Why am I losing my Time Capsule connection?

I keep getting this message every so often:
Then I say, "use disk" and I get this message"
So I can no longer rely on Time Machine to be backing up, which makes the whole excercise useless.  This is connected by ethernet, by the way, not wifi.  Also, the backup disk is connected by USB to the Time Capsule.  Any idea what to do to fix this and avoid it in future?  Previously it was all working just dandy, so not sure why this has cropped up now.

If it's true that external is the issue, then wonder why it worked just fine for months.
So do I believe me.
A 500GB TC is old.. and is near EOL unless you have replaced its power supply.
When you attempt to backup does the external drive spin up?? If not, force it to spin up by disconnecting and reconnecting it. If it works once spinning but fails the next time.. use a powered usb hub.. I can promise you the power supply in the TC will be on its last legs. If it still fails to spin up.. there is either a fault in the external drive.. that also happens.. plug the external into the computer and test it or the TC can no longer sustain the load.
It also could be firmware.. if you recently upgraded a Gen1 TC to 7.6.4 downgrade it to 7.5.2 as it is hugely more reliable on those old models.
If you are hard wiring to the TC to do backups to an external drive.. you may be pleasantly surprised to realise the same backup to the USB drive plugged directly into your computer will go at between 2-4times the speed. In fact even USB2 disk on the computer is faster for backup than the internal disk in the TC.
It is also hugely more reliable.

  • Time Capsule Connection Help Needed (Flashing Amber)

    Guys,
I've been trying to troubleshoot my Time Capsule connection for a week now and I have had zero luck.
I have a Imac with OSX 10.6.8  that uses AirPort v 5.6.1.  I have a Cat-5 (ethernet cable) plugged from my Time Capsule port (looks like this <-->) into an available port in my cable mode/router.  My Imac is also plugged into this router.  The two cat-5 (ethernet) cables are side by side.
    So....
Every time I plug in the Time Capsule I get the following prompt via AirPort.
AirPort Utility found a Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Generation) that is
    reporting problems.
Time Capsule's Name :  My Capsule
              IP Address: 10.0.1.1
              Versino: 7.6.1
              AirPort ID: 12:88:93:CC:FF:72
If this is not the AirPort wireless devise you want to setup you can select another from the list on the left. If you don't see it make sure.... Blah blah blah....
To make a long story tollerable I do see my Time Capsule on the left at the top. Its the only one and its selected by default.  So I do the next logical thing right?  I click "Continue" and AirPort reads the Time Capsule's configuration.... and then...... I get the error
An error occurred while reading the configuration.
Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is plugged
in and in range of your computer or connected via
    Ethernet and try again. (-6753)
Can anyone help me understand why I can grab the Time Capsule's IP Address but AirPort can not read the hardware's (Time Capsule) config?
    I'm at a loss.
Could my ethernet cable be the issue?

    Hackintosh,
Thanks man... Yes, I plugged it into the circle symbol with no joy.  I also went to Wal Mart and baught a new seven foot cat-5 for $10.  Again I still have the flashing amber light.
After plugging in the ethernet cable into the circle icon port AirPort returns the following prompt.
I reset the TC (ball point pen to the reset hole untill fast blinking amber light occurs) and entered the needed params and it returns this error.
An error occured close the configuation window and try again.
It must be a config parameter that I'm setting incorrectly. There's a bunch so who knows what I'm doing wrong.
I just need the to talk to my Imac so i can get a backup executed. A wireless connection will take too long.
FYI: The cat-5 is brand new and is 100% functional (green light on the TC and router.)

  • Time capsule connectivity

I currently have three computers, two iPhones, an iPad and an apple tv connected through my time capsule. They work great 90% of the time but I noticed that whenever an extra device or two connect to the time capsule one of the other devices can not connect. Does anyone know why? I beleive the time capsule can support up to 50 devices, is this true? Or are their settings I need to adjust.
    Thank you

I don't know this is uniquely TC problem.. all wireless routers suffer this, as different items, even with apple have different wireless chipsets and behave differently for which there is nought you can do.
Set the TC with fixed channels and different ssid (wireless name) on both 2.4 and 5ghz. It can also help if you lock things, like using G only on 2.4ghz.. and stick with N only on 5ghz. I am not sure how much control TC allows. Not much looking at mine. In the end you might just need to buy another wireless device.. an Airport Express to offload some of the nasty devices that don't share nicely.

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

could you guide me to a software i can use????

