Why are Macbooks made out of plastic?

I have ordered a Macbook and it should be here in about a week. As I read these discussions I'm getting concerned that since the Macbook is plastic, it is going to develop cracks and pieces of plastic will start falling off. That never happened with my old Dell laptop. I haven't told my wife I ordered the Mac so she's going to freak a little a lot probably) in that I'm paying $1800 for a laptop, especially if the case starts cracking and falling apart, while the case on her $700 Dell PC is still in good shape. Is there any good reason that the Macbook is made of plastic?

Mine is almost two years old and I have no cracks or broken plastic. Keep in mind, Apple has sold millions of MacBooks and the Apple Discussions is only the emergency room of the hospital. You're not going to see posts from the millions and millions of MacBook owners who are NOT having a problem. They're not visiting the emergency room. iBooks were plastic from 1999 until they were discontinued in 2006. Apple has had plenty of time to research the options and since this is a user-to-user forum, none of us can speak for why Apple has made decisions like this. So, you're not going to find an answer to your question here.

  • Why are commands "grayed out" on edit tab on Elements 9?

Why are commands "grayed out" (not available) on the edit tab on Elements 9?

It’s often awaiting a user action e.g. opening a photo in the main Editor space or making a selection or a new layer or flattening an image or changing bit depth etc.

why are menus grayed-out in trial version? how can I use the effects then?

Every piece of software has a learning curve, and its own terminology.  After Effects is a complex professional tool, used by home enthusiasts right through to feature film makers.
There's plenty of very user friendly video editing software that will do the tasks you've mentioned easily.  Might I suggest Adobe Premiere Elements.
For the record, you can't apply an effect to anything in After Effects until you have selected a target layer in the timeline.  This functionality is true of any video editing or compositing software I can think of,

  • Why are songs greyed out in my itunes

Why are songs greyed out on iTunes?  The songs will play within iTunes, but will not sync with my iPod Classic 160G.  How do I correct this situation?

Try posting in the iTunes Match forum, you'll probably find more knowledgeable folks there.

  • After syncing my music onto my iphone5, why are songs grayed out and not playable

after syncing my music onto my iphone5, why are songs grayed out and not playable?

If you are syncing music to the iPhone automatically, you won't be able to drag and drop tracks on to the iPhone and the music will be grayed out.
You'll have to Manually Manage the music.
Configure iPhone, iPad, or iPod for manual management
If you have iTunes 7 or later*, follow these instructions:
Connect the device to your computer.
    Open iTunes.
Select iPhone, iPad, or iPod in the Devices list.
Click the Summary tab and select "Manually manage music and videos".
    Click Apply.
Even when you have enabled manual management, you can still sync some content automatically. Select any content tab, such as Video, to enable automatic syncing for that type of content.

  • Why are Macbooks so much more expensive in NZ compared to US?

    Hi,
Just wondering why the apple products are so much more expensive in NZ than in US. I am looking at getting a new macbook pro 17" and saw it is NZ$4149, and US$2500. So I used the exchange rates to convert US$2500 to NZ$. It came to approx $3000. So why are they making us pay another $1000 in NZ??

    Economies of scale most likely.
    https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Economies_of_scale
Your question should be looked at in the opposite "Why are US citizens getting a discount?"
If you compare the two economies and what people tend to buy perhaps that would shed some light.
Perhaps the "Apple halo effect" doesn't reach OZ?

  • Why are files grayed out in finder on MacBook ?

I am trying to upload a file (receipt pdf to insurance website) and the file is grayed out when I browse to select it from the website and it won't let me select it. When I look at in Finder it is there not grayed out.  When I am on the website most of my files are grayed out. I am new to the Mac world. What am I doing wrong?  Thanks.

Do you have the finder option to show all File Extension turned on? Could be the file you are selecting is not a PDF file? Or the file you need to Upload to the website page has to be in some other format than PDF. Like a Text file.
In most cases any file that is not in the correct format for a program you are using, or as in your case uplaoding to a website, either don't show up or are greyed out making them NON selectable.

  • Why are my pics out of folder order when I sync to my computer

Can someone please explain why when I sync my iphone 4s the pics on my home computer folder are correct and in order but once
I sync to my phone they are scrambled?

Thumbnails always look better because they are smaller and smaller always improves definition. How does the video look when played directly from the camera, say through a TV? I suspect that the video itself is out of focus and you couldn't notice until you blew up the picture.a guess.

  • Why are my gradients out of Illustrator coming out as NChannel?

