Why Am I Paying Twice for What I Already Pay For?

I'm not sure this is the right place to post this, but unfortunately there don't appear to be any other options available to provide feedback on an issue.
There are two examples I'd like to cite as to why I believe I'm paying twice for what I already pay for.  First - one that is best described via an incident that happened over Labor Day weekend.  Late Saturday night, I finally had an opportunity to watch something I have been intending to watch as an HBO subscriber for a while now:  "The Normal Heart".  It was located in an On Demand folder called "Emmy Nominees".  About 2/3 of the way through, the screen froze.  I managed to get back to the Emmy Nominees folder, but at this point the only thing that appeared was the word "Empty".  I tried again the next morning, and not only was the Emmy Nominees folder gone, but the movie appeared nowhere in the subscriber's area in On Demand.  A search revealed that I could buy it in either SD or HD form, but could not rent it (not that I would).
Now - midnight had been crossed, bringing us into September 1st.  Perhaps the action was scheduled for that time.  However, why would Verizon decide to interrupt a real time stream that the customer is entitled to?  And then make them fully purchase it to see the rest of it?
But there is more to this.  Why would a paying HBO customer now be required to purchase something?  Here's another example:  I have been a big fan of Boardwalk Empire.  Previous seasons are now available for rental or purchase - but with the exception of the latest season being in On Demand (which I assume is there to grow one's appetite for the final season commencing shortly), even an HBO customer has to pay to see prior season reruns.
Perhaps I have more of a bone to pick with HBO than with Verizon, but it is ridiculous to charge a customer for what they have already paid for.

I agree 100% as to what you are saying here and I assume if we call Verizon customer support, we get a scripted response. That not all seasons are available On Demand, even if you are a HBO subscriber.
I had a friend check, that has Comcast. Boardwalk Empire, all seasons are available, On Demand.  So why as Verizon customers we have to pay extra if we want to watch, Boardwalk Empire, On Demand? If we already subscribe to HBO? It's like Verizon is double dipping their customers?
I have found that you can watch all of the Boardwalk Empire seasons on HBO Go, but I don't know about anyone else? I surf the web in a different room in my house. I like to relax in my recliner and watch Boardwalk Empire on my big screen.
I've been very happy with Verizon FIOs since I became a customer, but I'm also disappointed in the On Demand offerings they have and to have to pay extra for it, while it's available free to other cable subscribers.

  • Why was I charged twice for a preorder?

I preordered an album on iTunes and it charged me $14.99 after I preordered it. Now that I want to claim the album, it is asking me to pay another $14.99. What happened? How can I receive the album

When you press Pre-Order, iTunes does not charge you. You can look at your purchase history to verify. So when you attempt to download the content you choose pre-ordered iTunes tells you you will be charged. The only thing weird about it is that iTunes didn't automatically download when the content was available for download the day of release...
To check you purchase history and make sure that whether if you are charged twice is to click on your Apple ID and enter your password. Go down to the middle part where it lists all of your past purchase receipts. See if you indeed have been charged twice.
If you did, then you have to e-mail Apple here.

  • Why doesn't my playlist remember what's already played?

i'm sure this is a dumb question, but i'll shoot, anyway:
i use my 160GB ipod classic in my car. i have a large playlist set up (3,000+ songs). however, every time i turn off my car, change to the radio or otherwise switch from that playlist, the playlist starts again from the beginning. while it's still technically random, i often hear certain songs over and over again simply becasue the playlist doesn't "know" they've already been played.
i have it set to shuffle, which is what i want. but i would like the ipod to remember which songs in the playlist have already played. is there any way to do this?

    CDJunkie wrote:
What car stereo do you have? I have an Alpine and mine happens to do what you want. If I'm in the middle of a playlist and I turn off the car or change to any other source, when I switch back to the iPod it picks up where it left off. Right in the middle of the song when I switched and continues from there. In fact, when I unplug the iPod and plug it back in it continues the playlist. However, if I change playlists or select play by artist/album/song or resync with iTunes it doesn't remember where I left off in the playlist and starts from the beginning (unless I shuffle).
    it's a bmw unit.
actually, mine does do that too. i should've been more clear. i didn't mean when i turn the car off or the stereo off - i meant when i switch from ipod to radio, for instance, or switch from one playlist to another.

