Why are alpha/numeric keys inoperative on aluminum apple wireless keyboard

This is a follow on to previous topic that i answered.
I was able to get my wireless keyboard partially operational.
It is paired and only partially functionall
• Alpha numeric keys do not work
• Delete Key (backward) and fn-Delete (forward) work
• Arrow keys work
• Function keys and
• Mouse keys are working 8 (up), k (down), u (left), o (right), 7 (up diagonal left), l (down diagonal right), j (down diagonal left, 9 (up diagonal right). i is the mouse click.
i am leaving this up for the benefit of other Wireless Keyboard users.
THE APPARENT PROBLEM IS IN THE UNIVERSAL ACCESS PREFERENCES.
I just hit Opt key five times and now the Wireless Keyboard is working very well. The mouse keys are now normal keys for Alpha Numerics. Note i am typing 8, k, u, o, 7, l, j, 9, i. . Now do Opt five times.
(typed on my USB keyboard) There is a alarm sound when the change over occurs. Now the Alpha Numerics are inoperative and the mouse keys work. Remember that the wireless keyboard does not have a number pad. Therefore; when mouse keys are activated the above alphanumeric keys take the place of number pad 8, 2. 4. 6, 7, 3, 1, 9, and 5.
Now back to the wireless keyboard. From top to bottom, left to right lower case keys:
zxcvbnm,./ asdfghjkl;', qwertyuiop[]\ `1234567890-=
From top to bottom, left to UPPER CASE keys:
ZXCVBNM,./ ASDFGHJKL:" QWERTYUIOP{}| ~!@#$%^&*()_+
So i answered my question and leave it for your benefit. One other comment:
When i first set up the keyboard and spent half a day yesterday thinking i was getting nowhere because the green ON light was out. Chalk that up to what i consider poor documentation which didn't describe normal operating conditions.
It isn't supposed to light except during initial setup when it flashes. The caps lock key lights when it is pressed SO THAT IS A GOOD INDICATION THE KEYBOARD IS ACTIVE.

General, you are a genius. This happened to me just last week. I racked my brain trying to figure it out. Apple Care had no idea and recommended I exchange my keyboard for a new one, which I did. The problem still persisted. I tried deleting my bluetooth plist and using a USB keyboard which resulted in disaster when I used the number pad and suddenly my mouse no longer worked.
I scoured the literature looking for some sort of key-lock function and found zip. Apple Care told me to take in the entire CPU. Unsatisfied with that, I researched further and found your thread. I told Apple Care they need to tell Apple to make a note of this in their literature!
Thanks again!

  • FN key not working on Apple Wireless Keyboard

EDIT: Found the culprit: USB Overdrive was taking over the external keyboard. After disabling USB Overdrive for the keyboard, the FN key started working again.
I have Macbook Air (Mid 2013) connected to a Cinema Display and Apple Wireless Keyboard. MBA is running the latest Yosemite (10.10).
I tried using FN + Delete on the wireless keyboard to forward delete but it didn't work, it just deleted. I tried other keyboard shortcuts that require the use of FN key, and none of them work either. But when I try these directly on the MBA's keyboard, the FN key works perfectly there, just not on the wireless keyboard.
I've removed the bluetooth keyboard and tried reconnecting, restarting computer, login out and back in. Nothing works. Anyone have any ideas?

I disabled "Any Keyboard, Any Application" and "Any Other, Any Application" but I still could not use my Fn key on my Apple Wireless Keyboard. Uninstalling (removing the driver) restored Fn key functionality. In addition downgrading from 3.1 to 3.0.2 on Yosemite also solved this issue.
Did you actually try what you wrote?
I should also note that the Fn key on my rMBP's internal keyboard works with 3.1, oddly enough, but the Apple Wireless Keyboard's Fn key does not.

  • Trying to use function keys (like windows) on apple wireless keyboard for ipad, as well as arrow keys.

I am connecting to my work PC through my ipad. My main program i use for work is a DAS based (ancient, i know.) Anyways, i have to be able to use function keys, i can touch the screen so if i can not it isn't the end of the world. But it would make things MUCH more easier. Is there a way to program the F1-F12 keys on the wireless keyboard to use like windows, rather than the brightness/volume/play buttons.
Also, my arrow keys don't seem to work right. If i am using notepad, they don't work, unless i have entered down 6 lines, the arrows will work as far as those 6 lines, but won't go down on there own. If i am on the internet and there is a drop down menu, the arrow keys don't work either. As well as in my work program, they don't work at all, it's as if the arrow keys don't register.
    Help?!

