Why are my browsers suddenly displaying foreign language?
and how do i fix it. both safari and ff started displaying some content (not all) in foreign characters. for example, going to cnn.com, some article headers are no longerr english. or on wikipedia's english site, most of the content is no longer in english. anyone know how can fix this. and for the record, apple.com is still in english. thanks.
Where are you located? I have lived in Mexico for years and have had all my sights in English, just last month all my sites defaulted to Spanish, I had to go into preferences on each program and put the default language into English. I am not sure why it started to do this, and it was a pain to go into all the programs and change it. One note though, Facebook can take several tries to default to English and it will at times revert back to Spanish when it wants. If you are in the U.S. your default should be English and I would check my internet address to make sure it is a U.S. address. Their are several sites you can go to check this. this site will tell you where your IP is from. http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?Getlocation

Why are animated gifs not displaying animations in the preview?
Why are animated gifs not displaying animations in the preview?
My coworkers and I are not seeing a animation in the preview pane in Adobe Bridge CS6 even when clicking the play button in the preview window. However, we do see a graphic of the first frame and one person sees 1 frame when clicking play and one other frame and then the animation stops, however, that is not the complete animation.
I'm using Windows 7 32 bit
My coworkers are using a mac.
One coworker has apple OS Mountain Lion with a Intel Quad-Core Xeon – 64 bit system.
Is this fixable or in the works as a patch? Otherwise we have to open these docs in a browser in order to view them properly.I've just come to the realization that some animated gifs do play fine and others do not. A coworker of mine suggests that if it's an animation made via Adobe Photoshop, it'll work in bridge but will not if it's made using something else.

Why are my images suddenly darker in camera raw and photoshop C4 than when I open them in bridge?
"Catalog"? Are you referencing Ps Elements perhaps?

Why are my prints suddenly awful?
Similar questions seem to have been asked already, but here is my specific problem.
I have until now had absolutely no problems printing with an ICC profile, allowing CS2 to colour manage. I am using ICI's Olmec satin paper in an Epson R800, with ICI's own ICC profile. ICM in the printer driver is selected, with no colour management. My monitor is regularly calibrated.
Suddenly, when I print, the colours, particularly greens, are awful (a sort of washed-out orange-brown) - I am losing most of the detail in foliage. I thought it was a printer problem, but viewing the proof colours in CS2 gives me the same poor colour rendition - a beautiful shot turns into a horror when I select view>proof colours. So it appears that CS2 is correctly applying the profile - the print colours matching the proof colours on screen. But why the massive colour space shift (working space has always been ProRGB, but it doesn't make any difference if I change it to sRGB)? Corrupt ICC profile? I don't think so, because I uninstalled it and reinstalled the original copy.
I would like to try and print letting the printer manage the colour - does anyone know how I can do this using the ICI profile? I have associated the profile with the printer, but I don't see how to set this in the printer dialogue box. In advanced settings, there is a profile drop-down box that supposedly allows you to use custom profiles, but the only one appearing there is 'EPSON standard'.
All comments/suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks
DaveDavid,
For all you've said, I feel you're doing the right thing, but as my suggestions were just stretching for a possible cause of the problem, I'll go back to my initial reply and ask if you're certain your profile loader is working? I don't have the Spyder software, so I'm not sure what the profile loader is for it, but if it works similarly to the Monacor EZColor software for my OptixXR, then a shortcut for it will be added to the Start Menu > Programs > Startup folder so that it is launched each time you boot your PC. It should then load the profile last created when you calibrated your monitor. If the loader is missing or somehow corrupted and thus not loading the profile, then that may well be the source of the problem.
The fact that colors look correct on your XP desktop doesn't necessarily mean that the profile is loaded, although it does suggest that. Unless you are viewing the images in some color managed application, which XP itself isn't, nor are its image viewers, then I'm pretty certain you are seeing all images displayed pretty much as if they were not tagged with a profile themself. That is, most likely they are being shown as if they were sRGB images, and your default monitor setting (profile ignored) may already be close enoughh to sRGB to provide images that look pretty darn good. If your profile is loading correctly and if the behavior is like what I've seen, then you will observe a slight shift in colors on your monitor once the profile loader has loaded the monitor profile to the LUT of your graphics chipset.
Also, the presence of a monitor profile in any kind of drop-down menu as in Photoshop's color settings dialog, simply means that profile exists on your system. It does not mean the profile is loaded.
Again, everything I see you saying sure makes it look at if all should be in good order, yet just isn't for some reason. Such behaviors as that just tend to suggest a corrupt file.
If you want to confirm your monitor profile is in fact being loaded correctly, I suggest you download this free and simple-to-use tool from Xrite, called DisplayProfile: http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=757&Action=support&SoftwareID=539
DisplayProfile is a standalone executable that, upon launch, initially shows what monitor profile is currently loaded and active. It should report to you the profile you created with your Spyder. If you select any other profile in the list that is tagged with an asterisk (indicates gamma tagged profile suitable for loading to the LUT), it will reload the LUT with that profile and you can easily see how that affects your monitors colors on-the-fly.
Recapping what you've said here, the current process you follow is the same that you've always taken and used successfully, and nothing to your knowledge has changed? That is, you've been successfully using the R800 and the paper and profiles mentioned, with no changes that you're aware of? As you said, I'd not really expect your original Olmec profile to be corrupted as well as the copy that has been in use. If this "suddenly, when I print" became a problem only recently, then Lawrence's suggestion of reverting to a System Restore point prior to the time you first observed the problem may well be worth doing. Of course, this assumes you have System Restore active so that checkpoints are periodically created, and they span the time period in question.
In the end, it may also be just as you last said...that a custom profile for your paper is needed. On my R1800, I've been very happy with the Espon Ultra Premium Luster, Velvet Fine Art and Ultrasmooth Fine Art papers in most cases, each with their associated Epson profiles. However, there do seem to be some images I'll print to the latter 2 papers where they seem more difficult to judge the color saturation relative to the softproof. I also now remember how I stumbled along ( http://ambress.com/photoshop/softproof ) for a while with having "Preserve RGB Colors" mistakenly enabled in the softproof settings, and that was badly affecting the softproofing of prints made to Epson Enhanced Matte and the Premium Luster...something else worth mentioning, as another time for you to check. Generally, it should be disabled as I understand things.
Good luck!

