Why are my fonts changing while I type in cs5?

I just got a new PC and installed AI CS5.  Been using it for a long time with no issues on previous PC.  Now when I attempt to edit text, while I type the font mysteriously changes to Chinese characters or some odd, widely spaced serif font.  Type menu won't change it.  I'm baffled, and it's made AI nearly unusable for my needs.  While typing, a strange gray bar appears below the characters, which is a sign that this problem is starting.  Restarting the application fixes it for a few minutes, but not every time, and it reverts back to the same problem shortly after.
I'm probably missing some helpful details, so please ask for clarification.  Any help would be invaluable.
Thanks.

Hi Mylenium,
you are completely correct. I think the issue was due to some strange document settings carried over from CS3. I ended up trashing those files and pasting into fresh CS5 documents, which corrected the issue. However I can't reproduce the issue now
Thanks for your help though, and I appologise for the lack of documentation.
Cheers,
Cheyenne

  • Why are my fonts in different groups in Illustrator CS5?

I am running Illustrator CS5 on a Laptop PC. I am constantly installing new fonts to work on customer projects...
I have noticed that sometimes the fonts appear in the font list in alphabetical order, and sometimes they appear either towards the top or bottom (not in order), or they are in a completely separate grouping at the bottom of the list. Is there any fix for this? I'd prefer that they all be in Alphabetical order if possible...
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Scott. F.

Check the font prefs and the various text-cnetric panels' options. this happenes when you choose to group by English name, but the font is encoded for a different region/ uses a different set of characters.

Why are my fonts are not installing in ox6 it shows as exec?

Are you referring to an icon that looks like a monitor and has the word exec in green on it? If so, that's OS X's way of saying "I have no idea what this file is".
I'm guessing you're trying to use an incompete Type 1 PostScript font. Type 1 PostScript fonts are a set. One file is a suitcase containing all of the low res bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts. As an example, here's Adobe Garamond.
    Adobe Garamond
    AGarBol
    AGarBolIta
    AGarIta
    AGarReg
    AGarSem
    AGarSemIta
The first file which I highlighted in green is the font suitcase of bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts.
    1) The files for a Type 1 PostScript font must have both the screen and printer fonts for a given set in order to work. They also must be in the same folder.
    2) The suitcase of bitmap fonts will work alone, but output will be terrible since the system will print the fonts using the 72 dpi screen fonts in the suitcase if the outline portions are missing.
    3) Having only the outline fonts will not work. You can see the fonts, but they will not load. That's not a problem with Font Book, Suitcase or other font manager. None of them, nor the system itself will load outline fonts from a Type 1 PostScript font without the matching suitcase of screen fonts present.

  • Why do Certain fonts change when I convert to PDF from Microsoft word?  They start out 60s chic and end up as a standard font.

Why do some fonts change when converted from Microsoft word to PDF?  It starts out as 60s chic and changes to standard font.

Related to the question, I suspect you have licensed fonts that cannot be embedded. Thus, the PDF is using what it is finding to be an equivalent as well as it can guess. Did you check the font list in the PDF?

. What version of OS X?
    10.6.8 - latest Snow Leopard.
. How are you determining the size of the Vault?
Using Finder: "Size 5.8 MB on disk".
. What exactly did you do that you describe as "I decided to set up a Vault to back up to the Time Machine external hard drive.".  In general, Time Machine should be on a drive dedicated to it (that is, with nothing else on it).
Oops, right: I meant Time Capsule. Time Machine is backing up to the Time Capsule, but I thought I could also use the Time Capsule as an external hard drive as well as a target for Time Machine. So, this is a non-no?
. How many images show up when you select "Photos" from near the top of the Library tab of the Inspector and filter using the Filter Rule "File Status" with the argument "Referenced"?
    1. Thanks for getting me to learn Aperture's "filtering" (Command-F). Cool.
    2. No images. Aha. So, do this mean all the masters are in the iPhoto library?
    But, using Finder:
iPhoto Library: 18.2 GB 8,014 items
Aperture Library.aplibrary: 20.6 GB 7,945 which would be right: I did some deleting after importing from iPhoto
    Aperture Vault: 5.8 MB

If that's the only place you used that unique font, yes.  Convert the textbox to an image file by applying a drop shadow to the font and setting the opacity of the drop shadow to 5%.

