Why a Apple RAID controller card cannot delete a RAID set?

Hi,
I just have a problem with my RAID set created with RAID Utility.  My configuration is as follows:
     Mac Pro (early 2009 model) 2 x 2.66GHx Quad-Core, 16GB DDR3 1066Mhz Memory
Apple RAID Card (HW Ver 2.00 and FW Ver E-1.3.20)
1 x 1TB HD (Apple original) in Bay 1 as boot disk configured as Enhanced JBOD
3 x 2TB HD (WD black series RE) in Bay 2 to Bay 4 configured as RAID 5
     Mac OS 10.7.4
The RAID Utility showed the following messages:
Degraded RAID set RS2 - No spare available for rebuild
Degraded RAID set RS2 - No spare available for rebuild
Degraded RAID set RS2
Drive 3:50014ee20352f5e8 missing - Previous drive status was inuse
Drive 3:50014ee20352f5e8 failure detected - Primary disk port unusable, previous drive status was inuse
Furthermore, RAID Utility shows:
1)  Bay 1 (RS1 boot drive):  Assigned, verified, Status good. viable (good)
2)  Bay 2 (RS2 RAID 5):  Assigned, verified, Status good, viable (degraded)
3)  Bay 3 (RS2 RAID 5):  Roaming, verified, Status good
4)  Bay 4 (RS2 RAID 5):  Assigned, verified, Status good, viable (degraded)
It also showed "Severe Events" message:  "Degraded RAID set RS2 - No spare available for rebuild."
I tried to delete the RAID set using Apple RAID Utility but nothing happened.  Can anyone help as I have to rebuild the RAID set from scratch?  Thanks.

I have swapped the drives in bays and it is always bay 2. I'm coming to the conclusion that either the RAID card is failing in bay 2 or there is a Lion / Mountain Lion issue with the RAID card.
I would say this is not "a Lion / Mountain Lion issue with the RAID card", as I have an "Early 2009 Mac Pro" that is running Snow Leopard (10.6.8), fully patched, that is exhibiting a similar issue, after about 4 years of no such problems.
My RAID configuration is just like yours: 4x 2TB drives, with Bays 1 & 2 as RAID 1 and Bays 3 & 4 also as RAID 1.  I keep losing either Bay 1 or Bay 2 disk, and after reboot typically see it as a good disk, in the green, but now unassigned to a RAID set, and marked as "Roaming".  When I assign it as a spare, so far the RS1 RAID Set begins to rebuild, and things are okay for a short while.
Initially this happened about once a month, starting about 3 months ago, now it is a weekly or several times weekly event.
I've put in new disks (several), restored from a Time Machine backup, and just came in today to find the Bay 2 disk "Roaming".....
I'm going to try a new Mac Pro RAID card, as I have a spare - just looking for information about whether the replacement RAID card will pick up the RAID sets from info cached on the disks (I hope!), or whether I have to newly create the RAID Sets & Volumes, and then re-populate from Time Machine / the old disks.
I will say that I've been running 8  "Early 2008 Mac Pro" computers with RAID cards, each configured as above, and 4 "Early 2009 Mac Pro" computers similarly configured. These were all deployed between late 2008 and the beginning of 2010.  I've had little difficulty with them, and they've been wonderful when an actual disk failure has occurred.  I've had about 6 actual disk failures among all these setups.
cheers!

  • Bad RAID Controller Card?

One of the arrays in my Xserve RAID had disappeared from the network and RAID admin software. All the disks that make up the array have green lights and appear in RAID admin. When the host PC reboots this array is no longer detected in the Apple Fibre Channel card BIOS. After having swapped cables around I reckon the RAID controller card has failed.
Is it safe to swap the top and bottom RAID controller cards to prove the diagnosis or does the controller hold information specific to the diskset it is connected to?

The diskset info is stored on the drives, so its perfectly fine to swap controllers.
On that note however, first of all make sure you really jam that controller board in there well... first time we swapped and it wasnt in there perfectly secure, 3 drives went red and the rest was history. Also, if your controller is acting up, definitly make sure things are backed up when swapping between sets... when we've had controller issues, its usually only been volumes going down on the computer's side, but I have heard of raid admin shooting back drive errors and turning things red as well.

