Why apple (Macbook) and not Sony Vaio, hp,etc....?¿

Hello everybody! Hope u r doing well in this pre-Christmas time.
I was thinking on "buying" a new laptop for Christmas although I am not very sure which one to order. The thing is that I have never been a Mac user but I'm starting to reconsider this since I find Apple's laptops extremely interesting and amazing.
My main doubt is about the main differences between Apple and Microsoft. I have always used Microsoft Windows in all my previous pc's or laptops. Is there a real improvement in a good way, innovation?what are the main differences between both ways of understanding computing and entertainment? I truly think a 64
Mb video card controller is not a very good deal. Is the CPU speed and screen brightness and resolution such a great thing a lot of people say?

I switched 6 months ago, having had two beautiful Sony VAIOs before I bought the macbook. I decided on the macbook rather than another VAIO because 1) the VAIOs were way more expensive, 2) I've never been thrilled with Sony support or service, and 3) I was curious about the Mac OS and why people love it so much. I wasn't unhappy with Windows, and if the Macbook couldn't use Windows, I'm not sure I would have made the switch.
I never use Windows now. Mac OS is much more customizable. I use tons of freeware in my daily work and play, which I never would have dared do on my VAIOs for fear of viruses. These programs help me design my computer to work the way I want it to work. Everything on this computer looks good and feels good.
A second reason I'm so happy with my mac is the great support. When I needed repairs for discoloration and RSD, they were easy to get done and done quickly - halfway around the world from where I bought the computer! The community on these boards has been fantastic at helping me solve every single newbie problem I've had. And, like I said, there's lots of professional-quality freeware donated to mac users by first-rate designers. How good is that?
I would say that the smallest differences between Apple and PCs are in the hardware. My macbook is gorgeous, but VAIOs are, too. Screens on both computers are sharp and beautiful. My macbook has had some hardware problems, and so did my VAIOs. Where I would look for the differences are in the OS and support, and in these areas, Mac excels. Where do PCs excel? Games.

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:

 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue...
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
Step 4
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable.
Step 5
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately.
Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the Mac OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

likely because they sell them at a price where they lose money but depend on rental and buying of media

I assume you have the Apple TV 1.
Often a restart of ALL your equipment will help, it may also be a result of instaling or updating security software (check your security settings).
If problems persist, navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can sync it back afterwards, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.

To complete the backup, i will be using the Time Machine application. Does this application wipe out all of the existing data on the external hard drive, or will it create a new "folder" for the backup?

No, but as steve359 states you should use a dedicated hard drive for backups. It you need a temporary backup then you can use the drive provided it has sufficient space for all your data on the hard drive.
When Time Machine finds that the drive has data on it already it may decide to erase the drive before continuing, which is another reason to use a dedicated drive.

As I already said, you have to create an iCloud account on an iOS device or Mac. If you don't have one, you can't create and iCloud account. Apple states this on the page you downloaded the iCloud control panel from (iCloud Control Panel 3.1 for Windows), where it says:
"Note: To create an iCloud account you need an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later, or a Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later."

Search for shared library is impossible, as far as I know. Searches supported - are local and internet.

Imessage using apple id and not phone number

When using imessage it is being sent from my apple id and not from my phone number, when I go in to the message settings my phone number is greyed out. Then I went into the called id and my phone number is the one listed as the caller ID yet evertying is still being sent through my apple ID

check in settings > messages > send & recieve and look for start new conversation from and you should be able to change it from there

You got it.
Notes - if notes are created in icloud notes (you may have multiple notes accounts) - icloud notes and only icloud are synced over all your devices and icloud server, so if you want to see those on the server you can go and manage (edit) on www.icloud.com.
Since notes synchronize by using same IMAP email server - turning them "ON" will prompt you to create mail address.
To add to that you do not have 10.8 that has it's own notes app, so your notes go to Notes folder in your icloud/me/mac mail and synched by your mail server.
