Why are names in iMessages on mac highlighted in red

Why are the contact names highlighted in RED on my mac iMessage

The names on iMessage are highlighted in red because that phone number is not registered with iMessage. Either they don't have an iPhone, or they haven't set up iMessage.

My 5+ year old keyboard has the F13 F14 F15 keys sitting all by their lonesome above the help, home, page up block of keys, and I set them to do the three Expose functions, so the system will use them (at least if you have the right hack). All the F keys used to be handier though, back in the OS 9 days, when I assigned them to do all sort of things.

Those are calls you missed.

Why are there empty imessages in my inbox with just the name but no message?

There is just a name. For example, John Smith. But when I click it its empty, there are no messages. Does it mean that they tried to text me but it didn't go through?

How to change "jabber"name from iMessage on Mac?

I am using only 2 account . One Gmail Account Id and other is Apple ID . I am not using any Jabber ID.
Still My iMessage is showing a Jabber name in left Pane downside.
My description of Apple Id is Gaurav Dubey and for Gmail ID is Google . Still Not able to change the name . Any Help would be appericated

Hi,
In the Messages app you can use your Apple Id with the iMessages account
You can remove the Apple ID from the set up but you cannot actually delete the iMessage account.
The same is true of the Bonjour account (it can be Enabled or not but not deleted)
You can also Add accounts using the Plus icon below the list.
This now list a generic "AIM" line used for Apple IDs that are also Valid AIM Screen Names as well as names registered at AIM.
Then at the bottom is the Yahoo option.
In between are the Jabber options of which Googletalk is one.
So at this point if you have added a Google ID you will list in the Account preferences:-
iMessages
Bonjour
Google
The Google one will have a description field.
This is the account ID by default.
Howerver as it is the only Jabber account the Window Menu is likely to list it as "Jabber" and this is also likely to appear at the bottom left of the Main Messages window and in the text field when chatting to Buddies.
Changing this Description (deleting it) defaults to the ID itself.
Although in some places it automatically shows as Google Talk
In iChat 3 though 5 if you had one AIM account and one Jabber Account logged in and had not changed the default Description then the Window Menu would list "AIM" Buddy List and "Jabber" Buddy List even if it was Google.
As I have had descriptions for some time it appears the app is remembering some of these for accounts where I delete the Description and then log the account in.
I am sure that is a fresh set up with less accounts my Google one would get listed as Jabber in some places.

Why are my sent iMessages coming up under my email?

So, anytime I send a message to another iMessage user, they're saying it comes up under my email and not my name saved in their phone. Any idea why? and how could I change that back?

On the Mac open Messages > Preferences> Accounts > iMessages account and change the Start Conversation From drop down.
On the iPhone > Settings > Messages > Send and Receive and change the ID is question.

Why are some messages pushing to mac and not phone?

I am very frustrated, as, I have had occational times where a text bypasses my phone and goes to my macbook. My wife will use the laptop frequently and it happens sometimes when she is on the computer.   It will somtimes send a text the computer even if somone is not using it, though. How do I get the system to send the message to both devices, or, to simply stop all texts from going to the computer? thx

Log out of iMessage on your Mac, and the messages will be forced to only go to your phone.   If your phone has no signal at time the message was sent to you, that could explain why Mac is getting but not your phone.
I'd first try to logout of iMessage on both devices, then reactivate first on your phone, then your Mac.   See if problem fixes itself.

Thanks, that's what I feared. They assume POP3 users are willing to make a masive attempt to change their
public email address. Fortunately my secondary account, Yahoo, provided IMAP when IOS provided a custom setup for it, and I found I was able to select it as an OS-X mail account too.
As for why Notes weren't updating, I had not realized Notes had suddenly gained an account selector in both Mac and IOS and might be in various places. I was testing by changing existing notes resident on my Mac or USB iTunes synced from there. It works if I move them to the iCloud account and then change them.
I realize now there was an offer at some point in iCloud setup to merge or move some existing things, but I wasn't doing that that day, and I didn't get anouther offer when I enabled iCloud for Notes and Mail!
It might also help to go to setup->Mail... and set Fetch New Data to push, which should propagate the changes faster.

FireFox can't open lots of files it isn't suposed to. DMG is opened by the Mac osx as a virtual volume file you just drag the FireFox icon to where you want it installed. Check your desktop for a FireFox volume... like a drive. Double click the DMG file if it is not there. This is how Mac works it has nothing to do with FireFox, many apps install this way!

Are you using Google Bookmarks rather than the built in Firefox bookmarks?
Google changed the login URL for Google accounts and the Google Toolbar addon needs to be fixed by Google to correct the URL it is trying to log in to.

Why are certain websites causing my mac to crash?

I have recently just purchased my first mac and on the whole am very happy with it. However when browsing the internet certain web pages cause my mac to become unresponsive. All my software is up to date. The problem occurs when i'm using safari and so far it's just 4OD (channel4.com) and myspace that have caused this problem. The mouse either freezes completely or turns into the spinning colour wheel and the keyboard shortcut for force quit does not work. I cannot use the dashboard as it doesn't appear even if I can move the mouse over to its area and the time in the top right corner of the screen stops too. All i can do is hold down the power key and then reboot the whole thing. Any ideas as to what might be causing this? Also I looked at the crash reports to see what they said and there aren't even any there!

Why are the contacts on my MAC not shown in the icloud contacts?

I have some 100 + contacts on my Mac Book Pro application and am 'connected' to icloud but I do not see any of the contacts? equally the Calendar application in icloud does not show all my clendars that I hve on the Mac Book Pro.

Open System Preferences. Then access the iCloud tab. Make sure you are signed in with the correct account and have Contacts and Calendars checked.

Why are sparsebundles used when remote Macs backup to my external drive?

At one time I was moving my external G-Drive from my iMac to Macbook so that both computers could use Time Machine to backup. Now I figured out that my MacBook can "see" the drive when it's connected to my iMac and backup to it. The strange thing is, now the Macbook saves its data as a sparsebundle, instead of creating a folder with the various backups like it once did. Is this a good thing? Will it no longer create multiple backups for each week? What if I needed a file in the backup from two weeks ago?

When the drive is connected directly, the "Star Wars" display won't see a sparse bundle. To view the backups in such a case, you'll have to manually mount the sparse bundle (by double-clicking it via the Finder), and use the +*Browse . . .+* option, per #17 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
The way you were backing-up, Time Machine put the backups for both Macs in the Backups.backupdb folder. To view those backups, you'll have to connect the drive directly.
Note that when Time Machine runs out of room for new backups of the MacBook, it won't delete the oldest backups of it from the Backups.backupdb folder. So at some point you'll need to delete the old backups from that set manually. See #12 in the FAQ.

Why are contacts created on my Mac not syncing to other devices?

I have created contacts in address book on my Macbook Pro and they do not show up on my iPhone or iPad. I have iCloud (contacts) turned on on all three. OSX ver. 10.7.5

You're welcome. I'm not sure how this happens, but it does from time to time. When you first enable contacts syncing with iCloud on a Mac, it's supposed to upload your On My Mac contacts to iCloud and delete the On My Mac account, but in some cases it doesn't work properly and you're left with some "stranded" contacts and the potential to add new contacts to an account that doesn't sync with iCloud.