Just added information. In my work program, i can use the onscreen keyboard (but it takes up half the screen so i can not see what i am doing. From that keyboard, and can toggle back and forth from the regular keyboard, the FN screen for function keys, and the CTRL keyboard. This is why i am confused as to why the function keys and arrows will not work on the wireless, yet they have the keyboard on the screen.

  • Stuck key (not physically) on Apple Wireless Keyboard

I went away on holiday for a month, and when I came back my Apple Wireless (BT) Keyboard sticks on the "U" key. It takes 2-3 presses for the key to appear on screen, and when one 'u' appears, it sticks (uuuu...) until I hit another key. I have not changed anything, have not installed any software updates, etc. I tried deleting all BT devices, restarting, then adding the keyboard back. Same result. I tried applying the BT wireless keyboard patch (which claims to fix this issue) and still nothing. Nobody used the keyboard while I was on vacation. It's just over a year old... does anyone have any idears? Thanks in advance.

I am also having a "U" problem with my wireless keyboard. The only way to get a capital U is to press the Cap key. The Shift key doesn't do the trick. The small u does not work as well as the rest of the keys but I don't seem to have the exact small problem as you do. My keyboard is only 3 months old. I called Apple and they want me to complete wipe out my hard drive and reload all the software. I'm not ready to do that yet so I am "suffering in silence".

  • My apple wireless keyboard got wet a year ago i sprayed the cleaning spray on it some of the keys are working but some of the keys aren"t working. it got sprayed a year ago What should i do??? Can it be recovered plz tell?

I sprayed it a year ago i really like the keyboard and i really need it can it be recovered??? My apple wireless keyboard got wet a year ago i sprayed the cleaning spray on it some of the keys are working but some of the keys aren"t working. it got sprayed a year ago What should i do??? Can it be recovered plz tell?

There is almost no chance it can be recovered, except at a cost far greater than a new keyboard.  Once wet, spraying with a cleaner will not do any good and most likely will make the situation worse.
Best thing at this point is go to your Apple store, or the on-line store, and buy a new keyboard.  Water damage is not covered by the warranty or AppleCare.

  • Trouble with keys on apple wireless keyboard and MBP

I have attached my Apple wireless keyboard to my MBP and I want to use it with the onboard screen. It properly synced, and I know it reads the keyboard because the F keys work, and the delete button works, and it even can wake the computer from sleep mode. However the problem is quite simple, the alpha keys do not work. I can turn up my brightness, or volume cycle through my "spaces" on leopard but am still unable to type. I have looked all over for other cases of this and can not find it. Is it possible that the apple wireless MUST be used with an external monitor only? I have not attempted that yet because I have been away from my studio for a few weeks.
If anyone could shed some light on this situation it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You.

The "wireless mouse/keyboard firmware update 1.1" is for the old white plastic wireless mice and keyboards , Sean. Is the one you are trying to use one of these, or is it one of the aluminium ones?
If it is the aluminium one, then the update you might need is Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0 - http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/aluminumkeyboardfirmwareupdate10.html
None of the updates should be needed to prevent the sort of problem you report though.
Is this keyboard newly purchased, or one that you have had for a while and that ahs worked in the past? It may simply be defective.
The only other thing I can think of, apart from conflict with a third party keyboard driver or the like, is a corrupted system file of some kind, in which case an "archive and install" of the OS might be needed to fix it I'm afraid.

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard and annoyance with fn and backspace key

    Hi everybody,
Just took delivery of this beautiful Apple Wireless Keyboard but having only one problem with it. I've figured out how in System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse/Keyboard it's possible to check the box which allows the F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys but when it's checked I also have to use the fn key to make the Backspace key work like a normal backspace. If I don't use the fn key the Backspace key will eat any type in front of the curser instead of backing up and eating the type behind it. Why is this..? I mean the Backspace Key isn't even on the same row as all the F keys are so why am I having to use the fn key to change the function of the Backspace key..? Actually it would be nicer if the function of with or without the fn key was reversed. Anyone know how I can change that..?
    paul

    Ahhh forget it..
I realized having that option checked made other keys do screwy things as well unless I used the fn key with them so I've gone back to using the fn key only when I need to use the F keys..

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard - Shift + 'r' key not working. It doesn't capitalise the letter. Can someone help please. Thank you.

    Hi all,
I am having some problem with the Apple Wireless Keyboard. It has not problem connecting to both my iPad mini / iPhone 4S.
The problem comes when I start to type with it. All the keys are functioning will, except when I am trying to capitalise the letter 'r'.
I tried using Shift + r. It doesn't work, regardless whether I use the left or right Shift key.
Any someone help please. Thank you.

