Why am I getting No bootable device error?

Hi
I restarted my Mac and out of nowhere it now comes up with the error "No bootable device......press any key"
I have managed to get on my mac by holding alt and it works fine when I am on, however I don't want to do this everytime I log in and I am concerned by this.
My mac is new and has been working fine, the only thing I can think of was Netflix wasn't working so I installed microsoft silverlight and then restarted computer few hours afterwards and this happened.
How can I stop this? Tried a few things and although the mac appears to work fine it is worrying. The drive and everything is fine, so bit confused

Hold down the option key at the startup chime and select your OS X startup volume from the array of icons that appears. After logging in, open the Startup Disk preference pane and select the volume again. Then fix your Boot Camp installation, or delete it in Boot Camp Assistant.
If the above steps don't solve the problem, reset the PRAM.

  • Getting "No Bootable device" Error Message

I bought my daughter a new Satellite Laptop earlier in the spring (April 10th) and am having an issue trying to get it to start. Its a C55D-A5120 (S/N XXXXXXXXX P/N PSCFWU-03H02X) and I'm having truble just trying to get help from Toshiba. I originally had registered the laptop when I set it up for her out of the box. I followed every step during the initial start up process but appraently the registration didn't take with Toshiba. The last 3 laptops I've purchased have been Toshiba due to boycotting Dell for their shady business practices with product support. I'll be buying another laptop in the spring and this could very well determine what brand I buy. I live and die by customer service in my line of work and expect "reasonable" service.
Today I called technical support and got the run around from a young lady who said it hadn't been registered but she could help me with that. Okay, good. Umm, no. She said she couldn't register it for some error widow that was popping up on her screen. She said she'd have to transfer me to the warranty department, Okay, good. Umm, no. Warranty was having some technical issue and it hung upon me.
When I originally set up the machine, I had made a full recovery disc but put it on a flash drive. Leave it to a teenage girrl to not be able to find something I said we hopefully wont need but remeber where you put it. That didn't work. Okay, get on Toshiba's website and followed the directions for accessing the recovery section on the HD. Pushing the zero button (either one- also the F2 key does the same thing) and the power button makes it start powering up for about 1 second nad then goes completely dead. Nothing. Without holding any keys, the Toshiba flash sreen comes up and before the Windows boot screen comes up, I get the "No bootable device" error message. It absolutely will not go past that using any method shown anywhere. This is with the a/c adapter plugged in.
The lady I spoke with couldn't tell me if the machine was under warranty or not. I was under the impression the hardware was covered for 1 year. Seems I have a completely dead HD but I'm not the expert. I did remove the battery, the RAM to ispect and clean the conductr strip, same with the HD. That's about where my comfort level ends for the hardware. I hate to spend $40 on a recovery CD if the HD is dead, I can't get into the BIOS to swap what it boots off of. That tells me I have a hardware issue, not a software issue. Is there not a Toshiba warranty service center that can honestly tell me what is going on with this machine?
Any suggestions? I've tried to include pertinent info here. I don't have hours to spend trying to get this fixed. What are my choices? I've been very happy with my virtually identical machine.

    Hi Peter,
    Thanks for the reply.
No, I had already ran across that page and tried that. It won't let me submit it unless a attach a file with a copy of the original receipt, and I had given that to my daughter along with the back up flash drive. I'm not 100% certain of the purchase date. The woman I spoke with wouldn't even tell me what the warranty coverage would be on that laptop. I was under the impression it was a 90 day software, 1 year hardware (for defects in materials or workmanship) warranty. She was so nice as to transfer me to a warranty department that was experiencing technical difficulty.
    Thanks again for your reply!

