Why are downloads so slow

When I tried to download the new firefox the download speed never got above 50kper second

WELL WITH 15MPS I BET YOU ARE RUNNING SLOW!
I would restart the router * any networking gear you have* and maybe the ipad if it is still slow. then do the following..
"sometimes I like to throw my hands up and yell AAAA YOOO IM A LEGO!"

Why are attachments SO slow to open in Mail??? I have an iPad and iPhone 5S and I have no issues... this is a brand new MacBook Pro and it takes FOREVER to download an attachment in Mail....

I have the same issue, no way to find a solution, I am searching all the support pages...

  • Why are downloads taking so long?

I'm not exactly sure where to put this, as I am having two download problems.
One, I have a software update that is telling me it is going to take almost two days to complete and two, I am trying to download both an app and a TV show (ONE EPISODE) on the iTunes store. The app says it is going to take three hours and the episode says it is going to take 12. I do not have two days to sit around and wait for my software to update. I am a student and I have a lot of homework I need to do TODAY. Can anyone please help me/tell me why it's so slow or how to make it go faster?

Downloading through ethernet or wireless?  Have you tried both?  If slow on both, contact your ISP to determine if the problem is on their end.  School server could be very busy if a lot of students are downloading the same leturers cause heavy traffic/bottleneck.
Which browser & version are you using?  Have you tried others?
Have you read for possible solutions over in the "More Like This" thread over here?----------------------->

  • Why is download sooooooooo slow?  Checked internet speed - 6.5Mbs; seems OK and yet movie is going to take 2 hours to start. What sort of BS is that?

Why is download of movie so slow? Internet speed good - 6.5Mbs. Paid for movie. But told 2 hrs to start. Never have had this problem, why now?

        1.  6.5 Mb per sec. is slow for streaming video.
        2.  That speed only means that you COULD get that speed not that you WILL get that speed.
        3.  Have you done any tests to see what speeds you are actually getting, or what the quality of that connection is?  packet loss, slow DNS, etc. etc.
        4.  Even if you did have a "fast" connection that does not mean you get a great connection to every site.  So the if the connection between you and iCloud/iTunes is bottle necked you will not get much though put regardless of what connection speed you pay for.
       5.  Going to guess you are using WiFi which never gives reliable usable or performance for streaming video.
       6.  It is also possible that iCloud was just over whelmed at that instance and could not provide much bandwidth.
       7.  Your ISP may also be throttling your network traffic from sites like NetFlix and iCloud.

  • Why are downloads and all library unlistenable?

Why are all old downloads and new scramboed and unlistenable in library and itunes?

not sure about podcasts. but at least audiobooks have to be .m4b format to be recognized as such.
a very stupid solution would be... take the aac files (convert them, if they are not already), run the "make bookmarkable" script ( http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=makebookmarkable ), delete from the music list but keep files and drag them back in audioboos.
there HAS to be a better way. but at least it works.

  • Why are downloads on Apple TV so slow now?

I have never had slow downloads... and I like to think I know what I am doing since I have been using Apple TV since the old hard drive version. Recently I cant even watch a movie without extreme buffering and waiting for the movie to download.. it is crazy.. I have tried everything I know to try.. does anyone have the silver bullet? I am on a super fast Windows 8.1 PC with Cable at 20M..

I have changed settings on the apple tv to remove the option of icloud and tried exclisvely airplay from pc. I have tried conference room mode.. it only seems to happen with newly downloaded movies or rented movies- for example last night tried to watch superman- it buffered for 5 min to start the movie then after about 3min it stopped and had to buffer again- keep in mind I rented this move over a week ago so I was not trying to stream while it was downloading. Also just bought End of the World- I have not watched the  movie yet because of buffering. When I play an older movie in my collection there seems to be no issue.
I have reset the Apple TV, I have restarted the Apple TV, I have restarted the router, etc... all too no avail on the buffering issue/

  • Why is download so slow? on ITUNES 7?! I have Cable Modem!!

Had anyone noticed that the new ITUNES 7 is SOOO SLOW in downloading?? The videos used to download in less than a minute. NOW it is taking FOREVER for everything to download. And my computer is only 1 year old and I have Cable Modem - not slow dial up. Has anyone else had this problem? I usually LOVE software upgrades but I HATE the new ITUNES.
    HELP anyone?

