Why Are Pages Opening in New Tabs Instead of Within the Pages?

Up until I upgraded to 10.1.10, tabs would almost always open in the same page as the link that contained it. If I wanted it to open in a new tab, or window, I can do that myself, using a menu. Now, it opens many more tabs than I need open, and only clutters up the screen, & adds more RAM usage to the already lumbering browser. Why is this happening, and is there any way to correct this?

No, cause it happens on many sites. I don't see what makes it do that for most, but then once in a while, it will open over the current page, like it almost always did before. I know it does this when I click a link from any Google search results page, which I don't recall it doing before. Up till now (5.1.10), there was always a preference setting where I could select links opening in new tabs, or not. Now, they open wherever they choose to, usually in new tabs, but sometimes not....
Here's my options:
"Open pages in tabs instead of windows:
Some links on webpages open in new Safari windows instead of replacing the current webpage. Choose Never to have such links open in new Safari windows instead of tabs. Choose Always to open new tabs instead of windows.
Choose Automatically to have Safari open pages in tabs unless they’re designed to fit in specially formatted separate windows; Safari opens those pages in windows instead."
So, none of these choices allow for pages to replace current webpages, which makes no sense.

• Is there any way to to have the "Home" icon open a new tab instead of replacing the current page with the home page?

I would prefer that the "Home" icon on the Navigation Toolbar open a new tab instead of replacing the current tab with the home page. Is there any way to accomplish this?
Thank you.

If you middle-click on the home icon it will open a new tab containing the home page.

• I want firefox to open the home page when i open a new tab instead of a blank page.

whenever i open a new tab, it shows me a blank page. i want firefox to go to my home page as soon as i click on new tab button.

If you want to have a choice of blank or homepage in a new tab, there is a simple way around this.
Open the Customize window and put the Home button on toolbar if not already.
Use the middle-click (scroll wheel on mouse) on Home button to open your homepage in a new tab, whenever you want homepage to load in a new tab.

• Why are images opened in new tabs expanding past 100%

When opening an image of any type in a new tab, it will scale down as normal, but when clicked to "fullsize," it zooms in past 100%, approximately the equivalent of two adjustments of the scroll wheel in.
Example: I have a 1920 x 1080 display, and if I expand a 1920x1200 image, the width far exceeds the horizontal boundaries (which should be identical, allowing no horizontal scrolling. To better describe this, here's an example: http://i.imgur.com/UfbqFnD.gif
Note the brackets highlighting the extra scrolling space on the bottom image.
I have a high dpi display (1920x1080, 15.6 in screen,) have tried setting Firefox to Disable Display Scaling on High DPI Settings, but to no avail.

• Today when I opened a new tab instead of a blank page (I set this up), it opened with a search engine. I think it was bing. How do I keep this from happening?

I want the settings I've set to remain. Lately, the search engine also changes from google to other ones. The other day it was Amazon. It's very frustrating when this happens. I'd like to know how to "freeze" the current settings so they can't be changed unless I want them to. It's very scary to think that somehow my settings change without my knowledge.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
*https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

• I downloaded Firefox 4.01 and now when i open a new tab, i get a blank page, instead of my home page. How do I change that? Thanks

I downloaded Firefox 4.01 and now when i open a new tab, i get a blank page instead of my home page. How can I default to my home page when a new tab opens?

You can do that by using an add-on such as:
* NewTabURL - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/newtaburl
* New Tab Homepage - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-homepage
Another way of opening the home page in a new tab is to middle click on the home button in the navigation toolbar.

• I have all tabs set to open with Google search, but when I open a new tab and start typing, the letters appear in the address bar and not the Google search bar. It didn't used to be like this!

Firefox 9.01; Windows 7 64 bit;
One of my set of home pages is the basic Google search page. When I open this, I can immediately start typing and the words appear in the Google search box.
If however I open a new tab (white cross far right of tab bar) and start typing, the words appear in the address bar, not in the Google search box. Of course once I click in the search box I can carry on: but I'd like to make it start there as it does with the homepage.

If you want a specific webpage (like the Google page) to always open when you open a New Tab, you can use the following add-on to Open New Tabs with your Favorite Pages:
-> NewTabURL 2.2.3
* https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/newtaburl/
* NewTabURL will not work until you set the page that you want to open in the Options for it.
* click Add-ons > Extensions, click Options next to NewTabURL.
Check and tell if its working.
Not related to your problem but do the following:
-> Update Firefox to the latest version 10
* [[Installing Firefox on Windows]]
-> Update All your Firefox Plugins -> https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
* '''When Downloading Plugins Update setup files, Remove Checkmark from Downloading other Optional Softwares with your Plugins (e.g. Toolbars, McAfee, Google Chrome, etc.)'''

• Tabs in Firefox 7 won't work...I can't open a new tab by clicking on the +.....only way to open a new tab is via the FILE/new tab option

Tabs in Firefox 7 won't work...I can't open a new tab by clicking on the +.....only way to open a new tab is via the FILE/new tab option...it seems like a lot of the options/buttons are non-pressable??

This issue can be caused by the Ask.com toolbar (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions)
Your system details show that toolbar in the user agent as AskTbYLC/3.11.3.15590
See:

• I am not able to open a new tab by clicking on the division sign

I can't open a new tab by clicking on the division sign to the right of the current tab or by left clicking on the current tab and selecting "New Tab."

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
* Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
* Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

• In the previous version of Firefox you would open a new tab by clicking on the small "Open New Tab" button at the Right Hand Side of the Tabs. This button has now disappeared in my upgrade.

I just installed Firefox 4. In the previous version you would open a new tab by clicking on the small "Open New Tab" button at the Right Hand Side of the Tabs. This button has now disappeared in my upgrade. Firefox help still says you can open a new Tab by using the "Open New Tab" Button so how do I get it back??

I got it back by going to "customize toolbar" and hitting "restore default set"! Now there is a small tab next to my open tabs with a "+" on it.
