Why are my files getting messed up?

I have a strange thing happening in my MacBook Pro.  I have quite a few folders organized into groups of other folders.  One such folder would contains several other folders with information I'm currently using.  When I'm temporarily finished with the information in one of these folders, I move it out of the way (folder level) into another set of folders in case I want it later.  For some reason, every once in a while, the moved folder ends up with my information removed and other stuff inserted.  This new stuff has photo's that are not mine and files with names like combo, combo.css, combo.js, hanging files.  The data looks like machine information, and memos that can't be opened.  Fortunately I do back up my system regularly and can retrieve majority of the stuff.  This does not happen all the time.  I've done this routine for years and this is a new one for me.
Can anyone tell me what is happening and how to stop it?

You did not mention that the logic board was replaced.  It may be that the liquid damage affected the logic board and the symptoms are now appearing.  I suggest a trip to the Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.
Ciao.

  • Why are my files no longer downloading?

After converting a PDF into a word document; when I try to download the file nothing happens. So I click on the files tab and select the document I want to download and I get a messsage saying files not found. Why are my files no longer downloading?

What do you have your options set as in a Finder window?
Mine are set as "none" and show up alphabetically.
P.S. That is assuming you are referring to a Finder window? If not, please be a bit more specific.

  • Why do music files get corrupted in iTunes?

Why do music files get corrupted in iTunes? All kinds of files;( mp3, mp4, aac, etc., either purchased from iTunes, Store, downloaded from online, or uploaded from an audio disc) SUDDENLY GET CORRUPTED AND STOP PLAYING! Even if I delete the file from my iTunes and then re-open it from the source, it appears to be corrupted. My system has been thoroughly scanned and does not have and never has hAd, a virus. Music files should not have a shelf life. They're just non-living pieces of information. So why should they suddenly go bad? It is unacceptable that over the past year I have had to delete many files from my iTunes library and find some other source for the same song. It has been an exhausting headache and an exasperating waste of my time.

this is not necessarily the case, I had an itunes library go bad on me. I noticed the corrupt files on my ipod, they were either skipping real bad or sounded like there was some crazy modulation filter applie. Anyways, i went to iTunes and the files were bad there, so I played them in WMP, also bad, so obviously it was a file issue, BUT, what was the source of the corruption.......also, this happened ONLY to mp3s, no other audio file.......so i had backups and copied the bad files from a dvd and played them in WMP, files were good, then i import them to iTunes, and the files are crap again, so I tried just adding to library, still bad. So the file was fine before, once iTunes touched it, the file went bad, I **** you not. So I uninstalled iTunes from my PC, downloaded the newest version and reinstalled, same problems, so i continued trying with a different version, and making sure all registry entries were cleared before installing etc. NOTHING, so in the end i had to start using Winamp and all those files have not since caused me problems. So NO, it does not have to be hard drive issues, assess your own situation and you should be able to figure out if it is your HDD. My problem seemed to be iTunes library corrupting my metadata. However, I could never get it to work. I am glad to say I have since abandoned my PC and bought a new iMac on which i once again happily running iTunes with all the same audio files as before

  • Disc Burner. Why are some files not readable or writeable?