If your Macbook is less than a year old, it is under warranty. A repair of of a problem of this kind would be free. So, if you have a warranty, have the problem fixed by Apple.
If your Macbook is more than one year old, please tell us what operating system you are running, and any other information that would help understand what is going on.
If you do get the keyboard to work for a short time, long enough to post back, please unlock the "caps lock" button.

  • HT5633 use of fn key with Apple Wireless Keyboard MC184LL/B

Are the rules for using the fn key with the most recent
Apple Wireless Keyboard MC184LL/B posted anywhere on Apple's site?  Thanks.

Unfortunately i don't have a solution to your issue, but I thought I would mention the same issue with the new keyboard (MC184LL/B) and the iPad 2 running ios 4.3.5.  None of the function keys work as they should.
I recently received the older model (MC184LL/A) from FutureShop (Canada's sister to Best Buy) and everything works fine.  Perhaps you should seek out and buy the older model before they are phased out.
My only concern in saying this is I hope the update to ios 5 does not cause the older model keyboard to suddenly lose function key performance.  Similarly, I'm not sure the older model keyboard will work if you upgrade to Lion.
I called Apple support about this issue and they found some info on the same iPad forums I have read, but they had no inside scoop on whether the issue was going to be addressed in further ios (or Mac OS) updates.
If you want to keep your new keyboard, you might just have to wait and see if the issue is resolved.

  • Space/Delete/Caps keys only work with Fn pressed. Apple wireless keyboard.

A few weeks ago i noticed that certain keys weren't working on my keyboard.
A row of central keys, delete, function, caps, arrow keys and the space bar. De-coupling the keyboard to attach to my iPad rendered the same results. No use of keys. I gave it a clean but zilch. So I bought a replacement apple wireless keyboard from a friend, not new but un-used.
    It worked PERFECTLY.
BUT after the weekend, I sit at my desk to discover that while the central row of keys works fine, I have no delete key, no alt key, no down-arrow key, no spacebar, no caps...the capslock light doesn't even turn on.
I start going crazy. Since then i've:
    I've cleaned the keyboard,
    I've deleted relevant library files,
I've reset default keyboard function keys,
    I've performed SMC/PRAM resets.
    Nothing.
My keyboard - now two of my keyboards (and I only have two) are unusable.
But today I discover that in fact all the keys DO work. But ONLY if I press and hold the fn key in the bottom left hand corner. If I press the fn key the capslock button works, the light even turns on. if I press it down, I can delete things, use the alt key, I can make spaces between texts, I can use my down-arrow.
As you can imagine, this took a while to write.
I'm going out of my mind. PLEASE GOD SOMEONE HELP ME...

Did you ever solve this problem? I am having the same issue. No spacebar, delete, arrows, or tab.
Had to paste a space to write this email.

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard [pressed key]

    Hi,
I am having problems with my Apple Wireless Keyboard. It is acting like if there is a pressed key all the time.
It is difficult to explain it, so here is a video: http://screencast.com/t/jtQ7K92qAvk
Any tips on how to solve it?  I think this is a hardware issue but I am not sure.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Well, I'm having the same issue with my apple wireless keyboard (MC184BZ/B).
Here's a print of what I'm seeing with the Keyboard Viewer.
As I haven't accidentally dropped or spilled anything on the keyboard and there are more people with the same issue. It looks like a firmware problem.
My system is an MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013) with OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.

  • IPad 2 and Apple wireless keyboard (function keys not working)...

    Hello all,
I just purchased the Apple wireless keyboard to use with an iPad 2. It pairs fine and I can type away but none of the function keys work (brightness, volume etc). Anyone have any ideas? I think these worked fine on earlier keyboard models.
    All help gratefully accepted,
    Irlandés
    P.S. I'm running iOS 4.3.4 (8K2)

    Lrlandés-
I never tried my function keys before, but most are working under iOS 4.3.5.  I get no response for F3, F4, F5 or F6.  I suspect those may be App-specific.
What model keyboard is yours?  Mine is MC184LL/A, according to the box it came in.

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard - some keys not working with iPhone 5

I just bought an Apple Wireless Keyboard (2011) and paired it with my iphone 5 (iOS 7.0.3).
All keys work except the following:
    Space bar
    Delete
    Caps Lock
    Down Arrow
    Tab
I can understand if iOS has no concept of Tab, but Space and Delete are essential.
Did I get a bad keyboard?

    Hi Scoobydootoo,
I understand that you are experiencing an issue with your keyboard responsiveness. Here is an article that will help you troubleshoot this issue:
