Why am I always running out of memory? Not adding anything to the drive, just leaving it on

I'm not loading any photo's/music/movies etc. just reading email and internet use. I start with about 2MB and it will slowly run down until I get a prompt telling me that I'm running critically low on memory? Any thoughts on how to clear this issue up? Or how to make a lot more space on the drive?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the DiskInventory idea, I have a file called private which I don't know what it does? It has a lot of stuff in it , tons of files ending in U501.asl or just asl
I don't know if I should be trashing these files, there is over 50 GB of these. I can't seem to attach a jpeg of the screen

I guess that means back to the shop.  Ridiculous to sell a phone that can't handle the new iOS more efficiently (or vice versa).  I can't imagine anyone going near a 5C now (I have a feeling mine had already been used and taken back once and sold as new at O2).

  • Why am I always running out of RAM?

For a pair of weeks now I have been doing all I am capable to understand the problem I have been experiencing. The language and terminology if my issue is somewhat foreign to me, but here is my best explanation.
On my Mac Pro 8-core 2.8 GHz tower with 8 GB of RAM I am finding myself running very few operations but end up in a situation where I can visibly see my performance bogging down as if I am out of RAM.
So I have been running activity monitor and what I am seeing is 40 MB of "Free" RAM with 630 MB "Wired", 2.5 GB "Inactive" and about 5 GB of "Active".
I understand some of the basics of what these terms mean. Here is one thing I am 100% certain: after a reboot I start with a massive majority of "Free" or "Green Colored Pie Section" of RAM and when this is happening, my performance is fantastic. Whenever I have a few GB's of RAM, I never complain about my performance.
Here is something I am almost 100% certain of: when my performance is poor or lacking, I notice two things that I find alarming: 1) I have under 100MB of "Free" RAM and 2) 50-60% of the RAM pie is colored yellow indicating "Active".
I am using very common applications and even when I quit all of my applications (except activity monitor) the active RAM is still dominating my 'pie'.
That's the best I can do for now, any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Both "Free" and "Inactive" are (supposed to be) available for use by any process that wants it.
When you first start up, most memory is, of course, "Free." As apps or system processes need memory, that's where OSX gets it. When they release it, however, it does not go back to Free, but to "Inactive" and is identified with the last process that used it. This is done to speed up assigning it back to the previous process if it requests it (which of course is quite common).
So as time passes, you'll see less and less Free memory and more and more Inactive memory; this means your Mac is working properly. In fact, after running for a long time, if there's much Free memory left, it is, in a sense, wasted!
The thing to watch for is Paging. If the "Page outs" figure is high, or changing rapidly, then OSX is having to page stuff out because it's out of both Free and Inactive memory.
A better way to monitor page-outs is via a Terminal command. (The Terminal app is in your Applications/Utilities folder.) Enter the following, exactly as shown, at the prompt:
    sar -g 60 10
Leave the terminal window open, then try to re-create the unresponsive problem.
This should tell you if you are doing pageouts. You'll see a line in the Terminal window every 60 seconds for 10 minutes (or until you quit Terminal), showing the number of pageouts per second. A few pageouts is normal. If you have large numbers of pageouts, then you have a memory problem.

  • Running out of memory - not accessing Virtual Memory

    Hi there,
I am working on a vision application, and trying to process very large images.
    Environment:
    LabVIEW 2014 (14.0f1) 64-bit
    Vision Development Module 2014
    Vision Acquisition Software 2014
    Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit Settings:
    Physical RAM = 8GB
    Virtual RAM Settings:
Unchecked: "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives"
    Checked: "Custom Size"
    Initial Size (MB): 12094
    Maximum Size (MB): 24188
I read in a sequence of images in the LabVIEW application and stitch it together.  I observe (via Task Manager) the physical memory rise up to approx 7.6GB, and then I am getting the "Out of Memory Error".
So it doesn't seem to be accessing the virtual memory I have allocated? Is there a setting for this that I am missing?
    Thanks

