Why am I losing memory and songs?

After some recent music downloads from Amazon, some of the songs were skipping. I deleted and reloaded the songs. When I played them, the ipod classic 160 gb crashed with Apple logo coming up. After clearing, the ipod showed no music but full memory of the 10600 songs. I copied the Ipod's music folder to a backup drive. After restoring the Ipod, I loaded the music folder from the backup drive to my Windows 7 based ITunes library. All 10600 songs restored to the Ipod. However, I noticed scattered artwork missing while playing even though the Ipod files showed the artwork in the info section. Now after one week and no syncs to Itunes, I have lost 2300 songs and the equivalent memory. What is going on? (Virus? Firmware? Corruption?) Anybody seen anything like this?

OK, so it's solved.
Whatever you download goes (if all defaults are set) to the Downloads folder in your user profile.
Depending on the file type and software settings a copy CAN be made without it being obvious to the user.
For example if you download an mp3 file (of your friend's band playing in their garage), it will go to Downloads. If you click on it and it opens in iTunes, a copy of that file will be put into the itunes library - making it two copies of the same file. If you then delete it form the Downloads the iTunes copy stays on your HD until you delete it (best way would be to do it through iTunes).
Same with some video files, if played through itunes, a copy will be made. QT will not make a copy as it doesn't use the "library" concept.
Images and some video - if imported to iPhoto - again, a copy will be put into the library.
Also remember that if you drag any files between volumes, the default action is COPY.
If a file is locked, even if you drag from a folder to another - the default action is COPY as well.
What happened in your case, I don't know, but all is well it would seem.
And one more thing (a bit off topic, but worth knowing)...
If you delete a file from a flash drive, you must empty the trash while the drive is plugged in, otherwise it will re-apear in trash every time you plug the drive in.

  • OS 10.9.2 upgrade - then constantly losing memory - and finally resolved it...

A few days ago, I upgraded to OS 10.9.2 (2011 17" 4-core i7 250GB SSD MBP) - and the following day noticed a dramatic drop in available HD memory.  I use FreeSpace to monitor my various HDs and only saw the issue when its value appeared red (<20%) in my upper icons.  Started dumping unwanted files (it was time for a clear-out!), but the available space still continued to fall.  That made no sense.  Closing down apps made no difference.  With nothing open, the memory level still continued to steadily drop.
Took it in to the Genius Bar the next day, where they re-installed 10.9.2 and sent me home to "see what happens now..."  Did a re-install using Time Machine (Migration Assistant).  Initially, all seemed fine, and then the available memory space started dropping again.  I turned off all apps, to see what would happen, but this issue continued.  Time Machine kept sending an error, as now did DuperDuper! which I use as a second back-up app (yes, I'm anal about backing up).  These responses were new.  Patently, something was seriously amiss.
Last night, I went to turn Time Machine off, not wanting or needing its error messages any longer - I had another appointment lined up at the Genius Bar for this morning, to try and resolve this losing-memory issue.  All apps were closed down.  It was only a minute or so after turning Time Machine off in System Preferences that I saw the FreeSpace indicator change from red to black and the available memory space spin back up to where it should be in less than a minute - an upward jump of around 50GB, for no apparent reason.  I turned Time Machine back on - just in case! - but nothing changed.  Memory level still back in the black.  It has remained so overnight and still sits there, as it used to.
So! - just putting this out there as a situational report, in case it can help anyone else.  I am not "techie" enough to know what happened or why - just sharing what I observed.  If it helps one other person, then that's good!!
    Happy Days!!

Thanks indeed for that fast response!!
Time Machine is still creating its first backup after I re-partitioned one of my external HDs last night, to give everything more space (another 8 hours to go, I gather), so I've yet to see what happens when it begins taking those "snapshots" again.  At least now I know where to look, to see what is taking up the space!
I also read a thread where the snapshots can be turned off using Terminal, and that may be a future option if TM is the actual culprit, as it appears.
Again, my thanks for your prompt response and advice.  Greatly appreciated.

why is the memory going down so fast? now it is at 155GB and i only had it for a month and i don't have much in it maybe like 400 songs, but thats just like 3GB of memory. I have downloaded programs but I have uninstall them and it does not even give me back the GB Ive lost. why does it go down so fast and can i fix it?

Not an expert but the one explanation I can come up with is that the space is lost to System restore. this is a part of Windows and it generaly activates its self when you satrt the computer. It can chew up to 15% acording to the windows help file of a HDD space which accounts for alot on your drive. remember that the 250GB drive is usually split in two parts. One is your C: partition and the other is a D: partitio (generally this is the recovery partition) to shut off system restore and get some space back you can do the following:
    go to Control panel.
    Double click the System icon
In the left pane, click System Protection. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
To turn off System Protection for a hard disk, clear the check box next to the disk, and then click OK
Reply back if this worked and if you see any increse in memory.

  • Why aren't my artists and songs in alphabetical order?

I have Apple iPod Touch Gen 4~
This is what my Artist list looks like and my song list isn't any better. It's not a major problem but it's quite irritating.
I've seen solutions like reset your iPod but they said it was only a temporary solution.
    Anyone have a good solution?

Your image files are pointing to your hard drive, not your server.  You have this
    background-image: url(file:///Macintosh%20HD/Users/jimmymoreira/Unnamed%20Site%204/imag es/opaqueMaincontent.png);
    and you should have this
    background-image: url(imag es/opaqueMaincontent.png);
Also, is your images file named imag es?

