In Finder "View > Show View Options > Arrange By " there you will find choices as to how your desktop arranges itself or not.

used to be able to move desktop icons, for programs, around on the desktop. HOW to move them now?

Just in case you are blocked from your desktop by Firefox's display mode:
    * You can switch out of full screen mode using the F11 function key. (This key toggle full screen mode on and off.)
    * If the minimize, restore/maximize, and close buttons are not visible on the title bar, you could try pressing Alt+spacebar to use the control menu for the window.

  • Why can't I place disk icons on my desktop?

Why can't I place disk icons on my desktop?
I installed OSX Lion, version 10.7.1 from the App Store onto the internal disk of my MacBookPro which was cloned to an external FW800 GoFlexDesk drive. I booted from that external drive, ran the disk utility to erase and then repartition my internal drive so that I would have a "clean" installation of Lion. My disk icon (for the internal drive) does not even show in Finder windows. In Snow Leopard I showed my internal drive, my Time Capsule drives, and any external drives on my desktop as icons. Now these do not even show in Finder. I know they are there, because if I choose the path view option, they are shown when I pick "All My Files" under favorites. I can navigate backwards in the path bar, but still they do not actually allow me to select them or drag them to the desktop. In Snow Leopard, it was an option to show disks on desktop in general system preferences, but I find that option no where in Lion! What simple little thing am I missing?

Hello, it seems that you can mirror your Mac desktop on your Apple TV if you have a very recent Mac and OSX Mountain Lion. The other alternative is the very efficient third party software called Air Parrot (http://airparrot.com/)
I've just started using it with my Mabook pro Mid 2010 running on Mountain Lion. It works perfectly well and only costs 10$... Hope it can help

If it appeared because you were changing the Finder's preferences, change them back. If not, just delete the item.

  • Suddenly unable to move folders around on my desktop: why?

I suddenly can no longer move folders around (i.e., reposition them) on my Desktop: why?

Every time I try to move/drag a folder residing on the Desktop to another position, it snaps back in place immediately, namely to the top of display. This is true of all the other folders, as well. They all appear in vertical order on the right hand side of the display, as they always have, but I can't move them around any more.
Have been a Mac user forever, but never encountered this issue before...Wierd.

  • Unable to move icons in dock & elements in applications

    Hi all
From this morning i've this problem on my MBP (Unibody, end of 2008 with OS X 10.8.4):
I was unable to move objects in Adobe Ilustrator, when i select something i start to move it but when i release the button ( i've tried both with the trackpad and the mouse) the object remains attatched to the icon (as if i haven't released the button of the mouse) and i can't move it. It sblocks only when i click "esc" or go to mission control and then return to the app, in this moment it sblocks from the arrow of the mouse and returns to his original position.
Thinking about a problem of the app i've deleted it and tried to reinstall it but doing this thing i've seen that i've the same problem not only in illustrator but in the other apps too and in the desk (with the icons) too.
I think that is not an hardware problem 'cause all the button functions with the other thing and 'cause i've tried both the trackpad and the mouse.
The only new thing that my mac have different than yesterday are two apps: Mini Display connect and Air Connect, i don't know if this have caused the problem..

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open. Post the contents of that window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}' | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Osx Lion moves icons in the desktop

    Hi All
I've found that OSX Lion has the tendency of re-arranging the icons in the Desktop. It takes everything "to the right".
Is that a bug or a feature?
We should NOT have icons on our desktop?
    tx for the help

As discussed on other threads, this is very widespread.
For my solution, I did the following:
Finder menu bar > Go > Go to folder > (type) ~/Library/Preferences
There are lots of strange otherwise invisible files, but scroll down to
    com.apple.desktop.plist
Drag this to the trash, and restart.
If you had a desktop picture you will have to re-set it, but the icon-moving should stop.
    Why? I dont know.

  • When I put a website Icon on my desktop, how do I make firefox use the Icon native to that website instead of the default Firefox Icon?

When I drag and drop a website onto my desktop, how can I make Firefox use the icon native to that website instead of the default firefox icon?
I have even gone painstakingly (SEVERAL TIMES) to the sites with IE, dragged the site onto my desktop in order to obtain the site native icons for my desktop (and deleted the ones with the Firefox icon) .... but they all soon revert to the default Firefox icon.
    E X T R E M E L Y F R U S T R A T I N G !!!!!!!!!

I don't want icons from the Firefox library.
I want the icon that comes from the website I'm making the shortcut for.
(If you go to a site in IE you will see the site generated icon at the left end of the URL in the address field.)
If I make IE my default browser I am able to get (and keep) those icons as shortcuts on my desktop without a problem.
I want to keep Firefox as my default browser.
So I want to know how to make Firefox accept the icon that comes from the website like IE does.
I have even gone to the trouble to use IE to create the shortcuts with the site specific icons.....but after I do that...... FIREFOX CONVERTS THEM TO THE FIREFOX DEFAULT ICON as soon as I re-boot or refresh my desktop.
I generally prefer Firefox as a browser....but If there's no fix.....I'm going to dump Firefox.

  • Why have I got 2 Safari icons on the desktop?

    Hello
I don't know how this happened, but I now have 2 Safari icons in the dock (one is outlined by a square when clicked), but when my husband goes into his account, he can't get Safari and it doesn't show in the finder!
Can anybody advise, or will I have to get somebody out to look at this?
    Thanks

not sure why it's there twice.  just use your mouse to lift one of them up above the dock and it will "poof" and disappear.