  • I am already paying for data so why is there a charge for tethering?

I would really like to upgrade my Droid to a Droid 4 and use the WiFi hot spot feature. I have not done so yet because Verizon wants to charge me to use this feature of the phone. This appears to be illegal and I cannot understand and justify paying a monthly fee for something I am already paying for. I have seen a few posts on other websites trying to explain why Verizon or any other provider can charge for enabling a feature and not providing any additional service to the consumer however they are all very flawed attempts. I just want a VERY VERY VERY good reason why this is legal and justifiable. Please give me a convincing argument as to why anyone can charge twice for the same thing.
Tethering does not increase the data capacity of the phone. Tethering allows the phone to act as a bridge (modem) between a device to the network.
    Q: Does Bandwidth increase?
A: No, if the bandwidth to your phone is 8 Mbps, enabling tethering does not change the bandwidth therefore if a YouTube video is running on the phone and three other devices tethered to the phone they will be sharing the 8 Mbps bandwidth. This means that each device would only be able to use 2 Mbps of bandwidth under heavy usage. (You will not actually get an even split for several reasons and all combined will be less than 8 Mbps but that is due to overhead and OS limitations.)
Q: Am I allowed to use more data now that I am paying more?
A: No, if your data plan is for 2 GB per month, you will be charged extra for using more than 2 GB in one month. This includes the data usage of the phone and other devices while they are tethered to your phone.
Q: Is there any reason to charge for tethering?
A: (My opinion but I would like to be proven wrong.) The only possible justifiable reason may be for those who have unlimited data plans. Verizon and other providers must provide a level of service that customers will be pleased with. I could be wrong but it would be difficult for someone to use too much data on their phone alone. (I know there are exceptional cases but this is true for the majority.) Verizon and other providers plan the network based on an average (i.e. 1 GB per month) usage for each phone with data. It is much easier and more likely users would consume more data if a device such as a laptop is tethered to the phone therefore users with unlimited plans would cost the provider more money to increase the bandwidth of the backbone. (Limited plans will be charged more but unlimited data customers are not as there is no limit, which is a problem.)
IMHO: The right thing for Verizon and other providers to do is to stop requesting that phones be shipped which require a provision from the provider so they can charge for the feature. There is legal precedent that it is illegal for a provider of a service to charge a customer for additional devices using their services if the provider is not providing additional service.
In order for Verizon and other providers to address issues with network capacity and unlimited data subscribers there are a few options available. One is to provide an incentive for those users to switch from unlimited to limited data plans or provide a credit for a device upgrade, etc. An other option is to keep things as they are with phone provisioning but provide tethering to limited data users for no additional charge and to charge users with unlimited plans for tethering. (BTW: I think is the best option.)
FYI: I do have an unlimited data plan and would be willing to switch to limited data if tethering were included and the prices were the same. Right now there is no incentive for me to switch to a different data plan especially if I need to pay for tethering in addition to limited data. I currently have an iPad with AT&T service which is an additional fee I am paying but if I drop the AT&T plan, upgrade my phone, and add tethering, I would be paying more and getting less so why should I? (The less is that my iPad would not get email updates, etc. except when I turn the WiFi hot spot on, which I understand runs down the battery so you do not want it on 24x7. Oh, another reason Verizon and others should not charge for tethering as tethering is not available 24x7)
Please I would like some straight honest answers to why it is legal for Verizon and others to charge for tethering and why I should pay for it.

