Why am I losing saturation?

I know this topic has cropped up before but I haven’t found an explanation of or solution to my particular problem.  I have a Dell wide-gamut monitor (U2713H) which has two calibration settings (using i1Display Pro), Adobe RGB and SRGB. Normally I process the RAW files in PS (CS6) then continue in Photoshop using Adobe colour space. Then I save the Adobe RGB file, but I also convert to SRGB colour profile for files I want to upload to flickr or send to friends. Occasionally I’m happy with the original jpg image embedded in the camera RAW file and may just want to crop it. This is when I get the problem. Jpg images with heavily saturated colours, saved in PS with no colour adjustment, merely cropping, lose their saturation and contrast, compared to the original. Oddly, if I view both files on a standard laptop monitor I see no difference. I realize that a wide-gamut monitor, even when set to SRGB, may not display the same as a standard monitor, but why should the colours in the cropped picture look different from the original, viewing both on the same screen. It’s almost as if the original (produced by a Canon 600D) is not tagged with an accurate SRGB profile and thus it gets corrected by Photoshop during saving. The only way I can get the pictures looking the same is to convert to monitor profile or to tell PS not to colour manage when I crop the picture, but then the saved picture has no embedded profile, which is not satisfactory. I’m running Windows 7 in 64 bit mode.
Until I understand what is going on I cannot be sure that any Adobe RGB images converted to SRGB profile will look right on someone else’s standard monitor.

In reply to 'twenty-one's' first point the file has an embedded srgb profile. If it didn't, when loaded into Photoshop, the latter would alert me that the file has a missing profile. Re point 3, I don't know whether my picture viewer is a colour-managed application. I use Irfan picture viewer.
In reply to Rob Day, I've followed all the recommended procedures in calibrating the monitor using i1 Display Pro. I don't make any adjustments in the system control panel. The DellU2713H has several factory-set calibrations, including SRGB and AdobeRGB. In addition there are two custom settings, CAL1 and CAL2, which can be used to make individual profiles using the i1 Display Pro callibration device. When individually callibrated to Adobe gamma there is no noticeable difference compared to Dell's factory setting, but when callibrating the second CAL to SRGB there is a noticeable difference when compared to Dell's factory callibration. This is not altogether surprising given comments I read in one very analytical review.
As I said earlier, the problem seems to have been related to the faulty motherboard. I notice that if I load the two pictures (the original and a saved Photoshop copy with no adjustments) into Photoshop there are very minute differences in the histograms. Now these don't affect the appearance of the pictures, either in PS or when viewed in a picture viewer, but perhaps previously the faulty motherboard was magnifying the minute differences for some reason. I'm not a computer expert so I've no idea whether this is a plausible explanation or not.
Thanks again to all for comments and suggestions.

  • Losing saturation when exporting from 1.3

    Hello!
I need some help. I just started noticing that when I export my jpegs from Lightroom that I am losing saturation in my images. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to change my settings to something else?
Is anyone else having this problem?
    I am exporting as RGB.
    Thanks!
    Jen

    Chaps,
I'm with Jao on this one.
    Here's how it is:
    |----------------------| ProPhoto Gamut
    |-------------------| Camera Gamut
    |----------------| Monitor Gamut
If you're in control of your colour management, you are exporting a ProPhoto file and then transforming it to sRGB:
    |----------------------| ProPhoto Gamut
    |                |  ^
    |                |  |_ "Clipped" data lost in transform
    |                |
    |----------------| sRGB Gamut
In this case "80% ProPhoto red" maps to "100% sRGB red" and the picture looks right, although it may be clipped. You can't see this clipping on the monitor though. The monitor can't tell the difference between "80% ProPhoto red" and "100% ProPhoto red". You understand I'm making it up with my "80%" and "100%", that's why they're in quotes.
If you're not in control of your colour management, you are exporting a ProPhoto file and then assigning sRGB to it:
    |----------------------| ProPhoto Gamut
    |                     /
    |                    /
    |                   /   <- Squeeze down assigning sRGB to ProPhoto pic
    |                  /
    |                 /
    |                /
    |----------------| sRGB Gamut
That produces exactly the symptoms you describe. Something that was "80% red" in ProPhoto should map to something "100% red" in sRGB as described above. With bad colour management, one maps "80% ProPhoto red" to "80% sRGB red" and they look nothing like each other.
    Note that so-called
color stupid applications - like Preview on Windows, for example - do exactly that.
However, both Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom are not color stupid.
I can easily force CS3 into doing it by a) not embedding the colour space when I save the file and/or b) "applying" a profile instead of "converting to" a profile.
Lightroom does neither of these things by default on my machine.
    Your mileage may vary.