Update not displaying foreign language characters
I just upgraded to iTunes 9.1 for Windows 7, and now when I open it, the library no longer displays foreign characters (most specifically Japanese and Korean) anymore. It just shows boxes where the text should be. I'm worried that if I re-sync my iPod, it will only display boxes on that, too. Before I updated, everything was working fine and the library had no problem displaying foreign characters. Is there a way to fix this problem?

Why are my slices suddenly visable?
Hey folks. I was wondering if anyone could explain (and remedy) why the slices on my home page are suddenly visable. For the last four years they weren't. And oddly enough, with one browser (Safari) they're still not visable, but with other browsers they are. Mainly the horizontal slice lines on my home page. Please take a look:
hhttp://www.toilgirls.com
I guess I'm wondering if I accidentally allowed my slice lines to be visable.
Thanks very much in advance!
LesLooks like the image coverart_22.jpg is to large for the cell its in .... forceing the table to grow larger and therby making "gaps" in the table cells so the slices show.
There are 2 easy fix ...
1. cut some px of the bottom of the coverart_22.jpg (50-100px) and give the cell its in a valign="top" so the image stays at top of the cell
40. <tr>
41. <td colspan=3><img src="images/coverimages/coverart_01.jpg" width=440 height=298 alt="" valign="top"></td>
42. <td colspan=2><img src="images/coverimages/coverart_02.jpg" width=489 height=298 alt=""></td>
43. <td rowspan=15><img src="images/coverimages/coverart_22.jpg" width=79 height=1080 alt="" valign="top"></td>
44. <td><img src="../../../Users/brianclarke/Desktop/ToilGirls%20Site/toilgirls/images/spacer.gif" width=1 height=298 alt=""></td>
45. </tr>
btw: i see you have align middel and top in your code... i know GL alows for this but thats actualy wrong
You only use align for directions left, center, or right.
You use valign for directions top, middle, bottom, or basline.
2. Insted of cutting the image you merge the containg cell with the cell udner it and therby make room for the image inside it. by setting the rowspan to 16 + using valing="top" on the cell and remove the <td></td> in line 108
40. <tr>
41. <td colspan=3><img src="images/coverimages/coverart_01.jpg" width=440 height=298 alt="" valign="top"></td>
42. <td colspan=2><img src="images/coverimages/coverart_02.jpg" width=489 height=298 alt=""></td>
43. <td rowspan=16><img src="images/coverimages/coverart_22.jpg" width=79 height=1080 alt="" valign="top"></td>
44. <td><img src="../../../Users/brianclarke/Desktop/ToilGirls%20Site/toilgirls/images/spacer.gif" width=1 height=298 alt=""></td>
45. </tr>
105. <tr>
106. <td colspan=2><a onmouseover="changeImages( /*CMP*/'coverart_20',/*URL*/'images/coverimages/coverart_20a.jpg');return true" onmouseout="changeImages( /*CMP*/'coverart_20',/*URL*/'images/coverimages/coverart_20.jpg');return true" href="links.html"><img src="images/coverimages/coverart_20.jpg" name="coverart_20" width=193 height=70 alt="" border="0"></a></td>
107. <td colspan=3><img src="images/coverimages/coverart_21.jpg" width=736 height=70 alt=""></td>
108. <td></td>
109. <td><img src="../../../Users/brianclarke/Desktop/ToilGirls%20Site/toilgirls/images/spacer.gif" width=1 height=70 alt=""></td>