    Hello,
I am trying to backup my friends computer files on a beige G3 (233 MHz). I am burning about 6 DVDs of AIF music files. Most of the files are about 30 - 40 Megs in size. Often I receive error messages on particular files that read:
"The operation cannot be completed because some data cannot be read or written.
    (Error code - 36)"
Followed by the choices: "Stop" or "Continue".
I have a bad feeling that my startup disk is too small but I am not sure.
Most of the files work fine. However some of the files cause disc burner to not be able to use them in the disc image before I burn. Why would this be?
    Here are the specifications:
Computer: beige G3 with two hard drives (one SCSI and one ATA hard drive) and a Pioneer DVR-110D DVD writer which is Apple supported (Apple system profiler indicates Apple supported on this DVD writer). My blank DVD disks are Sony Vermatim DVD-R (1 - 16x speed support). Although I think my beige G3 only writes them at about 2 or 4x.
I am using OS 10.1.5. My startup disk which has OS 10.1.5 in it is a 4 GIG SCSI disk. Is this big enough for a startup disk (for creating 4.5 GIG DVDs)? My files are on the second hard drive which is a 40 GIG ATA disk.
I have a bad feeling that my OSX startup drive is too small for disk burning - it is only 4 GIGs in total and OSX Disc burner (Disc copy) is first making a disk image on my startup volume before it burns it. Perhaps that disk image is too large for the startup volume. Is there any way I could ask OSX to put this disk image on the second larger hard drive instead (not the startup drive?).
Here is my process (I hope I am doing this right - I am new at this):
    1. I first insert a blank DVD-R
    2. A message pops up asking my if I would like to create a blank disc image for this disk (I think this is the typical Disk Copy utility window. I say "yes" and give it a name and choose the "DVD-R or DVD-RAM" option. (I am not sure if there are other important settings to choose here or better settings to use but I guessed the other options that seemed obvious. A blank disk image is created with an icon that looks like a DVD disk.
    3. Then I drag my chosen files to this blank disc image. It takes about 30 minutes to copy over. Thats when I receive the error message that some files couldn't be "read or written". The other files work fine but it would be nice if they all worked.
Why would some files not be readable or writeable?
    4. Then I choose file/burn in the top menu and the DVD is created. This takes another 20 - 30 minutes. At the very end of the process another message pops up saying:
"Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code -28)" Followed by an "OK" button.
However all the files that made it onto the final DVD are fine - its just that its not all of the ones I originally chose in the first step when dragging to create the disk image.
Am I doing this the right way?
Why are some files not "readable or writeable" as it indicates in the error message?
Is my 4 GIG startup disk too small for this? or are the music files possibly corrupt? or could there be some other possible problem?
    Thanks

To follow up, I have some good news. After following your advice Kappy, it now works very well Thanks! Instead of using the 4 GIG volume for the OS, I am now using an 8 GIG partition on an 80 GIG drive. So now the OS has some room to operate. No disk errors occured on my first DVD
Now there was one problem. The second DVD burned gave me an error. I am not sure why but I am going to guess that because I had to installed the OS onto an 8 GIG partition maybe the OS needs to be rebooted in between disk burns because although 8 GIGs is certainly greater than the 4 GIGs I gave it last time, it still isn't a lot of space - maybe just enough to do one DVD at a time. Thats only a guess. So I rebooted to see if that clears the system out ready for the next DVD and I am trying to burn the second DVD again. If I remember I will report back. In any case, yes, this seems to be working. I hope this second DVD burns well too.
    Thanks Kappy

X423424X's question is pertinent too: you usually need to repair permissions after some major upgrade or update, not on a regular basis. Is there a particular reason why you'd often try to repair permissions? Here's more on the subject.
Repairing permissions after an update or upgrade is harmless, but I would question the need to do it even there. The Apple update itself should set the correct Permissions. I still do this, really as a hangover from Tiger days -- not certain it was really ever needed there either -- and because it's a habit that's hard to kick, but it's never found anything to repair...but for one buggy exception, which was the 10.5.8 Combo update. Running it once and then repairing Permissions created a real error. It was discovered the Combo needed to be run twice back to back and then Permissions repair. In fact, one would have been better off not running Permissions for that update to begin with. There it wasn't harnless.

BTW, even Flash updates, which always used to set incorrect Permissions, are coming in clean these days.

Why are my emails getting caught in my outbox and not sending?

This started happening to me immediately after updating to 10.9.3. None of the suggestions that I could find through Google (orotherwise) helped at all. Mail.app simply does not try to empty the outbox. I would call AppleCare, but they'll just tell me that the software is fine and that it's unreasonable for me to expect to be able to send email.
Apple support is a dim shadow of it's former self, but it correctly reflects teh state of Apple development. I picked a horrible time to switch to Mac.

  • Why did my file get huge?

I'm working on a long document in CS5.5 that's mostly text; there are only 4 linked BW images in ~140 pages. I needed to export it for someone who is working in CS4, so following the instructions, I updated to 7.5.2, then exported the IDML. I then saved the document and the file size grew from about 19MB to 103MB.
What's more, the exported IDML file is only 535KB. The raw text file that I placed, which makes up 98% of the InDesign document is 1.1 MB.
Now here's something I find really interesting... I opened the IDML file in CS5.5 and saved the results (which seem to be identical to the original ID document) and it weighs in at only 9MB.
    Any thoughts? (Besides WTF?)
    Thanks.
    [Mac OS X 10.7.3]

It worked for me, too, and the file that had grown to 1,766,796 KB went back down to a very reasonable 35,872 KB.
The only (very slight) problem I encountered is that when I re-opened the file, the page numbering had shifted so that page 1 was page 302 (previously the last page in my file), so I had to adjust that.
Everything else seems fine, and I am very grateful.
The only thing I can find for why this happens is that "somehow" the file gets corrupted and that doing the IDML export fixes it.

