Why after running the Airport Extreme 802.11n cd, still show 802.11 a/b/g??

Hi,
I had install the 802.11n from the CD of Airport Extreme package, but still under the "Network Utitlity", I can't see the "n"?
Anyone can help to advise?

I have a Core duo 2 MBP...
Not clear from the description of your processor.
If you have a "Core Duo" processor, it is not capable of 'n'.
If you have a "Core 2 Duo" processor, it is capable of 'n'.
I've updated to AirPortExtremeUpdate2007003 - how do i know if i'm using n capability?
To check to see if your Mac has 'n' capability (after neabler installed):
Open Network Utility (found in the Applications > Utilities folder)
Under the Info Tab, choose Network Interface (en1)
In the section "Model: Wireless Network Adapter," if it says (802.11a/b/g/n), you already have the 802.11n enabler installed. If it says (802.11a/b/g), you do not have the 802.11n enabler installed.

I bought the Airport Extreme 802.11n Wifi from the Apple store in West Edmonton Mall Canada got to the airport, customs scanned the box (which was unopened) and they got a dangerous chemicals hit on the unit. No need to say what else happened there after, i was skinned inside out, body search, drill with the 21 questions and on top that they want to know if i have any ties with any terrorist organizations.
Why would this device give off such a reading?

    It doesn't.
The box may have been handled by someone with unclean hands. Or, their security equipment may have been miscalibrated. Or, they're just incompetent. Don't you feel safe?

  • Speed issue with the AirPort Extreme (802.11n)

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help out with this.
I am the Design Manager and IT Director at a publishing company where we have just upgraded to an AirPort Extreme (802.11n) base station to drive our network. We went this route as all of our machines are Mac Minis with built-in Airport and we were in a situation where re-doing a hardwire on the building was not going to be a possibility due to budget costs.
Our new configuration seems to be running very well and has the following devices connected to the AirPort Extreme:
Linksys Firewall Router (which was used on our old system and was requested by corporate to stay in the lineup to keep the static IP addresses we've already defined for our printers, VPN, etc. intact). The configuration on this part is modem to Linksys router to uplink port on the Airport).
New Panther, Intel based Xserve connected to the Airport's Ethernet port 1.
A 4 port ethernet switch connected to the Airport's Ethernet port 2 which drives four of our HP LaserJet printers.
Ethernet port 3 is not occupied.
All of the ethernet cords connecting our equipment are brand new.
For the most part, everything's been running blazing fast with a remarkable speed increase over our old hardwired setup. However, I've received a few complaints about slow speeds when dragging and dropping and working with files that are stored on our Xserve - we get alot of the "spinning wheel" and the transmission speeds seem very slow.
At present, we have several category 6 ethernet cords on backorder. I was planning on using one to take advantage of the gigabit ethernet capabilities between the Airport and the Xserve (as these are the only two elements of the network that support gigabit ethernet, besides the majority of our Mac Minis. Printers and cable modem are only 10-100 capable, so those will stand as is).
Can anyone tell me if the gigabit ethernet cord will be the solution to this one slow aspect of the new network? Any other settings I could apply to possibly speed up the transmission time when moving files to and from our server? Good news is that every workstation in the house is getting a full 4 bars.
    Many thanks!

PS, just wanted to point out that we are also running in bridge mode.
    Thanks!

i have an imac g4 purchased Dec 2003 runnung OS 10.5.8.  It runs fine with airport off, but when I turn airport on it freezes with the black page,  "restart by holding power key . . ."  I swapped the airport extreme card with the one in my ibook G4 (purchased same date and running same OS).  No change in operation.
I am running wifi from verizon.  Recently changed from mifi2200 to jetpak 4620 in a 3G location.  Ibook running fine, desktop freezes.  If I can boot desktop in safe mode and get airport turned off in time. then I can reboot regularly and imac runs flawlessly with no wireless.Have run disk utilities and TechTool Pro rebuild etc, but nothing has worked.  How do I fine the culprit?

