Why 64 bit?
Is there any particular advantage 64 bit has over 32 or is it just hype? Thanks!
Finley
A 64 bit system can address more RAM. That's great for desktops, for which RAM is pretty cheap. I've got 5 GB RAM in my PowerMac G5 dual core and could add more if I need it.
I wish I had more RAM on my MacBook Pro. But with the limited space available that would probably require installing 2 GB RAM sticks, which if available would be horrible expensive. So, at the moment, that advantage for 64-bit isn't all that relevant.
Another advantage of 64-bit is a wider data path, meaning potential processing of more data per time unit. That's going to become very important for lots of programs in the future. But as a practical matter, except for scientific software, most software hasn't been tweaked for 64-bit processing.
For most people, right now, 64-bit is more hype than reality. For some people, with the right software, it does have real advantages. And it will become more important as time goes by.
Fortunately, Apple lets one run 32 and 64 bit applications side by side, and 32 bit applications will be around for a while, maybe a pretty long while.

Very slow BITS download on SCCM client
I have a problem with one Windows 2012 server and SCCM client BITS downloads. Jobs created by SCCM client and under SYSTEm account are extremely slow, some 40-60Kbit/sec only. Link itself between client and SCCM 2007 server is 1..1.5Mbit/sec.
After a couple days I have exchausted my ideas. BITS GP policies are in place, minimum at workhours is 100kbit/sec but download is always 40-60Kbit/sec. Is it workhours or not. 17Mb file I can download over http manually in seconds. It also downloads
with seconds when I created schedule task under system account where there was row
start-bitstransfer -source http://server/test.cab -destination c:\folder\test.cab
I tried changing permissions on SCCM side, give anonymous user rights to download, put NTAuthenticationProviders to "NTLM" but without any changes on download speed. To download this 17Mb file with SCCM client takes hours. Of course, if I switch
to CIFS/SMB then it also gets files within seconds but I really don't want to do that.
Any ideas why BITS jobs created by SCCM client are so slow? How can I tell to it that link is quite good and you can download faster.Started yesterday one job and at morning its status was TRANSFERRED.

Pull-DP and BITS Download Problem
Hi,
We have a ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 primary site, a remote Pull-DP and a remote DP with MP in untrusted forest, working on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
DP replication works well if I use primary site server as a source but it doesn't work if I use remote untrusted DP as Pull-DP source. I've read that it supported scenario to use untrusted DP as a source DP.
Here is an error that I came accross and the troubleshooting steps I've tried:
When I run "bitsadmin /list /allusers" command it shows "TRANSIENT_ERROR"

Xml pages won't load using latest Firefox 7, worked fine in earlier versions
A web app that loads and displays xml files using javascript and xsl stylesheets is breaking since upgrading to Firefox 7.
These pages load successfully using Firefox 3 and 4, and all versions of IE.
I can't figure out why, bit it breaks when returning to pages that have already been successfully loaded.
Error console shows:
"Component returned failure code: 0x8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED) [nsIDOMXMLDocument.load] ... data: no"
but this is occurring for a file that had been successfully loaded previously.
Additional info:
I am getting the following warning for pages that do load successfully:
Warning: Use of Document.load() is deprecated. To upgrade your code, use the DOM XMLHttpRequest object.
I know I will need to deal with this issue sometime in the near future, but the structure of the data means that I need to load stylesheets from a directory above the directory containing the xml data being loaded, and the security features of XMLHttpRequest won't allow this. So a move to using XMLHttpRequest means restructuring the data, which is a major overhaul.A good place to ask advice about web development is at the mozillaZine Web Development/Standards Evangelism forum.<br />

How do you expect your OS, your application(s) and writing a relatively big file all to run on an already too-full drive?
Sue, you've been around here long enough, go out and get a couple more drives, and clean the junk off your system drive. That ought to be OS, Apps only. -
Distribution with only .DLL?
Is it possible to distribute an application package that uses a database connection with only the Oracle.DataAccess.dll file in the application's /bin/ directory? We're trying to minimize pain and be able to distribute the software package WITHOUT requiring the user to install anything except our software.
Hi,
Well, just because something is in a .NET DLL doesn't mean that it can't have external dependencies as well. For example, there are DLLs in the .NET Framework library that depend on external (unmanaged) DLLs in order to call native methods.
I'm not sure what to say about the exactly why bit - the reason is because there are additional dependencies. Using Instant Client "Lite" with ODP.NET is about a 30MB distribution.

Hello all, I have a general Question: How can I find out, who fills up a Data file? I've several identical databases (7.4.3/AIX) in different locations; In one location the TRANSFER.dta grows up very fast. The datafile grows in April up to 2GB - Problems (AIX allows a max size from 2GB), so I altered a second File - TRANSFER_2.dta. But now - 4 month later - the file is grown up to 1,9GB.
In the other locations the files have between 300MB and 800MB. The stuff produce the same, have the same way to work with the database and works with the same Application.
Now I want to know where the reason is. The extents are 17 - not so much i think.
Did you have any Ideas?
Thanks a lotFirst of all, people don't fill up datafiles. They insert records into tables which are assigned to tablespaces which write to datafiles. So what you actually need to do is find out which table on the tablespace using these files is growing so fast. A query like this might help...
select s.segment_name, s.segment_type, sum(s.bytes) total_bytes_for_table
from dba_segments s
where s.tablespace_name in ( select f.tablespace_name
from dba_data_files f
where f.file_name = '&filename')
group by s.segment_name, s.segment_type
order by 3 DESC
/In an ideal world there will a single table or index that will be way bigger than anything else and that's your culprit.
The "why" bit can only be answered then. A likely cause would be some logging activity that is enabled in one database but not the other and which people have forgotten to housekeep.

