Why are my ide drives known as "sd"-Drive?

Hello,
on Slackware and on a few other distributions, my ide hard drives are known as sda, sdb etc., but I don't have SATA or SCSI drives. I read, this is because the ide drivers are included in the SATA drivers, is this correct?
But why I access on my second hd (sdb)? I want to install there...
What can I do now?
Thanks

I am not sure what you're asking -- to explain why you're seeing your IDE drives show up as /dev/sd? is due to the fact that some recent motherboards will default to using libata in the kernel rather than legacy IDE.  But you're asking what question, exactly?

  • Why are my external drives un-mounting themselves?

Since installing OS Lion, my external G-tech drives have un-mounted themselves at least twice. Anybody got any ideas as to why?
Also, other than powering the external drives down, then re-powering them up again, so iMac can detect them, is there a wat to refresh and detect the drives without power down and up?
    Thanks, Schooner

Doing a SMC reset can sometimes fix mount and dismount issues.

  • Why are there multiple drives in Disk Utility?

When using Disk Utility, why is each disk listed twice and what is the difference between the two? If I'm erasing a CD which one is better to use?

The top entry is the drive. Any partitions (volumes) are listed, indented, below it. To erase a CD-RW, select the drive.

  • Why are DAE TDM driver options missing

When logic 7 (with latest updates) is installed on an Intel mac the DAE and TDM tabs are missing in the sound driver configuration, when installed on a PPC mac the options are there, is this a known issue? I would like to use Logic with my protools HD2

    Hi,
These two options do not woork in the 7.2.3 version of Logic Pro. They simply did not implement them for use with Intel Mac.
I think Logic 8 Pro has the feature implemented, but if you really want to know, go over to the Logic 8 forum, and post a question there.
I am still waiting for the next update of Logic before I jump in.

  • Why are external hard drives and similar continually self-ejecting under Yosemite?

When are Apple going to sort out the problem of external hard disk drives and other similar devices continually self-ejecting under Yosemite. This is a problem I have had ever since I upgraded my 21.5" iMac from Mavericks to Yosemite last year, and I when I upgraded to a 27" iMac last November with Yosemite pre-installed the same issue occurs. I cannot even update my TomTom SatNav because it keeps ejecting while the update is trying to process. I cannot use a WD external drive for backup purposes, and even memory sticks eject. This problem has only started with Yosemite and I do not believe I am the only one experiencing it as it has been aired on the communities website previously. I wish Apple would tackle this problem and issue a Yosemite update that resolves the issue. My present Yosemite version no.is 10.10.3.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Why are no Adobe Drive Volumes available in Mini Bridge?

Mini Bridge is avoiding Adobe Drive Volumes. Why is it like this? It looks like it pro-actively tries to hide them.
One of the few exceptions is in InDesign, when you try to show a linked resource in Mini Bridge. Then it will show the actual folder, but when navigating some folders up, the process associated to Mini Bridge will crash.
Is it possible to activate Adobe Drive Volumes in Mini Bridge? Or will it be possible in a future version?

  • Why are my mounted drives showing up like this?

I just got a a new 27" iMac and I imported my back up from Time Machine and main drive is on there twice. I have a screen shot of it but I think I post a pic here so here is a link to it on my Mobile Me gallery. http://gallery.me.com/kjsimpson/100053/Drives
Is it possible to re name them I.E. get rid of (2), only show the main drive once, etc.

It's really not being shown twice. "Home iMac (2)" is the overall Mac. If you click on it in the sidebar, it should show you all volumes currently mounted over to the right. "Macintosh HD" is one of those volumes, the internal drive.
If you don't want to show the overall Mac as a "device," go to Finder preferences Sidebar tab, and uncheck Computer.
I'm not sure why there is a "(2)" in the name, but you can get rid if it in System Preferences Sharing tab. If the "(2)" appears in the +Computer Name+, remove it there. The Finder sidebar should change to reflect that change.

  • Why are my DVD drives opening on boot up?

