Why Aperture 3.0 takes that long to soften one simple RAW picture?

Hi, I just have aperture 3 installed and found one simple action such as soften skins in one NEF file takes several seconds to 'processing'.
i just got a new macbook pro, 371 last week, which should be powerful enough, I thought to run program like aperture.
btw, it runs the photoshop cs4 perfectly, no delay, at least on my pics. not huge in size.
any idea why aperture runs slow?
thanks in advance.

If you search around the forums, you'll find a few things you can do. Here's what to search for:
1) Insufficient disk space/fragmentation
2) Insufficient Memory
3) Library permissions and database repair (start Aperture holding command-option)
4) corrupt files/thumbnails etc
That's where to begin. These issues have been addressed many times here, so you have to look around.

so basically i brought i iphone 5s it was perfectly working  until i found some faults i sent it to apple and it has already been 11 days, also i live in peterborough is it supposed to take that long or is it supposed to take longer because im worried

If you 'sent' it somewhere it could have been delayed in transit.    Or whatever is required to correct the matter isn't available.   Have you phoned to confirm they have received it?   Your nearest store is Cambridge, probably a very busy one.

Do not worry about the backups.  They will be deleted automatically after a week, or if your HD gets too full.  See #30 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
The "other" stuff is just that -- all sorts of things that don't fall into the few categories listed.  The operating system, system work files, plus lots of your stuff like documents, mail, etc.  See Lion's Storage Display

  • Why does renaming masters take so long?

I've used Aperture since version 1, and have mostly been happy. But I've always wondered why, when doing a batch rename with "Apply to master files" checked, does it take so long?
A few minutes ago, I started the process for a mere 256 photos and I'm still sitting here waiting as it renames originals. This behavior is across all libraries and it even happens on a brand new small library.
The Finder can rename files almost instantly. iView Media Pro could do it as well (in 2005). I hope somebody can come up with a logical reason why in 2013 a simple master filename rename is the slowest part of our workflow.
For anybody saying to just rename them on import, I would rather wait until all cards from all cameras from an event are imported, arrange them by date so the renamed file sequence number is in the order that they were shot. If I rename them on import, the sequence numbers won't be chronological and that is why I don't rename on import (unless I've only shot on one camera, which is rare).
Does anybody see this changing in the future? (I've been sending regular feedback suggesting more robust renaming tools since 2007. Can I do anything else to speed this up?).
The rename process is done. Took > 5 minutes to rename 256 files. Seems like an eternity. It's been slow on every computer I've ever had, current one is Mac Pro 2 x 2.26 quad-core Xeon with 24 GB RAM, Application and startup drive is SSD, media files are on HDD.

Is there _anything_ else in your set-up that could be adding to the time it takes to write the names to disk?  Disk-mirroring?  Back-ups?  Some kind of indexing (Launchbar, etc.)?
I rename tens of thousands of files, and while it is not instantaneous, I don't have to wait five minutes for a thousand files or more.
You might try something outside Aperture, such as the excellent NameMangler, just to see if batch renaming several hundred files is slow there.  NameMangler was recently upgraded.  It works astoundingly fast.
If you can't resolve this, you might be able to work around it by importing all files into a Finder folder, arranging by date, and then importing into Aperture and renaming on import.  (I'm not positive this will work -- and I'm sorry, but I can't check it right now.)

  • Aperture 3.1 takes incredibly long time to start

Since after the upgrade from 3.0.x to 3.1 Aperture takes a long time to start up. I click on the Aperture icon in the dock, the icon bounces for almost a minute, then it stays still for more than a minute, doing nothing and without the "light bulb" indicator that the app is running. It's just sitting there in the dock. After a total of 2-5 minutes, the Aperture window opens and I can start working.
I tried many things suggested in the forums to speed up Aperture:
    I turned off Faces
I turned off sharing of previews with iLife and iWork
I turned off using embedded JPEGs from camera
I deleted all Aperture preferences as I thought there might be a corruption after upgrade
I removed all plugins from Aperture plugin folder to make sure nothing is interfering
I used the Aperture rebuild and repair options on the library
I created a new Aperture library and imported my photos from the old library into a fresh one
I downloaded and installed the Aperture 3.1 update again to make sure nothing got corrupted during update installation
Nothing helped. Aperture takes 2-3 minutes to fully start.
Plugins in use: NIK Software's Viveza 2 and HDR Efex Pro, Tiltshift for Aperture. That's it. And, as I said, it doesn't help if I take them out of Aperture's plugin folder so they don't get loaded. Problem still remains.
My library isn't that big: 29GB in 8230 items. Is 2-3 minutes a normal startup time?
Has anyone experienced a similar problem after upgrading? As I literally exchanged everything underneath Aperture (deleted preference files, created new library and imported photos from old lib) I don't know what else I could try. Totally uninstall Aperture and re-install it again?
Any suggestions what this could be?
On a sidenote, interestingly Logic Pro takes about the same amount of time to start. The icon bounces in the dock for almost 1 minute, then I hear the harddisk working for another minute until the splash screen finally appears. Logic Pro is loaded after 2 minutes and 20 seconds. I could boot my whole Mac 4x in that timeframe.

To everybody having this problem. I found out what the culprit was. As a documentation here is what it was.
I read some posts here on the forums that mounted USB sticks or flash cards would make Aperture super slow while importing photos. I have Boot Camp installed and have a Windows 7 partition on the same drive as my MacOS. So, out of curiosity, I forced it to unmount as the partition automatically gets mounted by the OS.
Voilà! That seems to have been the culprit! Now both Aperture and Logic (which also had to think 2 minutes before it decided to start) display the splash screen in seconds and start like they are supposed to.
Make sure you have no drives mounted when starting these applications. This helped bringing down the starting time from 2 minutes and 20 seconds to just a few seconds. Of course, if you have your library on another drive you have to have it mounted. Maybe it only takes so long when you have Boot Camp and an NTFS partition. But if you experience lags starting these apps, try unmounting what you don't need.

