Why are mail attachments winmail.dat?

Why are the attachments on my emails coming through as winmail.dat now?  Even Word (.doc) and photos (.jpg) attachments come through as winmail.dat on my macbook, ipad and iphone.

Did they come from someone using Windows?

I recently purchased an Iphone 6plus and I am receiving pdf attachments that are shown as winmail.dat attachments on the iphone. When I check the same e-mail on my macbook pro the attachment is a pdf and I can open it. Why is this happening?

I had this problem too after i upgdatd to OS X Mavericks... only the songs on my iphone 5s that i purchased from itunes would play.
i read something about it being a syncing issue. when you plug your phone into your computer with the usb cable, the person said to switch from automatic syncing of itunes to the "manual" option. mine was already set to manual so i wasn't sure anything would work. BUT, when i plugged my phone into my computer, it started to sync all of my music on my phone again (top of itunes bar where song playing/time is listed said "now syncing 123/534 songs to x's iphone"). once that was completed, i checked the music app on my iphone and everything was back to normal!
so, i would suggest setting your music syncing settings to manual if you haven't tried that yet!
    hope this helps!

  • Unrecocognisable email attachments WINMAIL.DAT

my N95-8Gb sometimes receive unrecocognisable email attachments (WINMAIL.DAT). I can read maybe 1st line of the email msg but unable to view anymore than this. From what I can gather is that msgs seem to be in a format that my n95-8Gb cannot decipher and it just renames the file.
As I read I generally read all my emails in the html, this is very frustrating....
    Anybody got any ideas, help

  • HT1338 pdf attachments and excel spreadsheet attachments are opening as winmail.dat and the pages are blank when you open them.

All of a sudden the e-mail attachments I send to my MacBook Pro from my PC Laptop open up as winmail.dat as a blank sheet of paper.   This only started happening within the last week. Before that everything was fine.  I check my PC and confirmed the attachments are set up to be sent in HTML.   Any suggestions?

I am having the same issue.
Luckily I have only migrated my own mailbox to office365.
Tried both true and false TNEFEnabled on both onpremise and office365 via powershell and confirmed that both have been applied.
If I send the email as a plain text then the attachment works ok. If I send it as HTML then I get winmail.dat.
The above KB doesnt really help me, sending plain text emails is like going back to the dark ages!
I am sending from outlook to outlook (I send from my external email address, to my work email address and visa-versa)
If someone with an onpremise mailbox sends me an email, the attachment works ok.
If someone sends me an attachment via hotmail, the attachment works ok.
It seems to only effect emails I send to myself through outlook, i am sending it through a POP3 account to our onpremise exchange 2010 which forwards the email to office365

  • HT2614 Missing attachments - winmail.dat instead

I have checked the RTF setting and it does not apply in this case. (I am sending myself attachment from work.)  I am trying to receive .doc and .pdf.  This has only been going on for a few weeks.  My attachments are removed and in their place is a winmail.dat attachment.  What changed?  Help!

Winmail.dat files are attachments sent by Microsoft mail applications (Outlook, Outlook Express or Exchange) on a proprietary format called TNEF (transport neutral encapsulation format). Being a non-standard attachment format, users from other e-mail clients (like Thunderbird or Foxmail) cannot natively read them.
But Enolsoft Winmail Viewer can help Mac users open it.

  • Cannot open mime attachments (winmail.dat) on my iPhone 4.0 ? Please Help!

I am a Doctor by profession and I need to access my email & its attachments asap and on the go, because they contain vital info like patient charts, flight details, work appointments etc.
I have just bought my iPhone 4.0, but I didn't know that the first hurdle I'll face would be that I cannot access this simple mime attachment!
I sidelined the Blackberry for an iPhone and now I'm ruing my decision. Can anyone please suggest a method for me to access this winmail.dat attachment.
    Please HELP!

RIM addresses this with their dedicated email delivery service for the Blackberry. Completely different from the iPhone's Mail app, all email with a Blackberry goes through RIM's dedicated email delivery service. The iPhone's Mail app communicates direct with the incoming mail server for an email account - no different from accessing an email account with an email client on your computer.
This is a Microsoft problem, and Apple doesn't include an option to convert RTF or HTML to plain text, which I don't believe would make any difference if this were an option with the iPhone's Mail app since I believe this isn't done direct with the Blackberry - this is done at the server with RIM's dedicated email delivery service for the Blackberry.

  • Where are mail attachments stored?

