Why are pages and articles kept for new tab when privacy settings are on?

History and Tracking is set to not save, and clear upon shut-down. However, when I restart if I open a new tab, previous pages (ie. MSN and any articles I read) show up on New Tab page as options. I like to keep browser history so that when I return to a page my "place" is kept. This doesn't happen in private browsing mode

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

  • Why isn't there an option for new tabs to open to your homepage?

This was an option in previous versions of Firefox. What sense does it make to remove functionality?
I don't want to have to middle click my home button, and it's absolutely ridiculous to have to install an extra addon to restore basic features that were included in versions that came out 5 years ago.
    What's the deal?

Here is the newest iteration of an addon that "fixes" this missing feature-
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/my-homepage/
Of course, just like all the others before it, it will eventually break the functionality of itself or another addon in some way or form and we will once again have to find a replacement that restores this very basic feature which other browsers have implemented but Firefox has taken away.
I never gave Chrome or any other browser the time of day because I never needed to, but since Mozilla devs are removing basic features that people want and continually refusing to re-implement them (due to stubbornness or stupidity, 7 years in the making) it's beginning to sound like a better alternative every second.

  • How do I get FF to focus on a new tab? I right-click and choose "Open in New Tab" and the Tab appears in the Tab bar but I cannot access or see the new page.

I open FF ver.10. My Home page is Google Search. I use a Bookmark and open, say, Hulu.com. I select a link by right-clicking and choose "Open in New Tab" The little tab in the tab bar opens but I am still viewing the Hulu.com main page and cannot view the new tab.
This happens even if I use middle-click to open a new tab. It happens with all links on any website I visit.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • For some reason every time i try to open a new tab the only way i can open one is by right clicking a link and clicking open in new tab, does anyone know why this is and how i can fix it?

i've tried CTRL + T, clicking the + sign in the tab bar, and going to file + new tab. nothing has worked

The Ask Toolbar is causing that in the Firefox 3.6.13+ versions. Evidently something in that extension isn't compatible with a Firefox security fix. Disable that extension or un-install it.

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
*do not clear the Cache because Firefox will disable the disk cache in such a case
*do not clear the Browsing History
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Clear+Recent+History
    See also:
The thumbnails on the about:newtab page are generated from the cache, so if the page is not in the cache or otherwise can't or won't (secure pages) be rendered as a PNG image then you will get an empty box.
*Do not use Clear Recent History to clear data like the cache and the history when you close Firefox
If there is no history then you get an about:newtab page with empty boxes (no URLs).

  • Anyone know why, firefox does not remember password for a site when you remove password from the view password site? I removed a pasword in the view password window and now it not asking me to remember and also it is not remembering the password when I go

Anyone know why, firefox does not remember password for a site when you remove password from the view password site? I removed a password for a site that was not remembering the correct password for the "view password" window and now it does not guess the password and does not remember the password for that site. All other sites are being remembered.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== After I deleted the password from the view password window.

The saved password feature worked well, but the site I had saved the password for required that I change the password. I have found no way to update the password in Firefox. After I deleted the saved password, Firefox did not ask if I wanted the new password saved. When this happened before, I removed and re-installed Firefox, and then it worked. I hope there is another way to update a password.

  • I want the cursor to be in the address bar when creating a new window; it works for new tabs and in a new private window, but not in safe mode.

I have tried following the advice offered in the few different threads I have found on this but nothing fixes it. I want the cursor to be in the address bar when I open a new window and/or when firefox opens without restoring a previous session. I fixed the issue for new tabs via about:config but this doesn't work for new windows. I tried safe mode and the problem persists. In new private windows the cursor is in the address bar.

The search box in about:home steals the cursor. Changing your home page to something else will cause the cursor to start in the address bar for new windows.

  • When I open a new tab, I have to move to the other side of the page to click "home". Can I set the same "home" default for new tabs?

My home page opens in the initial FireFox window, but new tabs open with a blank page. To get to my default page I have to click "home", but now it's way over on the other side of the page.
Can I set a default for new tabs?

right click on the control bar and choose "adapt" (or something like that). A window will pop up. Ignore that window and move the home button to the place you want it ''on the control bar''

  • The mall grid button in the upper-right corner of the page that toggles the images on and off in a new tab is missing how do I get it back?

I had a problem with some malware/adware by the time I got it removed it had altered much of Firefox.
I have managed to correct everything apart from the thumb nails of frequently used sites on a new tab. I know there should be a 3 x 3 grid in the top right corner but it doesn't show. How do I get it back, please?

You can reset the <b>browser.newtab.url</b> via the right-click context menu to the default value (about:newtab) to get the new tab page with the thumbnails.

  • Why does add-ons Manager create a new tab every time I go to home page?

When I start Firefox my home page tab shows up along with an add-ons Manager tab and a plus sign for new tab. Every time I go to a web site and then return to my home page ANOTHER add-ons Manager tab shows up. This apparently will go on forever. I have had as many as 20 add-ons Manager tabs showing. The only way to eliminate them is to stop Firefox and then restart. Then it starts all over again. What is causing this?
I'm running the latest version of Firefox and Windows 8.1 on a Dell Inspiron with 8G's of memory and a 1T hard drive.
    Please help.

Can you post back here a screenshot from this issue?

  • Why does right clinking on link and selecting open in new tab does not work?

Why does right clinking on link and selecting open in new tab does not work?
It opens up a blank page. The only way to make the link work is to click on the navigation bar in the new tab and press enter to reload the link.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?<br/> ''A troubleshooting mode.''<br />
1.You can open the Firefox 4.0 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut. <br />
    2. Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut to open it again.''
If not, see this: <br />

  • Why can`t I open a new tab when I press + on a tab track, which is for opening new tabs?

it`s not working. new tabs open only when I click on a link. ctrl+T doesn`t function as well!

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
    * Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
    * Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons
