Why are G5 replacement logic boards in such short supply?

It is now almost 1 week after the service tech I brought my G5 to informed me that my computer needed a new logic board and that Apple had backordered them. He can't tell me if I will be waiting a few weeks, a few months or more.
Is there such a flaw in these logic boards that Apple can't keep them in stock because they are constantly going bad? That G5 is our only computer at home and we use it for both prdfessional and personal purposes.
If anyone has any info, I would like to know how severe a backorder exists on G5 logic boards, just so I have some idea of how long I'll have to wait.

First let me say that you have every right to be upset with the facility that is doing service on your Mac. My experience with "Apple Certified Repair" facilities shows that mileage may vary. Your experience is not necessarily the same as others.
You are making quite the leap of faith about many facts based on this one perceived fact. I am not buying into the idea that you cannot be given an ETA or some other due date regarding your part.
As far as flaws in the boards themselves, I doubt it. There are a bunch out there that are not failing.
Call Apple Customer Relations-1-800-767-2775. Be firm yet polite and have them open up a case number to track your fiasco. Emphasis on the polite. My experience is that once ACR is on it communication improves tremendously.
If this is a machine that you need for business it would be wise to have a backup plan. Just as backup data must be stored off-site in order to ensure continuity should disaster strike, but you must also be prepared to either have a backup machine ready or at least rent one in the interim.

    You could ask the Apple store to let you have (or buy) one of the boxes they use to send the displays in for repair. They should have these on hand.

  • Do replacement logic boards have serial numbers?

    Hello everyone. My MacBook is in the shop for a logic board replacement. I've read elsewhere on this board that when you receive a replacement logic board that the serial number is no longer available from the System Profiler? Is this accurate?
    The reason I'm concerned is that my MacBook does not have that information available on the battery bay where it's supposed to be. According to Apple, there is supposed to be a gray sticker underneath the battery on the computer that shows the Ethernet ID and the serial number in addition to directions on how to change memory. My computer has never had this gray sticker.
    I'm concerned because, if the above is true, there will be no way to identify my computer or to associate my AppleCare agreement with this particular machine.

    The boards themselves might, but when they're installed into your system it shows up blank in the about my mac preference pane. They can't write your SN into the board of a replacement. Checking under the battery you should be able to locate the SN. However you stated that this is missing.
    I'd dig for your original receipt or box as the SN is one both of those items. Or you can try ringing apple or the store you bought it at and give your name, phone and email. They keep records of purchases at the stores on file, and also when registering. The mere fact that you've had it serviced means AppleCare should be able to provide that information to you by looking up your past case number. Make AppleCare add a note to your account that the sticker came up missing after the repair as to avoid issues with further service.

  • Why is my MBP serial number and model year no longer displayed in "about this mac" (have NOT replaced logic board)?

    I have not replaced or manipulated the logic board (or any other hardware) on my mid-2012 13 inch MBP. Under the "about this mac" tab, the serial number is no longer displayed (it now states "unavailable") and the model year is also no longer displayed. I understand that I can find the serial number and model year several other ways, I am seeking to determine why this happened and if it could indicate further problems.
    Has anyone else experienced this?

    Man oh man. What a day. New symptoms again!
    Lets start with the MBP dying in its sleep. I closed my MBP and left it for a few hours to come back to find it completely dead. Looked into this issue and with the help of the activity monitor cleaned up some things, turned off some sharing settings, got rid of some extensions, etc. Seems to have solved this issue.
    Later on, I picked up my MBP while it was on with my left hand and the same display (horizontal lines), freeze, auto shutdown happened. Out of curiosity I tried to recreate the symptom. Sure enough, pressing (with little force) on the left side of the bottom case caused it to happen again. I researched this a bit and found several possible culprits (bad logic board, metallic sticker may cause shorts, bad RAM bank, google drive). The google drive one really surprised me, I removed google drive (worked for many people) and it did not fix the issue. A buddy had some good RAM for me to use today so I swapped it out and had the same issue. Decided to test the individual RAM banks and it turns out that the deepest bank must be faulty. Running with only one 4 gig stick in the outermost bank and the freeze, shutdown, beep issue is gone!
    So, it seems I have fixed the dying in sleep problem and have a temporary work-around for the bad RAM bank. The SN issue remains.
    I am going to try to find out what could make a RAM bank be faulty and if there is a way to repair it.
    What are the chances that all this happens as soon as I try to find out why the SN is unavailable??