I want clarify what I am asking for as I fear that many people may be thinking what Wildman stated which is not true. I think it is presumptuous for Wildman to think that I am not sincere and that I will not award points for a correct answer. The closest one to come to a correct answer thus far is jimfitzgerald however I need to see the policy or something in writing that explains what jimfitzgerald stated.
To help clarify what I am looking for, I will respond to some earlier posts as I think it may help.
BTW: I think it is premature to ask that points be awarded but I will put a deadline and a default to this discussion. If I don't see a good answer to this post by next weekend, I plan to award the points to Wildman as the points seem to be of importance. I am actually hoping that a good answer is provided so that it will help anyone else who is in the same situation as myself. I think there must be a good answer as I would hope that carriers would not charge for this feature if they are really not providing an additional service. I also would hope that customers are not gullible enough to pay for something twice which on the surface this appears to be. This does seem to come up enough that the carriers should do a better job explaining what they are providing.

Response: Please provide a reference to the Verizon Source which states this and I will award points as this is an acceptable answer and is what I am looking for as stated in my original post. I cannot just accept a general statement like this as it will carry no wait if I get charged for going over my data limit.

Quote: "Question #1 ... you will be consuming TWICE as much data ..."
Response: This is incorrect as the 4G LTE connection will not be able to provide any more data per second than the phone itself. I think you meant to state that you may consume your limit of n GB per month in a period of a week on a laptop verses 3 weeks on the phone which is correct. If you continue to consume data past your limit, you will need to pay more for it so what is your point? If you don't pay more for going over if you have the tethering plan then that makes all the difference. This would be my misunderstanding and would be an acceptable answer. If this is the case, please point me to the Verizon documentation which states this and I will award points.

Quote: "Question #2 ... You get an ADDITIONAL allowance for your use when you activate a mobile hot-spot."
Response: This seems to allude to the fact that I may not understand how data usage is counted when tethering is added to your plan. Please provide a reference so I can read it and I will award points. Hopefully we are coming to answer here.
From: rcschnoor on Feb 18, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Quote:  "Question #3 ... but I don't think anyone would be happy with a monthly data bill of $60+ dollars."
Response: You are correct which is why I am having an issue with this. If I upgrade and keep my current unlimited plan, I will be paying $75 per month for data and tethering. To make matters worse, currently I am not a heavy data user as much of the time I have access to WiFi. I am considering switching to a 2 GB per month plan based on my current usage but I hate to give up my current plan as I will not be able to go back. I will switch however if the tethering was not an added cost or there is in fact an additional data allocation for tethered devices. I already feel that I am overpaying for data based on my current usage. The problem with switching plans is I could see if I have tethering, I may go over one or two months per year as once in a great while I need access and do not have WiFi available.
FYI: Here is a breakdown of my current usage.
              - Verizon Phone: (Unlimited data @ $45/month) Average Usage 0.23 GB/month
              - AT&T iPad: (2 GB/month @ $25) Average usage 0.89 GB/month
I do have another problem with switching which is unrelated to the data plan but is related to usage but will increase my cost per month.
From: jimfitzgerald on Feb 18, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Quote: "Or, in summary, charging for tethering is a way to make the people who use lots of data pay for it, rather than having everyone share the cost whether they use it or not."
Response: Sorry but my experience is just the opposite.
I would like to thank everyone who has tried to answer this question. It looks like there may be an answer but I would like to see it explained in black and white from the Verizon site. I cannot switch plans based on posts in this forum alone. If I were to switch then get hit with additional charges one month, I cannot call customer service and say that jimfitzgerald and rcschnoor told me that there was an additional data being provided to tethered devices.
I hope this helps and I hope this can be answered soon.

Welcome to the world of digital media. Your can't really transfer it. I don't know what the rules are about transferring to your spouse but I do know that in some cases when you die, your heirs cannot inherit your digital media. This is why there is still an advantage to buying the CD since the usage rights belong to whomever holds the physical media.
A possible workaround is to burn the songs to a music CD with yout account (tracks only without song titles) and then having your wife upload it as a regular music CD onto her account. It's been a while since i've done this so I'm not sure if it would work now.
Please note that I'm not advocating copyright and/or TOS violations. I'm only suggesting ways to copy music for your own personal use which has traditonally been permitted. I only did this because I wanted to convert iTunes songs to mp3 files so I could burn them onto a data CD for use in my car. It would make sense that since married couples are a joint entity, this would be personal use.
Also, I'm not a lawyer so don't take this as legal advice.

