Why are my fans working so hard? Why is my Air running so hot?

I picked up my 2012 MacBook Air in December. The first two months with the device were great, but then I quickly started to notice a slew of build quality and other sporadic issues. I made a thread a few weeks back about my trackpad that seems to click with the slightest bit of pressure (despite "tap-to-click" functionality being turned off) and after much research, discovered that it's an issue people have dealt with in the past. When I started noticing the issue, I noticed that it would only happen after the computer had been turned on for a little while and started to warm up.
Since then, my Air has started to heat up EXTREMELY quickly, causing the fans to work overtime. Coupled with the heat the computer is giving off, my battery life is suffering sufficiently. I was once able to get 5 hours of battery life with my usage, but now I'm lucky if I get three.
I've had three trips to local Apple Stores and they've all resulted in Apple's faux "Geniuses" telling me that there's nothing wrong with my machine, because they're never able to replicate the problem with a cold boot. I have another appointment today and I'm heading to the mall to get some work done BEFORE the appointment so my computer is nice and warm.
Anyone else experiencing these issues? Have you found a fix? Has Apple replaced your parts/machine? I'm really at wits end; I've had horrible luck with my Apple products this year and I just want it to end.

Do you have pets? If so, a lot of dust and lint may be inside your Macbook Air. Mine has the same issue. It heats up, and usually I have to run a fan on it while playing heavy games like World of Warcraft and such. You can get it cleaned by a professional at Best Buy or other tech stores. Or you could take it apart you're self. I don't suggest this if you've never dealt with taking apart a computer, as you, or any of the computer parts could get shocked.

  • Why is my Macbook running so hot?

I have a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo Macbook from late 2007, recently replaced the hard drive with a 250GB, upgraded to 10.6.8, and installed 4Gb RAM.  Before all of the upgrades and still now, it constantly runs very hot.  I keep it on a hard flat desktop surface and even when I just have iTunes running and a browser open to NYTimes or something with no running flash or video, it runs so hot the fan is on nearly constantly.  I bought a laptop fan but it doesn't seem to help.  CPU is generally 140 degrees F or higher.
This has only started in the last 6-9 months; up until then everything was fine and running cool, or at least if not cool then the fan wasn't coming on so frequently.  What could be going on?

The first thing I would look at is Activity Monitor (Utilities folder)....select the CPU tab and from the drop down menu at the top of that window select 'All Processes' and see if something is using an inordinate amount of  CPU cycles...double or triple digit percents....
    ....also try reseting the SMC...

  • Why is my computer running so hot?

Recently, my MacBook Pro has been running very hot. According to the iStat Widget the processor is running as high as 190 F. I know this is way too hot, and the fans are always on full speed.
However, when I take the battery out, it runs about 40 F cooler. Also, the battery drains in less than an hour, and I just got a new battery a few days ago.
I have already made an appointment with the "Geniuses" but I was wondering if anybody has any idea what the heck is going on.

However, when I take the battery out, it runs about 40 F cooler.
Which happens because the OS throttles the CPU back to 1 GHz when you run on AC without the battery.
As Templeton indicates, most likely you have a rogue process. Failed print jobs, certain widgets, etc., can do this.

  • Why is my macbook running so hot and what to do about it?

My macbook is running pretty hot. I'm thinking this is ultimately bad for it. Is it worthwhile to buy one of those cooling pads? I've heard they really don't work that well. Any solutions? Or suggestions? I know I could just elevate it which I've done but if I have to type it makes it kind of difficult.
    Thanks

a cooling pad has helped mine.

  • Idle Temp of 28C (82F) !!! ...but are the fans working?

Ok now that I have your attention :P
Seriously though here is my info, as no one has really posted everything about their MBP's when posting their temps.
    CPU on Idle
    - A cold boot (was off for few hours)
    ambient (room) temp, 15C:
MBP feels like its been in the fridge and starts up with 8C cpu temp. It gets up to 15C, then 24C and stays in mid 30's after 5-10% cpu usage.
    - Waking up from sleep
    ambient temp, 17C:
MPB feels normal, idle temp of 28-38C.
    - Has been on for several hours
    ambient temp, 17C:
If I'm not running many apps it may idle at 38C/41C.
Other times (like now) 46C. MBP feels warm but not hot.
    High CPU Usage
When running 'yes > /dev/null' in Terminal or ripping a CD cpu temp gets to around 75-80C. But will cool quickly once processor is idle again, to around 45-50C.
    Medium CPU Usage
Let's say 20-50% cpu, this is rough guide, I get temp of mid 50's and sometimes above 60C.
(Note: I used Temperature Monitor for temps, and had usually an ambient temp of 17C, though it might be a little warmer. I also have the firmware update from factory).
    Other info:
    Boot ROM Version: MBP11.0055.B03
    SMC Version: 1.2f10
    And yes I do have a question ^_^;
Is the faint woosh on the left of the keyboard the HD fan or the CPU fan?? Many people are saying with the new firmware their fans run constantly. I initially thought this must be one of the fans.
    MacBook Pro 15" 2GHz, 512MB, Week 28   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   AMD Desktop 2.1GHz, 512MB, WinXP (SP1)

    Those are normal temperatures.
The left fan runs at low speed even when the CPU temps are low. The fans will ramp up, with the right fan running at higher CPU temps. Even with the CPUs running flat out the fans are pretty quiet, especially compared to my old TiBook. During the Hardware Test routines you can hear the fans come on for a short time.
If sensors fail or disconnect the fans will run at full speed constantly. Several people who did the "thermal grease fix" broke sensor connections and had that problem. Speaking of which, I'm glad that thermal grease topic seems to have come to a well-deserved end.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro 2.33 so hot and why are my fans on so high?

