Why am I losing disc space for no apparent reason?

The past few days, I have been losing disc space and haven't been adding anything.
I was at about 10 GB free, and suddenly my computer was telling me that I had 0. I freed up 2 more GB, and a few minutes later it was down to 371 MB, then 100 MB, then 0 (within the span about 15 minutes). I repeated this process, and about the same thing happened.
I've deleted about half of my iPhoto library, a large portion of iTunes, deleted Safari caches, and most documents. I even did scans with Grand Perspective, and it only shows about 40 GB taken up. I should have at least 34 GB open, and yet somehow that is not the case.
Even in the past hour, I deleted 500 songs, and my space has gone down. HELP ME!

First thing I suggest is be sure you emptied your trash after all the deleting.
I use WhatSize to check space on my drive.
Disk Inventory X is also good for this.
The X Lab: Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk has some good information on what to look for when cleaning your drive.

  • Just recently I'm showing that I've lost a very large amount of disc space for no apparent reason?

I have 750GB MacBook Pro and up until the other day I showed 250GB used and 500GB unused.  I discovered this because the past two days my computer would just freeze and I couldn't do anything.  So I ran the Disc Utility and it found some errors and fixed them.  So I'm wondering if the 400GB of lost disc space now has something to do with the computer locking up? I've searched all the folders and added up their size and still come back to 250GB that I can see.  So I'm assuming there's something hidden somewhere that's eating up over half my hard disc space?  HELP!

So somewhere I have between 450 - 500 GB's taking up my disk space?
Yes, exactly. The total used, per the sidebar, is 735 GB, but the total at the top is 269 GB, leaving 466 GB unaccounted-for.  As mentioned in the Other large files section of the Where did my Disk Space go? article, the similar free apps don't show things the logged-on user isn't permitted to see. Unfortunately, the version of WhatSize on the AppStore doesn't, either. A few of those are detailed in the green box.
First, have you Verified your internal HD, per the link in the yellow box at the top of the article?  If not, do so.  If that doesn't say your disk "appears to be ok," follow the instructions there to start from your Recovery HD and Repair it, then have WhatSize re-measure your drive.
If that doesn't help, do you have more than one user account (besides the 230 GB bkundinger)?  If so, log on to the other(s), use WhatSize to see how large those home folders are, and add them to the 269 GB total.
If not, or if that doesn't explain the difference, you need to be able to see everything.  Probably the best way to do that is with the version of WhatSize that you get directly from the vendor -- just click the link in the green box or go to http://whatsizemac.com.  That version has the "As Admin" icon in the toolbar, per the sample in the green box.  Click it and enter your Admin password, then have it re-measure your internal HD.
That will take a few moments, of course, but the resulting display should show everything, including the missing 466 GBs.  As noted, don't delete anything you don't understand; if in doubt, post the new screenshot here.

  • Hard Drive Gained Space for no apparent reason...

    Good Evening,
Today I was using my MacBook Pro and I noticed that for some wierd reason my HDD Space Available went from 370.33GB to 370.37GB for no aparent reason. Why has this happened. My Mac has been holding steady at 370.33 for the last month (this measure is after cleaning my mac web history with OnyX for Snow Leopard). As I said I cannot understand why this happened, since again the amount of HDD space available for the last month has been holding steady at 370.33GB for the last month and I have been using OnyX for about 2 months already to clean my web history.
Is there someting wrong with my Mac?
Any help will be appreciated in this matter.
    Thank You.

    I'm baffled by this.
I don't understand why. As multiple people have told you now, this kind of fluctuation is normal. I'm especially baffled by your bafflement since this extra space appeared following deleting a bunch of stuff with Onyx.
BTW, note that you shouldn't be regularly clearing caches with Onyx. Caches exist for a reason. Deleting them constantly actually slows your Mac down. See [Five Mac Maintenance Myths|http://www.macworld.com/article/133684/2008/06/maintenance_intro.html].
There's also not much reason to clear your web history.
I deactivated the delete system cache funtions on OnyX I just delete web history caches with onyx for some odd reason safari does not seem to empty the web cache well. This was the reason of why I installed OnyX on my mac in the first place. I'm very cautious of not deleting any system caches in my mac, I just use the "Internet" tab under the cleaning session of OnyX. I deactivated the all other items in the cleaning session for that purpose (not deleting the system caches). Anyways, since this seems normal in a Mac, I will not worry very further.
By the way the baffled part comes in since I was a Windows user for almost all my life, so I think is due to my inexperience in the Mac platform.
    Thank you for your understanding.

