Why Apple hates Home/End/Page Up/Page Down?

open a terminal, type in a command and I want to go to the beginning of the line and then back to the end of the line.  How do you do this?  I've never understood why Apple doesn't have a backspace and a delete button as well as a simple home and end.
Any pointers would be a appreciated.

I wish you'd actually go try what you're posting here.  Ctrl A and Ctrl E don't work either.  I'm also well aware of what terminal is and how to use it.  I'm also well aware of keyboards and how to use them. Comments of not putting keys on a keyboard because there is no room is frankly BS because smaller computers have more keys on them than Apple puts.  With that being said, whether Apple thinks you ever use Home and End keys doesn't mean people don't.  I have people that work with me that refuse to use Apple computers simply because they hate their keyboards and how the leave things out for absolutely no good reason.  I'd love to see the actual research where anyone has ever concluded you didn't need those keys.
Sorry, I just get tired of hearing excuses for lame decisions made by Apple.  I live in the terminal and I make mistakes and need a quick way to jump back and forth on the command line.  Every single OS out there gives me this ability, EXCEPT APPLE!.  I spent almost $3500 buying a new MBPr and accessories and something so basic missing all this time drives me crazy.
Sorry, there are no excuses!

  • Mail Version 2.1.3 (753.1/753) - home / end / page up / page down broken

    Hi Gang,
Since upgrading to 10.4.11, Mail Version 2.1.3 is no longer responding to home, end, page up and page down keys. It's very annoying to have to use the mouse to page down, shift-select, and delete to remove un-wanted text from messages.
Have others experienced this, and found a fix?
    Derek

In every version of Mac OS X I've used, since 10.2, the Home and End keys have never done anything in Mail, and nobody else I know has ever reported them working for anything, either. So I think you may be mistaking having used that key in Mail. .
However, Page Up and Page Down do work, as I use them every day. Are you saying that those two keys do nothing at all, or just not what you expect? And how do you have your Mail window setup (single pane, with a list of messages to scroll through and double-click to select, or with two panes--the message list on top and the selected message appearing below it)? That would also make a difference as to when Page Up/Page Down work.
Try both views, and if Page Up/Page Don't work in either, post back with more details.

  • Where are Home, End, Page Up, Page Down on MBP keyboard?

I just bought a MBP-15 after spending my entire computer life with Windows.  I have a fairly sophisticated spreadsheet that I created in Excel that I now want to use in Numbers.  But I'm hung up on the simplest thing - Home & End.  I've read other postings and guides related to the keyboard, but everyone else seems to indicate that there are already Home & End keys (and Page Up/Page Down keys) on the keyboard.  I have none - at least none that I can find.  I just have the standard MBP keyboard, including the F1-F12 function keys (plus fn, option, control, command, & arrows).  All of the key remapping posts talk about their use in text like a Safari e-mail.  For spreadsheets, Windows lets me take a formula in 1 cell, ctrl-c to copy it, then shift-end-down and ctrl-v to paste that new formula to the end of the existing column.  How is this done in the Mac world?  Very frustrating so far.  If it matters, I'm using Numbers '09 with Lion.  Any and all help appreciated.

    Home: fn-left arrow
    End: fn-right arrow
    Page Up: fn-up arrow
    Page down: fn-down arrow
Actions in Numbers may not match those in Excel.
"For spreadsheets, Windows lets me take a formula in 1 cell, ctrl-c to copy it, then shift-end-down and ctrl-v to paste that new formula to the end of the existing column."
(Enter and confirm the formula in the initial cell if it's not already there.)
    Select the initial cell.
Scroll to the bottom row using the thumb on the vertical scroll bar.
Shift-click on the bottom cell to select it and all cells between it and the initial cell.
Go Insert > Fill> Fill Down.
    OR
Select the initial cell (containing the formula)
    Copy (command-C)
Scroll to the last cell as above.
    Shift-click on the last cell.
    Paste (command-V)
Numbers design model favors documents containing several small single purpose tables, not large ones. The maximum size of an individual table is 255 columns by 65355 rows. In practical terms, then limits are much smaller in terms of deteriorating performance speed.

  • Possible to create Fn + Arrow key combos to emulate Home, End, etc.?

    Hey all,
Lenovo puts the Fn key on the lower-left corner of the keyboard. Apple also does this, and pressing Fn + the arrow keys emulate various page nav keys like Home, End, Page Down, and Page Up. I have always found these features to be very helpful because these key combos are much easier to reach than the small or non-existent Home, etc. keys on smaller keyboards.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to assign Fn arrow key combos on the Lenovo W500 line of Thinkpads. They currently seem unassigned although some documentation says they are used to advance track, etc. in Windows Media Player. I wonder if AutoHotKey would permit this functionality.
Anyway, I'd appreciate any advice that anyone can provide. Thanks.

AFAIK, Fn doesn't show up as a modifier to the system; it's handled by the keyboard/BIOS directly.
AutoHotkey might work if you can intercept media commands and replace it with a key combination of your choosing. It's probably your best bet.

  • Why did HP remove Home, End, Pg Up & Pg Dn keys?

Just got the new TM2-2050 tablet as a warranty replace for the tx1000 model I had for 2.5 years.  Overall I'm happy with the machine as it's faster, has Windows 7 and doesn't heat up like a hot pack.
I'm surprised HP took out the bluetooth though and while I can survive without it, was disappointed that the CD/DVD drive was removed too.
The biggest thing I found weird was that they had eliminated the Home, End, Page Up & Page Down keys! Maybe I use the keyboard (and those keys) more than the average user but I was shocked.  If they had simply made the Function keys smaller (like they were on all other previous tablet models) they could have easily kept those keys on the system.
I've only used it for a couple of days so far so we'll see how much I miss them.  Does anyone know of a way to create keyboard shortcuts to replace Home & End, etc?