Why are the colors suddenly negative?
The colors on my iMac g4 10.4.4 are suddenly inverted...they look like photo negatives..I've tried to change it back in System Preferences and by shutting down and restarting but nothing helps...the colors are still all wrong...there must be something simple to change them back to normal but I don't know what it is..any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you want to know the reason why open System Preferences then click on Universal Access. Go down to Display and you will see options for Black on White and White on Black.
These can be set with a set of key commands, which you must have hit once by mistake (sounds odd but I did it once myself so I know it can happen).
If you want to make sure it doesn't happen again in System Preferences go to Keyboard & Mouse then Keyboard Shortcuts then turn off all the Universal Access commands. -
I am away for a year and have been downloading pictures from my camera - a FUJIFILM EXR compact for the last 15 weeks into files on my mac using IPHOTO no problem...suddenly in the last 2 days I have tried to do this and IPHOTO opens the pictures ok but wont downoad them as they are now JPEG? have I switched something over inadvertently or what - help please!!!! many thanks
sorry maybe Im not making my issue clear...thanks for answering anyway:
over the last years- but 15 weeks specifically I have downloaded photos from my camers card- putting it straight into the apple mac and then opening IPHOTO then i am able to click and put the pics into my folders in IPHOTO but as of 2 days ago - the camera card went in, the pics opened BUT there is an error message which states iphoto cannot save them to file......as they are JPEGS
I can see that others too have had this issue and there are 'answers' but I am a complete novice and cannot understand the answers given and need someone to 'hand hold me' through a step by step this is what you must do....
so hope that now is cleared as to why there is a 'problem'
hope you can still help me thanks for you time -
Why are my browsers (and app store) crashing?
First, some context.
I got my iMac last year around July. It worked well. Upgraded to Mountain Lion and everything seemed ok. Yes there were crashes here and there but they were few and far between.
Around November, I noticed that things began to get strange. The crashes got more and more frequent and the system would just reboot itself and restart. I also noticed language in some of the apps like Safari began to change to Arabic script.
No amount of reporting to Apple did any good.
I tried to reinstall Mountain Lion but there was a problem installing it as it would download but then would not reinstall, it would just loop back to the initial install page.
I bit the bullet and took it in to get repaired since it was still under warranty. At first everyone that looked at it thought it was a hardware issue but when diagnostics was done, it was determined that it was a software problem. So my iMac was then reformatted and set back to its initial factory settings that it came with (10.6)
After two weeks of languishing without it, I brought it back, promptly downloaded 10.8.2 again and installed it, no problems.
Or so I thought. Now Safari crashes again. I downloaded Firefox but the same problems occurred. Now the App store has begun crashing and restarting.
Below is the crash report.
I see a lot of these now.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
Why are some movies only available in languages other than the original version?
I have mentionned this before, and it keeps happening, and it is oh so annoying! Why in the world would you make a movie available in a translated version, but not in the original? This has happened to me several times now, and it is incredibly frustrating. At least when buying movies on Amazon, I always easily know what language it will be in! Films in French? Some are just in French, some are in French and others. Films in Dutch? Quite a few are originals with Dutch, why not do the same in French?
Take it up with whomever or whatever company distributes those films in your country. Those sorts of options are up to the distributors, not Apple. Only the company or people who own or control the distribution rights to the intellectual property can say what is or is not put up in the iTunes Store.