PS I don't work for Adobe.

  • CS4 to Fireworks: Losing saturation & contrast

Any idea why? Pulling up the same image I processed in PS, loses a lot of impact when I view the same image in Fireworks. Subsequently working the image in FW and pulling it back up in PS is remains a duller, less saturated version of my PS creation. Any ideas?   Is there a colorspace compatibility issue?  I have my CS4 set to sRGB.
Thanks very much for any thoughts or suggestions.

    Nick, you got it.
FYI....the reason North America General Purpse 2 works is that it sets the standard RGB working space in Photoshop to sRGB.  Since sRGB is generally what the web expects to see, you don't see any change in brightness, saturation or color in your image when you bring it into Fireworks or post it on the web.  It's already in the right color space.  So the moral of the story is to make sure you image is saved as an sRGB image.
IF you are working in a different RGB color space in Photoshop, such as Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB, Then CONVERT to sRGB when you are done editing.  Then, you can open your sRGB file in Fireworks or post to the web without any issues.
If you want to save your images in JPG format, you need to have an 8-bit file.  JPG is not an option if working in 16 bit.  Besides, merely for web display, there is no reason for 16 bit images.  They are double the size too.  If you were working in 16 bit, no problem....just use Image > Mode > 8bit before you save the file.
Lots of ways to get there, but you want an sRGB, 8-bit image when all is said and done.

  • RAW images losing saturation while my JPegs keep the saturation

i had a PC and now a brand new IMac 4K 27 inch computer. Both computers are showing the same issue. When i shoot in RAW format when i go to look at them in lightroom or a basic PC windows viewer the pic uploads in normal color and then turns to a gray tone. This only happens with RAW pics which lose the saturation and jPegs hold the saturation. I looked at some data and the gray amount in the histogram part of the picture dominates and other colors like greens reds blues yellows etc. barely show any amounts on histogram. Any thoughts?

Take a look at the red on the engine how it goes from a nice candy apple to dull. Top is before and below is after. I took a screen shot after seeing this happen to many many photos before. It is almost like it processes the photo how it sees fit and looking at the images and how much saturation and color they use i cant imagine why it would do that. The reason why the histogram graph doesn't show anything info in the graph/chart is it is still loading the image and then you can see the results in the second pictures histogram graph/chart once the image has loaded. Once i initially upload this into Lightroom or windows view etc it never goes back to the original great looking color picture it stay in the gray dull look
a few more RAWS to compare and see the issue
now you can compare these above which are RAWs to the JPEG below which doesnt change once uploaded and has a much more colorful historgram

  • Why am I losing ambient sound?

    Hello,
I've read the messages in this forum and saw one or two that sound like my problem, but there were no follow up answers.
    THE PROBLEM:
I try to make little movies on an iMac 10.4.8, running iDVD 4. I successfully burned one project to DVD from iDVD, but when I tried to burn a different project to DVD from iDVD (right after the first one), I lost ambient sound (sound on the movie clip). It played for the first 10 seconds, dropped out, came back about midway through the project for another 10 seconds, then that was it. The added music track runs flawlessly. My projects run about 3 minutes each.
    THE PROCEDURES:
    1. Open iMovie project in iDVD (I do not export from iMovie)
    2. Play back project in iDVD (check ride)
    2. Burn to DVD from iDVD
I've never had a problem with ambient sound in iMovie or iDVD. The added music tracks in my projects are perfect, even on the miscreant project in DVD.
Did I mention I have no idea how to create a disk image to burn a DVD from disk utility? I read the directions, and they scare the heck out of me.
Thanks for any help or insights from anyone! Maybe I should just scrap the thing and start over again?
Thanks again, and Happy New Year!