the power logix thing was really sad. apple changed so much after 10.4.8 that there wasn't a viable way to patch the software.
That statement is precisely why I don't believe in blindly updating the OS, especially in a non-standard machine.
We can't expect third parties to support us forever, and it is shameful to break something that works fine, except that we updated the OS....
I think that any upgrade or modification to a machine or the OS greatly increases the risk of trouble or incompatibility with current configuration and "new" system files.
After all, the component or software could only be tested as far as the current OS version when the component or software was released.
Beyond that, we are all "beta testing".
Following a beta tester protocol, and applying updates to a cloned system drive first, is a prudent way to approach updates, and not only for older, heavily modified machines.
After 10.4.8 and moreso with Leopard, the focus is primarily on Intel architecture, not PPC architecture.
Like it or not, we are all updating to the abyss of the extinction of our machines, unless we can be satisfied with the last stable version of OS that works well with our hardware and software.
I wish they would include the latest pkgs at least with software update.
Yes, having individual packages, rather than lump "OS X 10.x.x" updates would be nice.
This way, one could update as one sees fit. That is to say, for example, fix the Quicktime, but leave my Network alone, etc., etc.
In all fairness, Apple does provide for some breakdown of updates, but I believe there is much room for improvement, especially, as you point out, with regard to the core services portion of the OS.
Until then, I'll leave Software Update disabled.......

After a recent iTunes update attempt iTunes no longer functions and the airport extreme base station is not accessable on our computer.  We still have wifi but cannot access the base station software.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the response. I tried that approach this evening and it didn't work for me. (Technically it worked for me, when I was hardwired into my base station, but would not work for me wirelessly, which is my main issue.)
Again, using the approach you recommended works only if I have my ethernet cable attached to the LAN port so my computer is communicating directly to the base station through the hard wire. I am able to scan for my base station and make setting adjustments normally this way too.
As soon as I disconnect from the LAN port and try to go wireless is where I run into problems. The Base Station's wireless network I created is available to choose in the top right corner of the monitor with all of the other available wireless devices/networks -- but the network I created does not have access to the internet. I am also unable to configure my Base Station wirelessly. When my Airport Utility tries to scan for the Base Station and Network, it cannot find any Apple Wireless Device. It's like the Wireless Network in my base station is not sending out a signal.
Is there a way to resolve this issue?

  • I have the airport extreme 802.11ac and I managed to get it working with verizon fios but the upload speed is slow

The 802.11ac router has a fast download speed, but the upload speed is half what it used to be. Am I doing something wrong?
I have the router in brigde mode and I have the fios actiontec Rev I router. I am love the router because it is consistent around my house.

Here is what helped for me. My comcast service stopped connecting. I started by shutting down the modem (sb6121) and the airport extreme ac, taking note of the DNS setting, then after a few minutes connecting.
I had to do it several times, and then, for some reason, the DNS settings changed, and things have been great ever since (knock on wood). I am not one of the experts on the innards of things around here, but my DNS settings got reset automatically, and the problem went away.
If it were to happen again, I would repeat the process, and if it persisted, I would change the DNS settings (network-advanced-dns). I could give you the settings that work for me, but I suspect they are really for those in Oregon. Check out your dns settings, write them down, and do a web search for appropriate dns for you.
Sorry, I don't understand this part of the tech world, but this is what worked for me.

  • HT4600 i Get a solid amber light sometimes, bUT all works fine. I have to unplug the airport extreme to reset it and then it turns green and starys that way for a week or so and then turns back to amber. why is this and how do i fix it ?

I gat a solid amber light once a week on my airport extreme, but all works fine. I have to unplug it to reset it and then the light turns back to green and it is good for another week and then it happens again. why is this and what can i do to fix it ?

Solid amber on an AirPort Extreme is an indication that the internal power supply is starting to act up.
If the AirPort Extreme is in warranty, it shouid be exchanged for another AirPort Extreme.
If the AirPort Extreme is several years old, keep any eye on things. When/if you find that you are having to reset the device several times a week, it's time to start thinking about a replacement device, as the end is near.

  • Why does the usb printer go offline through the airport extreme?

My hp 2500n printer is listed as not connected. I have it hooked up to myAirport Extreme via usb. If I disconnect and reconnect the usb, it sees it and all is well as long as the printer is never turned off. If the printer power is cycled, the usb connection is lost and the only way I have found to reestablish the connection is by manually disconnecting and reconnecting the usb cable. There are no intervening devices between the printer and the usb connection on the Airport Extreme
    Any ideas out there?

I had the exact same problem
It turns out I was using a 20 foot USB cable between the printer and the Airport Extreme and the signal had become to weak to work. Try using nothing more than a 6 foot cable or try a new cable

  • Why would i connect a external hardrive to the airport extreme and what is the difference between LAN and WAN gigabit ethernet?

Hey just wanted to know what is the reason i would connect my external hardrive to the extreme and what is the difference between LAN and WAN ehternet. I know one is local and other is wide but can someone explain in simpler terms.