  • Satellite L750 - No bootable device error at start-up

I am getting a No Bootable Device error when trying to start my Satellite L750/755.
Before I try any recovery, is it possible to remove the HDD and connect it to my other PC so that I can get all my photos, music, etc. off it. If so what do I need.
I did this on my old desktop, and bought a HDD caddy with a USB connection, so the HDD just looked like an external drive.
    Many Thanks
    Tim

Yes, you can remove HDD and connect it to your other notebook/PC using external USB HDD enclosure. Using such enclosure you can connect your HDD as external device that should be recognized and listed in Windows Explorer so you can have full access to all your saved data.
Back-up all your data and put the HDD back in your notebook.
Usually if there is no some hardware problem you can start your notebook and press F12 to enter boot menu. When the boot menu is shown on the screen you can put recovery disc info optical disc drive, choose CD/DVD drive and press ENTER button. After doing this optical drive should start to read disc and start to copy data to the HDD.
What you can do before you start to use recovery disc is to enter BIOS and set it to default settings.
Please try all this and send some feedback.

  • Successfully partitioned but receive 'no bootable device error'

Successfully partitioned late 2007 macbook with bootcamp 4. When I turn on my mac I get the 'no bootable device error.' I tried the advice of only having in the disc I want to install from but still no success. If I restart and hold down 'option' I only see Mac OSX and Recovery mode as options. I tried inserting a disc at that point, but its still not working.
I have a USB with the windows 7 iso install file on it, DVD with the iso file in the packed version, and a second DVD with the contents removed from the iso file.
Not really know which one would be best to use so I've been trying all of them.
I'm also running Lion if that is any additional help. Thanks for any assistance!

I'm not sure how I'm going in circles.  The problem I was having was "Now I have the issue where the keyboard and touchpad don't work in the Windows 7 installation."
Anyway, I tried a Windows 8.1 install, and that worked perfect.  So not sure what the problem is, but I'll just go with Windows 8 to solve my problem.  Thanks for your help.

  • Why am I getting an app store error when trying to download Lion?

Why am I getting an app store error when trying to download Lion? Any ideas?

I would complain really bad and get them to give you a Flash card that they just came out with because they've inconvenienced you so much and  you don't have hours to spend at the apple store waiting for the whole thing to load.
The only thing about the flash cards is that it will change your whole motherboard so it won't allow you to install snow leopard or anything less, ever again. (as what the apple specialist told me over the phone).
I would also suggest waiting. It really isn't worth the hastle and you may not benefit from installing it on your old computer... just a thought.

  • Why does it say No bootable device Insert bootable device?

Why does it say No bootable device Insert bootable device?

Can i suggest you spend more time explaining the situation, what you are doing, what has been done recently, etc?   One sketchy line is not much help.
That said, i will guess that yu are trying to turn on your mac, and it gve you that message, immediately.
It means that soemthing has caused it to not recognize your hard disk and the OSX software on it.  It could be:
    1. a dmaaged disk
    2. corrupted software
    3. a firmware bug
    4. a hardware failure
Most likely the software has been corrupted at least slightly.
The best first step is to boot from your original CD and run disk diagnostics/ repairs on the hard drive.
    I hope that fixes it.
Then go buy an external bootabl hard drive and begin making complete, bootable backups on  weekly basis.

  • Replaced hard drive on hdx 16-1140us get No bootable device

I had a complete hard drive failure on a hdx 16-1140us and had to replace the hard drive. I made the recovery disc when I bought the PC. When I start the PC with "disk 1" I get "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" Any help or advice would greatly be appreciated! Thanks.

    Hi:
If you can't get the recovery disk set you made to work, you may have to order a set of HP factory recovery disks.
Info on how to do that can be found at the link below.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07143&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lan...
If you are adventurous and can follow instructions, you can make your own Vista 32 or 64 bit plain installation disk by downloading the 3 applicable files at the link below and following the step by step instructions to compile the 3 files into an ISO file which you then burn to a DVD.
Then using the 25 character Vista product key on the bottom of your notebook, you activate the installation.
Apparently the product key you enter will activate (unlock) the version of windows vista that came with your notebook (as you see there is only one Vista file for all versions).
    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3317.2-3-microsoft-windows-vi...
Once installed, you can get whatever drivers you need and whatever software is available for download from your notebook's support and driver page.

