I have just bought a new macbook and trying to add all my music to my new itunes from a previous version of itunes (iTunes 9) in my seven year old Mac. I can import all the MP3 songs but iTunes ignores all the m4a format files. What to do? I have copied them into the music file along with the mp3 files but they still dont open in iTunes.

    From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

  • Deleted all the 2217 songs from itunes...

I, ofcourse, HAD to play with the music folder in my finder, and had to ACCIDENTLY delete all the songs.
So, i go into itunes and, as ever, hit 'play'...
    when, SUDDENLY..
Thank you thank you, no need for comments
itunes can' locate any of my songs. pathetic.
it happened few minutes ago, btw.
i never stood this calm after such a enourmous collapse..
However, i got them all BACKUPED on my ipod!!! THNX god such a thing was invented!!
But, what i thought that would be the smallest problemo, now is smth i can't figure out.
HOW to switch off the automatical update of my ipod, when i can't change any of my ipod settings if ipod isn't connected to the comp. and if i connect it, ipod will, ofcourse delete all the songs cause its on automaticly updating..
i was able to do that once..

    Hello,
You can't directly sync or drag music from your iPod to iTunes library.
If your iTunes is set for "Automatic" in "Preferences -> iPod" (the default setting), connecting your iPod to iTunes now would automatically delete all the content off your iPod. This action cannot be reversed.
Instead, connect your iPod to your computer. Get ready, and as soon as the iPod displays "do Not Disconnect" on the screen, begin to press and hold the Option and Command keys for 20-30 seconds, as iTunes loads up. This will prevent any auto-syncing from clearing the songs off your iPod.
    Now, onto the transferring.
You can have a third-party program do this copying for you; see a selection of them here:

  • TS1470 Downloaded songs stop mid-song in iTunes music library and on iPod.

I received the 'secure network connection could not be established' error message several times during a recent audio download.  I was able to eventually complete all of the downloads by going to the 'available downloads' area.  However, when I played back the downloaded songs, several of them ended mid-song although the complete songs appear to have successfully downloaded judging by the 'Time' (minutes) count for each song.  (Interestingly enough, the majority of the songs that stopped mid-song during playback were marked as having high popularity in the iTunes store.)
I've had this issue with previous downloads too.  I've been charged for and have paid for these songs, but didn't receive the full product in some cases.  It's very frustrating that I'm not able to enjoy these songs in their entirety.
Have other folks had this issue?  What is the resolution?

Something may have gone wrong with the index of the Music playlist. Download the current iTunes Free Single of the Week. I know it sounds odd, but it should fix the problem.
If that doesn't work close iTunes and delete the hidden file sentinel from inside the main iTunes folder, then start iTunes again. It should run a consistency check when it starts up.

  • About the Beatles Songs on iTunes Music Store..

Was wondering, and perhaps the old codgers here who like me, actually have the original vinyl (boy, did I just date myself!) and prefer those.. umm.. was wondering about the releases currently offered - what versions?
Are they the remasters, or the original mixes? I recall some years back hearing some remastered tracks from the White Album that made my hair curl.. Brrrr!
What, exactly, are the offerings in this catalogue? Can't seem to find much info about it, unless there's someplace I've missed looking.
    Deb.

Your not alone - I have 4 or 5 Beatle's albums on vinyl (Bought them when they originally came out.) Anyway, I read somewhere (Maybe Macworld?) that all of the individual albums etc. are the remastered versions. However, I think the box set includes the original mixes.

  • Can I add the iTunes Music Library (old) to iTunes Music Library?