For several days now, whenever I start my Mac Pro, early in the boot process both of my DVD drives open their trays. After some period of time goes by after the boot process is complete, they'll both go retract, but something is causing this and if anyone has any ideas as to what that is, please let me know. I'm having a mouse problem and these both started at about the same time, but I'm unaware of what if anything I did to cause it...
    Thanks in advance.
    Rock

    Hi Rocky,
To be honest i have no idea what can cause that but here's what came to mind for me...
    1. Check with software update if your Mac Pro has the latest software and firmware.
    2. Go to system preferences > Startup Disk, select the correct startup disk by clicking it (just to make sure). The DVD drive could be opening 'asking' for a boot disc if it can not find the hard drive with a valid OS on it in the first few seconds. This is just a theory, not sure if it's accurate
    3. Go to Applications > Utilities and start Disk utility. Select your startup drive and click Repair Permissions. When done restart the Mac. Even if this doesn't fix the issue, it's good to run once in a while.

  • Why are 2 hard drives are one my desk top

That is what you see with a single hard drive containing a single partition (Drive on top, partition below, ignore the Superdrive it's the DVD)
    What do you see?

  • I have 100's of CDs that I have downloaded to my itunes library and they are in the library playable but they do not show up in the C drive under the iTunes Music folder under users.  Why are they in the libary and not in the itunes music folder. Win 7 OS

I have 100's of CDs that I have downloaded to my itunes library and they are in the library playable but they do not show up in the C drive under the iTunes Music folder under users.  Why are they in the libary and not in the itunes music folder. Win 7 OS.  When I look in the library under the get info screen it says they are in the folder itunes music, under the c: drive but when I actually go to that folder to look for them they are not there....HELP!

    Hello RumDog,
I think this article will help you find the media in your library.
Where are my iTunes files located?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1391
Discovering and changing the iTunes Media folder location
Note: You would usually only change the iTunes Media folder location to share music between accounts on the same computer. See this article for specific steps on how to accomplish this. Also, see this article if you want to know how to move your music to a new computer.
Mac OS X: Click the iTunes menu and choose Preferences.
Windows: Click the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
Click the Advanced pane. iTunes displays the location of your iTunes Media folder.
    You can then:
Note where your media folder is, such as for backing up your media.
Use the Reset button to reset it's location to the default (which is the iTunes folder).
Click the Change button to select a folder for a new location. Once you change this location:
If you make a new or alternate iTunes library, the new location will be used by that library.
Existing files will not be moved unless you choose File > Library > Organize library and choose the option to "Consolidate files."

  • How can I disable the automatic hiding of known file attachments, and why are always about 10 internet pages where I have to download something if i use firefo

How can I disable the automatic hiding of known file attachments, and why are always about 10 internet pages where I have to download something when I use mozila firefox?
    Windows Computer

    1) If you are talking about the file names on the computer, there is a
setting to turn off known file types. Open your file browser. Then
just under the location bar, press '''Tools,''' then '''Folder Options.'''
A new window will open. Select '''View.''' Look for
'''Hide Extensions For Known File Types.'''
    2) Never NEVER '''NEVER''' download anything unless you know what
it is. If a web site claims it needs to download something, what is it?
It could be something like the flash player, '''or a virus ! !'''

You can transfer photos outside of iTunes. I do it all the time. THat said, i have a 50/50 success rate with them. I'd avoid sandisk and kingston, their bundled software triggers the 'too much power' warning.
I've had mixed luck with lexar, some work, some don't.
I did have good luck with an older 4 gig geek squad one.
Look for drives without software on them, without bright LED lights and I haven't gotten any larger than 4 gig to work, but that may just be me.
For a less troublesome way? h onestly, I use a SD card that I've formatted with the DCIM folder. I've never had one of them trigger the 'too much power' warning. Just make sure they're not SDXC. those don't work.