    I have another question similar to the one about whether or not different cases can be interchanged.
    My "new" question is this:
    Are the 3 "early 2005" Power Mac logic boards interchangeable? In other words, could one use a dual 2.0 or 2.3 or 2.7 ghz logic board in any of these models
    or is each logic board specific to the speed of the processor? Or can the quad 4 2.5 ghz logic board be substituted into a dual 2.7 ghz case?
    When you answer, could you please try to answer in simple terms.

    Hi, sorry for the bump. I am looking to get a new logic board for my G5. I've been looking around eBay and some info you said contradicts the descriptions of some items, namely:

    The 820-1760-A only has 4 ram slots, and by what Steve said, can only be compatible with the 2.0 ghz processors. The second listing has a model number of 820-1592-A, which the seller claims is compatible with 2.0+ ghz processors.
    So which one of you is right? I'm looking to replace my June 2004 board which has the same model number as the second listing, but am not sure if that listing is an Early 2005 model or not...

  • NVIDIA issue: Apple not agreeing to replace logic board

    Hi,
    I have a 15" MBP purchased in Oct 2007.
    This is what happened.
    Watching videos, screen starts flickering, Then hanged. So rebooted manually. Happened 3-4 times and after that system won't boot.
    Display comes, sound comes and then comes to gray screen of death.
    Took it to ASP, guy says software issue and asks me to repair. I go home run the diagnostic test and get the error:
    4VDC/1/40000003: VideoController.
    Googled and found out about the NVDIA 8600M graphics processor issue.
    Went back to ASP very happy that problem occurred with just 2 months remaining for the 4 yr warranty.
    Then begins my ordeal.
    ASP says because of the kernel panic, they cannot run any diagnostic test to confirm if its only GPP issue. They say some other component on logic board has failed so cannot give free replacement.
    Raise it with Customer care who puts me through Customer Relationship Manager, she says she'll have Apple engineers validate it.
    Comes back next day, says Apple engg ran test and found out its not GPP issue. I ask for results confirming it. She says I can get those from ASP.
    Next day go to ASP, ask for results, they say we could never run any test.
    I am a bit of technical guy myself. I understand that any malfunctioning hardware can cause kernel panic and graphics processor is pretty important one.
    So what I don't understand is, how can Apple say its not NVDIA issue, without even running any test.
    Called up customer care again, (this time was connected to different relationship manager) she kept saying the same thing, we did our test and find to connection to GPP issue. I asked her to put me through some technical person. She said she would do it and am waiting for the same.
    What I find very frustrating is that I have found many instances where people found the same issues as mine and they got a free replacement of the logic board. Then why in my case Apple is not willing to accept that this is the same problem.
    I need help from folks over here. What really are my options? What should I do?
    I am hoping the Apple technical person understands what I am saying. But what if he too refuses to accept?
    I cannot afford to spend this much on a logic board. Will have to buy a new one and that too non-MAC. (My wife would kill me if I buy another MAC and based on my own experience I would be very scared as well)
    I am based in India.
    Please help.

    my laptop from Apple Site and brought up the TS2377. Then he gave me some nonsense about how my model was 15"MBP 2.2/2.4 GHz (Late
    2007) whereas in TS2377, it just says 15"MBP 2.2/2.4 GHz, no mention of Late 2007, therefore my laptop is not part of affected batch. I was like, dude, what
    are you talking about, its clearly mentioned manufactured between May 2007 to September 2008. Then he said, this model doesn't have "something" because of
    which the NVIDIA test cannot be run. When I asked what that something is, then he just said nothing and cut short that thread of conversation. Then he tried to run
    the test on his own laptop and to my good fortune even that laptop didn't recognize the USB at bootup time. It would detect when system was running. At
    that point he pretty much ran out of all excuses and told me he would take the laptop inside and work on it. He told me he'll give me a call once he has an
    update which he did a while back and gave me the fantastic news.
    Although I am thankful to this AASP person for looking into it seriously, this whole episode has left a bitter taste about Apple's service in general.
    First I never expected Apple product to go bust in less than 4 years. And if there is a known manufacturing fault then Apple should make sure that the
    customer doesnt have to do running around to prove the issue.
    The NVIDIA test requires the system to boot up. But ideally the test should be such that they should just be able to take the logic board and verify it somehow.
    Its like, if the part has gone little bad then we can replace, but if its gone completely bad then we can't.
    Also, Apple should look to fix issues in logic board rather than asking users to replace it completely (in the event they are not providing replacement). For all
    we know the problem could be in $10 component that requires a $1000 to replace.
    Anyways, enough of my rant. I'm just relieved that matter is resolved. I am thankful to all who replied esp tjk.