  • Running out of disk space for no apparent reason

My system drive is almost full but I can't find the files that are causing the problem. When I add up the numbers they only come up to 55GB and I have 120GB drive with only 6GB available.

How much available space do you see when you right click on your hard disk (usually Macintosh HD) and use Get Info?
How does that compare to the free space at  > About This Mac > More Info… > Storage?
If there is a large difference it could be Time Machine snapshots that can use up to 80% of your disk.  This is not a problem, it is a feature.  To gain the disk space back, plug in your Time Machine disk and run a backup.
See The Storage Display:  http://pondini.org/OSX/LionStorage.html .

  • Why does an internet connection quit for no apparent reason?

For over a year I've had no problem staying connected to the internet using a

Pay no attention to it's mention of WPA2, it's fixed the problem for a few other methods too.

  • Z1c Losing Network Connection for no Apparent Reason

Hi there, recently I noticed that after longer calls (ca 15+ minutes) my Z1c loses network connection ("No Signal" notification & empty triangle icon instead of signal bars) right after the call has been ended. I tried to turn on and off the airplane mode or to manually select the proper cellular network but these did not bring the signal back. The only thing that helps is restarting the phone (then I get full-strength signal). Just to be clear, I am not referring to a loss of mobile data connection as experienced by some users. What I see is a total loss of mobile network signal. In other words, when this occurs my phone is unreachable (people are not able to call or text me). In the Settings I have "WCDMA (preferred)/GSM". Changing this to "GSM only" is not an option for me because the 2G signal is quite weak and spotty in my area. Using "LTE (preferred)/..." is not an option either due to the lack of LTE coverage. (What can I say -- rural area... :/ ) Additionally, I have enabled the Stamina mode but I doubt this can be the culprit because the problem appeared also when I turned Stamina mode off for a day or so. I should also mention that I use A5.0 Lollipop; however, the problem started appearing only a couple of days ago (I never noticed any such issue with A4.4). Any help would be much appreciated. nvx

I suggest that you try to repair the phone software using PC Companion..
Before repairing your device you may want to backup your information first. Check out this topic for more information on how to.
    How to backup?
If the issue should still remain I think that this needs to be examined and fixed at a repair center. For more information about how to submit your phone for repair and where, contact your local support team.

  • Why does it take more space for pictures to be stored in iPad than iPhone?

Why does it take more space for pictures to be stored in iPad than iPhone?
The same pictures in iPhone utilises half the storage space than in the iPad.

Photos on the ipad should take up little  more space than It does on The iPhone because of the screen resolutions size.
Keep in mind If the photos are being stored on the device by Photo stream they will Take up less Space or if The photo Are being store by itunes syncing they may take up a little more.

I'm trying to burn a Magic DVD in iDVD and I keep getting a message stating that there is not enough free disc space for encoding the remaining assets. How do I resolve this?

It means your hard drive is too full to accomodate the project and its many swap files etc.
You need to move some files (not applications) to your external hard drive, and keep at least 25-30GB free.

  • Not enough free disc space for encoding remaining assets

I get this message when I try to print my DVD   "not enough free disc space for encoding remaining assets"
Does this mean I have too much videos and material on the computer.  I have tried to delete several but it does not seem to be making any difference.  Please help/explain...  Thank you!

IDVD is limited by the duration of your movie and nothing else.
A single layer DVD is good for about two hours.  A dual layer DVD is good for about three hours and 45 minutes.
You do need a certain amount of free space to create DVDs.
To burn your iDVD project to a single-layer DVD disc, you should have 8 to 10 gigabytes (GB) of free disk space on your hard disk, depending on the size of your project. For double-layer discs, you need 15 to 20 GB of free disk space. To check how much disk space you have, Control-click the hard disk icon on your desktop and choose Get Info. Then look next to Available to see how much space you have.
The encoded DVD files remain on your hard disk inside your project’s folder. If you do not want to save the encoded files after you burn your project to a disc, you can delete them.

