Why Am I Having to Make Way Too Many Hard Restarts?

Over the past couple of weeks, my wife and I have managed to lock up one or more programs to the point that it is necessary to shut down the computer using the power switch. The latest examples involve editing existing MS Word 2008 files in compatibility mode, but last week it was iTunes and I forget what other program.
I switched to the Mac because Windows kept doing this sort of thing ...

(1) We first noticed the problem after we had purchased a game called "Bejeweled 2".
If it was me and I had a full backup prior to the installation of the game, I would restore to that point.
I moved the game program to the trash,
Moving the program to the trash does not delete the program. Everything is still on your hard disk and if something in that game is causing the hang, that piece of code is still on your computer.
If the game has an "Uninstall" option on the install disk or in the downloaded DMG, I suggest running the Uninstall.
Firmware updates?
Normally those will come up in the Software Update window. Once in a while I log into http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ then do a search on "Firmware" and my machine ID (Like iMac or MacBook Pro).
I just noticed that my external LaCie 1 GB drive,
I lost mine a few weeks ago as well. Odd. Shut down, unplug the drive, restart, then open Disk Utility. With Disk Utility running in the front window, plug in the LaCie drive and attempt to mount it.
Mine would not come back up so I reformatted it - using the GUID option - and it has been running flawlessly ever since.
Following is over the top, totally unnecessary OCD behavior of a nut who wants everything perfect. Feel free to totally ignore everything that follows.
I started managing networks and supporting individual PCs back in the 1980s. I developed some odd habits. One thing I learned with DOS and Windows computers was that it was often easier to start over than to spend weeks chasing a problem. Once I moved to Macs, I kept my old habits.
You probably do not want to copy my example, but here is what I do:
1.) When I buy a new computer, I transfer the OS installation disks to an external hard disk using the Restore function of disk utility.
2.) I also transfer all of my software installers to the same hard disk as disk images.
3.) When software updates are available, I download the files from the Downloads page to the same external drive. (I don't do the installs from Software Update; I only use that to tell me what needs updating.)
4.) When something goes really bad - almost always from third party software, almost never from Apple software - I wipe the hard drive on the computer and do a full clean reinstall from my external disk. Because EVERYthing - the OS, the updates, and all my applications - are on the external hard disk, the reinstall goes very fast.
Of course, when I do the clean reinstall, I skip whatever application or utility I suspect caused my problem.
The full clean reinstall takes up to three or four hours which I can do while watching an evening of TV. To me, this is a far far better use of my time than spending weeks trying to find that ONE application extension or preference file that is trashing my system.
(By the way, when I do the clean install, I NEVER restore the Library from my back up. I restore all my data from back up, but I trash the old Libraries because whatever went wrong is still in there ... like a bad Ktext extension from a wayward game or widget.)
Now just to prove I really am a NUT, my other system: I keep a firewire external drive cloned to my computer using SuperDuper! When I have updates or new applications, I shut down and boot from the clone. I install the update or the new application on the clone. If that doesn't crash my system, then I'll go ahead and reboot to the internal drive and repeat the installation.
Yep. I have WAY too much time on my hands. But.... I lost all of my staff computers to a bad Windows service pack several years ago and I decided "never again". The Apple OS is not prone to those types of regular Windows disasters, and I have never lost critical data on a Mac, and I have never had an entire department off-line for a week due to a bad Mac OS update. Still, I am old, old habits die hard, so I do this stuff with my Macs at home.
Of course I hope none of these extraordinary efforts are necessary in your case. With luck you can Uninstall the game, reformat your LaCie, and be back to flawless operation shortly.
Hope all this helps ... (jk)

I need to remove the default Firefox bookmarks.
There are way too many and none of which are usefull to me.
Also, I am vision impaired and reading through such a long list is very eye-fatigueing to me.
I would like to make my old IE Favorites folder the default. How can I do this?

Did you import an iPhoto Library from the old Hard Drive? Do you still have that old Library?
The way to clear out a Library is to Export the photos - Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
    For the annoying start-up message:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.

