data to make high-quality prints at the same size as the original--never mind making enlargements, In fact, you may need to go higher than 300 dpi.
When choosing a resolution, consider the quality of your source material and the size at which you might want to reproduce the image in the future. If you'll want to reprint the photo only at its original size or smaller, a resolution of 300 dpi shoudl suffice. However, if you want the prints bigger than the original, I recommend an output resolution of 600 dpi. If your print is in particularly good shape, and you'd like to make a very large reproduction, you may even consider scanning at 1,200 dpi (if your scanner offers this resolution). But keep in mind that file size and scanning time increase substantially as you up the resolution. So, you'll need to balance your ambition for getting as many pixels as possible with the realities of your storage space and free time......You should also consider whether your original image justifies saving all of the those extra pixels, You won't be able to make a stunning 11-by-14-inch print from an underexposed, grainy 4-by-6-inch photo just because you scan it at 600 dpi.
He also gives a table of maximum print size for the original print and dpi. For a 4x6 print at 300 dpi, the maximum print size at 240 dpi is 5x7.
For a 4x6 print at 600 dpi, the maximum print size at 240 dpi is 10x15.
A 5x7 print at 300 dpi, the maximum print size at 240 dpi is 6x9, and at 600 dpi is 12x18.
The file size of the 4x6 at 300 dpi is about 6MB, but the 5x7 at 600 dpi is 36MB!
In addition, he recommends saving all the scanned photos as TIFFs to preserve all your original photos as a backup. As TIFFs, the photos will be larger file sizes, but the data will not be lost by compression, as with JPEGs.
He then recommends making JPEG versions to be working copies of your originals using Automator. Then, when you have the JPEGs, import them into iPhoto.
I don't do that. I am making DVDs from iMovies of all our old photos and videos. I have all my photos as JPEGs and I think the quality of the photos in my DVDs and photobooks has been better than the original snapshot most of the time.
Maybe when I am finished with all the early years, I will save my newer digital photos as TIFFs, since there are no negatives or prints from negatives with them.
Obviously, the scanning resolution depends on your usage of the scanned photos. I did not imagine that I would ever want photos larger than 5x7s, so all my photos have been scanned at 300 dpi. The images look great in my DVDs.
I am now scanning in some that were printed as tiny squares, about 2 1/2x2 1/2 in. I am doing those at 600 dpi so that they will look ok when we play the DVD on large-screen TVs.
Hope this is helpful to you. Maybe you can find that article at MacWorld's site: http://www.macworld.com/magazine/

Aperture 3.1.2 When exporting files to Finder is creating a folder for each file, that means export 200 files is creating 200 folders for each files. Does anyone knows how to fix this. Thanks

No. This is NOT true. I've been battling with this for a couple hours.
    I choose Export>Versions
    choose
    Subfolder Format: Project Name
    no custom subfolder
    Name Format: Current Version Name.
Aperture creates project folders for each image and names them Projects1, Projects2, Projects3 etc.
To be sure, I have no project named Projects
    x
This particular Aperture library has 16 projects. you can see in the screen grab it's created more than 30 folders
If I uncheck the Subfolder, that is say NONE, I just get images and images and images, not in their project folders (of course, because I've said NONE, so why would it put them in project folders?)
I just want to export the entire library and have the versions placed in folders named by the projects from which they came.... ez enough, no?

Sounds like it's a problem with the Acrobat settings. Did you set them to the same resolution?

  • Why there are no books for sale in iBooks?

    Hej,
I just want to ask everyone why there are no books for sale in iBooks in Sweden. I mean this is really disappointing because I want to buy and read new books and there are no books for sale. If anyone has an answer to my query please reply. Thank you

It's unfortunately an issue of sorting out all of the legalities for apple to sell books in your country and unfortunately haven't been able to do that for Sweeden as of yet. And so your iBooks store will only have the out of copyright (or free) books available for download. I can only assume apple is working to bring the bookstore to more countries, if you really need books you can make iTunes account for a different country but to do so you would need either a credit card or an iTunes gift card from that country.
Otherwise hold tight till they open they iBook store in your country

  • Optimal DPI and size for book?

I will be scanning slides for a ibook project which means I can size them any way I want. Can anyone tell me the best DPI that the ibook printers like. Rather than let the program resize I'd prefer to do it myself, is there a way of finding out the exact photo box dimensions so I can size my scan exactly.
    Thanks for any help.

I will be scanning slides for a ibook project which means I can size them any way I want. Can anyone tell me the best DPI that the ibook printers like.
Any photo that will print less than 180 DPI will generate a low resolution warning - Any thing over 300 DPI is overkill - so between 180 and 300 dpi for the final print
Rather than let the program resize I'd prefer to do it myself, is there a way of finding out the exact photo box dimensions so I can size my scan exactly.
    The photo frames are in a 4:3 ratio and range from about 1 3/8 x 1 7/8 to 8 1/2 x 11 (the full page is not 4:3)
Since your photos are not going to be 4:3 unless you crop them you may want to right click on them after placing them and choose fit to frame so the entire photo prints

  • Why the color mismatch when exported key to mov?

Keynote colors are rich and bright, but get all dull when exported to a mov.
Anyone know why this happens, or better yet have a solution?

