Why aperture running very slow?

I just installed additional ram and the other day aperture was running extremely slow. The only other application was iphoto.
How much CPU power does aperture require?

Nothing in my experience would make me draw the same conclusion (that the reporting of your Aperture Library as "Other" is why Aperture is running slowly). You report that your Library is on an external drive connected via USB. Is this USB 2 or USB 3?
The consensus is to put your Library on your fastest (lowest latency and highest throughput) drive. This is almost always your system drive. If your Library does not fit on your system drive, you are advised to move some or all of your Images' Master from the Library to a second drive using "File→Relocate Masters". If you want help with these set-ups, post back.

Aperture running VERY SLOW

I have a Mac Pro with 12 GB memory. My Aperture library is ~500 GB with ~89,500 photos. It took Aperture 3 overnight to convert my Aperture 2 library, hung itself at 69% completion, then took > 12 hours to process "faces". Nothing else was running on my Mac Pro during this time. It was using at least 8 GB of memory during the processes. Memory hog? Wow. What are you folks doing with a less beefy Mac? I won't even bring this beast near my MacBookPro.

I thought you may be interested in my experiences, as I consider myself a "normal" professional user, with normal kit and normal work patterns.
First, my kit. I use a Macbook Pro 17" 2.4GHz, 2Gb RAM, running Snow Leopard. My Aperture library is 300Gb in size on a 1Tb drive. The vault is on an identical drive, and they are all connected by Firewire 800. I honestly think this is a typical setup for a average pro photographer in the real world who isn't Annie Liebowitz. I have used Aperture 2 since it came out, and am really impressed with it. Means I hardly ever use PS now!
And now, the update...
I followed the instructions, installed, and restarted. I got the "Update your Library" message, and clicked OK. The bar progressed its stately way, and around 48 HOURS later, it reached the end. Through the whole process, I kept Activity Monitor running, and I can see why people think their machine has frozen. But it hasn't, it's just working away and swapping files.
SO, I thought that was that. Did a bit of work, fired up Aperture again, and got the spinning "Processing..." indicator. Aperture works, albeit very sluggishly, so I opened the Activity window in Aperture, and it said "Processing Library"! Haven't I just spent 48 hours doing that??? SO... 60 hours later, it finishes that, and Aperture now works as I would expect. Now the sensible thing to do is that having checked the Library and seen everything is there, is to back it up to the Vault. Now here I am 12 hours later, and it isn't even half done yet! Activity Monitor shows me that it is transferring data. It's certainly still working, one file at a time. I cannot open Aperture's Activity window whilst it is backing up the Library to the Vault.
Observation One: Apple's own observation that "this will take a while, maybe overnight..." is way off in the real world. Have they actually tested this with real photographers in the real world, rather than advertising agency high flyers who have the absolute best of all kit?
Observation Two: When you first open Aperture 3, the prominent buttons on the toolbar for Facebook, Flickr, Faces and Places tell you that Apple has lost the plot. These are all good in iPhoto, aimed at amateurs who love gizmos. Working professionals know where they took the photos, who is in them, and how they want to output them. This approach seems to tell us that the marketing department has overruled common sense in an attempt to get the semi-pros (a polite term for wannabees) to upgrade from iPhoto. In burdening the program with useless amateur features they have made a laughing stock of a useful professional application. In making updating so arcane and lengthy, they have completely shattered the "it just works" mantra. It will take more than a bit of Jobs magic to save Apple from this debacle.
I had it building the Vault this morning. It had got to huge size, much bigger than I would expect, so I Force Quit (nothing else worked) and had a look see. It was building an entirely new Vault, leaving the Ap2 vault untouched. So much for the "Update Vault" command. So I erased the 1Tb disc completely, opened Aperture3 Action window, and set off again.
Now, nine hours later, the Vault is almost exactly three quarters the size of the Library, and the Action shows "Copying Masters". EXCEPT... the progress in the Action window tells me it is only 30% done. Strange but true.
If updating your software brings perfectly normal kit to it's knees, there is something seriously wrong somewhere. One of the reasons I don't use Winders is that I don't expect to pay money to be a beta tester. I never thought I'd live to see the day I wrote that.

Aperture runs VERY slow

i'm running version 2 on a dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with 2,5 GB DDR SDRAM and using Mac OS X 10.4.11.
i run it with NOTHING else running and it take forever, the beach ball starts to spin for a while and then finishes the task.
any suggestions? i mainly work in RAW.

The stock graphics card on G5s cripples Aperture. You need an advanced card appropriate for the box (the 8800?).

Aperture running very slow under Lion

Lift and stamp adjustments takes forever and Processing of images takes hours under Lion OS.....may have to switch back to Snow Lepard

My Aperture 3 is medium fast after a reboot (8-core MacPro, 6 GIG), but starts to get really slow after the swap file size gets above 100 meg). I then need to reboot BEFORE Aperture freezes up on me.
A3/64 was FAST under Snow Leopard... still got slow once in a while. It is happening way more often under Lion.
There are about 10+ threads on this -- Apple, please acknolege you are aware of the problem and working on a fix

I am having the same problem. Did turning off iCloud work? Did you just turn everything off or did you actually delete the account off your iPod?

