Why are jpegs printing dark from InDesign?

When I create documents with jpegs, they print very dark from InDesign CS5.5. When I print the jpeg from my desktop, it comes out exactly as it appears on my monitor.
I'm sure there is a setting that I need to change, but I'm not sure what it could be.

OK. That's a start.
If you go to Edit > Color Settings... Does the dialog say they are sychronized? If not, you should do the same in Photoshop and make note of what the settings are, then in Bridge go to Edit > Creative Suite Color Settings and reset them there to the ones from Photoshop, then go back to your InDesign File and go to Edit > Assign Profiles... and assign the smae RGB and CMYK profiles listed for the color settings in Photoshop.
That should give you the same output, but there's still one more place to check. In the Print dialog, under Output, reset the Send Data field to All.

  • Is there any way to print directly from InDesign CS3 to Mavericks 10.9.4?

Are there any fixes or workarounds that allow me to print directly from InDesign CS3 to Mavericks 10.9.4. Everything I try now causes InDesign to freeze if I attempt to print. The only way is to export the file as a PDF. Thank you.

You shouldn’t be having a problem like that. I’m going to move this to the InDesign forum but it would help if you posted more details on the issues you’re having.
Another thing to try is exporting to INX from CS3 and opening the INX in CS5.5

  • Why are HP printer cartridges country specific? Is there any way around this?

I have just moved from the UK to Newfoundland, Canada and I have brought my HP PSC 1610 printer with me.  I was advised not to bring any cartridges with me because they would explode during the flight so I had to buy new cartridges upon arrival.
I noticed that the cartridge numbers recommended for my printer were similar but not exactly the same but the (HP, etc.) websites I looked at did not mention that HP printer cartridges country specific.
In the UK black cartridge is an HP338 (C8765EE).
In Canada the websites told me that the black cartridge is a 94 (C8765WC).
I ordered a 94 cartridge (which took an indordinate amount of time to be delivered) and when I installed it my printer would not accept it ("not intended for use in this printer" error message) even though it fit perfectly.  I looked at the packaging in greater detail and noticed that I had been sent a 94 (C8765WL) and I also noticed (in a very small font size) "for sale only in Latin America".
    My questions are therefore:
    1) Why are HP printer cartridges country specific?
    2) Is there any way around this?  Eg is there anything I can do to my printer/ laptop to tell it to accept this cartridge?
    3) Are 94/ C8765WL cartidges compatible with 94/ C8765WC cartirdges?  Ie did the supplier sell me something that couldn't be used even if I had a Canadian HP PSC 1610 printer?
    4) Can I return the cartridges to the supplier given that it is based in Canada, they delivered it to me in Canada and yet they sold me a product that says "for sale only in Latin America"?
    Thanks

You will need to Contact HP to request a "Regionalization Reset". There should not be any charge for this, it is covered as part of the cartridge warranty. You will need to have access to your computer and printer while on the line with HP. You will also need to have a set of cartridges for the new region, once the reset is complete cartridges from the original region will no longer work.  HP's web page on the subject is here.

  • Print booklets from InDesign.

I used to create print booklets from InDesign but this option disappeared with version CS5. Is Adobe doing anything about restoring this feature? What are my options in the meantime?

    Are you patched to 5.0.4?
I run XP SP2, rather than 3, and Acrobat 9 pro (now at version 9.3.2) and I haven't had a problem using Print Booklet to make a PDF, so I suspect either it's something in SP3, or more likely a problem on the system.
First thing might be to try replacing your preferences. See Replace Your Preferences
Next might be to unistall the PDF printer and reinstall it (does it work outside of Print Booklet?). Make sure you update Acrobat first, if you haven't already done so.
If neither of those works, see if there's anything else running in the background that could be causing a problem.
Finally, if nothing is working, it's time to look at a scripted solution. I know two scripts, both by Dave Saunders, that can handle simple two-up saddle stitch impositions without creep. One is better than the other if you have objects crossing the spine, but neither is as sophiticated in what it can do as Print Booklet, which can handle perfect binding with various signature sizes.