  • Can't get IDE drive to work with K8N NEO2

I built my computer two months ago.  The only hard drive I installed was a Samsung 160GB SATA.  The Windows XP installation was flawless and the system has worked perfectly ever since.
This past week I decided to install my old Western Digital IDE hard drive.  I connected it to PATA port 1 on the motherboard.  It's jumpered as a Primary device and connected to the primary port on the IDE cable.
The problem is that when I boot the computer with the IDE drive connected it will hang on the gray Platinum screen for around 5 minutes.  If I hit DEL and enter BIOS after 5 minutes I can see that the drive is detected and the boot order already was set for the SATA drive first and the IDE drive second.  Then if I reboot it hangs on the Platinum screen again for five minutes.  When it finally clears that I get messages indicating that no boot device is available.  If I shut down, disconnect the IDE drive, and reboot with only the SATA drive connected it boots flawlessly.
I checked my device manager and see that the nvidia nforce3 250 Parallel ATA controller and Serial ATA controller drivers are installed.
Is there anything else I can check or do to get the computer to boot with an IDE drive connected?
    Thanks!

WD drives are special compared to others .
If they are alone on the ide channel they shall not be jumpered as master .
This is only when it is sharing the channel with another ide/atapi device .
Instead the jumper shall be removed , they call it single drive jumpering (SD).
And the reason why bios get hung is :
It finds a master jumpered drive , and since it does it will try to detect the slave
    but there isn't one .

  • Why are my aliases larger than 4k ?

I just set up a whole lot of image files in a special alias folder. I expected each alias to be 4k in size. About 10% are 4k, the rest are between 44k and 56k.
The originals are all Photoshop JPEGs, created in Photoshop 2 and Photoshop 7.
I thought an alias was just a file pointer. Why are some of them so large? Is there any way to make them smaller? They are taking up way too much space on my USB thumb drive.
    iMac G5 17" 1.5Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Ok Niel - so far, so good. I have done what you suggested, and yes I now have a folder of 4k aliases - so thank you for that idea.
The one small problem is that there is no icon of the image that the alias represents, at least not until I click on the alias name in column view, when it shows up nicely. But in list view, icon view, or unselected in column view, I can't see what it is. Is there any way around this? I have tried using Get Info to paste the image into the icon field, but it won't let me do it, and I suspect that would increase the size to more than 4k. What I want is the old OS 9 system that would create a 4k alias AND give me a tiny image of the file as well.
If I really can't do it, then I will have to live with using the filename alone, but at least I have 4k aliases.

  • Reference Assemblies Dialog in VS2013 - why are hidden COM type libraries included?

Why are COM type libraries that have the hidden attribute displayed in Visual Studio when you add a COM type reference to a .Net project? These hidden type libraries are not displayed in VBA, and the hidden attribute is supposed to prevent their display
in UI tools. Is this dialog ignoring that flag and if so why?  I've created several type libraries that I do not wish to have displayed in this dialog.  Is there another way to accomplish this?
As an example, look at the Accessibility type library.  The flags for the type library include LIBFLAG_FHIDDEN (4), yet it is still displayed.
    Thanks.

    Hi simdoc,
Actually this forum is to discuss:
Visual Studio WPF/SL Designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System, and Visual Studio Editor.
    >>Why are COM type libraries that have the hidden attribute displayed in Visual Studio when you add a COM type reference to a .Net project?
To make this issue clearly, could you share us a screen shot about the real results in your side about the VBA and VS references dialog?
Actually I’m not very sure that whether it is the correct forum for this issue since this forum is to discuss the VS IDE, but to really repro this issue, could you share us a simple COM library or a sample? So we could repro this issue in our side. Please
also tell us the real VS version and windows Environment, you could share us a sample with one drive. I will test it in my side using the same Environment as yours, of course, please also share us a screen shot about the real result.
    >> These hidden type libraries are not displayed in VBA,
Not the VBA expert, maybe just the VBA has this limitation:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/gg278797(v=office.15).aspx
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1070863/hidden-features-of-vba
To know that why it is the VBA feature, maybe you could get more information from the VBA forum:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=isvvba
Of course, if you could share me a simple sample, I will repro it in my side usint the same VS IDE as yours.
If there's any concern, please feel free to let me know.
    Sincerely,
    Jack