  • Your apple ID (email address) cannot be used to set up imessage at this time

My iMessage recently stopped working. When I attempt to log back in it tells me "your apple ID (email address) cannot be used to set up imessage at this time" then gives me a code to share with Apple support. (See screen shot). Any suggestions?

There is no official public documentation of that error message as far as I know, but according to reports, it can mean (at least sometimes) that the same Apple ID is being used with the iTunes Store or one of the other Apple content stores, and the payment method is invalid. Sign in to the store and review your account. You do not, of course, have to provide any billing information to set up an account to use only with iMessage, as it's a free service.
Otherwise, do what the error message tells you to do.

You don't have to pay anything for it. The credit card will not be charged at all when you download Yosemite. The credit card is required to establish the account at the App Store, not to actually purchase Yosemite. You seem incapable of understanding the difference.

  • I need help getting the right PCIe Raid Controller card.

I have a Mac Pro 3.33 GHz (6 core) computer running 10.8.2. I purchased a Sans Digital TR4M+ http://www.sansdigital.com/towerraid-/tr4mplus.html which includes a Highpoint RR622 card but it's not bootable. I need a non-expensive card which is bootable. I'm currently using the drives in JBOD mode.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I'm currently using the drives in JBOD mode.
The RAID features built into Disk Utility support JBOD, Mirroring, and Striping without the use of a card.
RAID methods that require checksum calculation, (e.g., RAID 5) always require a card to provide adequate speed.
Consider whether you really NEED your Mac OS X Boot Volume to be on a RAID at all. A great deal of its data is either invariant (Mac OS X code and Applications code) or temporary ( caches). If damaged, Mac OS X and Applications can be rebuilt from DVDs in a few hours.
Moving the Users files off to another Volume is a great way to speed up your Mac Pro, since it reduces competition for the busy Boot Drive.

  • Cannot write to RAID

We have a Xserve RAID that we have been using for years with no problems. We put in a Promise RAID in December and have reoriented the XserveRAID for different uses. Since then we have had problems with the Apple RAID. After running for a few days it will not allow anyone to write to it. If you try to create a folder you get error -50. If you try to drag a file to you it you get a message that the file has an illegal file name.
When we changes the use of this RAID we made a number of configuration changes.
Original setup: Split into 4 slices and allocated to 3 Xserves with a Qlogic fibrechannel switch and LUN masking. Firmware 3.x.
Current setup: Connected to an Xserve Intel with a new Fibrechannel card (in the Xserve), no LUN slicing, the RAID is connected directly and no Fibrechannel switch involved. Firmware 1.5.
When I check the log I see a number of entries for this morning from 7:25:40 AM to 7:27:06 AM (as far as I know no was was accessing the network volume that is this RAID at the time). The entries show:
    RAID Controller 1 Fibre LIP
    RAID Controller 1 Fibre LIP
RAID Controller 1 Fibre Link Down
    RAID Controller 1 Fibre LIP
RAID Controller 1 Fibre Link Up
    RAID Controller 1 Fibre LIP
When I look at the uppder controller it shows link up, but I guess that the link was down for over a minute and this caused the problem.
My first thought is to upgrade the firmware to 1.5.1 since we no longer need LUN mapping. I am only using the left side of the RAID so should I consider swapping the upper and lower controller cards or taking a controller card from our parts kit?

    Hi macman1977;
The invalid sibling link error is a serious problem with the directory on that disk. The only way I know to fix this error without reformatting is DiskWarrior. Never having used RAID on my Mac, I don't know if DiskWarrior works with it. You might call Alsoft technical support and ask them for help on this problem.

  • Xserve 2006 RAID Controller

    Hi Everyone,
I have an Intel Xserve 2006. Recently the RAID controller card failed so I popped back in the regular SATA controller (that it originally came with) and ordered a new RAID controller.
I am pretty sure I have the correct one for the 2006 model but it does not seem to work. I have no battery on it (thought one would come with it) the original expanded and I am pretty sure broke the other RAID controller.
Any ideas why this new one is not working also? Is it the battery?
    Many thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi David,
Have you got the new RAID card in there now or the SATA backplane? I'm in London as well so will try and help you out as much as I can if you need it.

