Why am I missing templates in Pages 4.3?

Hi,
So for some reason my version of Pages does not have templates that are clearly shown on Apple's Pages website... The screenshots advertising the program show beautiful templates like "Glass" and "Hero" that re not available in my Pages application. Any ideas?

Thanks,
David

Hi David,
My copy of Pages 4.3 does contains all of the templates shown of the screen shot of the Template Chooser.
Notice that the visible ones in the Mac screen shot all have names following the pattern: xxx Newsletter or xxx Brochure. Most other templates follow a similar pattern - a suggested purpose, followed by the type of document, sometimes with a size specified as well. The templates that do not follow this pattern have generic names: Program, Brochure, Catalog, Datasheet, Flyer, Menu.
Word processing templates' (the examples above are all Page Layout templates) names are similaly given general names, some with a suggetion of what they might be appropriate for, others just called Invoice, Fax, Syllabus, Catalog.
The screen shot of a Mac and two i-devices, on the other hand, shows documents, not templates.
Note the dialogue box on the MacBook screen.
The bar at the top says "Pages," not "Template Chooser".
The two buttons at the bottom right say "Cancel" and "Open." On the Template Chooser dialogue, these buttons say "Cancel" and "Choose."
Of the eight visible icons, only one, "Serengeti Report" has a title resembling a template name.
All except "School" (which appears to be a folder, containing four files), have dates under the title—something not seen on any of the Template Chooser items.
Dates are also visible on the iPad screen, but are missing from the iPhone, likey due to space restrictions.
These, except for "School," are all Documents, not Templates.
There are 84 word processing templates, including the two blanks, and 98 page layout templates, including the two blank canvases on my copy of Paves '09 v4.3, not including the custom templates I have added.
I suspect the the number on yours is the same.
Misleading? Not at all. They are examples of what can be produced with Pages. As noted above, it's pretty obvious they are not templates.
If you look a little further on the page, you'll see a double page spread from the "Sailing" document, with these words beside it:
"Powerful page layout.
Do-it-yourself design.
Create your own design from a blank canvas — ..."
Can't get much clearer than that about this not being a template.
Regards,
Barry

• Why are my templates in pages in different languages and not in english

hey everyone i just wanted to know why my templates in pages are showing up in different languages other than english. How do i get my templates in pages to appear in english.

Often asked and responded question.
In the templates the text areas are filled with a fake language.
It's perfectly explained in the Help !
Details in page 235 of the PDF USER's Guide.

• Missing templates (Pages and Keynote)

Could anyone please help answer if templates were removed and are not included in the most recent versions of Pages 5.1 and Keynote 6.1?
Specifically:
1) Did Pages 5.0 have a template for "Grove Surfboards?"
2) Did Keynote 6.0 have a template for a presentation titled, "The History of Pigments?"
I recently upgraded from Pages 4.3 to 5.1 and Keynote 5.3 to 6.1, and unfortunately, I am worried that I missed out on the above creative templates.
Any helpy clarifying would be much appreciated.
Thank you,
Kim

Apple has helped you to “miss out.” Pages v5+ has dropped several templates from your Pages v4.3 experience, due primarily to about 100+ missing features and functionality in the application that adversely affect those former templates.
Recommendation. Pages ’09 v4.3 remains in /Applications/iWork folder. Use it to great productivity until Apple restores missing functionality to Pages v5+.

• Adding a template style page in Pages 5

Can anyone help me please?
I have upgraded to Pages 5.0 and not only are there far fewer interesting templates for me to start working from (I am looking particularly in the Newsletters section) but I am also having a problem adding template styled pages to a new project.
Previously I simply clicked on Insert > Pages in the menu and then selected the layout. I can't seem to find how to do this in 5.0 - all I can do is create a blank section.
I'm sure I must be missing something really obvious but I can't figure out what it is!
Regards, Peter
PS is there any way to upgrade to Pages 5.0 but not lose the decent (interesting) templates? I'm a school teacher and the kids love having interesting templates to start with - these new ones are terrible!

The lack of page/section styles was one of the first features I noticed missing in Pages 5.0. This is really disappointing for me as I've created a number of my own document templates and have made extensive use of page/section styles.
On one hand I can understand why Apple may have removed this feature. It is rather an anomaly among its peers. Microsoft Word does not use page/section styles and to some users it could be a bit of a confusing feature in Pages. I know for me it was somewhat confusing at first. I was used to the MS Word way of doing things and I was wondering how these section style templates differed from me just setting my own section style. But then I figured out that it is like a slide template in Keynote. It is simply a template and can be used as a shortcut to setup a new document section in a standard style. Since figuring out how to use the page/section styles, it has been awesome and has been one of the key reasons I like Pages better than Word and why I switched completely from Word to Pages.
For now, I guess I will have to figure out how to work without it which will basically mean that I will have to go back to the old manual method of just copying and pasting section styles. It will take longer to add new sections with identical styles to a document and will be more buggy. It is likely that I will not always get it exactly correctly which will result in consistency issues in my documents. As well, the inability to copy and paste whole pages/sections from the page thumbnails will make this process take even longer and be even more buggy. But ultimately it is doable.
I can only hope that the page/section templates is a feature that Apple will bring back very soon. I wish someone from Apple would at least let us know if this feature will be making its way back in or if it is gone for good. Accordingly, we could move on or plan for its return.

• Missing Template Handler is missing in action.

After a bit of struggle I found out how to input a missing
template
handler into our aged 4.5 Unix ColdFusion server. I was able
to have it
server up the custom 404error.htm file developed by our web
department.
And this worked, sort of.
The problem was that this HTML file makes use of Apache
<!-- include
virtual...--> directives which, of course, ColdFusion does
not understand.
So, I say no problem, I've dealt with this already before and
expanded
on some existing code that reads the html file and replaces
all these
virtual includes with the contents of the included file using
<cfile...>
tags and reFind() functions. This version even uses a Custom
Tag and
recursion to handle virtual includes inside of virtually
included files.
And this works great!
http://www.cdpr.ca.gov/errors/404error.cfm.
But when I then went into the ColdFusion administrator and
replaced the
HTML file path
'/rootDir/subDir/subDir/htdocs/errors/404error.htm'
with the corresponding CFML path
'/rootDir/subDir/subDir/htdocs/errors/404error.cfm' it stops
working.
ColdFusion starts to display the default ColdFusion 404 not
found error
rather then my specified Missing Template Handler.
What's wrong here? Why can't I server up a CFM file from the
exact same
place I can serve up an, albeit incomplete, HTML file?

Everything you have describe is true. The main point is that
sometimes
people do not want to and that there are reasons not to let
IIS handle
ColdFusion missing templates.
To be as clear as possible, if you have set IIS to check for
the
existence of a cfm file and then throw either a default or
custom HTTP
404 error page this will overwrite anything that could of or
would of
been done with a ColdFusion missing template page.
Sometimes this is a bad thing. For one example, there are
techniques
and development methodologies that build a 'template' or
'response'
completely in memory and a cfm file does not actually exist
in this
case. This is more advanced then many people work with but it
is
possible. In this case your having IIS check for the
existence of a
template would defeat the purpose. Another example is that a
server
wide missing template handler used by the ColdFusion server
can be
passed simple information about the error from ColdFusion,
this does not
happen with the IIS methodology.
So the missing template handler exists for cases where for
one reason or
another somebody does not want to have IIS checking for the
existence of
a cfm template before handing off the request to the
ColdFusion server.
As with many things in life, it is all about choices and what
works for
one person may not work for another.
A common difficulty with the missing template handler is that
it does
not necessarily live in the web server root. It has to live
in the Jrun
(aka Java) server web root which often is different then the
web server
root.
I.E. A common configuration may be this.
c:/inetpub/wwwroot <!-- web server root -->
c:/jrun/servers/cfusion/cfusion-ear/cfusion-war <!-- Java
server web
root --->
The latter is where the ColdFusion server wide missing
template hander
template file would have to live in this example
configuration.

• How can I use Pages 4.3 (from Retail pack) template on Pages 5.2 (from Mac App Store)?

This is a new machine running on Mavericks bought last year since my old Mac had a hard-drive failure. Installed Pages (part of iWork '09 package), updated to Pages 5.0 from the Mac App Store and no issues. However, now I need to use some of the old Pages template (San Fancisco Letter to be specific) and the new Pages dosn't have that.
So I had to extract the San Fancisco template from Pages '09 and tried installing under 'My Template' on Pages 5.3. But evertime I'm getting an error while installing. That's when I realised after going through the discussions here, that I can't install a Pages '09 template on Pages 5.3.
So my question is how to use a Pages 4.0 template on Pages 5.3? Is it possible to install Pages 4.3 while Pages 5.2 is still installed? Is there a workaround?
Note: I don't need Pages 4.3 but would like to use some of the templates from there, working on Pages 5.2.
Thanks in advance - Sid

Due to the huge number of missing features in v5.2 that were functional in Pages ’09 v4.3, many of the older version templates expect features/functionality that simply do not exist in v5.2. You should realize that Pages v5 is a brand new application/design, and not a progressive version enhancement to Pages ’09.
When you updated to Pages v5, that process automatically moved Pages ’09 v4.3 into /Applications/iWork '09. You can continue to use the older Pages (and associated custom templates) on Mavericks.
I would resist removing Pages ’09 from your machine, as it is functionally superior to Pages v5.
Templates that you save with Pages ’09 v4.3 are kept in ~/Library/Application Support/iWork/Pages/Templates/My Templates
Templates that you save with Pages v5+ are kept in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iWork.Pages/Data/Library/Application Support/User Templates
One of the things that I noticed about the original Pages v5 installation is that it transferred a small subset of My Templates from Pages ’09 into the above User Templates location. These were relative simple templates. The complicated ones did not migrate.
Be certain to make a backup copy of any Pages ’09 template document. Once you open it in Pages v5+, it can no longer be opened in the older Pages application. Providing the template is compatible with Pages v5+, perform a File > Save as Template... to the default location.

• Creating multi-section templates in Pages 5 - how?

In Pages 4.3 you could define and name various multi-page sections that lived 'within' a document template, and then pick from these to build up a document.
You could control these internal sections within the template using the "Manage Pages..." command (having first moved arbitrary sets of pages to the template area using the "Capture pages..." command.
I can't find any equivalent to either of these commands in Pages 5 - am I missing something? Or is Pages 5 currently short of this feature?

I've just confirmed that the templates features have been removed - if you 'roundtrip' a Pages 09 document into Pages 5 and then save it back to Pages 09, the resulting document has had all the template section related information removed along the way.
This is a serious blow for us - we similarly use multi-purpose templates in Pages 09 (e.g. just one for all the variations of invoice we generate). Initial reports in these fora and elsewhere suggest that there are several other key features that didn't make it through to the latest version of Pages - unclear whether these make the application unusable in our production environment or not.
What is most frustrating is that the new Pages finally has proper RTL support (which we've been wanting for ages)... aaagh!
But at least we were just about to create a new set of templates, so maybe we use this as 'final nail in coffin' and invest this time in another app - I guess NeoOffice is the most likely candidate, as MS Office (on OSX) still does not support RTL in any sensible fashion.

• Lost template, have pages from template, how can I convert?

In a moment of crass stupidity, I managed to delete a template upon which several pages of a site under development are based. There was a P7 menu on the page. Fortunately, I have a couple of pages based on the template alive and well. Can someone tell me how to convert one of these pages back to the template from which it was created?
Pages from the template are
http://www.jdcdemo.com/pbc/greater-pine-bluff-chamber-local-apartment-list.html
http://www.jdcdemo.com/pbc/greater-pine-bluff-chamber-community-calendar.html
The calendar page is rife with errors of which I am aware. Most are not in the template.
Can someone tell me how to proceed to recover from my dumb mistake?
Thanks,
Joe

Well, we have gotten a lot of looks and no answer. From another board, the first response was the correct one, to wit:
open a page created from the original (now missing) template
- go to Modify>Templates>Detach from template.
- save this via File>Save as template
- create new editable regions via Insert>Template Objects>Insert Editable Region
I took a hard look at the editable region in the file from the template, and set up and named the new editable region as a clone of the original. The pages from the template, worked just fine.
Blind hog finds acorn,
Joe