Why are TypeKit fonts not displaying correctly in Pages (iWork)?
I have just subscribed to TypeKit and am experiencing highly peculiar behavior from the two fonts I’m using in Pages (iWork): Basically, fonts in my document don’t respond appropriately to requested changes in style. For example, if I increase the point size by one point using the the formatting commands built into Pages, the font drops a point size. I’ve had the same experience using the kerning command, where the kerning decreases when I have set it to increase. (So far, the only fonts I’ve been using have been Futura PT and Proxima Nova.)
Look at the example in the screenshot: “FEATURED EXPERT” on the top line shows in Pages as being 24pt Futura PT Book. However, “SOLO,” a few lines down, which is definitely displaying as smaller, shows as 25pt Futura PT
In a potentially related issue, when I reopened this same document today, text boxes were suddenly too small for the text (again in Futura PT and Proxima Nova). It was as though Pages was suddenly reading those two fonts differently.
I have had no issues with other (non-TypeKit) fonts in the same document.
Anyone else experiencing anything similar? Any suggested fixes? I'm reluctant to unsync/resync the two affected fonts (the only ones I have sync'd to date) because I don't want to wreck the document! Thanks, Christopher. After I posted my original question, I did come to realize that it was Helvetica not Future PT showing. Here’s what happened, and here’s why I still need some guidance…
The document dropped Future PT because when my wifi signal dropped, the Creative Cloud app displayed this error symbol (see graphic) in my menu bar.
At that point, my computer could no longer access my TypeKit fonts and the document reverted to the system's Helvetica default.
This was not an isolated incident.
If I turn wifi off manually, there is no issue and CC continues to operate in the background as it should, with TypeKit fonts still available.
However, if the wifi drops out on its own, I get the above error symbol and I then lose access to my TypeKit fonts. Very rarely, the CC app will self-correct when the signal is restored. More often than not, I must quit the CC app and relaunch it in order to get things back to normal.
This doesn’t strike me as normal behavior Have you ever encountered anything like it? Do you know of a fix that will allow the CC app to self-correct when the wifi signal is restored?
Any assistance will be appreciated!
Thanks!
P.S. TypeKit troubleshooting doesn’t address this particular issue. -
Why are hyphens between numbers displayed as en dashes?
Try this. Type a few numbers, then a hyphen, then another number. Now look what happens to the hyphen. It looks like an en dash, doesn't it? (If you don't know what an en dash is, type Option-hyphen.) The weird thing is that the character isn't replaced; it's just displayed differently. If you copy the text and paste it into a different program, you get the characters as they were actually entered (unless that program is TextEdit, which has the same problem).
Why does it do this? Does Apple think we're too stupid to type Option-hyphen when we want an en dash? Are they assuming it's always incorrect to place a hyphen between two numbers? I can think of a lot of cases where it's not: nine-digit ZIP codes, telephone numbers and credit card numbers, to name a few. How can I get it to display a hyphen when I enter a hyphen?I've observed the same behavior with all of the fonts you list. The differences between hyphen and n-dash in Sand, Techno, and Textile are subtle. (It helps to increase the font size to 40 or so). The differences in Helvetica are not subtle.
I have two versions of Helvetica on my computer: 3.5a3 and 5.0d8e2, in :System Folder:Fonts: and :System:Library:Fonts: respectively. That is, the older version is in my System 9 folder.
The problem happens with the older versions of the fonts. If I make sure that the newer ones are active in Font Book, the problem doesn't happen. Sand, Techno, and Textile are also old fonts in my System 9 folder.
I'm guessing that this problem was fixed in updated fonts, in some MacOS X update, but that Sand, Techno, and Textile have never been touched. The CY versions of fonts were most likely based on the older fonts, and not updated when their counterparts were.
So, you can probably fix the problem with Helvetica and Courier, by making sure that the old versions are disabled or deleted. As for the rest, you could report them to Apple, but I don't think that Sand, Techno, and Textile have shipped any time recently. The Cyrillic fonts deserve to be fixed, though.
As for a workaround: you could try using a non-breaking hyphen (U2011), or inserting a narrow no-break space (U202F) after the hyphen. Some of these fonts don't have the non-breaking hyphen, so it just gets substituted and looks bad. -
Why are web browsers not controlled by restrictions?
When you turn off Safari in restrictions it apparently doesn't really matter since most apps have built in web browsers (really, as I understand it they are calling mobile safari) but why doesn't Apple just have that restricted when Safari the "app" is turned off? It makes it silly to even allow Safari to be turned off if it isn't a system wide event. I can't see this as a major problem to remedy since I assume most app developers are calling a specific API, so just have that API restricted so parental controls actually work.
For instance if you turn on restrictions but have Evernote installed (or Twitter, or just about any other app) there is usually a way to get to a web page via the about screens because they include mobile safari. I understand not off loading these things to Safari (well in Twitter's case, Evernote's was a bit sloppy) but again this should be controlled inside restrictions via turning off mobile Safari.
Thanks,You are only talking to users here, If you want to make a suggestion to Apple then go to: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