KB3044132 shows as installed for Flash Player update, and the Control Panel Flash Player icon for 32-bit shows 17.0.0.169 installed (I have 64-bit and 32-bit), but the Manage Add-Ons for Shockwave is Enabled and showing version 17.0.0.134! When I check the version using Adobe it only shows 17.0.0 and not the important part, so I cannot tell if Adobe detects 17.0.0.169 or 17.0.0.134! I think I need to know if IE11 64-bit has 17.0.0.169 also. Please advise because Microsoft technical support says to contact Adobe about this. Please delete my entry in Adobe general forums, Bridge general discussion as michaelh94875078. I did not see Flash Player on the list of communities provided during my first post.
It occurs to me that maybe Microsoft will not allow their 17.0.0.169 KBitem to go out until their next update on the second Tuesday of May for their convenience and reputation! I want any update for Flash Player to be installed immediately for security. That is why I tend to use Firefox with NoScript and Web of Trust when I use a Google search. I will be watching the next Microsoft update to note if the KBitem it said was not appropriate for my computer - goes in!

Hi michaelh94875078,
I'm sorry, I misread your previous post and thought it had been installed. From my experience with Microsoft Updates is that some times they depend on some update being installed. I'll run Windows Updates and install all updates, then run Windows Updates again after all updates finish installing. Sometimes it finds new updates that weren't there before, and sometimes it doesn't. You can try that route, or download the Microsoft update posted at the bottom of the Flash Player Issues | Windows 8 page. Download the one that corresponds with your OS version. You may want to bookmark this tech note for future reference in case Microsoft Updates fails to detect the update is available for your system.

why do I get an error message when I start safari 5.1 telling me I need to open browser in 32 bit mode in order to "view movie" ? This occurs when I start safari on the opening page (the page with all the boxes for most viewed web sites). This had never occurred with safari up until the latest updates to safari & OSX [Version 5.1 (6534.50)] and OSX 10.6.8.
also, I'm not trying to view a movie - this occurs for the page previews that load when safari opens.

Hi, Tom.
FYI: You've not stated which of your listed Macs is having the problem. However, the following may help in any case:
1. Did you install Front Row using the Front Row hack on a Mac that did not ship from the factory with Front Row installed? If so, See my "Uninstalling the Front Row hack" FAQ. This has been known to cause a variety of problems, including the menu bar (Clock, Spotlight) issues you noted.
2. If you did not install the Front Row Hack, an incompatible or corrupted Startup or Login Item may be partly to blame for the problems with the menu bar. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
3. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
4. Re: Safari and Mail, if not sorted by any of the above, see also:• "Safari: Blank icon after installing Security Update 2006-002 v1.0."
• My my "Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch" FAQ

Lightroom 3 super slow on new Windows 7 64 bit...Why?
I've recently switched over to Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium, running 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1GB ATI Radeon 4800 series video card, 1920px monitor and have found the performance in Lightroom 3.4.1 much slower than I did on Windows XP, 32 bit running 2GB of RAM with a 128MB motherboard card (laptop to boot).
Why is this happening? The main issues are extremely slow imports (minimal previews set as default when importing), very delayed thumbnail (preview) rendering (the grid view sometimes sits with half the thumbnails rendered, and half not rendered, then all of a sudden, a minute or two later, all will be rendered...), and slow, in-consistent 1:1 rendering. I've tried all the different combos when it comes to preview rendering but nothing does the trick. I've even tried switching my 10GB LR3 (ACR?) cache to different drives but nothing does the trick.
Could this be an issue with the Catalyst Control Center (software controling my video driver)? It's all I've got left to consider but would very much like a resolution.
Thanks in advance.Try the performance optimization tips here first:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/400/kb400808.html
Optimize your catalog(s), render 1:1 previews on import, and make sure your Cache folder isn't near the setting in LR preferences. If necessary, increase your Cache size and see if that helps.
If you regularly use Standby Mode to turn off your system, try shutting down Windows AND REMOVE AC POWER. If you have other connected devices (storage, camera, game, etc.) that use a separate power supply, disconnect them from AC power as well. Wait at least 10 seconds, then restore AC power to all devices, and reboot your system. This called a "cold boot," which will insure restoring ALL hardware devices, operating system, background applications and drivers to a known good state.
When I'm done for the day my OS is "Shut Down" and the main AC power strip turned off. It is the ultimate surge protection – NO CONNECTION. When I reboot the next morning I know all my system memory and other resources are freed up and available for my designated usage.
Following these guidelines I have absolutely no issues running LR 3.4.1 on my Windows 7 64 bit system. -

Why is Flash CS4 so terrible in Windows 7 64 Bit?
Hello,
Well, I still have yet to see any posts or answers to posts that address the following problems with Flash CS4 on Windows 7 64 Bit:
1. Flash takes half of forever to load.
2. Flash is slow.
3. Flash will not allow to Test Movies or Test Scenes. (This one is the most maddening and irritating.)
4. Will not publish files due to an incorrect parameter. (Notice it doesn't say WHICH one.)
Basic Specs:
Windows 7 64 Bit OS
8GB of RAM
Intel i5 750
I would really hate to have to revert to Windows XP just to use Flash CS4 reliably and I certainly am in no mood to purchase yet ANOTHER upgrade to CSx.
Windows 7 has been out for around a year. Certainly someone at Adobe can illuminate why this program functions so poorly in Windows 7.
Thank you.
MGLOh, and if by chance you, too, run Windows 64 Bit and Flash CS4, I would appreciate if you could share any thing you did to your system or installation to make it work better.
Please don't just say, "Well, it works for me, blah blah blah."
Thanks.
