Why are Garageband 10 audio files larger than the previous version?

I was working with Garageband 10 creating note files for my iPad app.  When I exported them as aif format, the file size was 2.1 mb.  When working with Garageband 6, the aif file sizes were 1.1mb.  Since Apple limits the file sizes of apps that are submitted to the App store, I can't use Garageband 10 with its new instruments.  Is there any way to decrease the aif file size and still keep the same format?  Thanks for any help!

Since QuickTime X doesn't have any export "options" (other than dimensions) a "raw" DV Stream format should always be smaller in file size.
DV Stream is about 13 GB's per hour of recording. A QuickTime X "conversion" would use H.264 video and AAC audio codecs and should be about ten times smaller in file size.
Are you sure your files are DV Stream?
In any event, QuickTime X may not be the best tool for the job.
QuickTime Player Pro doesn't re-compress the source codec if you use a simple "save" or "save as".
A regular "save" after doing any edits will replace your source file with the newer version. No way to restore any of the edited information so you should use save as (keeping the original).

  • PE 9 - Why is my exported file larger than the source?

    Hello
I am new to Adobe Premier Elements 9. I have a Digital Video Recorder connected to my television. It produces MPEG-2 TS VIDEO FILEs. I want to import these into PE9 and just cut out the ads.
I tried with a source file that is 1GB in size. I imported it and removed the ads but when I export it using Share > Computer and select settings that mimic the source I stll end up with a 3.7GB file. I thought it should be smaller that 1GB because the video is now about 5 minutes shorter.
In my Export settings I chose:
    Multiplexer: TS
    Audio: Left it untouched
    Video:
    Basic Video Settings:
    Quality = 4
Everything else set to Automatic (based on source)
Render at Maximum Depth left unchecked
    Bitrate Settings:
    Encoding: VBR, 1 Pass
    Bitrate Level - Custom
Min, Target and Max all set to 15
    GOP Settings:
    M Frames: 3
    N Frames: 12
Is my DVR better at encoding/compressing video that PE9 or are my export setting wrong? Shouldn't the exported file be less that 1GB?

As Steve points out, there are two parameters, that affect File Size:
    Duration
    Bit-Rate
With a fixed Duration, the only way to adjust File Size is lower the Bit-Rate (lower Bit-Rate = smaller File Size, but at the expense of quality.
Now, some CODEC's will allow one to use a lower Bit-Rate, but still retain perceived quality, better than some others, but it is still the Bit-Rate, that affects the File Size.
Some Export/CODEC options will list the Bit-Rate directly, and MB/sec., where others will instead have a "quality" setting, and the Bit-Rate's MB/sec. will not be directly shown, but will relate to some quality setting.
One major consideration is what is to be done with the resulting output file. If it is to be used for additional editing, then I feel that File Size is not a big issue, as I want the ultimate quality. If one is delivering the output file, then there are many considerations, from the platform of the recipient's computer, to the player being used, to the necessary quality of the file.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Imported video files are 7-8 times larger than the original!!!

I really like iMovie but the thing is iMovie imports my video files (taken in my AVCHD Sony Handycam HDR-CX11E) with an approximatly 7 times larger file size than the original file size of the movie. And still I have chosen the option "Large - 960 x 540". I really don't know if there is any solution to this "problem". I would be thankful for anyone who could give me a solution.
    Regards

The best way to find out is to try it. Take a small but representative sample, do some edits, export as H264, then reimport, do some edits, export again.
I expect some degradation, but here mostly the problem may be the quality (or lack thereof) of the analog originals.
Also, let me clarify: QT movie per se means nothing in terms of quality or compression. The QT is a container format. Inside it can be a high quality, high bitrate ProRes 4444 or a highly compressed H264, or a number of other things.
In FCP X, when you export a Master File, you get to decide in the settings which codec to use (e.g. Prores vs H264), but the output file will still be a QT file.

    1. Open application Office error reporting, the application is located in this folder
          /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MERP2.0
    2. Go in preferences
    3. Uncheck enable office error reporting
    That did it... Thank you!

  • I updated to 5.0 beta and the page on the screed is smaller than the previous version and I cant get the zoom to work to increase the text and pictures.

the text and pictures is very small or at leat much smaller than in the prior version and the zoom will not make it bigger.