LabVIEW does need a contiguous block of memory for every data structure it creates. In addition its arrays are traditionally limited to 2^31-1 elements per dimension since the count member of an array is treated as signed 32 bit integer. This 2^31 limitation very likely doesn't come into play here since IMAQ Vision uses its own internal memory structures and treats IMAQ Vision handles as pointers rather than LabVIEW data handles to make it less prone to unintentional memory copies of the data.
Basically image memory only gets copied when explicitedly calling IMAQ Vision functions or when passing an image to an image control for display in a window. And that is pretty much unavoidable. So if you create an image that uses 4GB of memory you quickly end up consuming 2 or 3 blocks of contiguous 4GB memory. Due to memory fragmentation, even if your system has still 4 or more GB of memory free, calling a function that (temporarely) causes another copy in memory of that 4GB image may still fail, since there is no contiguous block of memory available anymore in the system. And yes that data has to be in physical memory as it is actively used at that moment.

  • I want to use Meteor app but run out of memory.

Is there a way I can store data on the cloud, so freeing up memory to work on any given app? I run out of space all the time. I use lots of apps in different media so
can I say, do some work on one app then save the files to the Cloud, then reload later when I need it. Basically, I feel I should only Keep the apps on my iPad, then on each separate app save the work as I finish for the day to Keep my memory uncluttered? Any help would be appreciated. I spent lots on apps but run out of memory. Thanks.

Only if the individual Apps support saving to the cloud. Otherwise no. There is no user access to the iCloud storage area.
Its only there for backups, and data syncronization between certain Apps that support it.

  • Running out of memory with Tomcat !!!!!

    Hello gurus and good folk:
How can I ensure that the a JSP page that sets a ResultSet doesn't run out of memory? I have set the X flag to j2Se to be 1024mb and still runs out of memory! The size of the data being queried is only 30 MB. One would think the JDBC driver will be optimized for large ResultSet. Any pointers will be very helpful.
    Many thanks
    Murthy

    Hi
As far as i believe, 30 mb data is pretty big for an online app. If you have too many rows in ur resultset, you could(or should) consider implementing paging and fetch x records at a time. Or you could just have a max limit for the records to be fetched(typically useful for 'search and list' type of apps) using Statement.setMaxRows(). This should ensure that Out of memory errors do not happen.
If your data chunk per row is large, consider displaying only a summary in the result and fetching the 'BIG' data column only when required(e.g. fetch the column value for a particular row only when that row is clicked).
    Hope this helps !

  • Aperture runs out of memory generating previews

    Memory:          10 GB
After moving my photoes to an external drive as referenced images, and a library rebuild, Aperture is attempting to recreatea all of my previews.  After generateing a couple of hunderd previews, it runs out of memory and I can see the following errors in the system console:

Inactive memory quickly uses up all available memory and is not released.  Quitting Aperture only releases half of the inactive memory.
Any ideas on how to get previews generated without running out of memory?  I've tried running aperture in 32-bit mode, with no difference in behavior.

Are Previews being generated as you import, or later?  I am asking because I can identify with memory issues when editing numerous images from my D800 in succession (which are huge), but i am not seeing it while importing.

  • Question. Why don't the apple company ever make a memory card that people could use for their apple product just in case customers run out of memory on their apple product?

Question. Why don't the apple company ever make a memory card that people could use for their apple product just in case customers run out of memory on their apple product?

One thing the iPad lacks is a file manager. There is no file explorer native on the iPad. If you started adding plugin cards, then you add the need for that.  And, in PC's, most viruses spread via the file explorer (the definition of a virus is a malicious program that propagates itself across multiple programs)
There are a few drives out there for iDevices. Such as the WiDrive and others.

  • Why does the iPad 2 run out of memory

Why does the iPad 2 run out of memory?