Hi, I'm asking this question on behalf of a friend and I don't want to give her incorrect advice ... She has an Intel G5 iMac running 10.5.8 and iTunes 9.0 (she has downloaded but not installed the iTUnes 9.1 update).
Her problem is that she has deleted certain songs from her 'Jane Doe's iPod Playlist' so that she didn't have those songs on her iPod - I don't know the method she used to do this, nor does she. However, it has resulted in those songs now not showing up in the iTunes music library on her computer. There's just an exclamation mark and a dialog box asking if she would like to locate the songs.
She asked me to help her out and I discovered that all these songs (there are dozens- more than a hundred - of them) are still on her computer in a folder called 'iTunes Music old' - this is a sub-folder of the iTUnes Music folder where the path is Music - iTunes - iTunes Music.
    My question is this -
Is it possible to select all the albums in this 'iTUnes Music old' folder and simply drag and drop it onto the iTunes Music folder (after making sure that the location I'm dragging and dropping to corresponds to the location for her library as specified on the advanced tab of preferences) so that the songs will be back in the default library?
It seems to me that it should work but I don't want to be responsible for the person who loses all her music for her if it doesn't.
I would really appreciate someone who knows their way around iTUnes telling me the best way to sort her music and whether or not she should install the 9.1 update before or after reorganising the library.
    Cheers
    Tricia

If you're seeing the , that's generally an indication that media files (the mp3 or m4a, etc., files) were moved using Finder. They were moved or removed and the iTunes library wasn't able to keep track of where they went. If this is an old machine that she's messed around with, it can be a bit of a crap shoot trying to figure out where the stuff should go (iTunes is quite unhelpful in telling you where the music for the broken links was expected to be ... you can take some guesses, but iTunes 9 and iTunes 8 use different folder structures, so getting the stuff in the right place can be a nuisance).
Surprisingly complicated question. If you were confident of where the music files should go, you could try moving them (safer, copy them) to your current iTunes media folder and if you drop them in the exact same spot they were before, your broken links problem will be solved. It's a long shot, though.
There are apps out there for rebuilding libraries, but if you don't have extensive playlists that would take forever to rebuild (or you don't have lots of ratings or things like that which you are trying to preserve), I'd personally be inclined to rebuild her library from scratch by:
Create a new library by pressing and holding down the option button while you start iTunes, keep holding the button down until it prompts you to create a new library.
Go into the "Advanced" section of the "Preferences" screen and tell iTunes to (a) keep your folder organized and (b) to copy music to the new media folder.
Use the "Add Folder to Library" command on the "File" menu to add the music to your iTunes Library. This will copy the music to the new folder you specified in the previous step. Repeat this for her old iTunes folders (sounds like she might have it in different areas). Nice thing is, you can select some common parent folder (e.g. your parent "music" folder) and you'll only have to do this once.
Once iTunes is done copying music to the new media folder and has rebuilt the new library, you can clean up the old music media files that it sounds like are scattered about on her machine.
Again, I personally lean towards just rebuilding the iTunes library, allowing iTunes to organize the files like it wants, and then rebuild your playlists. But, if you'd rather try to repair her old library in situ, then you'll want to check out some of the apps designed for repairing broken links in libraries. Let us know if you want to do that and we can point you to some apps that might be able to help.
It seems to me that it should work but I don't want to be responsible for the person who loses all her music for her if it doesn't.
It's kind of hard to lose the music unless you do something nuts like drag stuff to the trash without making sure you've got a copy/backup somewhere. In fact, go ahead and have her back up her machine before you start. And when you're all done, and you've confirmed that everything is great, do another backup.
I would really appreciate someone who knows their way around iTUnes telling me the best way to sort her music and whether or not she should install the 9.1 update before or after reorganising the library.
Unless her version of iTunes is archaic (v7 or earlier), I'd suggest fixing her library first, and then doing the upgrade. Let's not add variables to the situation. Also, I don't know what the iTunes upgrade process would do with the broken links in her existing library.
Frankly, there are enough bugs/problems with 9.1, you might want to wait until 9.1.1 comes out anyway. I personally regret doing the 9.1 upgrade. It works, but I'm working around various bugs. And some people are having very serious problems. If you absolutely need 9.1 (e.g., iPad), you can do it and you'll probably be fine. But unless you need 9.1 for some reason, I'd wait for 9.1.1 release.