  • I cannot delete mail in Mavericks

    Hello Apple (eees).
I cannot delete any mail in Mavericks!
If for instance I select the trash folder, select all and click delete the items disappear.
If I then click on the inbox (or any other mail folder) then click back on trash all the deleted messages have returned from the grave (maybe something to do with Halloween).
In addition the 'all mail' folder tells me I have over 2000 messages, I have less than 100!
If I do a rebuild the progress meter tells me it is receiving several thousand emails, none of which ever arrive
I am using brand new latest top spec MacBook Pro, mail service is virginmedia imap.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards to all,
    Mark (UK)

iCloud email should automatically resume once you have sufficient storage again.  I haven't seen any documentation on whether or not there's a delay before service resume though.  If you want to get more information you would have to contact Apple support: http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/.

  • Howto use onboard Promise Raid Controller pdc20265 on 694D PRO AR Ver1

Currently I'm running Win2k on my MSI 694D Pro AR Ver 1.0 board with Bios version W6321VMS.310 and the included Fasttrack-Family Win2k Raid-Controller driver for my Promise Raid Controller pdc20265 with lite bios.
Due to software updates I'm now absolutely required to switch to Windows XP Prof. However this is the cause for my inquiry:
I downloaded and installed the latest available Bios version W6321VMS.370 from MSI site.
On installation of XP I tried to include the pdc20265 Fasttrack raid driver from MSI site to get access to my HD's. However WinXP couldn't find any HD's. Remark: XP with SP1 and VIA 4in1443v.exe installed.
So I repeated this procedure with the original drivers Fasttrack family and pdc202065 which were attached on floppy. Unfortunately no success as well.
Then I have put the HD on the Ultra66 channel and installed XP first without raid and ultra 100 support.
Later I re-enabled the on-board promise device in bios and unfortunately WinXP didn't recoginze the device by itself. So I provided the latest pdc20265 driver from MSI site. XP complained that the driver is not digitally signed. After reboot the promise device reported an error under WinXP.
I repeated this procedure with the original drivers Fasttrack family and pdc202065 which were attached on floppy. Unfortunately no success as well.
Why MSI-Site says this pdc20265 driver supports WinXP if there are only the Win2k and WinME,98... drivers included?
Currently I can't use the promise device at all under WinXP. This means even I don't have an Ultra 100 controler available.
Has anyone an idea how to install HD's on WinXP with the corresponding promise raid drivers for my pdc20265 onboard chipset?
    I'd really appreciate your help!

Some of the suggestions I don't understand quite well. Please could you explain further:
    > remove the other two drives leaving the raid pair
    > and cd only
    >
    > put raid 2nd in boot order
What do you mean with that?
    > reboot press the key you need to get in to raid bios
    > create the array and make it bootable
array is already created (Note: there is important data on it, can't recreate it! Only Segate 80GB is free and empty)
I don't want to boot from raid.
    >
    > now boot to cd to install, right at beginning it will say
    > press f6 to install mass storage drive you need the
    > driver on floppy to install it
I already tried the XP-Install routine to specify additional mass storage drivers. (Note: 1 single 80GB Drive was attached)  Which are the suitable ones? As mentioned I tried the following:
    1. Attached floppy 'Fasttrack family drivers'
Result: Message: Driver is for Win2k only. Not a single  Harddrive shows for installing XP.
    2. Attached Floppy (Promise Ultra 100 lite, 256 only)
Result: Driver is for Win2k only. Installation procedure hangs.
    3. Driver from MSI-Site for pdc20265. Same as 2.
    4. Extracting via4in1 drivers and putting WinXPIDE drivers on floppy:
Result: Installation routine doesn't recoginze drivers on floppy.

Which is the right driver for WinXP to specify for mass storage device at WinXP installation?