So, I'm sitting here with just Safari 3.1.1 open with just this single page, nothing else running on my machine, 3GB of RAM, and activity monitor reports a total 3.5% CPU usage. Why is my Macbook Pro hot like it's really working (not something-is-broken hot, just the temperature I'd expect with Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash all open at the same time) and why are the fans running like a jet engine?
No weird errors in the console, Spotlight isn't indexing, nothing special in the Dashboard, lots of spare space on the HD, permissions repaired, disks have been checked, I turned off icon previewing on the desktop, top doesn't report anything more than Activity Monitor does -- it really seems like my machine is genuinely wheezing at 3.5%. I was just asked if I wouldn't mind working in another room because my machine is so noisy. You heard me right, my Macbook Pro is getting me kicked out of places.
I've put up with the clump of dead pixels, airport connection issues, now-useless DVD burner that an Apple update bricked, and early battery death, but this one is just boggling. If anyone has any advice I'd be grateful.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you have iStatPro? You can download it from the Apple site and see what it is that is running so hot. Under the low usage you describe, the fans should be idling silently. And you might be able to tell what is getting so hot.
If Activity Monitor doesn't show anything, then you might want to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. It sounds like something is getting very hot. If there is a hardware problem, then you should get one or more error codes. The Apple Hardware Test is on Install Disc #1 of the gray discs that came with your Mac--you boot to it by holding down "D". Instructions are on the disc and on the screen.
Also, be sure you have "All Processes" selected on the Activity Monitor. And the boxes at the bottom should be mostly black with very little red or green at 3.5% CPU usage. Given all the symptoms, I am surprised that there is not some process running amok in the background.
    Good luck!

  • Why are these basic actions so hard?

I'm new to CS6 but not to video editing tools. I'm shocked that some basic controls are either missing or very hard to find. Can anybody tell me whether there's a convenient way to:
Enter a number (e.g. "00;00;04;00") to specify the duration of a clip or set of clips? I can't find a place to do it in the Effect Controls window.
Widen or narrow the timeline display without using the awkward Ctrl-+ keystrokes or manipulating the tiny slider control below the timeline? Perhaps an easy gesture?
Select a very narrow (short) clip when hovering over clip only produces trim cursors? I don't want to expand and compress the timeline just to do this.
    Thank you!

What work process do people follow for creating a film using CS6 that includes animated text? Many other non-linear editors have built-in text and object motion effects but PP apparently doesn't.
I do all complex titles in Ae.
You need to study up on Dynamic Linking.
Premiere Pro / Adobe Dynamic Link

I thought I could just move these titles screens into AE, create the animated intermediary frames in AE, and then copy the new intermediary frames back into PP. After hours of poking around, I'm coming to the sad conclusion that PP title screens can't be imported into AE. Can this possibly be true?
    Yep.
I've got 25+ points in my PP sequence where I'd like to have the text animate. I don't want to re-create all 25 start and end frames again in AE.
Dynamic Linking is the best way.
Unfortunately, you will need to re-create the titles.

  • Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.

You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down.

  • Why is my 27" IMac so hot on the upper area of the monitor?

Why is my 27-inch desktop iMac 10.6.8 OS Snow Leopard OS running so hot while in use?
    My Hardware Overview:
Model Name: 27-inch Desktop iMac, Model Identifier: iMac11,3
Processor Name: Intel Core i3, Processor Speed: 3.2 GHzNumber Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2  L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB   L3 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB  Processor Interconnect Speed: 5.86

How hot is hot? For example is it that hot you can fry an egg or it literally burns your skin? If it's neither of those it's safe to assume the temperature you're sensing is actually warm rather than hot. The area you're referring to is where the hard drive is positioned. This can and sometimes does get warm in normal operation.
If it truly was getting hot to the point where you're in danger of burning your fingers the Mac would switch itself off which is not something you're describing.

Why has my camera stopped working on Skype on my macbook air after running a software update to 10.8.5?

    See this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5306216?tstart=0
    FIX:
    1. You need Time Machine
    2. Go to folder /Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL/
    3. Copy AppleCamera.plugin to good place (usb memory stick is the best place).
    4. Go to Time machine in date that skype work fine.
    5. Change AppleCamera.plugin with file from Time Machine
    6. Restart system, Now skype need to work with camera.
    If that doesnt pass,
Suggest looking here, much success has been found:

I can't import my movies to work on them. They are coming from a external hard drive, not directly from the camera, its type mpeg-2 (.mts)
    What can I do ?

    1. Is your external HD connected by firewire?
    2. mpeg2 is the final compressed delivery format of a DVD, not intended for editing, and iMovie cannot handle such files, so you need to convert them first:
    For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