The best software to do what you want, is not on a Mac. It is a router.. gargoyle.
You can keep using the TC as wifi source but get a router that can can take gargoyle firmware.. the best in my testing is netgear WNDR3700. Gargoyle itself is a free download.
    http://www.gargoyle-router.com/download.php
There are other routers and router boards it will work on.. but make sure you pick something compatible. I have used several different routers and the one above is the best so far.

  • Why won't my Time Capsule connect the internet to my computer

Recently moved office.  Disconnected time capsule from modem from prior office which worked fine.  Connected to new modem and won't work.  Computer shows capsule connected but won't connect internet

Always start with a full factory reset and redo the setup.. The TC remembers too much of its previous setup.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • Time Capsule connection

    Hi all
My Mac Pro is currently hardwired into a router for internet access. I have a Time Capsule that I want to use for backup but also as a wifi point for an iPad or Macbook but not as wireless internet access for my Mac Pro (my main computer). I have tried setting up all kinds of networks but just can't seem to get it to work, subsequently the Time Capsule is just a piece of desk jewellery (and I've had it since they first came out a few years ago)
Is it possible to have the Time Capsule set up in this way, hardwired for internet and backup on one computer but wireless access point for others? I'm not even sure where I'd plug my router into, the Mac Pro or Time Capsule!
I'm not up to speed with networking so any help I get would be appreciated.
    Thanks all

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Try this: Connect the Time Capsule to the router with an Ethernet cable into the Time Capsule's WAN port. Connect another Ethernet cable between one of your Macs and a LAN port of the Time Capsule. Launch AirPort Utility. You should see the Time Capsule on the left. Select it and click "Manual Setup". In the AirPort panel, Time Capsule tab, give the Time Capsule a name and password. In the AirPort panel, Wireless tab, set "Wireless Mode" to "Create a wireless network". Fill in the rest of the fields of that panel. In the Internet panel, Internet Connection tab, set "Connection Sharing" to "Off (Bridge Mode)". Click "Update". Once the Time Capsule restarts is its status light green? If so see if you can connect to it wirelessly. If the status light is amber, use the Summary panel of AirPort Utility to investigate why it's not happy.

  • Finder Time Capsule connection problem

On a client's brand new iMac, I clicked on the Time Capsule in Finder and clicked "Connect". It failed, and the console gave the following error:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[268]
    SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 45
I tested this on 3 other Macs on the same network, and they all worked fine connecting to the same Time Capsule, so this is system specific. I created a new user account, and it still didn't work. I checked the iMac's connectivity to the network, and it was fine. I tried creating a new network location, no go.
I'm out of ideas and my client is anxiously awaiting a functional backup system. Anybody else come across this issue? Any ideas? Thanks!

Never figured out why this happened, but an Archive and Install of Leopard, fixed it.

  • Why doesn't the new time capsule have a thunderbolt port?

it seems absurd apple wouldn't have put a thunderbolt port on the new time capsule.....what am I missing here?

It is a network device.. there is no local connection.. and never has been. Thunderbolt chipsets are super expensive still.. which is why the cheapest external thunderbolt drives are still far more expensive than USB3.
If you put a thunderbolt into the TC it is then a local drive and no internet connection.

  • Time Capsule connection quality

    Hi everybody,
I have a 3rd generation Time Capsule. It works perfectly connected to my modem.
But when I use AirPort Utility on iOS, it shows me that the connection is "good" and not "excellent".
The Time Capsule is connected via ethernet, the speed is 100 Mb/s, the max speed is 1.000 Mb/s and it's full-duplex.
Can you explain me why it's "good" and not "excellent"?
    Thank you very much
    Angelo

I think that the "excelent & good" values are related to your wifi connection strenght, not the state of your WAN connection...
    Just a tought!
    Props.

  • HT4260 Airport extreme and time capsule connection order in a roaming network

I plan to create a roaming network with my current Airport Extreme as the primary device connected to the internet and the new Time Capsule as the secondary device in Bridge mode. The connection between AE and TC will be wired (ethernet). Then I plan to connect the PC that needs backing up to the Time Capsule with an ethernet cable. Apart from the PC-backup functionality, I'd like to use the Time Capsule as a central NAS-device in my network. All other wired network devices that need access to the NAS (Apple TV, Xtreamer) are currently connected to the primary Airport Extreme with ethernet cables. My question: is there any reason why I should consider reversing the setup order, i.e. making the Time Capsule the primary device connected to the internet and the Airport Extreme the secondary device? Would this have a positive or negative effect on Time Capsule functionality and performance in the network? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Your Gen3 Extreme and all TC are gigabit.. as long as you connect with the required standard cable to have a gigabit connection between the two, there will effectively be no difference. In a home network you will struggle to saturate gigabit no matter what you do. Although the difference between the two configurations is really very small.
General rule is keep whatever is using the highest bandwidth closest and directly connected to whatever it is using.. shrug.. in this case you can follow or not.. it is more a guideline.

  • Can Connect to Printer through ethernet network cable, but not through Time Capsule connected to ethernet

I am a lone Mac user in a very large, unsympathetic institution.  If I plug my MacBook Air into the ethernet cable in my office directly, I can print through the office printer.  If I plug the ethernet cable into a Time Capsule and connect my Air to the capsule wirelessly I cannot print to the office printer.  I can access the internet, so I know it isn't a problem with any of the hardware or the wireless connection.
Is it possible that the network, because of Time Capsule, shuffles me into a different subnet than the printer?  Why would it do this?  How would it know?  Is there any kind of fix possible?  (I use the Thunderbolt port to connect my Air to a monitor, so I can't use it to connect to an ethernet cable).
    Thanks.

Thank-you very much for this.  How do I tell if it is in routher and bridge?  How do I change it?
Tell me the IP address when you plug into the main network and can print..
Tell me the IP address when you connect wirelessly via the TC.
If they are the same IP range.. then you are on a bridged TC.. if they are different. Then you are on router mode TC and should bridge it.

  • Loss of Time Capsule connection to MacPro & MacPro Book.

My new Time Capsule is connected to a Mac Pro and MacPro Laptop all running latest OS.
After 2 months of correct back up performance both computers now fail to detect the back up drive. I must un plug the Time Capsule and de power it and the TP=Link modem, re boot both and await and then the computers will descorver the back up drive. They will do a regular back up for one or two hour cycles and then lose the path to the drive again.  To make a back up the process must be repeated.  Is the Time Capsule / Air Port defective and must be returned to Apple, or is there a fix to this annyoying problem.

What is amazing is not that you are having problems.. but how you managed to have it working for 2months without issues.. that is amazing.
Yosemite is a dog... total network dog.
Many people have the problem .. it is not likely to be the modem or the TC itself.. although it seems the combo of the TC and Yosemite is not a happy one.
Is the TC main network router or bridged??
If you are running PPPOE the Apple router may not be reliable so I need that info as well.
Here is the typical response I give.. since this is common issue.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the laptop itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore

  • IPhone + Time Capsule Connection

Hi there. I have a weird question. I recently upgraded my iPhone 1st gen to the 3GS. Both connect fine to my wireless network. However, I have also decided to reset my wireless router settings and start over. I also limit access to certain MAC addresses only.
Neither of my iPhones MAC address are part of my allowed list, yet they both can connect to my network on my Time Capsule.
Does anyone know why that would be? Thanks.

Anyone seen this before? Thanks. I even gave my new network a new name.

  • Time Capsule connection is slow.

I want to connect both my iMac and a windows PC laptop to the TC. The PC needs to connect via wireless, however the iMac is sitting close enough to connect via cable. When I use the TC to join a wireless network, both computers can connect, however file transfer between the TC and iMac or PC is extremely slow. I have tried connecting the TC to the iMac with a cat 5 cable and transfer is ok (still not the fastest) however the PC can not find the TC over the wireless network. Any sugestions? I thought connecting the TC via cable to my Belkin router to exend the wireless network would help, however this does not seem to work at all.
    Thanks

    Hello Bob,
Excuse me jumping in here (first time I've posted on any discussion) but I am trying to understand what is wrong with my Time Capsule set up. With limited technical knowledge I usually find the newer Apple products easy to install and use, but since buying a TC this week (2TB) to back up my MacBook Pro at home I am not finding enough information in the install guide to assist. I have approx 400 gb to back up, have excluded several items now to reduce it to 230 GB but it is still so slow via wireless that it is going to take at least 3 or 4 days to run the first back up. I understood that the first back up takes longer than usual, so connected an ethernet cable to hopefully make it faster. I am not convinced that the cable is even making any difference and now reading your comment below, am thinking I have to disconnect from the wireless connection so that the Ethernet works. IS this correct? I then assume I have to go back in after the first back up and re-set it to connect wirelessly?
When the TC is configured to "join a wireless network", the device performs no routing functions, so the Ethernet ports are disabled. All backups occur over wireless only, (even if you have an Ethernet cable connected)
To be honest I am not questioning myself as to why I bought the TC as I do not need it for any wireless connection (we already have a fast wireless service in the house) but just want to regularly back up my work on this MacBook.
    thank you.