    Thanks for your help.
It sounds like you are booting from the promise RAID controller.  If so, you are well familiar with the way in which it dominates the bootup process for the first 30 seconds or so.........(dots look familiar?...)
I wonder if the second RAID card is also initiating its bios sequence at the same time underneath the Promise boot screen (underneath, so to speak) so that when the Promise routine is finished, so is the CMD routine, and you proceed from that point with both RAID controllers initialized (but can only see one of them at a time from the bios screen.)
Do you you have "boot from other device" enabled in the bios?  If so you might try disabling that to see if it will sequence the RAID controllers initialization so that the CMD bios appears after the Promise bios is done (I assume you have the onboard Promise array selected as the boot device.)
A bit more trouble would be to reboot to main bios,  disable the onboard RAID controller in the bios, save and reboot.  At this point the Promise bios will not display and you should see a CMD bios display which you could manipulate--then reenable the Promise controller to boot, etc.  If you disable the Promise controller and you still don't see a bios for the CMD RAID device you need to look elsewhere.  Also, it might be that the CMD bios access requires a certain key sequence pressed during post to display?....Just some random thoughts...

  • Moving from VIA RAID controller to another RAID controller?!?

    Hello
I'm going to install a RAID-1 with 2 SATA harddisks from seagate using the onboard VT8237 RAID controller of my KT6 Delta.
I guess there should be no problems and that the temperature on the motherboard will be fine.
However, what will happen if I want to move later on to a new motherboard with another raid controller or install a dedicated RAID controller?!?
Will I loose all my data?  Or will the new raid controller duplicate the data based on the source drive?
    Thanks
    JohnQM

I have read somewhere that the following migration paths apply for raid:
    1. raid-1 can always be migrated to a new RAID controller, no matter which brand, because raid-1 is just a mirror and no important information is written in the partition table
    2. raid-0 or other raid-levels
2.0 from one brand of RAID controller to the same version of the RAID controller of the same brand: no problem
2.1 from one brand of RAID controller to a new version of the RAID controller of the same brand: usually no problem (upwards compatible)
2.1 from one brand of RAID controller to a RAID controller of another brand: no go
    Can someone confirm this please?
    Thanks

  • Intel raid controller ROM in MSI 875 updated yet?

Intel recently enabled the raid 1 option for the raid controller in their ICH5R chipset.
On the Intel website under the "Important information on Intel RAID Option ROM version" section Intel write the following:
    Quote
In order to fully utilize the new features included in version 3.5 of the Intel® Application Accelerator RAID Edition, Intel recommends that you first upgrade your system BIOS to one that includes version 3.5 of the Intel RAID Option ROM. You can obtain this system BIOS from your motherboard or system manufacturer.
The latest bios for my 875P Neo-FIS2R MS-6758 was released 2003-6-26 so I find it hard to believe that the 3.5 raid ROM is included since the software was (officially) released on 7-7-2003.
Furthermore I still have no raid 1 option when configuring my intel raid controller - only performance arrays can be set up.
When will MSI release a new bios with the latest Intel raid controller ROM?
    Best regards
    Andreas

I also humbly await the arrival of the (875P)6758 1.7 Bios update to enable RAID1......Any ideas on when we might get it?...any one?........eeerrrr...how about an ftp site address for a beta bios? anyone?..speak up I can't hear you back there........

  • K7T266 Pro2 RU - RAID controller as standard IDE port?

    Hello,
I have an old MSI K7T266 Pro2 RU board, which includes a RAID controller.
Currently it is set up with a stripe RAID array comprising of 2 X 40 GB hard
discs as a single 80 GB array. I wish to replace this with a single 200 GB
drive, and am wondering can the RAID controller on the board be used in this
fashion - as a standard IDE controller, suitable for running a single IDE
hard disc? Or would I need to use some unofficial BIOS on the RAID
controller to convert it to a pair of standard normal IDE controllers? Currently
the RAID array is nearly full with files, and thus I want to know for sure
this will work before backing up the data, erasing the RAID array, and buying a single new 200 GB drive.
    Thank you,
    Simon Howson

    Hi,
I don't want to run a stripe aray, I just want to replace one of the 40 GB drives for a 200 GB drive, and then just have 2 individual IDE drives on the RAID controller oprating as 2 seperate hard discs. Will this work?
It has been ages since I set up the RAID array, and can't remember if it is possible to just format and have them running as single drives, or if the RAID controller can only run in RAID modes such as stripe, or mirror, or mirror + stripe etc.