  • How do you sync contacts with gmail, not other place on computer? I don't know where the contacts came from on that are now on my new phone. There are way too many and it is not my list of contacts I have on gmail. Where else is this from?

I don't know where the contacts came from on that are now on my new phone. There are way too many and it is not my list of contacts I have on gmail. Where else is this from? I spent a LONG time on gmail going through my list of contacts. There were about 400 and I got it down to about 90. When I went to sync my new phone, ALL 400 synced.
    Thank you for any help!

Sorry for the repeat...new here. OBVIOUSLY.

  • I take a lot of people shots and have way too many out of focus pics.

I have way too many out of focus shots.  I usually use tv mode with the shutter set at least 250 with the anti shake on.  I know there is a balance of aperature, iso and they seem to be close enough for lighting but the out of focus drives me nuts. This is the most important aspect of a pic in my opinion. I have sent my T2i in for focus issues two times and cannot tell a difference.  Any suggestions????
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

We'd probably have to see your shots with EXIF data to provide a specific response.
Canon did a 3-part video on how the AF system works with B&H Photo.  You can find the videos on YouTube... here's the link to part I:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAx86nblZ2g
I seem to recall each part is about 30 minutes, but well worth the time in what you'll learn about the focus system that you might not have known.
A LOT of factors can result in out of focus images.  Camera movement (slow shutter speed during a hand-held shot) is just one of many possibilities.

There is no such Trojan or other malware known today that will do that using OS X nor has there ever been one. The most probable explanation is that somebody hacked into your e-mail account on the server, so you should change that password to something stronger right away. If it had come from your Mac then there would almost certainly be copies of those messages in your Sent Mail mailbox.

    Sharon-
    Good idea.
    Back up first.
I would probably wait for the merge function of the latest version before merging. Be sure to verify every merge.
Merge Libraries, then from within Aperture move images to referenced on external hard drives.

  • HT1338 Why can't I update my iPad iso 4.2 version? I go to setting and it does not have it like it should. Why does apple have to make things so freaking hard! Help!

Why can't I update my iPad iso 4.2 version? I go to setting and it does not have it like it should. Why does apple have to make things so freaking hard! Help!

If you have an original iPad 1, the latest version of iOS it can run is iOS 5. So you should be able to update no problem.
Update iTunes to the latest version (11.0.2). Then simply plug your iPad into the computer and open iTunes. Click the iPad either in the sidebar or the top navigation bar. Then attempt to update the software. If it doesn't work, please post the exact error message.
Note that it would be wise to first ensure you back up the iPad.

  • Too many hard drives?

I'm experiencing a growing problem, and that's that I'm getting too many hard drives. I originally bought a 250GB drive, then added a 400GB drive, and lastly I got a 100GB bus powered drive for portability. But now I need another drive for media and render files. The problem comes when I've run out of power outlets, and only see that issue getting worse. I was thinking of getting something that will let me expand my storage as my needs grow, without needed added power supplies. Basically I need an enclosure that I would plop extra drive in as I need them, does anyone know of such a thing? I've looked but the devices I've found aren't really what I had in mind.
    Thanks,
    -Brian

    hey Brian
sounds like you need to do some Media Management. although others may be using considerably more, 750GB is still a fair chunk of drive space.
do you regularly backup finished projects to tape, archive projects and non-timecode related media to DVD, clear off no longer needed media?
this isn't a bad intro to project and media management:
    http://larryjordan.biz/articles/lj_archive.html
regarding the, pop in another drive idea. do you actually need the old drive and media to still be available? if not, an oft used technique these days is to use a FW or SATA disc enclosure ... if you budget in the cost of the disc with each job, then each new job or client can get there own hard disc, when the job is done you pop out the disc and put it on the shelf, and then simply replace with a new disc in the enclosure. these days disc space is dirt cheap.
    hope it helps

  • My macbook pro broke down way too many times!