  • Why the **** does it take so long?

i just had my iphone replaced, and all i wanted to do was "clone" the old contents from the backup to the new iphone. that should be sweet and simple, and relatively quick, right?
well, so far it's taken over 2 hours, and it's still not finished.
the first part was relatively easy, i just asked to "restore" the backup, except that the time to complete estimates were low by a factor of 4 or 5, i.e. "less than a minute" took about 5. but all my apps were still missing.
the second round, after pressing "sync", took another hour!
i'm only using about 3 gb of the 32 gb available, so why can't itunes just blast a simple copy of everything over top of the contents, at a full 480 mbps? to my way of thinking, that should take about a minute (480 x 10 x 6 seconds for 3gb).
i kinda hope to be able to put more stuff on the iphone, and maybe one day even fill it up. but i hate to think that it'll take 24 hours to backup and restore the sucker.
two hours for 3 gb is really not very good!

I'm having the same issue - my iPhone was replaced today after an error 23 hardware fault and the restore has now been running for 1 hour 40 minutes. Throughout it has said it has anything from 4 to 10 minutes remaining and the progress bar hardly moves. I've used about 6Gb of the 16Gb available but I'm shocked it's taking so long!
I'm also very surprised that Apple haven't responded to your post with any explanation for why it should take so long. I hope my restore is finished in less than 4 hours (assuming a rate of about 1.5Gb per hour...)

  • Why is my order taking that long to process and to be shipped?

Well its almost going to be 5 days and my order still says processing
in the details it said that it would be shipped from 1-3 days and that it will be delived from Delivers   Jan 11 - Jan 13  via 2-3 Business Days
all i want to know is why does it take so long to process it should be shipped by now.

No one here works for Apple nor does Apple visit this message board.  We are all end users like yourself helping each other out.
Call the vendor where you placed your order and ask them about the "process" delay.

  • Why Does Captivate 4 Take So Long to Close?

I’m using Captivate 4. Sometimes it takes a long time to close a project and the next time I open Captivate, it takes a long time to open, moving very slow through “loading content.” Once I remove and re-install, and then update the patch, it works. But then it does it again. Someone said that it has to do with a corrupt preference or settings file, so when I re-loaded, I didn’t make any changes like adding for example, the alignment bar (which I usually use). Is there anything else that can be done? Does Captivate 5 have a fix for this by any chance?

    Welcome to our community
Unless something has gone catastrophically wrong, you should never have to perform the uninstall/reinstall/reapply the patch hokey pokey. So that's just wasted effort. There is a simple way to perform what I call the "Factory Reset".
I recently described how to do this in the thread linked below:
I might question why this is needed at all. Perhaps you are unaware of some things that help you avoid issues with Captivate.
    For example:
How many slides are in your projects? We normally recommend keeping projects somewhere between 50-65 slides as a rule of thumb guideline for the upper limit.
Where exactly are your projects residing when you make edits? Frequently we see folks working with projects on a network drive. This is less than optimal and will often cause issues and slowness and project corruption. Work locally off your C drive and periodically copy the project the network server to be backed up.
Hopefully something here was helpful to you... Rick

  • Find out why an SSIS package takes so long execute ?

Is there any guideline which shows how to find out why a package is taking "too long" to execute ? I guess one situation could be that an SQL query (if you have one) is taking too long. Perhaps the query could be optimized or perhaps its table
could use indexes. Any more scenarios which can make execution take too long ?

I guess it would be better to google "ssis package running slowly" or something like that and read each post to learn reasons for slow execution. Some links I got -

  • Why does my iphone take so long to turn back on when the battery runs out?

Ok, granted, I am guilty of not always plugging my iphone in when it gives me the low battery warning. But why does it take SOOOO long to get enough charge to turn back on? If apple is taking suggestions, then my suggestion is that you should just be able to plug it in and it should be ready to use within a minute, like other cell phones. I've had my battery die mid phone call, and then had to wait for it to get enough charge to call back. I know its maybe only about 5-7 minutes but that seems like forever to return a dropped call. Does this happen to anyone else or is something wrong with my phone? Any suggestions?

Apple set the default to 10 minutes before you can use the iPhone. After 2 minutes you'll get an image of the low battery. It's in the iPhone Users Guide, page 49.

  • Why does FiOS internet take so long to connect when I boot my computer?

Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2.    M424WR modem/router.    Every time I turn on my computer or even if I reboot, internet takes up to 2 minutes to be able to use.    My computer doesn't detect any internet connection until, it seems, it's good and ready.   The modem is NEVER turned off and everything else in the house dependant on the internet connection doesn't have a problem.   Phones, wireless lap tops, or the PS3.    Why does it do this?  I have put IHA messenger on manual in startup.  But I still get the same problem.   Is there any way to fix this?  It's so annoying.
    And Please, Verizon support, don't send me any private messages that say to call verizon support or asking me to send you my verizon account info.  I absolutely HATE that when you guys do that.   I'm not spending half my day on hold, and you don't need to know that to answer why the computer is taking so long to find the internet connection.   If you don't know why it's doing it, then say you don't know why, or better yet, don't even respond at all.  {Please keep your posts courteous}

I have both an XP machine and a Win7 laptop. Both take time after booting to access the network.  The culprit is Norton (Symantec). In both cases it runs a security check BEFORE it allows network access.
You may not have Symantec products installed, but if you have any other antivirus software it it probably doing the same thing.