    Hi Idreier,
I'd try starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Why are still images importing larger than their size?

Per instructions in a thread I had here last week, I created all of my DVD still images at 720 x 534 pixels for Premiere Pro CS5.5. But when they are brought into a DVCPRO50 NTSC Standard sequence, they are being heavily clipped. The original in one example is this:
But when that same images is brought into PP, it is sized up like this:
It's still proportionally correct, but a lot of the top and bottom of the image are gone. The encoded MPEG-2 sequence and disk I've done as a test display just like that.
Why is PP doing this, and how can I get it to use images built to the correct size to be used 1:1 in a sequence instead of being scaled to about 115% of size? Hate to compare this way, but this was never an issue with Final Cut Pro, which I'm switching from. Stills created to the size FCP needed of 720 x 540 displayed and finished exactly as they were made in Photoshop. The only image area lost was the normal bit of overscanning DVDs display at on your TV.

I guess I don't understand.  This is an excerpt from the CS help.  This seems to be inconsistent with what the last two posts said.

  • Why are my audio files separate?

Working in FCP 7.  My clips are linked but when I make any audio adjustments they only happen on one channel.  Up until this current project if I changed any levels or added and audio keyframes I would see the adjustment on both channels.  I haven't changed any settings so I'm guessing I hit something somewhere.  Any help in getting it back to the way it was?  Again everything is linked together.
    Thanks!!

Your clips were likely ingested with Dual Mono tracks.
Select the linked clips in the timeline and go to the menu Modify > Stereo Pair, which will toggle On the Stereo Pair settings, turning the linked audio into a Stereo Pair.

  • Why are my browser windows larger than my screen?

When I put Lion on my iMac, browser windows for Safari become very large and Google Chrome windows are immense.
This didn't happen on my MacBook Pro. I've looked in all kinds of preferences and I can't seem to find a way to trim down browser window size.

Hi, thank you so much for responding!
The problem isn't related to type size or resolution. It's the actual window size. It's for all windows, not just browsers. The menu bar doesn't appear--the only way to get to it is to push the cursor to the top of the screen and then I lose my place. Same for the right-hand scroll and any window-controls on the bottom--I have to go way outside the part of the screen that's displayed.
I tried both your suggestions, command-shift - just made the typeface smaller--the window navigation is still outside of the screen. And then I changed the Sys Preferences/Display as you suggest, that just made the typeface bigger and blurrier.
    Any other ideas?
It's really "window size" -- but I can't find any setting that reduces the size of windows.

  • All files larger than the screen aligns to the right by default

    Hello,
    I looked around from the existing solution pool but could not find one so here I go;
PROBLEM; All files or programs(Numbers, Pages, Finder, Web brousers, Itunes etc)that do not horizontally fit the sceen(ie requires horizontal scroll bar) in my macbook pro moves to the far right by default.   Hense I cannot view the program on the left side unless make it all small enough to fit the screen.  Is there a solution to this?
I am fully updated on the platform 10.6.8.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the tips Captfred.
As you mention it works while I hold Control button and this is helpful.   Now is there also a permanent way to keep the screen aligned to the left(or the alignment of files on the screen stays as positioned by the user) without holding the button?
    Thanks.

  • With the newest update; when cliking on a picture to view in a larger size, the back ground of the pictures are in black; not white like the previous version

how can I get the back ground to be white again; with out "downgrading"

It is a new feature in Firefox 11+ versions to display a single image centered with an almost black background.
It is added by this stylesheet:
    * resource://gre/res/TopLevelImageDocument.css
You can look at this extension to set your preferred background color and remove the centering.
    * Old Default Image Style: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/old-default-image-style/

  • PS Touch needs a warning message when importing files larger than 2048x2048 max resolution

I opened 6500x5000 px files into PS Touch in iPad for some minor retouching. PS Touch - without notification - reduced the images to fit within 2048 x 2048 px. It happily let me open these files, work on them and save and never let me know it was reducing the file size, rendering all the work I did utterly useless since 2048x2048 is far too small for print res for these files.
PS Touch needs a notification or warning when importing files larger than the app's max resolution. Resizing files without notification is just asinine.