It doubful thats its your PC per se, alot of people are reporting the store being alittle on the slow side.
It won't last long, its just apple make all these changes 3-4 days ago, a week or 2 they will have it all str8.
You can overlook your network setup tho, make sure the connection isn't looping around thru ports on the router and slowing you down. I doubt thats it tho, iTUnes increased the resolution of there video, so in turn the files are bigger. This is why iTUnes now has a download manager in it so you can pause things when needed

  • WHY are MACS  so slow on  internet vs PC's??

I have a fast connection and even those that really know MACS (hack n tosh groups - meaning they really know how to edit KEXT files) say the same thing.
If I launch Safari, Firefox, whatever, on a MAC wired, (ethernet) it is always slower to load the page whereas on the same connection with a PC, its about instant, what is THIS problem? Also, at the Apple store, I have a friend that says that this is always a complaint from recent switchers. Windows just works so much faster and when you are used to a page loading in 200 milliseconds, 1-2 seconds DOES SEEM like a long time. I see this all the time.
Any ideas and will they ever fix this issue? It will download fine but for everyday browsing, it is just so much slower.
Thanks. Doubt there is a fix but if there is, would like to try and hear it.

My Mac is much faster than my work machine, and the work machine is on a T-3 line.
Also note, the nomenclature of Macs:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=503342&tstart=10
The speed on the internet varies based not on operating system but based on browser rendering engine, website design, status of driver/firmware for routers, corrupt cache and cookies of specific web browsers, and hardware being used.
To improve the connection on web browsing, use a browser designed to understand the specific website being browsed. My FAQ* should help on that account:
    http://www.macmaps.com/browser.html
To improve the connection on WiFi access see this FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/WIFI1048.html
Also empty caches, and remove unnecessary cookies from your web browser.
And make sure your disk space isn't too full*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
If performance is lacking still, tell us the website and the browser used, and we can tell you if an alternative works better, or if we think it is the hardware or firmware of the hardware you are using which is slowing you down.

  • Why are my speeds slow?

Yes, another boring question about broadband speeds. Sorry!
I moved to BT Broadband from another ISP a couple of weeks ago in the hope of getting better speeds. A BT Speedtester test when I was with my previous ISP said that my download speed was 3218 Kbps and that the IP Profile for my line was 7150 Kbps. Since my move to BT the download speed is a little better than that, usually in the 3500 to 3700 range but with a low of 2340 Kbps.
When I placed my order with BT I was told, "We estimate your maximum download connection speed will be 8 Mbps. However, download speeds can vary and your actual download speed will fall within the range of 7.0 Mbps and 8.0 Mbps." Clearly I'm not achieving anything like that.
    Today's result:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 3662 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
    Additional Information:
    Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps
And details from my Home Hub Manager:

My Home Hub is connected to an extension phone socket, largely because the master socket is up in my loft and is now covered with about a foot and a half of insulation. However, in the past when I was trying to troubleshoot speed issues with my previous ISP I did cart my desktop computer up into the loft and connected my router to the test socket but speeds didn't improve at all. I therefore don't think the problem is with the phone wiring inside my house.
I know my speeds aren't disastrous but at the same time they're only about half of what I was promised by BT. As things stand, I would have been just as well to have stayed with my previous ISP and thus to have avoided the hassle of moving my account.
Can anyone suggest why my speeds are mediocre and what might be done to improve them? I'll be very grateful for any advice.

you have an 8mb connection with the correct profile of 7150 but your throughput/download is lower than I would expect at 3662.  would have expected 6500/7000.  check your exchange here for problems  http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/mso.php

  • Motion 5 - I have 12gb of ram so why are you so slow?

Been using motion 4 a ton at the office and it has been slowing down my computer to a crawl and I am not sure why:
    1. I have a pretty new mac with 12gb of RAM
    2.  Even though I constantly need to jump into Bridge and Photoshop, I bite the bullet and shut them down to appease the computer gods. Still no luck.
    Here are my other stats:
    OS X: Version 10.8.2
    Proc: 3.4 GHz i7
    Mem: 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Yeah, so should I be looking into nuclear power supply to get this program running correctly or ***?

It could be your second display.
I did a test and added 5 particles playing at the same time. With three displays on and with only the iMac display on. No slow down... I put another 5 particles.... Slow down but not much.
I distributed all 10 particles throughout the timeline, no slow down with one display or three displays.
You have to remember when you add more (for example particles). You will always have a slowdown. Motion is like Flash. Motion has to display objects on the screen at retime, on the fly. For a particles it has to compute the object on the fly. (Flash has to do this inside a browser.)
One last thing... make sure you have fixed resolution turn on for each layer group. This will make sure That each image... video... object and particle doesn't display beyond the bounding video box within Motion. If not set Motion still has to computer for these objects beyond the video bounding box.