On my Macbook Pro all attachments are available to be opened when I'm not connected to the internet. I assumed this was true with ipad but could not open attachments on plane yesterday. So, I assume in ipad attachments are stored on server (I use mobile me) and must be opened/downloaded individually then saved in other apps like Goodreader or Pages. If this is true, is there any way to automatically store attachments like a mac does in mail downloads?

Mail attachments are stored on the server. You need to tap on the attachment to down load them to the iPad. The same holds true for a desktop or laptop computer.
If your need to view an attachment where you don't have an Internet connection it is best to open the attachment before hand when you an internet connection.

  • Where are Mail attachments (IMAP)

can i access mail attachments in "Local Mail" or IMAP based email?
i have a series of 3-ring binders with resumes and portfolios in them and i am trying to move this "database" to a digital database. since i am not sure that i have sorted all the EMAILS from which these resumes and portfolios came, i don't want to have to find every email sent with these printed documents and it would be much easier to scroll through the attachments in coverflow and grab the ones i need digitally while trashing the corresponding paper version...
    ideas?
    thanks.

  • HT4898 why are mail accounts no longer available with migration to  icloud

I can't get my macbook to update past OS X 10.5.8 and don't understand why so I have only updated my mail to update to icloud however when I read the detail it says mail accounts won't update to icloud.  I guess there are two questions here I don't understand what to do about either issue the inability to update to a high enough version to go to icloud and why the mail account won't update

If you have chosen the 'email only' option nothing will happen until the end of June. At that point your email will be migrated to the iCloud server and will of course not be accessible at the MobileMe server settings.
As Apple say, you can then access it at http://icloud.com - what they don't say is that you can manually set the Mail application up to access it -
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard

  • Why are PDF attachments are showing up on the body of emails, instead of as actual attachments?

PDF attachments are showing up in the body of my emails rather than as attachments. I need to be able to open them in other programs, eg notability, mad can't do that if they're not real attachments. On my other devices they're showing up at regular attachments.

When a PDF that has only one page is attached to an email the Mail app will display the conte tents of the PDF in the body of the email. But the PDF is still an attachment. Tap on the PDF to open in iBooks or forward it to your computer to open it there. Again, the one page PDF will display the contents of the single page but the PDF is still an attachment and can be used like any other attachment.
When a PDF that has more than one page is attached to an email the Mail app only displays the icon for an attachment.

  • Why are my attachments loaded into the body of my email

I just started using mail instead of Thunderbird. When I want to include an attachment (a document) in an email, it opens into the body of my letter instead of being an attachment that the sender can open. How to change that?
    imac running maverick 10.9.2

Yes, I am the sender and  the problem originated with me, not the recipient. (I had already selected "always insert attachments at end of message" but it doesn't seem to hold after logging in to mail again. ) Everytime I chose a file to attach from my desktop or documents, it inserted itself completely open in the body of my email, directly beneath the text. Whenever I tried to delete only the attachment, it saved a copy of my message in the trash (including the open attachment) This continued despite quitting mail, restarting, and even after updating to 10.9.2. This evening I got the attachment to paste as a thumbnail, so I don't know what is going on. I sent a test message and it seemed ok. Hopefully it will last.  Could this have been cause by an email I received with a document open in the body?
Another question...I notice when I view messages in my "sent' folder as a list, there isnt any attachement icon like I see in my inbox..why? If i open the individual message, the paperclip icon is displayed

  • Why are mp3 attachments no longer sounding?

After an erase and install of Tiger, emails with mp3 attachments are inaudible. If I double click the mp3 icon Quick Time will play them, but not the player in the email body! Alert sounds work OK.
    Thanks,
    Barney

I couldn't solve the problem so I simply backed up, erased, and reinstalled everything! Mp3's are audible again.

  • Why are Email attachments not coming through to me from senders??

Emails are being received and the sender says there is an attachment but no attachment can be seen.

Firefox doesn't do email, it's strictly a web browser.
If you are using Firefox to access your mail, you are using "web-mail". You need to seek support from your service provider or a forum for that service.
If your problem is with Mozilla Thunderbird, see this forum for support.

  • Why are photo attachments received on my ipad not looking correct?

Often when I receive a photo attachment in an email the photos have lines across them and different colors of hazy film or shading or bars in them. When I open the same email and photo attachment on my iMac or a desktop computer the photos are fine. This is quite annoying. Thanks.

Yes, saved photos go to Camera Roll.