  • Cannot print A3 from InDesign to Canon clc 4040 printer

Hi I have a problem that may or may not have anything to do with InDesign...
Office with 5 Mac Pros, PowerPC models, all running identical OSX 10.5.latest, Adobe CS4 everything.
All software up to date. Basically all machines identical.
All users are storing their files on the same network volume.
3 Macs can print A3 to the Canon clc 4040 but 2 cannot. This is Mac20 used by Kirsti and Mac07 used by Kevin.
If Kirsti sits at Mac20 she cannot print A3 from InDesign. It prints an A4 page, being part of the whole A3 document (its not the A3 doc shrunk to fit A4) The same goes for all other apps including MS Word. Page setup =A3, printer setup = A3, result... printer prints A4. BUT she can print A3 from Quark XPress 8.0.
If Kirsti logs in to another Mac she still cannot print A3 BUT the usual user of that Mac CAN print A3. But if they try to print Kirsti's files A3 they cannot.
All Macs have exactly the same driver from Canon. Latest version 2.0 from their website.
Deleting the InDesign preferences from the Mac makes no difference.
    All Macs on same network.
All connecting to Canon clc 4040 via network using IP or using Bonjour. Same result with either protocol.
I have deleted and re-installed the printer countless times.
The only "work around" is to remove the A4 tray and "force" the printer to use A3.
The above scenario is the same for Kevin on Mac07
The Canon CLC 4040 has a "Fiery RIP" whatever that is...
Can anyone point me at where the problem lies? I have had a Canon tech on site but he could do nothing.

My experience is with CS2 on OS 10.3.9 and 10.4.11, so this may have changed in CS3, or 10.5....
Setup a custom paper size for your printer.
This can be accessed from within the InDesign Print window.
    File > Print
    Select your printer from the
Printer: pulldown menu (if not already selected)
    Click
Page Setup... at the bottom left
    Click
    Settings and then select
Custom Paper Size from the list of options
    Click
New, name the style, define the paper size and printable margins, and save it.
Click OK to exit the page setup.
In the InDesign Print Window, Click on
    Page Setup... again
    Select
Your New Paper Size in the Page Setup
Paper Size: pulldown, then click OK.
    InDesign Print window
Setup should reflect the new page size and list the paper size as "Defined by Driver"
If your document page size is the same as your paper size, then the preview in the lower left should reflect that.

  • Why are my images scrolling from outside the Page width?

Why are my images scrolling from outside the Page width? I am positive i has all the settings correct, to have an image parallax scroll from the edge of the page into the page and out again. But the images are flying in from the browser width - not the page width. This is not the effect I am after.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Given the key position is only linked to the height, I can't for the life of me work out how to ensure the images start moving from a certain position onthe left and right of the page.
    Thanks

I think the effect you are seeing is a result of how the lineHeight is set up. By default, the lineHeight will be calculated as 120% of the size of the largest thing on the line -- in your case, this is the inline graphic. This is designed to leave space between the line before and the line with the graphic. So it is taking the height of the graphic, multiplying by 120%, and making this the distance between the previous line and the line with the graphic. So the bigger the graphic, the bigger the space above the graphic. Normally this works well with text, but in this case you may want to get closer to "set solid". You can do this by setting the lineHeight to 100%. Or you may wish to leave a couple of percent for the descenders of the previous line. Or, another alternative that may work well for you if you really know exactly where you want the line set, you could measure the graphic, add on the number of extra pixels to leave for the descenders, and make the lineHeight a constant. So you could do something like this:
    <img lineHeight="104%" height="411"/>
    or this:
    <img lineHeight="423" height="411"/>
Obviously you would still need to specify the source and any other parameters you want on the image.
Note that if you are trying to fit a 200 pixel high graphic into a 200 pixel high container, you will hit the same problem -- in order to fit the graphic, the container will have to be slightly bigger than the graphic in order to fit the descenders on the last line. This is true even if the last line contains only the graphic, and no descenders (or text) at all.
    Hope this helps,

  • Why does "Print Booklet" from Indesign CS5.5 only create low res pdf? How do I get High Res for Offs

Long time ID user in Agency. Created a simple 4 page brochure in CS5.5 ID. Facing pages for cust size 11x17 half fold document.
Generating the pdf for Press and HQ Print renders a nice high res document, but the print booklet feature only produces a skinny low res version. Tried to mess with the printer settings, but the result is the same with a skinny low res document.
I didn't want to recreate the brochure as a two page manually imposed as I like the option of being able to add more pages in increments of four of course. Plus it's just silly to do that when ID is supposed to handle it for me.
I worked around it this time by printing to .ps output then distilling, and then splitting the document so printer could have a "front" and "back" 11x17. But this seems kludged big time. This has to be a bug unless I am missing something.

You probably never changed the default settings in the PDF printer properties. In the print booklet dialog, click the Print Settings button, then the Setup button at the bottom of the Print Dialog that pops up, choose the PDF printer and click on Preferences. Reset the default reset the default settings to the ones you really want to use, or reset them in Windows... Control Panel > Devices and Printers... Double-click the PDF printer, then from the print queue dialog, Printer > Properties... General tab and clcik the Preferences button.