Connecting a hard drive to the Airport Extreme makes it available to be shared across all the computers on your network.
WAN (Wide Area Network) is your connection to the internet
LAN (Local Area Network) is your internal (or local) ethernet connections (computers, printers, etc...)

  • Speed on the Airport Extreme

Hi I have a Macbook running Leopard. Everything runs well. Ever since I bought the Airport extreme WIFI N router my connection speed to the connected external hard drive is rather slow.....
    Here is what i do....
I have a 250gig Mybook connected to the Airport extreme. On the airport utility settings, if I set it to only N wifi the speed is very slow. So i have to keep it on the multiple settings (b/g/n). According to my Macbook, when I have the multiple settings the speed is 130 mbs but if it's on only n then it's 300mbs.
So my question is, why is the connection faster when it's on multiple settings then when it's on just N?
is there a fix for this?

Leopard Ron, Welcome to the discussion area!
According to my Macbook, when I have the multiple settings the speed is 130 mbs but if it's on only n then it's 300mbs.
So my question is, why is the connection faster when it's on multiple settings then when it's on just N?
I'm confused by your question. Your first statement says that it is faster (300 Mbps) in 802.11n only. Your question seems to indicate the opposite.

  • Does firmware update 7.1 break the Airport Extreme Base Station?

Does firmware update 7.1 break the Airport Extreme Base Station?
    See Digg

    April 10, 2007
Do NOT install AirPort 802.11n Firmware 7.1
This Firmware 7.1 update for AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n should definitely NOT be installed.
    Here was my problem:
I used AirPort Utility 5.1 to install the update. It is automatic - launch the utility and it asks if you want to install the update. I said yes because I had problems getting two AirPort n base stations networking together to extend my range (I gave up finally and just used an AirPort Express to extend the range).
After the firmware update, some sites would not load at all (www.nytimes.com) and others took forever to load. And worse, I could not send any email from any of my IMAP accounts. It seemed to be a DNS problem.
I have two 802.11n AirPorts, so I finally went back to the other one (7.0) and everything worked fine. The Apple tech support guy offered to replace my broken (7.1) AirPort.
Foolishly, I wanted to make sure the problem was actually with the 7.1 update and not the AirPort itself. So I updated my second 802.11n base station with 7.1. And it casued the exact same problem (some sites not loading, no outgoing email).
The Apple tech (at this point I was speaking with a wireless specialist) put me on hold to test a few of his AirPorts to see if he could revert back to firmware 7.0 or (ii) install a clean version of 7.1 (in case the version on my drive was corrupted).
Unfotunately neither option was possible, which is a design flaw in AirPort Utility.
Apple is sending me two new AirPorts in 1-2 days, which is great service, but I will not be installing firmware update 7.1 again. Fool me once...

    AirPort Extreme Base Station

Turns out that the firmware 7.1 does not render the AEBS useless.
My problem was resolved when I turned off my DSL modem, the AEBS and the computer. Then restarted in same order going to the next one after the first is compeletly up and running. I had no problems whatsoever after that.
Seems that the firmware update makes the IPs 'stick' somehow. I would think that even a reset of AEBS might have done it but I never got to that stage.
All my computers came alive in no time.
I suggest Smith tries this. Simply reset the whole network. Ah yes, my cable modem has an internal battery, I needed to disconnect this too. Only then did the modem go into the 'acquiring' or 'distribution' mode.

  • Can the AirPort Extreme work as an extender?

Simple question: Can the AirPort Extreme work as a wireless network extender? (I have tried to research this online, of course, but I haven't had much luck.)
Background: The only option from our ISP is a router/modem combination. It used to be plugged directly into my dad's (Dell and Windows) desktop computer, but I was having trouble connecting all my devices wirelessly. So, I moved it into the kitchen and plugged it into the phone line (we have AT&T DSL) and got a USB wireless adapter for my dad's computer (because he didn't think he needed the wireless option on his "fancy" new Dell). I also have a different brand of adapter plugged into my old iMac G3, which I LOVE using.
Since doing this, my dad has constantly complained of his Internet not working correctly, things loading slowly, and having trouble connecting at all. (Full disclosure: he STILL uses the complete desktop version of AOL and refuses to give it up.) However, I've had no trouble on ANY of my devices--the G3, my white MacBook, my iPad, my iPod, or my mom's Kindle Fire. This leads me to believe the problem lies in the fact that he's using AOL because I usually don't have trouble when I briefly use Chrome on his desktop.
I've tried finding different solutions, including flashing an old router to use an extender and researching different extenders and bridges and such, but nothing looks like a viable solution because of all our components.
I'm wondering if the AirPort Extreme (probably the A1143;or any of the other AirPort devices) can work as an extender. To appease my dad, it'd be best to take the modem/router back to his man cave so he can hook it back up to his computer, but I'm not sure if the AirPort can pick up the wireless signal and perhaps be plugged directly into my G3 and otherwise act as an extender for my other devices (while searching for an Internet solution for my G3, I read on here that someone did this, but there was no further information on how it worked) or if I can plug it into the kitchen phone line and keep the USB adapter for the G3 and have wireless access to all my other things.
    Help?
(I can't find the original support article where a responder mentioned using the AirPort station with an iMac G3, but i did locate this one: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13080786#13080786)
(My iMac is one of the later ones. It's running 10.4.1 and is a 600MHz model.)