    As you and I already know, that machine is indeed one of the models that may be affected by the NVIDIA issue. It's difficult to believe someone would deny that. Anyway, your persistence paid off, and you should be on the way to a normally functioning MBP. Finally. It's too bad you had to go through all that, but I'm glad that worked out for you. Hope you'll post back with the results after the MBP is repaired.

    The 2011 MBPs do not have USB 3 Ports.
    Check with iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com for logic boards for your MBP.  They will have prices and installation instructions.

  • Apple store replaced logic board backlit keys no longer work

    So about a week ago I had to have the logic board replaced because airport would connect only half the time. The apple store did fix the problem, but only one more thing, the backlit keyboard no longer is recongnized, its like the employees didnt plug it back up, my main question is is that I have to have the laptop for school, how long would it take the apple store to fix or if its simple could I fix myself.

    I would make another genius bar appointment, they could do it while you wait in the store. I understand this is the preferred policy now at the genius bar to prevent them from taking in all sorts of machines. If they are busy they will have to make the repair after hours when the store closes. They will usually quote something like 1-3 business days but in my experience it has usually been 1-2 days.

  • Replacing Logic Board

    I have an Indigo 350 mHz from Summer 2000 in which the screen will no longer come on. I get a green power button but no chimes. I have looked through the other discussions and have replaced the battery and reset the PMU, all to no avail. I am now under the assumption that I must replace the logic board. My question (at last) is how critical is it that I replace it the exact same logic board (part # and all). I see many varieties available on ebay, including some with the same part number. Is there any reason I couldn't do a slight upgrade, or am I asking for trouble. Thanks.

    I concour with Henry too many things can generate your problem MotherBoard, Down Converter, or even a fuse.
    If you would like to troubleshoot your problem is better that you download Apple service Manual or check this other web site.
    Regarding replacing Motherboard, is some how critical. A research in this discussion may help you.
    You may find that motherboard and Slot-loading iMac are some how interchangable (I HAVE NOT TRIED YET). Post #1 but, I also remember that there are something about incompatibility between Down converter and mother boards.
    I you have not time to experiment a replacement part# for Part # is the easy way to go..

  • MacBook Pro 17" replace Logic Board (newer board?)

    last weekend my early 2011 MacBook pro 17" logic board got toasted. I went to the apple store today and they said they can replace it for almost 500 bucks with an identical board, this got me thinking. since they discontinued the 17" units I guess there shouldn't be that much newer MacBook Pro logic boards, but I think the last 17" was released in 2012. which I would assume used a newer logic board than my original early 2011 piece. so I was wondering if it was possible to put/fit the 2012 or well basically a newer version of the 17" logic board into my MacBook Pro. Since I already left the store I figured I'd ask here. They won't get started on my MacBook Pro anyways.
    ddid they release a newer logic board in the 2012 release and if so would it even fit?

    So exactly a month later, as you might recall I got a new logic board into my old MacBook Pro... all was good until today... 8 hours ago, I started getting the same error as before, my screen started flickering, even though I hadn't been working on the macbook for more than 2 hours. Then my screen split somewhat around the middle and everything that was supposed to be left was right, everything that was right was left, I could literally move my mouse to the edge of the right side of my screen and it would continue on the left side. Only 3 applications running were: Finder, little snitch, photoshop cs6... and I was actually working on a fairly big photoshop file, but still my macbook wasn't even hot on the outside yet, and it actually heats up fast.
    so what am I looking at here? Is this apple's way of telling me, I can not own a MacBook Pro for more than 3 years... and that no repair in the world will work for me, but that I actually have to trash my beloved 17" MacBook Pro and get a new smaller MacBook Pro which I can not possibly afford right now, especially after spending 500€ to replace the logic board just a month ago?
    when I restart the MacBook Pro it seems even worse than before, I don't just get the white screen with the apple logo that I can not get past, I actually get the white screen apple logo with error stripes running through from top to bottom throughout the entire screen.
    which is insane, I am a huge apple fan, I've owned every iPhone that ever came out, but this is such a huge disappointment. I mean a logic board lasting 1 month, just sounds insane.