    Hi
I bought my macbook pro in 2007 so it's been 3 years and my applecare is ready to expire.
and within that 3 years, my macbook pro has gone to get it fixed for more than 6 times. Anything that you can imagine, broke down.
Logic board, fans, speakers, keyboards, usb plug-ins, software issue, hard drive broke down twice, battery replaced, charger replaced, screen replaced, my screens bent due to heat, part of my comp is melted due to heat too, and etc.
I study graphic design in university right now. and this piece of junk is hunting me everynight because these problems happen over night. I would turn my computer off ok, and when I wake up, somethings always wrong. I'm always scared and backing my stuff because I don't know when this piece of junk will break down. It's really stressing me out.
Today, I woke up and turned my macbook pro like usually, and my screens black but everything else is running. Again, another fixing problem (heard that its due to the nvidia graphic issue)
so I am really upset and ****** off more so. I've gone to the applestore at least 10 times already and everytime I go, they are very cold and rude to me.
so I talked to the manager last time when my computer broke down saying, I am really upset and ****** off about your customer service and this stupid junk. I lost alot of my files and was late to submit my works due to this stupid junk. What are you going to do? and all they said was I'm sorry we understand. Clearly they dont understand. and I saw alot of my friends who got new laptops after breaking down once with similar problem as mine. but why am I not getting a new laptop? is there a way to fix this problem? or am I gonna live with this comp till i buy a new one?
    please help me.

I would tend to agree with your points here. (Except that it is not "a piece of junk").
My macbook pro is also from 2007 (august) and has had a number of different problems - mostly due to overheating.
Added to these problems in Ireland is that Apple do not have an official mac store here ... so it has to go to a service provider each time. That's more than likely 1+ weeks away each time it needs to be sent away for repair.
One time I sent it back they replaced the screen with the incorrect resolution so it was away for almost 3 weeks in total. When it got back the screen squeaked when I was opening it. I called Apple (luckily I have 3 year applecare) but they told me to deal directly with the partner service provider. I didn't feel this was acceptable because I purchased the Apple Care from Apple - not the service provider.
I almost had to pay for shipping each time but I argued with them on the phone. I don't feel this is acceptable level of service.
After the third time with something broken on my MBP I requested a new machine. They ignored me.
I disagree that the MBP is "a piece of junk". It is not. But it does have problems. Overheating seems to be its biggest problem and that leads to other faults. The thing that Apple does not seem to see is that the overheating leads to long-term damage but by the time this long-term damage becomes obvious the Apple Care is gone so the customer is left to fend for themselves.
Apple service in Ireland is a terrible setup. Apologies if I have hi-jacked your thread but I am also angry.

  • IPhoto 09 has way too many duplicates

I did not import twice, but iPhoto seems to be creating duplicates of many of my photos, and I am not sure why. I am not editing them, so that rules out iPhoto keeping a copy of the original and modified. Is there any way I can stop iPhoto from randomly duplicating photos? And is there a way I can remove those duplicates without searching for each and every one?

1 - iPhoto does not "randomly" make duplicates
2 - where are you seeing these - are they n the iPhoto window?
3 - if you are using the finder (or the all images smart folder) to see them then you (and this in not advised) may be seeing modified versions that are created because you have auto rotate photos selected on your camera - to stop this change the option on the camera
4 - if you are seeing them using the finder do not delete them or modify them in any way - you will corrupt your iPhoto library - and they are not duplicates - they are different in some way

  • Time Machine preparing WAY too many items

I just noticed that my Time Machine backups are taking an unusually long time. So when the last one finished, I immediately ran a second backup with Time Machine preferences open so I could watch the progress bar. It said it was “Preparing (about) 3,200 Items...” for a total of 660 KB. The backup took about 6 or 7 minutes. This now happens every time TM does a backup.
Obviously this is very wrong given that only a few seconds had passed between backups and nothing had changed. There should have been a handful of items to prepare, and the backup should have taken a few seconds. I installed TimeTracker, and it showed a few dozen items had been backed up. I made sure to open every folder/subfolder but found nothing that would account for 3,200 items.
Anyone have any idea what might be going on?