  • W500 broke down for no apparent reason

    Dear all,
I have a W500 that worked fine for 4 years and suddenly started being faulty for no apparent reason.
I've searched the web and tried many fixes, but I still haven't been able to pinpoint the problem. At this point I suspect that the problem might implicate faulty hardware, though I am not sure. I would really appreciate any suggestions that could help me figure it out and (hopefully) fix it.
The laptop is a ~5 year-old W500 that came with Vista install but was upgraded to windows 7 after a couple of months. I made the BIOS upgrade at that point, but not since.
After trying to rescue it without success, I eventually reset the BIOS to default settings and reinstalled windows 7, and I am now able to use the computer but with many persisting problems.
    Current symptoms
Slow boot time (4-5 min until I can start using windows) with occasional failure to start windows (hangs for hours before log on screen, but without crashing)
Initially failed to shut down, but uninstalling the dvd drive in windows seems to have fixed this.
Black screen appears on two occasions during boot. (1) between the "please wait" screen and the log on screen, and (2) after logging after the "welcome" screen. Each stays for around a minute (I guess they also show on healthy systems but too short to be noticed)
Windows is generally slow and prone to failures. Browsing windows explorer sometimes works fine, sometimes hangs for several tens of seconds. Launching programs takes an unreasonable amount of time (up to several minutes in some cases). Installing programs is incredibly slow and often fails.
Initially, after reinstalling windows, it looked like windows explorer did not refresh itself automatically anymore: if I created a new folder for example, it would not appear until I hit the refresh button. Somehow, this issue seems to have resolved itself, perhaps when uninstalling the cdrom, but I couldn't swear.
Booting in safe mode hangs after loading CLASSPNP.sys, which apparently is a recurring problem. In my case, after re-installing the OS it only hangs for 2-3 minutes and eventually safe mode successfully starts.
Yesterday the graphics driver failed multiple times, which never occurred before (well, maybe once, and a long long time ago). The first time the computer restarted automatically, and the next couple of times the screen just went black but the computer was still running.
Apparently I am unable to restore to factory state using the rescue&recovery environment. The partition which I believe to be the recovery partition (it has drive letter D: and no name, it guess this happened when installing the new OS) cannot be accessed from DOS (I/O error comes up, I am not sure if this is normal or not), and browsing it in windows explorer causes it to freeze. In safe mode it does appear in disk management, where is says 9.8GB, RAW, primary, healthy, 100% free space. Rescue and recovery environment does not start (perhaps as a consequence of this).
Since reinstalling windows the fingerprint reader does not work, and the "mouse wheel" function of the touchpad is broken (looks like the drivers are missing, but I can live with that for now)
    Additional details
As I mentioned above I've had this laptop for 4-5 years and it always worked properly without major glitches. Then one day windows suddenly failed to start without reason, although on rare occasions I was able to log in after a very long boot (which suggests to me that it might not be completely broken but just took forever to start up windows), but then it would also fail to shut down (hanged forever at the "windows is shutting down" screen.
Thinking back, the laptop did on rare occasions fail to start windows, but would always start the next time and never failed to shut down as far as I remember. Lately I also noticed freezing on some occasions, which at that time I thought might be related to the DVD because they seemed to happened only when the DVD was in use.
After many unsucessful attempts to recover the current system I reinstalled windows 7, and now windows is more or less running, but with the symptoms described above.
I've run chkdsk /F /R /B, sfc /scannow, and windows memory diagnostic multiple times, as well as several lenovo diagnostic tools (CPU, memory, optical, graphics and perhaps a couple of others); none of them returned any error (1 bad sector added to list by chkdsk last time it ran).
    Questions
        Any suggestions/feedback?
At this point, is there a chance it could help to reformat the entire drive and reinstall windows?
In particular, I'm not sure why I need the recovery partition if I (1) it doesn't work and (2) I have an installation CD for the OS anyway.
Also, would it safe to remove the SERVICEV003 partition?
I've read somewhere that to restore to factory state you need to mark the recovery partition as "active" - is this true, and could it be the reason that rescue&recovery environment does not start?
Is it any use updating the BIOS at this point?
Also, is there any chance that playing around with the BIOS config could result in a working configuration?
If the problem is a hardware problem, how can I figure out which is the faulty component?
Is it possible to completely disable, e.g., the DVD drive, without physically unplugging it (BIOS doesn't seem to allow this, and even though uninstalling it in windows seemed to fix the shutdown problem, I know that the DVD is still working because e.g. I can boot from it).
Is there a way to completely disable one of the graphics card to check whether problem could come from it?
I've been considering pulling out the HD and memory to check if there is any misconnection/dirty connector. Is is even worth trying (I usually try refrain as much as possible from messing with laptop's inside) ?
I will update if I remember anything important or if there is any major new development.
Thanks in advance for your help!

137 attempted reallocations with 6 currently pending. Your drive is probably on its way out.
Back-up your data immediately. You could try running SpinRite or HDD Regenerator on the drive to try and fix it, but chances are you should just replace it.