  • 2014 update did not uninstall the previous versions

When I got the 2014 updates, none of the installs deleted the previous version.   In addition people are complaining that if you uninstall the previous version by hand, then the new version fails to work correctly.  What Adobe has done here is very confusing, and I would like a better explanation than I'm seeing.

  • Why are ACR PSD files 10-20 percent larger than the same file resaved in PSD?

Why are ACR > PSD files 10-20 percent larger than the same file resaved in PSD? I posted this many years ago and never found an answer. Now that my drives fill up quicker, I thought I might chase this question a little bit further.
Same .CR2 saved within ACR either with cmd-R or open ACR within PSD, the saved file is 34.5mb. Resave that same file (no edits) within PSD either with or without Max-compatible and the file is now 30.7mb. Another file that is 24.5 becomes 19.5MB.
Why the difference? Is ACR and PSD actually using different compression strategies?
    thanks.
Mac 10.8.5 / CC / ACR 8.4.1 - but this has been a consistent behavior over many years and versions, CS6 / CC.

    Hi Jeff
If it is RLE it's not as efficient as LZW:
Saved ACR>PSD = 40.1MB  (sample image this AM)
opened in PS and resaved as PSD = 30.8MB
resaved as TIF without LZW = 40.1MB    (this adds to your thought that the ACR>PSD doesn't us any compression)
    resaved as TIF/LZW = 9.6MB
    Jeff Schewe wrote:
I really think your priorities are a bit off. 10-20% is meaningless...you just need to get bigger....  and quit fussing over a few GB's here or there...
???   I hope that the Adobe engineers are fussing over 10-20% efficiencies.
I'm within arms reach to a rack of 40TB of drives (doesn't include off-site drives), and all 2TB drives are being recycled to 4TB drives, as a result the rack is always growing. Actually the ACR>PSD files don't really make a difference in our long term storage, only for the nightly backups. But anyway, how you save, what you save etc. should all be part of the discussion.
.... so in my case, throw in an excess MB here and there and all of a sudden you are talking TB's. Plus advantages in backup times, drive life, and energy use.
Somebody added compression into the PS>PSD format, but it wasn't included in the ACR>PSD format, was it a decision or an oversight? If it's just a matter of making ACR compatible with PS when saving the same PSD format..... then why not?

  • Why is menu size so much larger than the files?

I am somewhat perplexed - I'm making a single-layer dvd and have a simple single screen theme (no animation) - it has one drop zone. The movie has 28 chapters so there are five of them, but so far I've added only one montage of photos to each menu page - it's a "mobile" quality in media browser and ave only 10 - 20 MB, then one song. On average these movie clips are 1:00 to 2:00 min long and the music is cut to that length. So, all told, it's probably less than 110 MB in files - but when I look at the project properties, the menus are 3301 MB!!!
The movie itself is only 1.1 GB so what is going on?
It's preventing me from doing the project and I've got no idea why it's making the menu size so much larger than the file sizes?
Can you please help me figure out what to do?
    Alexa

The 2 min clips were natively 2 min - I had each one separate and actually converted to media browser in "mobile" size (b/c the drop zone was 4 x 6 in size in the theme). They were tiny - in most cases I was shortening the audio (e.g. the song was 4 minutes and I was setting the loop to only 1:30 b/c that's how long the video clip was on the menu).
BUT, to resolve the question (I always like to post the answer) - I ended up duplicating the project to try to reimport the video. It was a fresh iDVD project and I happened to click on the project tree of screens - and, lo and behold, the ENTIRE menu was duplicated for some reason (and the movie, actually). I went back to the original and it was the same! I have no idea how that would happen do you? It only had one main menu screen - and then an entire duplicate menu - which I wouldn't even know how to access if I didn't see it in the project menu tree?
The only think of is that at one point I added a title menu link to the scene selection - it gave me a warning that my menu was more than 12 minutes, did I want to fix or ignore and fix later - which confused me b/c it was under 12 min, then but I clicked ignore. Does that create an alternate title menu and send people back to something else?
Anyway, I deleted the entire extra scene selection menus (5 of them) and it was back to under 4 GB.
So, I was able to burn, but still wondering about creating the "title menu" link on scene selections? It drives me crazy that it doesn't automatically do that so I like to add "main menu" links.
    Thanks for your help!