  • Why both jpeg and dng from my D90?

OK ....bear with me - I'm a beginner ... but why do I get photos from my Nikon D90 in both jpeg and dng formats? Is this desirable? Can I just select the dng format? If so, how?
And really confusing to me is the fact that often the jpeg copies seem to be more vibrant than its dng brother.
    Thanks, Burt

    Burtman,
First, your user manual will tell you how, in the camera's menu, to choose whether you want RAW, small RAW, JPEGs in Large, Medium, or Small, and a combination of RAW and JPEG.
Now, the why:  RAW files are specifically intended for those who plan on doing image processing after taking the picture...it is what you camera's sensor actually "sees" and when comparedto the JPEG will almost always look washed out as you are seeing.  If you are not planning on doing intensive post-processing such as white balance corrections, or using these as the kick-off point for creating large image files (such as TIFs coming out of Photoshop) that are not destined for large format printing, you may well find that (at least for now) you are fine just changing the file capture setting just to Large JPEGs.
Here is a link to the manual (you want the section starting on page 62), but the short version is:  use the "quality" button on the bottom left of the back of the camera, and then use the main command dial to change selections.
    Link to user manual.
    Hope that helps.

  • Cannot print directly from InDesign CS5, must export to PDF

My co-worker and I have not been able to print to our Ricoh Aficion SP C811DN from InDesign since upgraded to CS5. We both experience similar errors (ERROR: undefined, OFFENDING COMMAND: o [or C, or some other letter] and then STACK: XXX). We are both running Windows XP, I am 64-bit, she is not. The only workaround thus far is exporting to PDF and printing from there.
I have tried printing single random pages and omitting graphics but neither of these seems to work. I did create a new document and inserted a single black box with white text and that printed just fine, but anything more complicated won't print.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Honestly, that’s the general advice anyway.
I never print from InDesign. It’s just not that efficient.
BTW, Windows XP64 is completely unsupported. Time to move to Windows 7.

  • Printing issues from InDesign CS4 pdf file

    Good morning,
Could you help explain and possibly resolve an issue I'm having with an InDesign CS4 pdf file where the text and image drop shadows (40%) are printing as solid black blocked shapes from a large format printer. The file encompasses 1 overall image, 1 image with drop shadow, 3 text frames with drop shadow effect applied to the text and 1 group set of simple rectangular and ellipse objects with a glow.
My colleagues in graduate school experienced the same with their files and the output bureau's rasterized the pdf file in Photoshop where it printed out with good resolution. Shouldn't this be resolved first in InDesign rather than rasterizing the file?
I appreciate any help and insight you could offer myself and my colleagues.
    Thank you, Kathryn

The printing service uses Acrobat 8 Pro and HP large format printer. My InDesign CS4 document is in the color mode of RGB and color type as Process. I saved it as a pdf file using the standard settings as follows: Preset: High Quality Print, Standard: None and Compatibility: Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3). Are there options I should be paying more attention to when creating the PDF file? Also, I was reading up on Peter Spier's response links.
This brings me to the next question...I'm creating a photo book for grad school with approximately 40 pages of images (RGB, 300dpi) with feathered drop shadows. What would be the best settings to use when exporting as a pdf file for printing services?
    Thank you for your help.

  • AI images not printing correctly from InDesign

    (Reposting from Color Management Forum)
First off, please forgive me if this is  not the right forum or if I am not using the right terms.  I am the network admin for our company and I'm posting this on behalf of our designer.
We recently added PostScript drivers to our Sharp printers, and we have been seeing odd printing results when printing embedded .AI files.
We use CreativeSuite CS5, and our developer has hundreds of images with pure white and transparent backgrounds stored in .AI format.  When these images are embedded/linked to an Indesign document they print with a solid black background and what appears to be an inverted color pattern, almost like a photo negative.
All embedded EPS images print fine.  The affected .AI files print fine when printed directly from Illustrator.
The embedded images print fine using a PCL driver.  We are trying to implement the Postscript driver for better color quality.
    Any ideas?
(We are using Windows XP SP3, x86
Server based network printing on Windows 2003 x86)
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

Unfortunately, no we are still dealing with it.  Like you, I have found very little on this anywhere else.
Sharp has been very helpful, trying to see if it is something in the PS drivers, but to no avail.  I'm pretty confident that there is nothing wrong with the PS drivers since everything else prints just fine.
So far, our designer is either converting images to EPS documents or converting the InDesign file to PDF before printing.  Frustrating and time consuming are an understatement, but it is getting the job done.
If you do find something, please post back here! I'll do the same.
    Matt