  • The iPod is linked to another iTunes music library

My daughter just purchased an iTunes Shuffle with her birthday money. We imported several CDs into the iTunes Library and successfully loaded the iPod Shuffle with about 120 songs. We then turned off the computer. The next time we attached the iPod Shuffle to the USB port, iTunes opened up and gave the following message:
The iPod is linked to another iTunes music library. Do you want to change the link to this iTunes music library and replace all existing songs on this iPod with those from this library?
Wow, that's a confusing question. I answered "no" to it initially, and the message went away, leaving my library empty. I disconnected the iPod Shuffle and then reconnected it and got the same question. This time I answered "yes" and our library is still empty. I can see all the CDs we imported in the iTunes folder and the individual songs are there as well. But for some reason, the library is not displaying them. iTunes also doesn't show the icon for the iPod when it's connected. Any ideas on how to fix this situation?

We are using this iPod on only 1 PC with 1 user with WinXP. I have been able to "file/add folder to library" to retrieve my daughter's songs. I also 'restored' the iPod to factory settings and updated it with the latest software and I did the same for the iTunes software. Everything is updated now. When I click on the button to "autofill" her iPod, I can get a few of the 118 songs in our library to download, but then I get an error messages that states, "Attempting to copy to the disk failed. An unknown error occurred. (-69)" Any ideas on what's happening here? Another I noticed that's strange is when I try to autofill the iPod, my 3.5" floppy light starts blinking. Perhaps this iPod software thinks the floppy is the iPod???

  • Finding a song on iTunes Music Store

Hi, I want to find a song on iTunes Music Library, but I can't seem to find it. I looked up every album by this artist and it doesn't seem to be there. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

where else can i go to get the music i want to download?
It depends on the artist and the song. In some cases, a particular track just isn't available for download anywhere. Try the other legal download stores, or check the artist's web site (if one exists).

  • My ipod is linked to another itunes music library?????

I recieved this notice last time I logged into my iTunes. "The iPod is linked to another iTunes music library. Do you want to change the link to this iTunes music library and replace all existing songs on this iPod with those form this library?
The thing is that I'm still using the same computer and never used another one to try to load any songs onto my iPod Shuffle. The Shuffle still has approximately 55 songs on it and I can't find them in my iTunes library. Anyone have any ideas as to how to put them from my iPod to my iTunes? Or how to find them on my computer to reload to my iTunes library?
    Thanks for any assistance,

A couple different possiblities can lead to this...
iPod's not only "attach" to a single computer, but also a single user account on that computer. Are you using the same Windows user account?
If you are, then possibly the iTunes Music Library file was trashed from "My Documents\My Music\iTunes". The "iTunes Music Library" files found in this folder must stay here and must not be altered (except by iTunes, of course).

  • ITunes Music Library vs. iTunes Library

What is the difference (datawise) between "iTunes Music Library" and "iTunes Library?"
To add music files to the library while in my C drive, do I click and drag the files into where?? ...the "iTunes folder" or another folder? I can't add them to the .itl or.xml files, so how do I add them??

*to add music files to the library while in my C drive, do I click and drag the files into where??*
You open iTunes and drag the songs to the Source list (the long pane on the left hand side). Alternatively in iTunes go to File>Add file to library or File>Add folder to library and navigate to the file or folder of files that you want to add.
The iTunes Library file is the database that holds all of your library information, song titles, artists, playlists, playcounts etc. The iTunes Music Library is an XML file iTunes uses to communicate library information with other programs. You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?

  • ITunes Music Library: View (at top right on version 7)

When selecting the third view in iTunes Music Library (to display album covers flip; such as in a juke box) this message is displayed. "iTunes is unable to browse album covers on this computer." Now, what I can't figure out is why ... because I had previously been able to see this feature before. Any thoughts out there would be greatly appreciated.

Have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base and let us know if it solves your problem.

  • I have an iPhone 5s and in my iTunes music library have the songs checked that I want downloaded onto my phone. Instead of doing this, it is syncing all songs whether they are checked or not even tho I have the "sync only checked songs" box checked.

I have an iPhone 5s and in my iTunes music library have the songs checked that I want downloaded onto my phone. Instead of doing this, it is syncing all songs whether they are checked or not even tho I have the "sync only checked songs" box checked. So basically it's syncing all of the songs when I just want the checked ones on. This is very frustrating.

When your device is connected, check the tabs at the top ("Summary" "Apps" "Music," etc. Under the Music one, check to see if "Sync Music>entire music library" is checked. If it is, that may be why all the songs are syncing.