  • Reader 10.0 Printing Problem - Font changing while printing

    Dear all,
can anybody help me on my printing problem with Adobe Reader 10.0 ?
While printing a pdf I cannot do anything else, it is not possible to touch the mouse
because when I do this, the font is changing while printing to something like grecian.
Can somebody help me on this ?
Reader 9 did not cause this problem.
    Thanx and best Regards, Travelplan24

I have the same problem, but I didn't realize it could be set off by my working on another task. It is also triggered when the pdf has scientific notation, or a very extreme change in font and font size. E.g., text in boxes, algorithms, etc. seem to trigger the problem.
I have reinstalled my print driver (several times, latest on Sunday), and reinstalled Adobe Reader (now 10.0.1) but the problem remains.
    Printer:
HP Officejet 6500 (E709n Series) wireless, now on USB.
Document properties: Most recent font conversion - yesterday:
    Producer: Distiller 4.0.2 for Mac
    PDF version: 1.3 (Acrobat 4.x)
Fonts: Helvetica-Neue, Type 1, Encoding: ANSI and Roman
The font is not converting into Greek. E.g. "Problem-Solving Process" became "Qspcrfm . Tpnwjoh!Qspdftt"' with the kerning overlapping characters.
The font 'conversion' has happened many, many times on a wide variety of pdf files in the past 6 months. Never had the problem before. I had downloaded new Reader, and purchased the new printer -- I do not know which change created the problem.
I will cease doing anything when I print as a temporary workaround, but that is not a good solution.
I sure hope you can figure out what the bug is. Thanks in advance.

    Some help with this, please?
    Peter

What types of fonts are they? If they're Type 1 PostScript, this may be the problem.
Font Book can read PostScript fonts. But from the sounds of it, you don't have the whole font. Type 1 PostScript fonts are a set. One file is a suitcase containing all of the low res bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts. As an example, here's Adobe Garamond.

    3) Having only the outline fonts will not work. You will get exactly what you are having problems with. You can see the fonts, but Font Book won't load them. That's not a problem with Font Book itself. No font manager will load outline fonts without the matching suitcase of screen fonts present.

  • Why are some fonts blank in my CS5 character panel?

    Hi,
I'm wondering why some fonts arent visible in my character viewer. I am using Illustrator Version15.0.2 on a MacBook Pro running 10.9.1. I have included 2 screen shots below for a visual reference.
    AND
Additionally, I'd like to understand how the fonts in the character viewer menu are organized. I know they are alphabetical, but what are the grey divider lines representing?
Can I deactivate non-english language fonts so that this menu is less conjested with fonts I never use? I've used Illustrator for years and am finally getting around to asking this question. I can't seem to find a straight forward answer regarding which fonts are actually non-english. As a side note, I use Font Explorer X Pro to manage my fonts.
Thanks for any insight into this.

I cross referenced with Photoshop's character menu, and they are showing up there. I included screenshots from Photoshop below. It looks like they are all non-English character fonts. They are not fonts I installed, but one's that are housed in my Library/Fonts folder. I'm not sure if they have always been in there, as they may have been installed with my Mavericks upgrade. They definitly came with either OSX or Mavericks. I will send a few to you if you would still like me to.
    Best,
    Erin

  • Why Are My Fonts and Imported Photos Pixelated in Photoshop?