  • Macbook Pro not working with replacement logic board

    Hello everyone! About two months ago, someone spilled tea over my macbook pro. Upon taking it to the Apple store the representative told me that it would cost me over $1,000 to repair it and that I would be better off getting a new one (I know most of you have heard that many times). I inspected the Macbook and I realized that when I tried turning it on the keyboard would not light up and, but the sleep light was on. Furthermore, I heard the hard drive and the fans spinning. The tea only spilled on the right side of the Macbook so I figured that would help me narrow down the issue. The apple representative told me that I needed to replace the logic board so I went and bought a replacement one that was the same model. Before I screwed all the pieces back in, I wanted to try it out and see if it would turn on. Unfortunately I still have the same problem. It seems that the logic board is not the problem, but I am not sure what it might be. I'm pretty sure the CD/DVD drive is damaged, but I don't see why that would prevent the Macbook from turning on. I did a little research and I notice that most people test the graphics card to see if it is working, but I don't know how to do that. I have an older Macbook Pro, the motherboard is model 820-1993-A and I believe the model of the Macbook is A1150. Please help, this macbook was a gift and I don't want to throw it out!

    Well I would like to find out what the piece is that is causing me the problem so that I could replace it! I already replaced the most expensive piece and the hard drive seems to be working fine so it doesn't leave many things. I just would like to know how I would be able to check to see if the video card is damaged.

  • Macbook won't wake from sleep - replaced logic board and batteries already

    I have a 13" White Macbook on 10.5.5 that occasionally won't wake from sleep. This will happen with nothing plugged into the Macbook except for the AC adapter. I have done the firmware upgrade, reset the SMC, reinstalled Leopard from the DVDs twice, brought it into Genius and had the ram, sleep switch, and the logic board replaced. There are no bluetooth devices attached to the computer.
    I've searched the forums but haven't found a definitive answer yet.

    I've experienced the problem as well. I have the new aluminum macbook with all factory specs and no mods, except that I changed it from smart sleep to the original old mac behavior of instant sleep. It is intermittant and with mine, I've noticed that when the screen is open, the computer appears to be completely off, but when I close the computer the light on the front of the computer comes on. The only resolution I've found so far is to hold the power button for 5 seconds for a hard power down and then push it again--everything works fine.
    There is indeed a sudden drop sensor, and in fact, it did happen after I accidentally hit the corner of my mac once on a tv while trying to set it down. That could be the answer...we might have to try disabling that because quite honestly, if I drop my mac while its on, I'm going to be more worried about the screen, the case, even the cute little plastic apple than the hard drive (I have backups galore).

    sorry you had to wait so long for a reply, but here goes:
    unless you have an extensive knowledge of MacBooks and MacBook repair (and access to the Global Service Exchange, which i doubt you do), i wouldn't even try to replace a logic board. the IT person at my school won't even let me touch a logic board in a functioning computer (i'm 15) even though i've done lots of repairs on computers (including my own).
    the logic board has a lot of components that are model specific and your computer could be damaged and put out of warranty if you try to do it yourself.
    sorry about that, but it's the truth.

  • Replaced logic board on MacBook Pro; now I must reauthorize!

    I've just synched my iPhone with my MacBook Pro which came back today after having its logic board replaced under the nVidia issue recall program. But I am not that comfortable with the idea that I've now used up 2 of my 5 computers for apps/songs etc.
    What can I do? I imagine that I need to inform Apple to de-authorize my previous logic board. But how?

    If you weren't able to de-authorize your MBP before sending it in for the logic board to be replaced, I don't believe you can reset or de authorize all currently authorized computers until you reach or authorize 5 computers. You can then do a complete reset or de-authorize all authorized computers followed by re-authorizing the computer you are currently using.