I'm running into an issue with printing gradients. I build the file in Adobe Illustrator CC, in CMYK. I build a gradient of 100% Cyan to 1% Cyan. Save as a PDF 1.5, 1.6 or 1.7. When I look at the PDF with Acrobat it says the gradients are NChannel color space. To get them to work correctly I have to convert them to CMYK. Is there a reason why Illustrator changes the gradients to NChannel and not the image's color space?

Exactly where and when are you getting this message, please post a screenshot. Who is you rcolro specified in the swatches palette. They should be CMYK process and not spot if CMYK is what you are looking for.
NCHannel used for defining spot colors. DeviceN was added to PDF in the PDF 1.4 specifications. It enables more accurate handling of color blending by including additional dot gain and color mixing information.
    Check out the print guide
    http://partners.adobe.com/public/asn/en/print_resource_center/AC7_PrintingGuide.pdf
To convert a document’s colors to a different color space:
In the Convert Colors dialog box, select an option from the list of color spaces and colorants used in the document. You can specify different conversion options for different color spaces and colorants. For example, you could embed separate color profiles to calibrate color for gray- scale, RGB, and CMYK objects. This strategy could be useful if your RIP color-manages PDF files or if you are sharing PDF files with others.
Select an option from the Action menu:
    • Preserve keeps objects in the selected color space when you output the document.
    • Convert uses the destination space profile to convert color objects to a common ICC profile for an output device.
    • Decalibrate removes embedded profiles from the color objects in that color space.
Choose a destination profile, which should accurately define the target output device.
    Specify which pages to convert.
Specify whether to embed the profile. If you embed the profile as a source color space, Acrobat tags all images with the destination profile. If you embed it as an output intent, Acrobat uses the destination profile as the output intent, replacing any existing output intent.
Select Preserve Black Objects to prevent text in RGB black, or other black objects, from being converted to rich black when converted to CMYK.
Depending on the color spaces you select, the Convert Colors command will preserve, convert, or map color values from the source color space to the specified destination space as follows:
Objects with untagged RGB data (DeviceRGB) convert from the working space RGB profile to the CMYK gamut of the destination space. Untagged CMYK (DeviceCMYK) and grayscale (DeviceGray) values are converted in the same way.
Objects in device-independent color spaces (CalGray, CalRGB, or CIE L*a*b) can be preserved or converted. If they are converted, Acrobat uses the device-independent object’s embedded profile information.
Objects set in spot colors (including Separation, DeviceN, and NChannel color spaces) can
be preserved, converted, or mapped (aliased) to any other ink present in the document. Spot colors can also be mapped to a CMYK process color, if the process color model of the destina- tion space is CMYK. Spot colors mapped to other inks can be previewed in the Output Preview dialog box.

  • Why are playlists made in iTunes not pushing to my iPhone, even though I have iTunes Match?

I have made a couple both Smart and regular playlists on iTunes. Then I clicked Store > Update iTunes Match.  It updated and yet the playlists are not on my phone... I shouldn't have to sync my phone should I?

A solution I've mentioned in other threads for iTunes Match not syncing playlists to iPhone is to log out of your iTunes Account (Apple ID) in the iTunes & App Store page of Settings, turn phone off, then on, then log in again. This has solved problems for a number of people.  Cheers.

  • Why are my albums out of order chronologically?

Ok so I have my library sorted Album by Artist/Year. This worked fine until just recently. I bought some Lady Gaga Remix EPs, and things are starting to get out of order now. However, everything is bought from the iTunes store, so I don't know why it would be messing up. Here is what the stuff looks like:
    The Fame (2008)
    Just Dance Remixes 2 (2008)
    Poker Face Remixes (2008)
    Bad Romance Remixes (2009)
    The Cherrytree Sessions (2009)
    Christmas Tree (2009)
    LoveGame Remixes (2009)
    Paparazzi Remixes (2009)
    Paparazzi Remixes 2 (2009)
    Bad Romance Remixes 2 (2010)
The Fame Monster (2010 (this is the explicit version, so was released a couple months after the original))
    The Remix (2010)
    Born This Way (2011)
Born This Way The Remix (2011)
    A Very Gaga Holiday (2011)
    Telephone Remixes (2010)
    It should look like
    The Fame (2008)
    Just Dance Remixes 2 (2008)
    Poker Face Remixes (2008)
    The Cherrytree Sessions (2009)
    Christmas Tree (2009)
    LoveGame Remixes (2009)
    Paparazzi Remixes (2009)
    Paparazzi Remixes 2 (2009)
    Bad Romance Remixes (2009)
    The Fame Monster (2010)
    Bad Romance Remixes 2 (2010)
    Telephone Remixes (2010)
    The Remix (2010)
    Born This Way (2011)
Born This Way The Remix (2011)
    A Very Gaga Holiday (2011)
The bolded things are ones that are wrong. They are also the 3 most recent items of these that I bought.
I can understand (maybe) the mix-up of same-year things not being in order, but having a 2010 thing be after the 2011 stuff makes no sense. Especially when they all have the correct years and were bought from the iTunes store...
Any ideas? Also have a couple other albums with similar problems, but not bought from the iTunes store, so I attributed it to that.

You may want to make sure some of these albums are not checking the compilation
box under Get Info.   That has screwed up my sorting in the past.

  • Why are MacBooks so slow using Wifi?

The irony is I've had to jump on my Windows PC to troubleshoot.  Not a single issue with any device in the house connecting to the Wifi and using internet.  Just the MacBook Air.  Why hasn't Apple addressed this?  I can see by the numerous posts and questions this is a very common issue that has been going on for years and the concerning thing is how many similar posts to mine don't seem to get resolved.
Feel duped by Apple and all the hype about their PCs versus Windows based PCs.  Paid double for my laptop and yes it looks pretty and is nice and small, but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work.  Isn't the point you don't have to be a computer geek to make these things run.
Too bad the laptops aren't as handy as the phones and IPads.
    Dissapointed,

If MacBooks are inherently slow when using Wi-Fi then there is something wrong with all of mine, because they run like blazes.

Your Mac obviously performed well when you bought it, or you would have either immediately returned it for a 100% refund or called AppleCare, who would have fixed it. If AppleCare is no longer an option for you then you have to provide specific details, ask others to help you, and then patiently wait for competent assistance. The only questions that remain unresolved are the ones that lack those requirements. There is an abundance of useful information on this site that will help, if you want to fix your problem and not just rant about it.
Specific guidance requires specific details - until you can provide them read the following:
OS X Mountain Lion: If your Mac runs slowly The article is very cursory, but be sure to read through to the end. Unfortunately the "Repair a disk" link at the end points to nothing useful, so use this one: Disk Utility.
General purpose Mac troubleshooting guide: Isolating issues in Mac OS X
Creating a temporary account to isolate user-specific problems: Isolating an issue by using another user account
Memory limitations: Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used
Identifying resource hogs and other tips: Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity
To identify potential hardware problems: Apple Hardware Test
To resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance, use Disk Utility.
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
To repair a potentially corrupt hard disk, so that you may recover its data prior to replacing it, and subsequently reinstall Mac OS X: OS X Recovery (applies only to Lion and later versions of OS X)

  • Why Are My Pics Out of Focus in iMovie?

The pictures I downloaded to my imovie are in focus just fine in the thumbnails but when I play the movie they all are out-of-focus on the screen. Could you help me?

  • Why are my masks out of sync in final export?

I have been attempting to export out a final version of a project and have found that some of my masks are not lining up.
When I Re-check the composition the masks are fine and line up.
    Here is an example:
    EXPORT
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/f9qavqspjp4b1a1/RENDER_MEv10_00644.png
    COMP
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/il3ktf4rpzj5iee/Screen%20Shot%202013-06-30%20at%205.08.02%20PM.p ng
I have done the following to try figure this out (nothing hs worked)
    - Preserved frame rates in comp settings
    - checked everything is the same frame rate (25fps)
    - baked the mask (key everyframe)
Does anyone know how to solve this ?
    Cheers Pie

If it works in the composition at full rez then you may have a disk cache problem. Update AE, Turn off Disk Cache, and purge everything.
Try rendering from Adobe Media Encoder.
You still haven't lifted the hood. I have almost know idea how you set up the comp, where the footage comes from, or what you are doing that could cause this very odd behavior. This looks more like a transfer or layer order problem than a frame rate problem. This could be caused by 3D layer order, an adjustment layer, or a bunch of other things. It could even have something do to with open GL rendering. Once again, very little information about a project results in very little help.

  • Why are songs greyed-out in my iPhone's sync queue?

I fired up iTunes for the first time on a new computer and plugged-in a 2 week-old iPhone 4s to sync about 250 or so songs that were pre-existing on the computer.
The music is not purchased through iTunes; merely ripped from CDs ages ago. It's music that existed on my prior iPhone (4) with no problems.
Now, the music won't sync to my new iPhone. It shows up in iTunes, on the device's song list - but greyed-out. It appears to be in queue to transfer, but it won't sync. I have purchased music on my phone that I downloaded via wifi that works fine...
Any ideas? This is intensely frustrating.

I forgot to mention that when I look at the playlist that has been tranferred to the iPhone all the ones that won't play and are greyed out have a sync symbol next to the check mark.