Aperture 3.5 running Very Slow

Aperture is now running very slow and get the spinning wheel alot, even worse whe trying to open NIK add ons, didn't get this before the upgrade, anyone else experiancing this ? also unable to import an old aperture Libary into 3.5, i get the message that it was created with an older version !

I have restored my library after crash and now i have 250.000 previews to recreate (very big library : 2To but no problem before aperture 3.5) it's very long, about 20.000 previews by day.

Have you tried resetting your PRAM?
Shut the Mac down.
Holding the Cmd+Opt+P+R keys, press the power button.
Listen for the "startup chime" to sound three times and release the keys.
It should run better after it finishes booting up.

On opening up PSE9 it runs very slow, Why?

When I open up my recently installed PSE9 program it runs very slow. all photos etc load up and are visable but it almost feels like there is a program running in the background. The cursor moves very slow and in a delayed way. I mostly have photos and very few videos, projects etc but just in case I go to view and uncheck vidoes, PDF, projects etc just in case this is what is slowing everything down but it doesn"t change anything. Nothing else is running while I am in PSE. Previuosly I was working with version 8 and I did not have this problem. Can someone help me with this this annoying problem that is keeping me from using PSE 9. Thanks Rey

Thats a start. Why are you using Chrome? Of the three main browsers Chrome is probably the worst. Try Safari or Firefox. I'm not familiar with GlimmerBlocker or BackBlaze, you might try disabling them to see if things improve. I don't see any other software related issues.
Edit: FlashPlayer is out of date. Update that by entering www.adobe.com into your browsers address bar and follow the links ro FP. Never click on a link to update software.....too many redirects to tainted installers.

New T61 TP running very slow

New to this board, so patience please!
3 weeks ago purchased a new T61 w/2.0GHz Intel duo core, 2 GB RAM and a 150GB HDD. Running XP Pro. Like the weight and feel but the performance is very, very slow. Takes 3-5 minutes to boot and when toggling between programs (ie: Outlook to Excel to IE) takes 30 sec - 1 minute to switch.
Have run "services.msc" and note there are 60+ services running! Anyone know why so many are running and which are non-essential? Have also disabled most of start-up options via msconfig. Still running very slow.
My former Asus W7 was much faster (but the battery life was very poor. And not nearly as rugged as the Lenova).
Any help much appreciated. Need speed!

Newer ThinkPads are coming with loads of stuff you don't need: Trials for Office 2007, Picassa, and a plethora of other tools you may or may not need ALL with auto updates turned on and ALL trying to update at the same time when you start.
So the second thing to do once indexing is complete is to look through Add Remove Programs, and uninstall what you do not need. For example, I did not need:
Office 2007 Trial (I use Office 2003)
Picassa (I don't need it)
Symantec Trial License (Good product, but I have a Corp. license)
CSS (disable)
ThinkVantage Updater (A tool that has NEVER worked properly)
Further, I turned off (prevented from starting) a number of things like Sonic update, and then turned off the update functions in a number of other tools (SUN Java, Adobe, Windows Auto Update, and so on). Automatic updates can really slow down a machine.
Also, in Internet Explorer, reduce (by 75 percent or more) the amount of cache it sets aside for temporary files. Once that was all done, the T60 I was working on starts reasonable quickly (as fast as needed) and performs very well.

Running Very Slow

I have had this issue for a 1 month now. Been to an authorized apple repair shop, no satisfaction, still runs very slow. It's a late 2009 imac with the latest software, no updates available.
Starting any application is painfully slow. Never had this problem before, ran like a top until last month. I have no ide why.
Any ideas?

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

To add on to Corky02 answer:
The recent Aperture release AP 3.3.x is very efficient, both on Lion and Mountain Lion. But you need a decent hardware to support it. The older Macs will have problems with the storage and CPU requirements. For good performance on large raw images plenty of RAM is important, at least 4GB, but 8GB would be much better, and your library should be on a fast disk, preferably on an internal drive. And don't let the system drive get too full.
Many reports about Aperture being slow are due to putting the Aperture library onto slow disks or acessing the original image files over the network, insufficient RAM, or corrupted or ill-designedAperture databases.
Aperture excels at all kinds of image processing that can be considered image developement - raw processing and color/lighting adjustments, but does not do compositing. If you are shooting raw and want professional image developement I'd recommend to do this in Aperture and not in iPhoto - you will have much more control over this in Aperture (after a steep learning curve). You can also repair and retouch the image to correct minor blamishes. For graphics compositing and inpainting you can set up an external editor and send your images from Aperture to this external editor - any of the editors Corky recommended would be o.k. for this.

But Aperture is a professional apllication, not "plug and play". You should only consider it, if you are willing to spend some time on learning to use it properly and are willing to work your way through the manual.