  • Why am I losing memory after I delete a file?

I have a Macbook Pro and it runs OS X 10.5. I downloaded a torrent movie the other day put it on a flashdrive and deleted all associated files and I still lost 2+ GB of memory. How is this possible and how do I fix it? I dont think I should lose that much space after I delete a downloaded file otherwise whats the point of deleting. My flash drive is a Geek Squad 16 GB with no U3 technology. Please help as this is uber frustrating!

  • Losing memory and I don't know where its going.....

    Hi everyone~
So I'm on my tx-1274dx and I cant seem to find out where my memory is going. I've done disk defragments, disk clean ups, cleared my trash bin, deleted files, restarted, shut down and rebooted, and nothing seems to work. Am I the only one with this problem? Anyone else experienced this problem? Please help >.< I'm at wits ends trying to find out where and how the memory keeps disappearing if this keeps up I'm going to be forced to reboot the whole system to recover memory. Please help me!

I can't select it .. I click on it and nothing happens. The only thing I seem to be able to do is a two fingered click which brings up a context menu for the side bar preferences..but unfortunately this icon does not appear in the list.

  • Consistently losing memory and problems with backups?! Help!!

Hi all. My iPhone 5 (32gb, thankfully) started to randomly lose a lot of its memory, every other week i would maybe see some of this also randomly return until it got worse. It used to go, return with desperate attempts (restarts and memory the filling method) and would just disappear within a minute. I deleted small things to make space and they'd go within a week or so too! Then it got REAL bad, i would delete things and the memory would disappear within seconds, which scared me a lot (maybe the flash memory's lost it and can't read/write so good any more?) so i deleted a 1.9GB game which bought me some time as the memory was only slowly being taken away this time, but it was shocking to see all of that go too, slowly (1.8, 1.7, 1.6 and so forth). I googled desperately and found a 'solution' for this and it WORKED! (Renamed a few files.) I managed to stop the memory being consumed and i was left with just under 1GB - but I've lost about 3GB or more in total (and maybe more that I've not kept count of).
Problem now is that i can't get any of that back and i cannot buy the new iPhone 6 unless i have a way of shifting all my data to the new device. If i simply 'restore from backup' on the new iPhone, this deficit in memory would possibly carry over (i think).
Another issue with backups is that they also carry other little bugs over from previous devices. For example, my old iPhone 4 randomly started showing 2 dark purple-near black artifacts/specs on every photo and video and i thought it was the camera itself. When i got the iPhone 5 2 years ago and carried over the 4's backup, the iPhone 5's camera had these same specs in the same places!
Because of these weird issues I'm laying off buying a new iPhone until i either find a way to migrate my data to the new device OR i can find a way to reclaim my lost memory at the least even if that means keeping the weird camera problem!
Has anyone had any of these issues or combination of issues? Is there a way to fix all this? Is there a way to transfer all my data without having iTunes carry over the bugs?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Zephryl,
I was actually able to get an initial response from Sun on this a few months ago. However, the Sun Swing team has not followed up on a resolution for this pervasive problem, even though they noticed the same problem when running a test applet I had created for them. Apparently, I.E. is not releasing memory from the heap.
Below is a quote from a Sun rep. on this in an e-mail sent to me on Dec 4, 2002:
"I suspected the leak is in the native code because the # of handles and GDI objects keep increasing but no obvious Java objects are left behind in the Java heap during page switch."
So, until Sun and/or Microsoft work out a solution to this, anyone who uses I.E. 6 and applets for their UI seems to be in a lot of trouble.
As a note, trying to invoke the Garbage Collector does not do anything, but generally a very small amount of memory will be released (like maybe 5-10% of the memory allocated for the applet).
    Cheers!

  • Why do I have to download songs/albums onto my iphone when I have icloud and purchased the songs from itunes?, Why do I have to download songs/albums onto my iphone when I have icloud and purchased the songs from itunes?

Why do I have to download songs/albums onto my iphone when I have icloud and purchased the songs from itunes? I thought the purpose of purchasing from itunes when you have icloud is that you don't have to download each song/album that you want to hear.  I get like 5-10 songs from the last two albums i have downloaded, but not the entire album.

Are you talking about iTunes Match?  If so, you don't have to download entire albums, all you have to do is play the songs you want to hear.
If you're asking why you have to download the music at all rather than just playing it from iCloud, the music has to be stored locally on your device, either in permanent or cache memory, in order for your device to play it.

(Note, mine says 28 days because I have been waiting for a fair bit for this to go away.)

You can't keep changing the ID you use with iTunes, you are limited to once every 90 days.

  • HT1267 i've got about 2500 songs on my iphone, i have replaced my computer & lost my library-question is why can't i drag/drop new downloaded music to my iphone without 'syncing' & losing my 2500 songs from the iphone?

I've got about 2500 songs on my iphone, i have recently replaced my computer because the old one crashed, so i lost all the songs in the itunes library. My question is, it seems that now i am unable to drag/drop new downloaded songs without syncing my iphone & losing my 2500 songs from the phone?

You cannot. Iphone will sync/manually manage music with one and only one computer at a time.  Syncing/manually managing with another will erase the current content from the iphone.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.

Got answer here:  http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1450821 from zblaze.
Wiped phone completely, restored as NEW iphone through itunes.  Checked 'Sync all Music'.
After that happens you can restore from backup.