  • Get "no bootable device- insert boot disc and hit any key" error

    Hp G72 Laptop, Windows 7 64 bit,
"no bootable device-insert boot disc and hit any key" (I have no boot disc.)
I was in the process of replacing the hard drive and the computer was starting the final phase after copying all files. When it restarted the first time, I got the message. I was getting this message randomly prior to replacing the hard drive and if I turned it off for 2 or 3 hours and turned back on I would not get the message. The reason for replacing the hard drive was a "Smart Disc " imminent failure error message.

Yes and yes. The final recovery disc had completed and it was moving to the next phase. It said the computer would restart several times during this phase and when it went to the first restart, the error message came up and I could proceed no further. I ctrl/alt/del and restarted, pressed escape to get the start-up menu but was lost at all the options. The information screen looked like the old hard drive info.

    Hello,
I recently purchased Windows 7 Ultimate and am trying to install it on my MacPro running Lion and Bootcamp 4.0.  I spent the last couple of days looking online at other fourms and YouTube videos to no luck.  I installed Windows 7 and can get it to boot successfully using the Option Key when restarting, but only when the Windows 7 disc is in the drive.   When the disc is out of the drive I get the following error when booting into Windows: "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" and basically freezes.   Does anyone know how to fix this error?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

I ran Bootcamp, first downloading the the apple install files for windows and then creating the partition.  I choose to partition my hard drive 60 gB.  Then I installed the 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate and ran though the standard process, including choosing the reformat to NTFS file system.  I then installing Windows using the defaults, and ran thought the defaults.  I remember then installing Apple "setup" from the install files I downloaded.  I also remember setting the startup disc to "Macintosh HD" in the Windows 7.   Basically I ran though the bootcamp installation guide.  I sorry if this isn't that technical, I not a techie.  If there is more info that helps, let me know.
If it helps my laptop is:
    MacBook Pro 15-inch, Late 2008
    Mac OS X Verison 10.7.1
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 6 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    Thanks, Chris

  • No Bootable Device error after fresh install

I recently erased the original 80gb hard drive from my MacMini by removing the hard drive from the mini and putting it in a HD enclosure. Afterwards, I erased it using the Disk Utilities on my Macbook Pro before installing Snow Leopard. The installation went error free and was able to load the OS from my MacMini HD that was in the enclosure. However, when I put the hard drive back into my MacMini, I get the "No Bootable Device - Insert boot disk or press any key" message. I repeated the erase and installation 3x but still get the same message.

witch mac mini do you have? is it a G4 or intel?
Is there a reason you pulled the drive instead of just booting to the install disk?
Is the install disk the one that was included with your MacBook Pro? or is it a commercial disk?
Do you know if you partitioned the hard driving using GUID or some thing else?

  • Satellite A305 problem: "No bootable device" error after dropping unit

I'm hoping someone can help me out here. Last night, I went to set my A305 laptop down on the coffee table. During the motion, my dog, which I was stepping over, jumped up and took off which almost knocked me over. When this happened, I lost my grip on the computer and dropped it onto the coffee table at a height of about 2-3 feet. It was in standby mode so I pressed the button to wake it back up to see if I damaged it. The Internet Explorer session I was previously in pulled up, but nothing would happen when I clicked on any browser buttons or links. I shut down the computer and upon restarting, I got the black screen with "TOSHIBA" in red, as usual, and then I got a black screen with this error message: For Realtek RTL8101E/8102E PCI-E Ethernet Controller v1.07 (080320)PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cablePXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROMNo bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key I couldn't get it to do anything else at all, even after several shut down attempts. Does anyone know what could be causing this to happen? Is it a hard drive malfunction as a result from the drop? The unit had worked perfectly for a little over a year up until this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Possible, yes.  Can you do it at home, no.  Due to the clearances involved you need to do this in a special clean room as the slightest piece of dust or debri that is normally floating around in the air would ruin the platters that the data is stored on.  If the drive won't work you'll need to send it to a professional data recovery service to have them do it and the cost of something like that starts at about a grand and goes up depending on the specifics. But before we go there you need to determine if the problem is for sure the hard drive.  Enter the bios and check to see if it is even being recognized or not.  Also, take the hard drive out and boot to a self booting CD/DVD like a Linux Live CD to verify that the rest of the system is working properly.  If it isn't, then the problem might not be the hard drive itself (although the chances of that are about the same as winning the lottery).  If the laptop had been off there is a good chance that it would have survived and still worked.  But anytime a rotating hard drive sustains any sort of impact shock the chances of it sustaining damage are about 98%.