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply.  No, I haven't converted any color images from RGB to CYMK.  The original graphic file was made as RGB.  The colored box in PM7 is set to the Color Options of:
    Type: Spot
    Model: RGB
    (R 255, G 0, B 0)
As said, in PM7 the two red objects look identical in colour tinting etc on the screen, and you can't tell the difference.  But when the doc is converted to PDF the difference is obvious.
After posting to this forum last night (Australian time), I wondered if it had something to do with dot resolution.  The graphic file is 300 dpi, whereas the red PM box is filled with color that may be at a much lower DPI, causing a dullness in the color.  I assume the PM 7 default for this can't be altered. Maybe there is a setting in Distiller that could handle this, so that the colors are equalised.
The solution I'm currently using is to remove the box (or oblong) containing PM's RGB Red, then make another graphic file which is RGB Red (either at 300 dpi or 200 dpi, either TIFF or JPG, it doesn't matter), of the same page size as the PM doc, then place it onto the page and send it to the back so that everything else sits on top of it.  When converted to PDF you now can't tell the difference between the RGB Red in both graphics.
I'm happy with the result, but it's a workaround.
    Thanks,
    Roger3

  • What dpi for best quality?

    hi all,
my digital photo files are all 9 mb 300 dpi Tiff.
I would like to save HD space by making them jpgs.
in order to get good iPhoto book quality - does it matter if I have them as 72 dpi or 200 dpi or 300 dpi files as long as I keep them 9 mb?
    thanks,
    alexander

    Alexander:
Since Apple prints the books at 300 dpi you can keep your files at that and you'll be fine. Converting the tiffs to jpgs will reduce the files size but as long as you keep the overall pixel dimensions you'll be all right.
A file that Photoshop reports as 300 dpi and 3000 x 2000 pixels will probably be reported by iPhoto to be 72 dpi but with the same number of pixels. The difference is the first will have a default print size of 10" x 6.6" the iPhoto version will show a print size of 41.6" x 27.7 inches. It's just a numbers game. When you choose a print size the application will squeeze those pixels into the print dimensions and thus change the dip for that particular print.

  • Using Address Book Exporter to move Address Book Contacts to Palm Desktop

I have had strangely mixed results using "Address Book Exporter" to create files that can be imported into Palm Desktop.
I really want to export all 1200 of my Address book cards to my new Treo 700P. Too complex?
I set up a new group in my Address Book and placed about 400 cards in it. I then used Address Book Exporter to export all of these records using template "Palm Desktop" onto a .txt file on my hard drive.
When I opened my Palm Desktop application and clicked on import, I first had to cause the dialogue box to show all files rather than just "readable files" in order for the exported files to be available. When I clicked on the file of 400 Address book cards that I had exported, I got the dialogue box similar to FileMaker where you have to line up the receiving fields in the Palm Desktop application with the fields in the file that Address Book Exporter created.
When I set the "fields" drop-down menu to "addresses" and set the "Delimiters" drop-down menu to "Palm Desktop", everything just lined up automatically. No futher adjustments were needed. I just clicked OK and the 400 records were transferred to my Palm Desktop Address list - ready to further transfer to my new Treo 700P - successfully.
But when I went through this exact same routine, instead exporting all of the cards in my Address book, when I got to the last step and set the two drop down menus - the "fields" drop-down menu to "addresses" and set the "Delimiters" drop-down menu to "Palm Desktop" - nothing happened. The fields in the exported file did not line up at all. The created export file I opened showed only one "superfield' with all the data in it (just as the earlier example had, at first) which would not change to all of the fields needed to line up with the Palm Desktop importing fields as had happened in the first example.
Why the two different reactions to what seems to be the same routines? Does Address Book Exporter have a cap on the size of the export it can handle?
    I just don't understand it.

  • Address Book Exporting ... the Case of the Missing Spouse ... ?

… and missing children and missing birthdays, too.
I have had problems customizing address labels, which I discussed in detail in a separate message, entitled Wonky Address Labels. In fact, I gave up on using Apple Address Book and decided to export the database, put it in Excel, and do some column merging to get a one-time solution to my label-printing problem for my Christmas cards.
Yeah, sure I would … when Address Book will not export in anything other than an arcane address book file format.
So it was back to this forum, to review exporting suggestions. Two seemed to be offered and I tried ‘em both; first, Address Book Exporter at:
    gwenhiver.net/applications/addressbookexporter/index.php
and second, some special mail scripts at:
    http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html
These were both fun to use and worked pretty well, producing tab-delimited text files. But neither will do a complete export of the database; they won’t export spouse names, anniversary dates, children’s names or spouse/children’s birthdays ( which I had put in an ‘Other Date’ field ) … nor, BTW, will they export custom fields.
Well, if I can’t print custom labels with Apple Address Book and can’t export the full database, I guess hand-written Christmas card envelopes have a certain panache.
Or, I suppose I might use my 10-year old Windows software that I run on Virtual PC.
It would be nice if Apple would fix this Address Book exporting problem. Frankly, I don’t like the idea of having data in a database that I cannot export as a simple text file. In fact, if I had known I could not get my data OUT, I would not have put it IN to start with.
Any suggestions for exporting ALL the fields of the Apple Address Book database would be welcome.
    DICK

value = value;Oh, so you have one of those new compilers that reads your mind and knows which value is which in that statement, huh?
    Lucky.
The rest of us are stuck doing this.value = value;so that the compiler can distinguish the member variable from the method parameter.

why does my Mac Book pro keep restarting and how can it be fixed

It would be nice if you could include a kernel panic log to verify that your problem is...
Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