It is so strange. I worked on a Photoshop document earlier today. I imported a photo and wrote text on it. When I printed it, it came out perfect. Then I started a new document. I imported a photo which is 2400 pixels wide. The document size is only 11 inches wide so the photo should stay nice a sharp. I also wrote text on the document. Both in screen mode and when I print this new document, everything is pixelated and fuzzy, not crisp like my first document. Also, when I type text the font is in SHARP mode so I don't see what the problem is. Please help? Please help me get sharp prints again.
    Thank you,
    David

I have never had this issue before. Whenever I PLACED a document, it was always sharp, no matter what size the document was? Also, why is the font type pixelated? I would be happy to send you the PSD so you can see for yourself.

  • Why are these fonts auto activating?

I've just updated to Tiger 10.4.8. One day later I install CS2 (previously had CS).
I use FontAgent Pro. Now, whenever I open Safari or any CS2 app. (just the app, not an actual document) a bunch of fonts are auto activated which I don't want to be activated, and as far as I know don't need to be activated. They are Devangari MT, Geeza Pro, Gujarati MT, Gurmukhi MT, Hirangino Kaku Gothic Pro, LiHei Pro, STHeiti, Times, and Photoshop also auto activates Osaka.
Can anyone throw any light on this? I've posted in the Adobe forum (as not really sure if it's a mac thing or an adobe thing) but had no answers. Thanks

    Hi Kathydate,
It doesn't matter what manager a person may be using. If any of the Fonts folders have something in them, they will be active. Check these folders for the fonts.
    /System/Library/Fonts/
    /Library/Fonts/
~/Library/Fonts/ (the tilde means your home account)
The Adobe apps have their own folder at:
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/
If there are any fonts in that folder you want to remove, do not remove the folder "Reqrd" or any of the items in it. The Adobe apps need those fonts to operate.
For more details on font locations and which you can remove, see my article, Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther.

  • 'Highlight' Character Style -- Why Does the Font Change?

I want to define a style that mimics a highlight marker.
Choose some text, set the background/fill to yellow.
Highlight filled words, then choose 'Define Style From Selection..."
Then, in the More... selection I deselect every attribute of the character style except for the fill colour. So this should highlight text, but leave every other attribute of the text unchanged -- I think.
But whenever I apply it, the font changes to something I don't recognise -- even though the font is not a part of the character style description.
    What am I doing wrong?
    TIA

You need to make sure the font is embedded in the PDF. This is optional in some sofware.
If it is not embedded, your local font is used. No such local font exists on the iPad.

  • Why are the fonts in the fillable fields changing in reader?

Hello, I created a fillable pdf in acrobat. When I open the pdf in reader on my iPad the fonts in the fillable fields change. It is throwing off the fields and things don't line up correctly. I can't figure out how to correct the problem or why it's happening in the first place. Also, the fields behave differently in preview on my Mac. The fonts are correct but the placement is off. Any help would be awesome! Thanks.

Solved it! I went back into acrobat and locked the appearance of all my text fields. Everything now appears as it should in reader.    Still have no idea why I needed to do that?

  • What do the globe and triangle with exclamation point mean on the URL bar and why do they sometimes change while surfing a page?

I have always about this, as I've seen these more than once along multiple versions of Firefox. I'm well aware that the lock means the site is 'verified' though I don't know exactly what that entails. More recently, I've noticed that many websites either have the lock or else the globe with the markings on it which says that the connection to the site in question is 'unencrypted', but I don't know what that means. Sometimes this will change between pages on the same website. What I find stranger is that sometimes a a single page on one site will go from the lock to the triangle with the exclamation point in it. Now from what I can tell, it means something similar to the globe, as they seem to both state the same basic thing, that the website doesn't supply identity information and the connection isn't encrypted. What I want to know is how and why this happens, and sometimes even while still on the same page. I've encountered this on three different versions of firefox. The 24 esr, 28.0, and version 34. (Not all on one computer, mind. Though I believe it's possible to have multiple instances of Firefox on the same machine as I know someone mentioned being able to do that on another thread and I'd love to know how that's done if anyone can answer it.) These versions of firefox were on 8.1, and two distinct versions of XP from two different machines. Is this an odd glitch, or is something else going on there and if so, how does one fix it? So far it's happened to me twice on my own computer, once on a fiction website, and as of tonight, once on youtube. On the former, the switch happened on a single page, while on Youtube it changed from one page on the search bar to the actual channel of something in question and back again. Closing out the tab and doing a quick clearing of history seemed to work fine on youtube. The fiction website, not so much, though I haven't seen the triangle thing come back again, as everything there seems to be the globe. So far anyway. However it has come up before on various computers in the past that I've used with various firefox versions, as I've said. Can anyone explain what this is and how to fix it if it is indeed a problem?