  • I liveCDed linux for a moment, now i get no bootable device, must OPTION

problem; i can no longer boot without pressing the OPTION key and manually choosing a macOS volume.
    this happens now after;
    i booted a mandriva linux liveCD, just to check it out, and now, when i boot my macpro2,1 i get a black screen with white letters saying;
no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key
so i force powerdown, reboot with the OPTION key, and get my choice of macOS harddrives that will boot almost normally.
i say almost, because before i get the gray apple screen, my Highpoint eSata PCIe card gives me a blue menu screen of their BIOS setting utility v.2.3, 'please wait...' for about 8 seconds.
After that, my monitors go through auto-sensing, as if macOS forgets its previous video settings.
Its as if the machine is now geared to search for a bootable system on my external eSata drives and ignores the internal drives. This is odd because in principle, this PCIe card isn't boot capable under macOS.
I'm guessing, linux modified or replaced the highpoint driver for the card. the volumes mount no problem. But i did lose one of the hard drives. I had to reformat it. Bizarre since i didn't install anything, just booted off the CD.
So now, i have to press OPTION to manually select either leopard or snow.
    what has happened?
    i have a macpro 2,1 (2007)
with a highpoint 2314 PCIe eSata card

i didn't even think to try that, because my machine doesn't care what i choose, it chooses another one half the time. But for this problem, it worked.
i still would like to know what happened, though. Is there a boot director cache, that 'remembered' the last kernel (linux) booted?
And why does snow leopard appear as 'EFI boot' (when i press OPTION to boot) while leopard appears normal ; 10.5.8

  • No Bootable Device Error when trying to bootcamp!

Hey guys I have been trying to bootcamp on and off for the past month or so now. Anyway I downloaded a windows 7 x32 bit iso from Microsoft's website. I then used Burn to burn it to a disc by doing: Copy> Dragging the image in> Mount and then right clicking on the image on the desktop and clicking burn to disc. Not bootcamp itself worked fine, a bit slow, but i managed to make a 100gb partition. Now whenever I try to boot into windows, I get the dreadfull "No bootable device - insert a bootable device and press any key"
I know the .iso is valid because i succesfully made a Parallels V<M with it, but parallels is too slow for skyrim.
I think its also important to note that I have using an external optical drive, since my dad got gum in it XD.
Anyways help is VERY MUCH appreciated! If you need anymore info, just ask.

Okay so I found a similar tutorial, only a little more detailed. This can be found here: http://www.andrewsavory.com/blog/2011/2156
So I follow the instructions to a tee, but when I try to start the installation of the VM, I get a "Missing Operating System" Error.
    Anyways Heres what I did:
Went to terminal and typed this in:
    mkdir Virtual\ Machines
    /Applications/VMware\ Fusion.app/Contents/Library/vmware-rawdiskCreator print /dev/disk0
    Then This:
    /Applications/VMware\ Fusion.app/Contents/Library/vmware-rawdiskCreator create /dev/disk0 3 windows7 ide
SO I enter those right in terminal as is and hit enter. Then I search using spotlight and found two files:
    windows7-pt.vmdk and windows7.vmdk
So I follow the instructiopns again and I think I might be messing up at this step:
" You’ll then be taken to the Customize Settings screen, where you want to configure the ISO to boot from. Click on the CD/DVD (IDE) option [...]
And then select the location of your Windows 7 ISO:"
SO I choose my windows 7 x32 iso FIle and just close the window. Am I missing anything?