When I reinstalled my software I didn't drag any of the old preference files back over either, just in case something was corrupted. And everything I installed software-wise has been running on 10.6.8 forever with no issues. The only exceptions were Apple Remote Desktop, which I did not reinstall this time, and a new generation of Plex media server I've been trying out, which I recently upgraded to from an older version.
In theory, a incompatible or faulty kernel extension could cause this, but it's highly doubtful.
I assume there is no way that any my documents could cause strange system behaviour?
Never say never, but highly unlikely.
At times both before and after this rebuild when I've been playing around with TM preferences (selecting the drive, setting which folders to exclude) my CPU will run very high (can't recall the % exactly) and my fans will kick into high gear. Obviously this is not normal, especially with nothing else running at the time. Something is clearly messing with TM.
Ah, yes, very suspicious.  I don't recall seeing this before.
Perhaps the preference file (where all that is kept) is damaged. Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
    If that doesn't help:
Are you running any 3rd-party disk/directory monitoring apps, such as the Directory Protection feature of Tech Tools?
Does that happen with other pages in System Preferences?
Does it happen in a different user account (if you don't have one, create one via System Prefs > Accounts).  You'll have to unlock the panel to make changes from a non-Admin account.
If none of that provides any light, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  See the tan box in OSX Log Files to locate your system.log, then the blue box to decipher it.  Use the technique in the Monitoring the log ... section to see if any messages appear while you're using the TM Prefs window.  If they do, copy and post them (or, if there are a lot of them, a reasonable portion) here.

  • Safari has problems displaying WAY TOO MANY pages.

For some time now, I've noticed that Safari simply cannot display certain pages. The first time I noticed this was on my MBP17 with a Snow Leopard (10.6.8) installation, using Safari 5.1.9. After a barage of Security Updates started creating a flurry of problems on this computer (including the Safari problem, as best I recall), I finally gave in and migrated (I can't really say upgraded) to Mountain Lion. It was my hope that this would cure the recent problems. It did not! After migrating to Mountain Lion (10.8.5) and Safari 6.0.5, I still see the same thing that I get on my MBP15 that remains on OS 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.9.
The problem I see is that Safari simply can't display certain pages. Many of them are on Apple's own website. For a while, I just thought Apple was creating pages with no content. It wasn't until I got to a page that had menus that wouldn't work (at all), that I decided to try the same page with Firefox. To my surprise, the page displayed perfectly on Firefox. I pasted the source code from pages displayed in both the Safari and Firefox into separate BBEdit documents and compared the source. It was absolutely identical! Presumably, therefore, the problem occurs with JavaScript modifications to the DOM. While it's easy to cut n' paste the DOM from Firefox, I've yet to find an easy way to do this with Safari's debugger. So, I can't tell exactly where the problem starts. Besides... Apple just doesn't pay me enough to debug their code for them!
The follow screenshots show the results of the attempt to display http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ in both browsers. (I was on this page trying to figure out a solution to the error message "an unknown error occurred (-42408)" that I keep getting in iTunes... a whole different can of worms!)
As displayed in Safari (or as NOT displayed in Safari)...
    As displayed in Firefox...
This problem crops up on many sites and is rather unpredictable. The thing that amazes me most is how often it occurs on Apple's own site! And since I see it on two different computers, with different OS and Safari installations, I can't possibly be the only one who sees this. I did just try it on my iPad 1 and the same page displays fine. Do I just need to go back to an even older OS version on my MBPs? Maybe OS 8?
Anybody have an idea what might be going on? I have spent the entire past week debugging iOS7, iTunes, Safari and Mtn Lion. After over 34 years on Apple products, I'm just about ready to go buy a PC!! Maybe even a CPM box.
    PLEASE HELP!
PS: Just to make it WORSE... I have tried to enter this several times and keep getting an error. I finally had to switch to Firefox and try again. What the HEXX has happened to Apple???

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.