• Adding a page from custom Templates in Pages 5

I know a lot of features have been removed, but this HAS to be my own operator error.
Currently using Pages 5.1 on all of my macs 10.9.2
I build multi page templates in pages. For example: a cover page, a storyboard page, a notes page, looks page and an end page.
I used to save a custom template that consisted of a layout for each page, then, under 'sections' I could add multiples of any page.
I usually need mroe than one storyboard page, multiple notes pages, and could easily do this.
I cannot figure out how to add additional preconfigured pages as I need them.
I know I can no longer duplicate a page (workaround is grouping everythin on a page, copy and paste to a blank page... seriously)
And the only thing I can figure is to make a new template with 40 of each custom page layout, so I have multiple custom
I have to be missing the new method to do this.
thank you in advance.

Gone.
Removed by Apple along with 100 other fetaures.
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Use that instead.
Rate/review Pages 5 in the App Store if you are unhappy.

• How can one Delete a Template in Pages

Can any one advise me how to delete Templates in Pages on my MacBook Pro?

Not sure why one would want to delete a template?
You can close out the Template Chooser by hitting the red button.
If you go to applications>iWorks>Pages> and control click on the app>this opens PackageContents>>Contents>Resources>Templates
You can delete here. I would not advise it. I would have a back-up of your Pages.app or a system back-up incase something goes awry.

• Missing Template Handler Issues

Hi there, we're having some problems setting this up. We get
the custom page we've created but still see the default coldfusion
information..... Here's what we've done..
(1) Set the path correctly in the Coldfusion Admin >
Settings. 'Missing Template Handler'.
(2) Made the changes in IIS as described here...
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=95ee04fb&sliceId=1

You are using CF8 right? Because it works just fine for me.
Here is what I did to test.
1) created a simple cfm template with nothing more than
<cfoutput>helloworld</cfoutput> and
saved it as missing.cfm in my webroot (
http://localhost/missing.cfm
2) logged into the coldfusion administrator and added
/missing.cfm into the box where it asks for the missing template
relative path.
3) hit submit changes.
then browsed out to
http://localhost/SomeStrangePageThatDoesntExist.cfm
and as expected saw only "missing"
The only thing I can think of is that you have in your
missing template page another cfinclude that is failing.
Try the above approach and see if you continue to get the
error.

• Can you specify a missing template handler that lives under another site?

I have configured a dedicated site, separate from my website, for my ColdFusion administrator (CFIDE). So I have my website here: http://www.public-site.com/ and my ColdFusion admin here: http://www.cfadmin-site.com/ . They both live on the same server but under different directories. So now I am configuring my ColdFusion settings and wondering if there is some way to configure the missing template handler and site-wide error handler to use files that live under the public site directory so that I can give my users a consistent look?
I am guessing that this is not possible but thought I would ask. I may be left with creating the modules under my ColdFusion admin directory and then using <cflocation> to redirect the user back to the public website environment. Or embedding some javascript to redirect them. Any other thoughts?

OK, now I think I see where you are coming from about not needing to redirect *lightbulb* and perhaps I can explain to you what I am seeing. Again, here is my setup:
web root: D:\wwwroot\public-site\
cf web root: D:\wwwroot\cfadmin-site\
Now let's say I have a file in the web root like this: D:\wwwroot\public-site\error.cfm If I try to enter that in my site-wide error handler in ColdFusion it tells me that the file does not exist. Makes sense.
So I moved my file to the cf web root like this: D:\wwwroot\cfadmin-site\error.cfm and set my site-wide error handler accordingly. Now when I force an exception I get an error that my site-wide error handler failed. In the logs I see this error:
"Error","jrpp-26","11/08/10","14:02:30",,"'' The specific sequence of files included or processed is: D:\wwwroot\public-site\error.cfm'' "
java.security.PrivilegedActionException: coldfusion.runtime.TemplateNotFoundException: File not found: D:\wwwroot\public-site\error.cfm
So now that a template is executing ColdFusion is looking for the site-wide error handler in the web root of the public site. But the ColdFusion administrator will not let me enter that path in the site-wide error handler setting of the administrator page.
Did you run across this too? Surely we don't need to have the file in both locations.