  • Why am I paying twice?

So I finally had to give up my BEAUTIFUL plan having unlimited data and messaging to come over to the land of smartphones and data charges.... yay smh
However as I look at my first bill, it says I'm paying for two month. This month and one in advance
Can anyone explain why I'm paying for two months? Will I get a break next month?

Probably a backdated or on-demand change, which resulted in paying the difference between the two plans for the amount of time the new plan was active.
Ex: You are charged on the prior bill for a 59.99 price plan and in the middle of the cycle the 59.99 was covering, you decide to go up to a 79.99 price plan and "backdate" it. You'll be credited 59.99 and charged 79.99 twice (see below).
    10/10 - 11/09 Bill cycle
    9/10 - 10/09 Nationwide XXX min  -$59.99
    9/10 - 10/09 Nationwide XXX min  $79.99
    10/10 - 11/09 Nationwide XXX min  $79.99
Here we see that, yes, you are being charged for two months, but the majority of the first month was reimbursed to accommodate what was already charged. If it was changed in the middle of the cycle through what some may call an "on-demand" change, you would see the amounts affected by the following formula:
x / days in cycle = daily rate/allowance * amount of days it is or is not active on the account
Hope this helps. This is just how I understand it.
    Peace and love.

  • Since iOS8 my iphone 3GS no longer synchronises with my two ipads and my laptop.  none of the many suggested solutions work.  i rely on my phone to work as it did before for  medical reasons.  i did not ask for this to happen.  why must i pay?

as my iphone used to remind me when to take my medicine wherever i was i could trust apple and its products for use.  i can no longer do this and mourn the loss of freedom of movement i had prior to iOS8.  i have spent days and days following advice and suggested remedies without success.  i see no other solutions than buying a phone that will sync with iOS8.  but why should i pay to repair damage to the system i have relied upon done by someone else?  is it in fact legat for anyone to do this to me, or anyone else?

I cannot check any recorded version of any telephone call. You are referring to me as if I am an Apple employee. That could not be further than the truth. If you took the time to read any part of where you register for the forum, this is a user to user forum. I am a user just like yourself.
You made the statement that you use your phone to create a reminder to take medication. A 3GS phone is incapable of running iOS8, so that has nothing to do with it. I asked if you have iOS8 on your iPads, which you fail to identify, and avoid the answer. And where does the laptop fit into this, since it does not use iOS8.
If you were to identify the problem you are alleging, then someone might be interested in helping. You do not indicate your issue except to say about an inability to synchronize between devices. And I do not appreciate your assessment of my character.
Let me be precise: You are not addressing Apple, no one can determine what has happened to your devices since you do not describe the issues, and it is not up to users to determine responsibility. I suggest you contact Apple again, as you state you have done, and take up the issue with them.
    I'm through.

  • Consistantly charged twice for purchases in iTunes , why is this allowed?

Four instances total, and in each instance iTunes directed me to an updated TOS agreement. I checked the agreement, then navigated back to the store only to find being twiced charged for the same download.
Windows Vista, iTunes 8.1.1.10, fresh install...
Not once or twice, but four time now, why does this happen? why is there no warning box? Wouldn't be common sense to warn when thru either user error or software bug the same product is being purchased repeatedly?
Maybe some people want to pay twice for the same thing, but I imagine most would rather not be charged repeatedly for items.
I guess there is no way to remove these erroneous charges, since I can't find any sort of method of aborting the download.
This has happened in the past, and I've blown it off as a fluke. But now with a fresh install of the newest software, I can't make a single purchase without being charged twice.
A fresh reinstall and a brand new reformatted drive also.
Thank you for any insight you may have.