    ''jscher2000 [[#answer-707094|said]]''
    <blockquote>
The green padlock means your connection is HTTPS (encrypted) and the certificate identifies a particular site operator. Certificate issuers demand special verification for the Extended Validation (EVSSL) certificate that generates a green padlock.
The gray padlock means your connection is HTTPS (encrypted) but the certificate cannot establish the operator of the site one way or another. No special identification is required to get this certificate.
The exclamation point triangle symbols may indicate that the connection is partially encrypted -- some content is the page was sent over an open connection -- or recently it may indicate that the site uses such easily cracked encryption that you should treat it as providing no protection.
And the point of all this is?! Simply this: if your web traffic is ''not encrypted'', it can be read by others. That's why login pages and sites dealing in your personal or sensitive information should always show a padlock in the address bar. If it's not there, be concerned.
If a normally secure site suddenly shows a mixed content icon, try reloading the page (Ctrl+r or to re-request fresh copies of cached files use Ctrl+Shift+r).
    </blockquote>
As it happens, I have tried the refresh thing. It doesn't always work on sites where this sudden changeover occurs. The weird thing is that, again, this happens at random and I've seen it occur over multiple versions of firefox, past and present, so it's not just relegated to just the three main ones I have most recently seen it on.
Now what makes this even stranger is that I have seen a few pages on the fiction website (www.fimfiction.net to be specific) where the grey padlock at the very least shows up on a page, but then suddenly will go to the triangle. Not all of these pages have mixed content or even any content at all beyond simple text. A few have pictures or clickable links, but I usually avoid clicking on the links if I don't know and trust the website. More recently though, the near-entirety of the site has gone to the globe, when before it was the grey padlock. I think the one thing that remains padlocked is its login section. Is it just that the website needs to update its certificates? If so, I can probably just send the site runner a message about that.
I dunno what to do with youtube when it shows up though other than just closing out the tab it's on, clearing my browser history, and reopening the site. It happens rarely with youtube, but it's not unheard of, and it follows along every page on the site once it pops up in one page at all until I shut down that tab. And this is a multiple version thing. These are the two sites where I encounter the issue the most as it's one of only a handful of websites I go to aside from an image gallery which is typically very good about safety. Or as much as it can be, at any rate. The only other site I frequent, www.fanfiction.net (probably the oldest fiction website still active today, and not to be confused with fimfiction) has the grey padlock at all times, aside from when I log into the site. I've used the https: prefix most times when going to a site the first time, and firefox has typically then used that prefix anytime I just enter the general website address in the URL bar, but sometimes it doesn't. Is that partially responsible for why I have seen the padlock switch to the triangle sometimes? I know the link that cor-el posted says that by default from version 16 up, mixed content is blocked by default and I don't think I've ever touched that in the options section of the tools, so what exactly do I do here? Just ignore it, or just keep hitting refresh or what? It doesn't happen all the time, after all, but it does still get annoying.

  • Why are some fonts so think?

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knew why some of the fonts that I am using in FCP(Agency, AvantGarde, Eurostile) look like they have been bolded while staying as they should in other applications like Motion. Both applications are referencing the same files and there are no duplicates of the fonts.
    Any ideas would be appreciated,
    Thanks.

I think this might be a square vs rectangular pixel issue. It has to do with the way FCP displays pixels. Try running a search for Square and rectangular pixels or something like that and see if that helps. Hopefully in the meantime one of the more technically savvy guys might chime in to confirm or poo poo this theory of mine.