    Hi,
Press at one time key combination:
    " Fn + Left Arrow  " -> Home
    " Fn + Right Arrow  " -> End
    " Fn + Up Arrow  " -> Page Up
    " Fn + Down Arrow  "  -> Page Down

  • Safari bookmarks screen - home/end/pageup/pagedown non-functional?

Is it just me, or does Safari not respond to the keys Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down when in the Bookmarks screen?
I can't believe they overlooked such simple, standardized functionality...

    Hi
it's not just you - there's at least two of us..... I bought this ,my first mac in May last year with 10.4 & the keys mentioned did not respond then - nor have any updates changed this.
It was of very little matter to me, so I've never looked into why - but I do know that Ctrl-Page-up/down works in the Bookmarks screen.

  • Page up/page down etc doesn't work in XP

The Home, End, Page Up and Page Down keys no longer work correctly in Firefox since version 5.x (I'm fairly sure that 4.x was fine). This only seems to affect my XP laptop: versions 5 and up seem fine on two Win 7-64 machines I have access to.
As an example of this functionality, go to [http://www.soundonsound.com/ the sound on sound website]. None of the above keys have any affect when pressed. However, if I hit Ctrl-End, the cursor(?!) jumps to the block of text at the foot of the page (copyright info etc). It is then locked there: i.e. hitting Page Up or Home will only jump the cursor to the start of this block of text, not to the head of the page. Hitting End from there will jump the cursor to the end of the current line.
I think that this issue is related to the appearance of this cursor (blinking pipe symbol) in areas of a webpage that are not text entry controls. For example, if I got to click the (mouse) cursor on a textbox/textarea but miss slightly, the text-edit cursor appears half in and half out of the box, but it doesn't allow text entry in that position. Randomly clicking the mouse on any web page will cause this pipe-style cursor to appear next to the nearest block of text, or half-in and half-out of the nearest textbox, etc.
Not a fatal flaw, I know, but it is pretty frustrating when trying to navigate long webpages/forums and the like.
    Thanks,
    Si

    Thanks cor-el,
That's exactly what I've done - by accident, clearly!

  • Why can't my mid2009 mac book pro upgrade to Yosemite?  It sounds like Apple is using a page from microsoft to be a new computer....

I am trying to understand why Apple is not allowing mid2009 macbook pro's to upgrade to yosemite.  What else is Apple not going to support?  It looks like Apple had taken a page from the microsoft book.  This is really frustrating.

Let me give you a slightly different perspective than everyone else here.  You are using an unsecured wireless network, which means that all your network traffic is easily available for viewing by anyone else using that network.  That's bad.  Very bad, for you, unless you absolutely trust everyone who lives within range of this network.  So stop doing it.
As to the Mac not connecting, wireless networking is simply too complex for any reasonable answer without more information.  There are many possible error points, and as often as not it's the Mac that can connect and the Windows PC that cannot.  Since you can't give us any information about the configuration of the neighbor's network, and can't make any changes to it, we can't do much to help you troubleshoot it.

  • My up and down arrows as well as page up and page down no longer work properly only when using firefox. Page up and down function more like the "home" and "end" keys as do the arrow keys.

Honestly I'm not sure if these began just after I updated FF to the current release, but it's been happening for at least 2 weeks. The arrow keys and page up and page down keys all work as if I'm pressing the 'home' and 'end' keys on my keyboard. This is only when using FF. Please contact me if you need more clarification. Thanks in advance!

  • Is it possible for me to replace the present pictures on the Apple TV home page with my own personal pics?

Is it possible to replace the present pictures on the Apple TV home page(floating) with my own?

    Welcome to the Apple Computer.
You can't change the stock photos, but you can add your own and view those instead.
First add your photos, you can do this from the advanced menu in iTunes. Once you've added photos to share, go to settings > screensaver on the Apple TV and select the photos to use as a screensaver.

  • ThinkPad Compact USB Keyboard with TrackPoint: Suggestion: Fn+Arrow keys as Page Up/Down/Home/End

As it is now, Fn + up/down/left/right do not send any keys to the OS. Would it be possible to update the keyboard firmware to send the following:
    Fn-Up: Page up
    Fn-Down: Page down
    Fn-Left: Home
    Fn-Right: End
I think this is common in laptop keyboards, i know my macbook air does this, and my logitech K760 does it as well. It is a lot more convenient than accessing the home/end keys on top of the keyboard (the page up/down placement is easily accessible already).
If it is not possible in the current version, at least consider it for the next revision - i would buy a new keyboard for it :-)

Yes, i realize it could be confusing for some to have two ways of accessing the same keys.
The issue i have with the thinkpad layout is that the keys are split apart - i like having page up/down and home/end clustered together for navigating - with the thinkpad layout, half the keys are in the lower half of the keyboard, and the other half in the top.
Also, since arrow keys are also often used for navigating, it makes sense to me to keep them together - for example, "go to the end of the line and select the last word" can be accomplished without moving the right hand from the arrow keys, and the left hand using Shift/Fn/Control

why has apple dumbed pages down. It is now useful for school kids and maybe party invitations, not for professional work. Now I have to use Word to do my work. This is very disappointing.

Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Export your Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx and trash/archive Pages 5.
Then rate/review Pages 5 in the App Store where other users might see it before committing.
I also suggest you let your disappontment be known wherever Pages 5 is reviewed. There is an unfortunate tendency for people who never use Pages or barely use it to parrot the old line that if Apple removed it nobody was using the features.
This is the same asinine thinking that suggests if you never live in or vist any part of your city that it is OK for it to be bulldozed overnight.