  • Why are some files missing from import screen?

I'm trying to import some files into LR, but the import screen isn't showing all of the files that are in the folder I've selected.
I've notice this only when there are multiple files with the same base filename.  For example, when the folder contains the following files, LR will show all of them in the import screen:
    file.mp4
    file1.jpg
    file2.jpg
However, "file1.jpg" will not be shown in the import screen when the folder contains the following files:
    file1.mp4
    file1.jpg
    file2.jpg
I've been unable to find an LR preference that covers this.  Have I overlooked it?
    Thanks!

Here's a guess ... emphasis on the word "guess" ... when you have file1.mp4 and file1.jpg, the .jpg is considered a "sidecar" and won't be imported ... unless ... you select the option in Preference (general tab) that says "Treat JPG files next to raw files as separate photos" ... yes, I know the option says "raw" and your file is an "mp4", but it takes you less than a minute to give ita try

  • Why are my permissions totally messed up?

I have been having problems with permissions since upgrading to 10.4.4.
Got worse after installing Macromedia Studio 8
I can't overwrite files that I've created when I do a "save as." I've had access denied over the lan for overwriting files. I even logged in as root and tried to overwrite a file on the LAN and got permission denied. (when I check permissions on my PC, I have them).
Then finally, I can go to the file, get info, and I have read/write permissions as a user, but my "group" is read only. once I change that, I can overwrite. Once. Then I have to go back and give my group permission again
Dual 2.7 GHz PowePC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Problem exacerbated after installing Macromedia Studio 8

uhh - I have something similar.
Updated not long ago - when 10.4.4 first came out. Everything has been great - until yesterday.
First Photoshop won't launch. So I run DiscUtility, Repair permissions, do a Safe Boot, run DiscWarrior. Repair Premissions again. Force prebind with Terminal.
Nothing from Photoshop CS2. Uninstall - reinstall - uninstall -reinstall. I keep getting errors on the installation. ImageReady will launch and seems to be functional.
(I also installed PS 7 to work with in the meantime.)
So now I want to try Cocktail and MacJanitor - Cocktail refuses my password, saying I have entered an invalid username or password. MacJanitor quits the moment I hit return after entering my password.
I now think that I'll clone off to an external and do a complete reinstall - but CCC doesn't want to accept my password either !
I then create a new user - nope, same issues as ˆ
I really don't get it at all - so can someone else suggest something else to try that I/we may have overlooked ?

  • Zeroed out my drive -- why are 2 files still there?

I set my computer to zero out my drive over 7 passes last night. I just checked it and it appears that it worked -- it states that only 73.3 MB of the drive are currently being used by 2 files. What are these 2 files and how can they be there if everything on the drive has been erased?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Launch Terminal (in Applications/Utilities). type the following command (replacing "yourdrivename" with your drive's name - if you have spaces, you will have to escape them with a backslash "\" like: your\ drive\ name ):
    ls -al /Volumes/yourdrivename
You will see that there are two files (. and ..) that are required by Unix for every directory (folder). "." is the current folder, ".." is the next-higher-up folder in the tree.
    Required by Unix.

  • HT203088 Why are CR2 files not supported?  How do I get them to open??

I don't know if this should go in Aperture or not.  I have some photos that I took with a Canon 5D Mark III that are .CR2 and I CAN NOT get them to open in Camera Raw.  I have updated all of my software with the exception of the adobe products.  How do I get the .CR2 files to open???

    Kbrian
According to Apple the Canon 5D Mark III is supported in Aperture 3 or later
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
I am not a Canon user - but perhaps this model also allows you to save a small  RAW file - perhaps called sRAW?
This may not be supported by Apple
Be aware, that although the file has a CR2 file suffix, every RAW file is unique to the model that generates it and has to be individually supported by Apple via a system level update
    Hope this helps

  • Why are these files showing? and how do i get rid/hide them?

can anyone tell me a fix to hide these greyed/faded out files and folders? they are littered around EVERYWHERE on my mac, even in my external hard drive. Also, why is there a file called .DS_Store on my desktop? i've tried putting it in the trash and emptying it but it just appears again! thanks in advance.

    1. Open the AppleScript Editor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    tell application "Finder" to quit
if (do shell script "defaults read com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles") is "1" then
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0"
    else
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1"
    end if
    delay 2
    tell application "Finder" to run
If you change your mind later, run the script again.
    2. To store the metadata associated with items on the desktop.