Simple question: Can the AirPort Extreme work as a wireless network extender?
Simple answer: Yes....IF....the AirPort Extreme is extending a wireless network that is being provided by another Apple 802.11n wireless router.
Another way of saying the same thing is that it will take a minimum of two Apple 802.11n wireless routers to extend a signal wirelessly.
The more complex answer involves distances and obstructions involved in the setup, or alternate solutions such as running Ethernet cabling or using Ethernet powerline adapters.

  • How do I install Enabler from the Airport Extreme disk?

Recently I purchased an new Airport Extreme. One of my 3 computers is a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo iMac with 20 inch display (iMac4,1). It is running 802.11g. I wish to enable it for 802.11n. I am confused by a statement about the enabler, which is found at the following link for the AirPort Extreme 802.11n* Enabler for Mac (http://store.apple.com/us/product/D4141ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA&mco=MTA4MjgwNzI). The statement is, "Important note: The Enabler is included free with the new AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n. If you purchase a new AirPort Extreme Base Station, you do not need to purchase the Enabler separately." On my iMac, the Network Utility indicates the iMac is not enabled for 802.11n. I have kept the software on the iMac up to date. Thus I assume that somewhere on the disk that came with the Airport Extreme, there is an enabler file I need to access. Where do I find this, and how do I enable the iMac for 802.11n? Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Wilson

I am still a bit confused, because the information at the link I gave seems to indicate that a person with my model of computer should be able to use the AirPort Extreme 802.11n* Enabler for Mac.
    1. My computer is not a 17 inch 1.83 GHZ. It is a 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo iMac with a 20 inch display (measured diagonally).
    2. The web page (http://store.apple.com/us/product/D4141ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA&mco=MTA4MjgwNzI) says check "Before purchasing the 802.11n Enabler software, please check to make sure that your Mac does not already have the 802.11n enabler already installed."
    3. It then shows how to use the Network Utility to see whether or not the enabler is installed ("If the section "Model: Wireless Network Adapter," if it says (802.11a/b/g/n), you already have the 802.11n enabler installed. If it says (802.11a/b/g), you do not have the 802.11n enabler installed." My computer lists "802.11a/b/g".
    3. Thus I assume that all now I need to do is to install the enabler, which one then can purchase, which one then can do through the Apple Store web page.
    4. My issue is that the same web page says I do not need to purchase the enabler if I have already purchased the Airport Extreme base station. ("Important note: The Enabler is included free with the new AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n. If you purchase a new AirPort Extreme Base Station, you do not need to purchase the Enabler separately.")
    What have I missed?

  • Can an encrypted USB drive be used with the Airport Extreme?

I would like to keep an encrypted USB drive hooked up to my Airport Extreme (A1354) so that I can use it for a hand archive of documents I might need to reference on the road or conveniently within my home, mainly because it would be handier than having to plug and unplug a USB device into whatever computer I'm using, and would allow my wife to do the same with her computer. I know most internet providers provide a service like this, but I figured why not just do this with my Airport Extreme?
I've read posts from people who have taken encrypted USB volumes generated from their MacBook Pro, and plug that USB device into the Airport Extreme. The Airport recognized the device exists, but it is you can't actually use it as an encrypted volume. This seems like a flaw on the part of Apple if you can't do this, as this device is a much more expensive solution that what most wireless routers provide.
Has anybody figured this one out?

    Doubtful it's going to work.
Does it see the same disk if it's formatted just Journaled (ie, not encrypted)?
The tehnical article isn't entirely clear . . . it just says Mac OS Extended:  AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule: USB storage device supported formats and protocols
It was last modified June 14, 2011, a couple of weeks before Lion was released with the ability to encrypt drives.
Note that ExFAT is supported on Macs effective with 10.6.5, but not Airport Extremes; there's no reason to think encryption is any different.