  • Why are MacBooks so slow using Wifi?

The irony is I've had to jump on my Windows PC to troubleshoot.  Not a single issue with any device in the house connecting to the Wifi and using internet.  Just the MacBook Air.  Why hasn't Apple addressed this?  I can see by the numerous posts and questions this is a very common issue that has been going on for years and the concerning thing is how many similar posts to mine don't seem to get resolved.
Feel duped by Apple and all the hype about their PCs versus Windows based PCs.  Paid double for my laptop and yes it looks pretty and is nice and small, but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work.  Isn't the point you don't have to be a computer geek to make these things run.
Too bad the laptops aren't as handy as the phones and IPads.
    Dissapointed,

If MacBooks are inherently slow when using Wi-Fi then there is something wrong with all of mine, because they run like blazes.

Your Mac obviously performed well when you bought it, or you would have either immediately returned it for a 100% refund or called AppleCare, who would have fixed it. If AppleCare is no longer an option for you then you have to provide specific details, ask others to help you, and then patiently wait for competent assistance. The only questions that remain unresolved are the ones that lack those requirements. There is an abundance of useful information on this site that will help, if you want to fix your problem and not just rant about it.
Specific guidance requires specific details - until you can provide them read the following:
OS X Mountain Lion: If your Mac runs slowly The article is very cursory, but be sure to read through to the end. Unfortunately the "Repair a disk" link at the end points to nothing useful, so use this one: Disk Utility.
General purpose Mac troubleshooting guide: Isolating issues in Mac OS X
Creating a temporary account to isolate user-specific problems: Isolating an issue by using another user account
Memory limitations: Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used
Identifying resource hogs and other tips: Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity
To identify potential hardware problems: Apple Hardware Test
To resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance, use Disk Utility.
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
To repair a potentially corrupt hard disk, so that you may recover its data prior to replacing it, and subsequently reinstall Mac OS X: OS X Recovery (applies only to Lion and later versions of OS X)

  • Why are downloads freezing on iMac running 10.7.3?

I have a 2011 iMac running Lion OS X 10.7.3 and downloads are freezing part way through on both Safari and Firefox.

The iMac is ethernet hard wired to my router, which is connected to a cable modem from Time Warner.
Have you emptied your cache? (Under Safari in top Menu?) Are you running any third party addons especially things such as Little Snitch, Speed Download or anti-virus software? Have you repaired permissions using DiskUtility?

  • I updated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and dont like many of the changes. Why won't homepage open in full screen? and why are internet searches slower?

I updated from Snow Leopard to Mountain
Lion and homepage wont open in fullscreen.
web searches are slower to load too.
    what give?

What homepage are you referring to? The one in in safari? Elsewhere?

  • Why are first connections slow and subsequent ones very slow or won't connect?

Since upgrading initial connections are often slow and subsequent connections very slow or won't connect. I have had to revert to Internet explorer which works fine!

The default of the pref network.http.max-connections has been increased from 30 to 256 in Firefox 6+ versions.
You can try to decrease the value of the pref <b>network.http.max-connections</b> from 255 to a more modest setting like 30 as used in Firefox 3 versions.

  • Why are downloaded files being hidden?

    OS X 10.6.8
Some files that I download from the internet are being hidden by the os.  At first I thought that maybe the difference is that some .pdf files are protected but after review it is not just protected .pdf's being hidden from view it's non-protected .pdf's and some .jpg's too... I just noticed this happening over the past month or so.  I also considered that it happened after an acrobat update but that wouldn't explain the hidden .jpg's. All file type associations appear to be normal, I have tried reassociating .pdf file types, etc and back to no avail.  I dunnno', Any ideas?

    I tried:
    chflags nohidden -R ~/Downloads
it gave me an error message:
"-R no such file or directory"
    So I tried:
    chflags nohidden ~/Downloads
I got no error messages but it didn't help
It does seem random in the sense that some images and pdf's downloaded from the internet are not hidden (most of them aren't) but quite a few images and pd's are hidden on download.  So far it only seems to be pdf's and image files (of all types) that
    1. have been downloaded from the internet
    2. through the chrome browser
    3. within the past few months
The pdf's were all downloaded from various sites, some are protected content (printing and edit disabled) but free to download.  The images (memes, charts or infographics) were downloaded from various sites some downloaded off of facebook...
I'm not finding a rhyme or reason to it.