FCP 7.0.3 why are my fonts suddenly not available?
Hi I'm hoping someone has an answer to this:
I just purchsed a new MacPro 8-Core and installed Final Cut Studio (FCP 7) on Lion
It had been working fine, I had a system issue where tried to fix by providing rights to sub-folders and since I did that I have been having huge problems trying to get the Mac running again. One of which happens to be that the fonts which were accessible in FCP prior to the issue are now no longer available. in fact I had a huge collection all accessible. these are all gone. The same goes for Motion and the templates I try to open and use in Final Cut.
Does anypne have a clue as to why this happened and, more importantly, how can I get my fonts back??
thx
fj
PS. I have gone into font book and made sure all fonts are activated.Thx all for your help. I tried all of it. A friend suggested what Brad suggested:
When I created a new user I found that the fonts were once again appearing as they should/were originally in both FCP and Motion. It seems that that one move to assign the rights to subfolders in my user account corrupted all of the font files. Regardless of having tried all of the various ways to fix the system caches and pref files nothing worked to get my user account and the admin account back to normal.
But here's something I didn't expect and maybe it will save someone the hours i wasted. After I created a new account and assigned admin rights, I was still having problems with launching my Adobe applications: "Error 150:30 Licensing has stopped working..." So I uninstalled my entire Creative Suites apps and reinstalled them. This fixed it for the new user account.
But get this: when I went back to the old "corrupt" user account, it was now working again also! Including FCP and Motion and all of the word processing and Adobe apps. I've been editing on them all day and knock on woodhead it all works perfectly again.

Why are most websites only displaying code like text?
Almost all of the web sites that I frequent have began displaying code like text on a blank white background. Some sites still have hyperlinks and images here and there with random text, but others are fully blank with what appears to be the code of the website showing. I wasn't able to access this web site until I tried multiple times and it magically worked, but others are still not working. The only sites that I have tested that have worked from the start are Google related sites (Gmail, Google, Youtube). My yahoo email is inaccessible, which is an important email for me and all other sites that i frequent are inaccessible. One major thing to note is that the sites are also inaccessible on Internet Explorer. This would typically lead you to believe that the problem lies with your connection in some way. I have reset my router/modem and it had no effect. I also have ran CCleaner and have deleted temp files, cookies, and caches. I have tried running Mozilla in safe mode with add-ons disabled as well. My malware protection and antivirus protection find no issues after completing full scans. One last thing to note is that, on both Firefox and IE, certain sites allow to me to access the homepage, such as yahoo, but once I attempt to check my mail the random display of code appears. On IE it simply says that the site cannot be displayed once I click to check my mail. Gmail works perfect on the other hand. The only things that I have done during this time are:
Setup a LogMeIn account (Hamachi) and connected my PC to their service
Downloaded and began using Malewarebytes software to remove malware that I had picked up
Other than those two things it has been the same usual actions on my PC. Could the malware that I had still be effecting me somehow even though it was found/deleted? Is my router to blame even though resetting it does not help? After all the things I have tried, what could it be?What is the content type of those pages if you check that via Tools > Page Info > General?
Is that text/html as it should be or text/plain as your screenshot would suggest?

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
