Why are apps opening upon start up in Macbook Pro?

Whatever apps were open prior to shutting down continue to re open when I turn on my macbook pro.  None are listed in my startup programs, yet excel, iMessage, Safari and email open everytime I turn on my computer

Yes you need to uncheck "Reopen windows when logging back in" when you shut down and also if you don't want perticular application being opened in startup and you don't want to see it in dock, double click on the app on dock and goto options-> and uncheck it "open at login". Hope this helps..thanks.

  • Why are my fans so loud and my macbook pro so hot?

I have a 15" MacBook Pro.  I've had it since a little bit before Christmas and the fan has always been so loud and the laptop itself, as well as the charger, tend to get VERY hot VERY quickly.  I'm keeping it elevated so it's not being suffocated but it doesn't seem to help.  I've already checked Activity Monitor and nothing is running up my CPU very much and I'm out of options.  Any help is appreciated!! It's driving me crazy!!

Those are very, very high temperatures and very high fan speeds just trying to cool things down.
Now - which applications or processes are turning up the heat? Open Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities) and select "All Processes" and sort by CPU %:
Then post your screenshot (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4391) using the little camera icon in the composition bar at the top of your reply.

  • Why are my contacts doubling up on my macbook and my calender doubling up on my iphone?

Why are my contacts doubling up on my macbook pro and my calender doubling up on my iphone?

    Solarbiz,
I have the same issue.  No certain sense as to why it happened although it seemed to start after I was on the road and turned my iphone into airplane mode and went one step further and turned off a bunch of other services to ensure I was not hit with a big roaming bill.  I don't know but I suspect that turning those services back on may have been part of the reason.
I have found that in the case of my calendar,  going to icloud.com allowed me to delete the duplcated calendars rather than having to try and clean up specific enteries.
I am still looking for a solution for my contacts however.  On icloud.com I can delete duplicated groups, however the master list still shows duplicates for every entry.   When I am on my Mac I can filter "out" the icloud data and be left with a single set of my contacts.  It seems however that no matter what I do the syncing services thinks that I should have two of everything.
BTW - using the find duplicates does not work.
I hope someone else can chime in with a more complete solution.  It is very strange as all worked well for a few months.

  • How can I tell my computer what applications to open upon start up?

How can I tell my computer what applications to open upon start up?

If your Mac is running OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Select your user account, then click Login Items.
    Do one of the following:
Click Add below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
If you want to remove an automatic startup item,
Select the name of the item you want to  from opening automatically, then click Delete below the list on the right.

Do you have Flip4Mac installed?, this seems to be the cause, read all the posts here for complete removal.

There seems to be a few bugs with iCloud Mail at times, so send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Apple support article, but I don't think it really addresses your problem.

When I started up my macbook Pro after a boat trip (just lying in my bag the whole time) it started making weird sounds. Why does it do that and how do I stop it?

The 13" retina MBP has two fans, left and right near the hinge and about 2.5" each from the edges of the case.
My conjecture is that one of the fans may be failing.  An appointment at an Apple store genius bar is the best option.  The evaluation will be FREE and a fan replacement (if that is the problem) should not break the bank account.
You might run an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11342
This may confirm my suspicion or perhaps find a different problem. Note that an error free result should not be viewed as being definitive.
    Ciao.

  • Why are there 3 library folders on my MB Pro?

Why are there 3 library folders on my MB Pro? (1) in the HD folder; (2) in the system folder; (3) in the user folder?

Your home/Library folder contains support and preference files for you. It includes all your mail, if you use Apple Mail, as well as things like contacts, calendars, Safari bookmarks and caches, and so on. It also includes any fonts which you have installed for your user. 20GB seems a little high, but if you have a lot of mail/attachments, this could explain it.
The /Library folder contains support files (usually third-party) for all users. Adobe tends to put files in here, for example. It also includes iLife template/loop files, so you'll find GarageBand loops here, for example. Fonts which can be accessed by all users can be found here.
The /System/Library folder belongs to OS X, and contains support files for the system.
Don't delete any files from any of the folders unless you know what you're doing...

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. • Why would a picture of a globe pop up when I start up my macbook pro?

I started up my macbook pro, and instead of the Apple logo popping up while the computer loaded, a picture of a flashing globe had popped up. I ended up shutting the computer off and then turned it back on and it loaded up as normal. I was just curious if this was something i should be worried about..? i've only had my macbook for about 2 weeks, and it's my first time with a mac computer. Please help!

That is a sigfn that either the Online Apple hardware test is starting or that you are booting from the Online Recovery HD system. Both are from the Apple web servers.

  • How I can transfer some of my apps from I phone to my MacBook Pro?

How I can transfer some of my apps from I phone to my MacBook Pro?

Start iTunes 11.1 or later on your MacBook Pro and connect your iPhone. Select your iPhone in iTunes and under General select Transfer purchases.
That will create backups of your apps on your MacBook Pro. The apps will not run on your MacBook Pro though just in case you were wanting to do that. The Mac OS X on the MacBook Pro and the iOS on your iPhone are different operating systems.

  • How to get pics in the iphoto app for iphone back onto my macbook pro

I need to know how to get my pics that are stored on iphone in the "iphoto app for iPhone" back onto my macbook pro's iphoto. macbook was recently wiped out (i didn't back up) during Genius Bar repair

    See this support article  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
The safest way would be to share all photos that are in iPhoto albums to the Camera Roll. When you connect the iPhone to your Mac and open iPhoto you can download the contents of the Camera Roll just like from any camera.

  • HT204655 Why is Photos Causing an Unexpected Error on MacBook Pro?

I've tried to get Photos started on my MacBook Pro twice.  I uninstalled it and then found the 10.10.3 combination software and downloaded it again.
When I get to the "Get Started" screen, I get "An unexpected error has occurred."  Then Photos shuts down and won't go any further.
This is repeatable.  Happens every time I click on the photosicon.
    I need some help here!

Same thing has happened to me. I'm using a MacBook Aluminum (Late 2008) upgraded to 8GB of RAM and 1TB HDD running Yosemite 10.10.3. I successfully set up the photo app on an admin account that has no photos, but had the same error on my main user account.
    Troubleshooting attempted so far:
    1. Closed the app then tried again - did not correct the error
    2. Rebooted then tried opening Photo App - did not correct the error
    3. Rebooted in "Safe Mode" and repaired disk permissions - did not correct the error
I'm currently copying all my photo's to an external HDD with the intention of deleting my iPhoto library (once complete) then setting up the Photo App with no photos in my library. I'm hoping it will allow me to set it up at that point like it did with my admin account, then import all my old pics. I still have about 2 hours to go until my photos have copied over to my external HDD. I'm hoping someone will come along with a better solution. I really don't want to spend several hours/day re-organizing my photos.