    Aha!
I may be my own culprit! I find I am now able to burn to DVD successfully from iDVD without losing ambient sound. Why? I read the directions. Second, even though I read the directions, I also used a different theme when burning.

  • Upgraded to ios 7.1 battery drain is significant and have lost my calendar events. how do i get my events back and why am i losing so much power now?

how do i get my calendar events back and why the power drain after upgrading my operating system to 7.1?

Thought I'd reply to this seen as no one else has, I am also experiencing very similar problems with my 4s and by the looks of it is it's across all handsets. I've never had any battery issues with my iPhone even 7.0.6 was fine, but since updating to 7.1 the battery is ticking down very fast. I fully charged in the morning and left it in my locker all day at work when I got my hands on it it's gone down to 52% just on its own!!
I really hope they sort this out fast the irony is 7.1 was supposed to help battery life!

  • Why am I losing my Time Capsule connection?

I keep getting this message every so often:
Then I say, "use disk" and I get this message"
So I can no longer rely on Time Machine to be backing up, which makes the whole excercise useless.  This is connected by ethernet, by the way, not wifi.  Also, the backup disk is connected by USB to the Time Capsule.  Any idea what to do to fix this and avoid it in future?  Previously it was all working just dandy, so not sure why this has cropped up now.

If it's true that external is the issue, then wonder why it worked just fine for months.
    So do I believe me.
A 500GB TC is old.. and is near EOL unless you have replaced its power supply.
When you attempt to backup does the external drive spin up?? If not, force it to spin up by disconnecting and reconnecting it. If it works once spinning but fails the next time.. use a powered usb hub.. I can promise you the power supply in the TC will be on its last legs. If it still fails to spin up.. there is either a fault in the external drive.. that also happens.. plug the external into the computer and test it or the TC can no longer sustain the load.
It also could be firmware.. if you recently upgraded a Gen1 TC to 7.6.4 downgrade it to 7.5.2 as it is hugely more reliable on those old models.
If you are hard wiring to the TC to do backups to an external drive.. you may be pleasantly surprised to realise the same backup to the USB drive plugged directly into your computer will go at between 2-4times the speed. In fact even USB2 disk on the computer is faster for backup than the internal disk in the TC.
It is also hugely more reliable.

  • Why doI keep losing firefox after I update?

Every time I update Firefox I keep getting a message telling me" I am running an old version and need to update". After Firefox loads, the rest of the info doesn't come up, like,"click run", only the"click save" comes up. So, I would guess it isn't completing the update. Why is this happening? I'm still running the old version.

Check that you do not run Firefox in compatibility mode or with a reduced screen resolution.
You can check that in the "Compatibility" tab in the Properties via the right-click context menu of the Firefox desktop shortcut.
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.

  • Why am I losing crop when exporting from LR (?)

Hi. I'm a newbie to LR and am stumped trying to figure something out (Yes, I've checked all through the forums).  I've made some adjustments to a bunch of photos in LR3--contrast, brightness, etc.  I've also cropped them to 5x7s.  When I export as a JPEG to a separate folder on my Mac, or when I choose to edit in Photoshop using the "Edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments" command, the photos show up with all the LR adjustments... EXCEPT for the crop.  The photos are showing up in the Mac folder and in Photoshop as their original photo size, i.e. their size when I imported them into LR from my card.
What am I missing or doing wrong?  When I export the photos, why aren't they showing up in a separate location or in Photoshop with the 5x7 crop that I performed in LR3?
thanks in advance .. this is driving me nuts.

I think more information is needed...  Can you post a screen shot from LR and PS showing the crop differences?
As the previous poster said, size is not an issue here, don't worry that your 5"x7" crop comes out as 20x28" in PS, if that is your issue.
That said, however, if you've cropped an image, when you export it the image should look the same.  Printing can be different, though, depending on how you are printing.  So let's stick with export/crop to start with!
Please post a couple of sceen shots, one showing LR and the crop you picked, and then one in PS after "edit in PS with LR adustments" done.
    Cheers!

  • Why am I losing disc space for no apparent reason?

The past few days, I have been losing disc space and haven't been adding anything.
I was at about 10 GB free, and suddenly my computer was telling me that I had 0. I freed up 2 more GB, and a few minutes later it was down to 371 MB, then 100 MB, then 0 (within the span about 15 minutes). I repeated this process, and about the same thing happened.
I've deleted about half of my iPhoto library, a large portion of iTunes, deleted Safari caches, and most documents. I even did scans with Grand Perspective, and it only shows about 40 GB taken up. I should have at least 34 GB open, and yet somehow that is not the case.
Even in the past hour, I deleted 500 songs, and my space has gone down. HELP ME!

First thing I suggest is be sure you emptied your trash after all the deleting.
I use WhatSize to check space on my drive.
Disk Inventory X is also good for this.
The X Lab: Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk has some good information on what to look for when cleaning your drive.

  • Why such poor quality saturation and contrast with NEFs?

Having used Lightroom since the beginning, I'm at my wits end.
Ever since Lightroom 1, I've noticed that ACR does a really -really, bad job handeling NEFs when you push contrast and saturation, especially in regards to certain colors (reds, yellows, and blues).
I thought for a long time it was my side, originally using a consumer DSLR (D50), but it affects every NEF I've ever imported, from any Nikon body up to D4.
The saturation gets chunky with little effort (even after attempting to correct via the Calibration panel), the same when pushing contrast. Not pushing it beyond the files' limits, just a simple s-curve.
When importing other RAW formats, this is less often the case.
It's really frustrating to be able to rely on Lightroom doing and adequate job 75% of the time, and it makes me look bad in front of clients.
Has/ does anyone else run into this? Does anyone have any ideas, or tips as to avoiding this?
I really hate the UI of C1, but since it has started implementing cataloging I am getting more and more enticed to switch over completely, as even when I push things waaay too contrasty or overly saturated the results are still miles better.
I'm an unabashed Adobe fanboy with fond memories of the introduction of Levels (Oooooo) back in the day, but I'm feeling I've been pushed to a point where I have to default to whatever program does a better job handeling RAW info, and ACR is not cutting it at a professional level.

Well, I don't know how to explain it any better, I feel I put it pretty straight forward, however here's an example from a small lookbook. The red is not accurate, everything else is.
The only thing I've ever come up with is possibly some 'Out of Gamut Warning' option that I haven't found to disable, twenty_one. However, no, I do know Lightroom VERY well, just not 100%, maybe 95%. When Soft proofing for monitor, all colors in the example are within gamut in sRGB, AdobeRGB, and my calibrated monitor color space.
I've almost exclusively run into this with NEFs, I've used Lightroom with Canon, PhaseOne backs, Leaf backs, Fujis, and more. Oh, and I am a pro, and have worked a wide range of clients from Harper's, Elle, and BEBE, to RED, Playboy and more -not to toot my horn, but to establish I'm not a green.
I'm on Lightroom 5, current build.
Typically I stay with the Adobe Standard Profile or Portrait, but none seem to help this particular issue.
Not sure what sort of NEFs Nikon produced in '76, but I to have been with Adobe since Photoshop 2. I'm viewing on a calibrated monitor in good viewing conditions. I don't print, this is most commonly an issue with lookbooks and catalogs when they need perfect color, the issue remains when viewed on other monitors. I've also tested images on my studio's Eizo CG276 and run into nealry exactly the same results (nearly in that there are pixels of difference, however it's a different size than my normal editing monitor).