First ...read deggie's response. Makes sense - even a computer running a large amount of RAM can run short on memory depending upon the operation you are performing so sometimes you have to do what is available to "clear" the memory.
You can ...close apps and restart the iPad on occasion. You close apps by double tapping the home button to bring up your recent apps in the multitasking tray. Tap and hold down on any of the icons until they all begin to wiggle. Then tap the minus signs in the corner of the apps to close them. Close all of your apps in that area. Also take note of how many apps are down there. That may have something to do with why the iPad is running out of memory. Tap the home button twice to return to the home screen. Then restart your iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and slide to shut off. To power up, hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If you do this once in a while, it may make a difference in how your iPad performs. In any event, it will not hurt anything.

Is it possible to store txt message history on the memory card? - Always running out of txt storage space on my phone. I've never gotten close to being able to store 300 messages as indicated on pg 58 of the manual, so I must be missing something.
I might get 35 or 40 and then get storage limit warnings

    A_Ohmstede,
I know it can be frustrating seeing that inbox get full and having to delete
stored messages.  I do see in the Samsung manual where it advises that it
will store a maximum of 300 messages on the phone.  The number may lower
if there are pictures messages and other things being stored on the device.
Have you checked your total Memory available in Settings and Tools? How much is
currently available?  Please let us know these details and we may be able

  • Lightroom 5 permanently runs out of memory

Lightroom 5 on Windows 7 32 Bit and 8 Gigabytes of memory (more than the 32 Bit system can use) permanently runs out of memory when doing some more complex edits on a RAW file, especially when exporting to 16 Bit TIFF. The RAW files were created by cameras with 10 up to 16 megapixel sensors with bit depths between 12 and 14.
After exporting one or two images to 16 Bit uncompressed TIFF an error message "Not enough memory" will be displayed and only a Lightroom restart solves that - for the next one to two exports. If an image has much brush stroke edits, every additional stroke takes more and more time to see the result until the image disappears followed by the same "Not enough memory" error message.
A tab character in the XMP sidecar file is *not* the reason (ensured that), as mentioned in a post. It seems that Lightroom in general does not allocate enough memory and frees too less/late allocated.
Please fix that bug, it's not productive permanently quit and restart Lightroom when editing/exporting a few RAW files. Versions prior to Lightroom 4 did not have that bug.
P.S. Posting here, because it was not possible to post it at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/new It's very bad design, to let a user take much time to write and then say: "Log in", but a log in with the Adobe ID and password does not work (creating accounts on Facebook etc. is not an acceptable option, Adobe ID should be enough). Also a bugtracker such as Bugzilla would be a much better tool for improving a software and finding relevant issues to avoid duplicate postings.

First of all: I personally agree with your comments regarding the feedback webpage. But that is out of our hands since this is a user-to-user forum, and there is nothing we users can do about it.
Regarding your RAM: You are running Win7 32-bit, so 4 GB of your 8 GB of RAM sit idle since the system cannot use it. And, frankly, 4 GB is very scant for running Lr, considering that the system uses 1 GB of that. So there's only 3 GB for Lr - and that only if you are not running any other programs at the same time.
Since you have a 8 GB system already, why don't you go for Win7 64-bit. Then you can also install Lr 64-bit and that - together with 8 GB of RAM - will bring a great boost in Lr performance.
Adobe recommends to run Lr in the 64-bit version. For more on their suggestion on improving Lr performance see here:

  • I have a file where I am running out of memory can anyone take a look at this file and see?

I am trying to make this file 4'x8'.
Please let me know if anyone can help me get this file to that size.
I have a quad core processor with 6 gig of ram and have gotten the file to 50"x20", but I run out of memory shortly thereafter.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

Where to begin? You should look into using a swatch pattern instead of those repeating circles. Also, I see that each circle in your pattern is actually a stack of four circles, but I see no reason why. Perhaps Illustrator is choking on the huge number of objects required to make that patterns as you haave constructed it.
Here is a four foot by eight foot Illustrator file using a swatch pattern. Note that, despite the larger size, the file is less than one 16th the size.

You can't use icloud to store photos.  There's a service called photo stream which is used to sync photos from one device to another, but this can't be used to store photos permanently.
Always sync photos from a device to your computer,  Then you can delete them from the device.
