Why are raw files not converting to DNG?

I currently have Photoshop CS3 with ACR 4.6.   I just purchased the Nikon D300s which doesnt work with this version of ACR, so I downloaded Convert to DNG 4.6 and unzipped it.  The box came up to convert and I hopefully entered all the correct info, then I received the Conversion Status box which shows all the files I chose, but it says none of them were converted with the following message:  "There was anerror parsing the file".
What does this mean and how can I fix it.  Thanks, Karen

Thanks Jim.  Are you talking about 5.5?   As far as I can tell, anything starting with the number 5 only works in CS4.  Which download would you suggest trying?
Thanks, Karen
Camera Raw 5.5 is only compatible with Photoshop CS4.  But the DNG converter 5.5 is a stand-alone program.  It runs by itself, it does not need any version of Photoshop to run.  DNG converter 5.5 will convert images from the most cameras, and will create DNG files that are compatible with ALL versions of Camera Raw since version 2.4.  So, yes, I am talking about DNG converter 5.5.  Download and install it and look at the options.  Choose appropriately, and then do your conversion.
As far as the version number is concerned, you need to concern yourself with it only because the version number will enable you to know which cameras are supported.  The DNG converter is released right along with Camera Raw, so the supported list is always in sync.  But it doesn't mean that DNG converter is only compatible with that same version.  I hope this clears it up for you.

  • Disc Burner. Why are some files not readable or writeable?

    Hello,
I am trying to backup my friends computer files on a beige G3 (233 MHz). I am burning about 6 DVDs of AIF music files. Most of the files are about 30 - 40 Megs in size. Often I receive error messages on particular files that read:
"The operation cannot be completed because some data cannot be read or written.
    (Error code - 36)"
Followed by the choices: "Stop" or "Continue".
I have a bad feeling that my startup disk is too small but I am not sure.
Most of the files work fine. However some of the files cause disc burner to not be able to use them in the disc image before I burn. Why would this be?
    Here are the specifications:
Computer: beige G3 with two hard drives (one SCSI and one ATA hard drive) and a Pioneer DVR-110D DVD writer which is Apple supported (Apple system profiler indicates Apple supported on this DVD writer). My blank DVD disks are Sony Vermatim DVD-R (1 - 16x speed support). Although I think my beige G3 only writes them at about 2 or 4x.
I am using OS 10.1.5. My startup disk which has OS 10.1.5 in it is a 4 GIG SCSI disk. Is this big enough for a startup disk (for creating 4.5 GIG DVDs)? My files are on the second hard drive which is a 40 GIG ATA disk.
I have a bad feeling that my OSX startup drive is too small for disk burning - it is only 4 GIGs in total and OSX Disc burner (Disc copy) is first making a disk image on my startup volume before it burns it. Perhaps that disk image is too large for the startup volume. Is there any way I could ask OSX to put this disk image on the second larger hard drive instead (not the startup drive?).
Here is my process (I hope I am doing this right - I am new at this):
    1. I first insert a blank DVD-R
    2. A message pops up asking my if I would like to create a blank disc image for this disk (I think this is the typical Disk Copy utility window. I say "yes" and give it a name and choose the "DVD-R or DVD-RAM" option. (I am not sure if there are other important settings to choose here or better settings to use but I guessed the other options that seemed obvious. A blank disk image is created with an icon that looks like a DVD disk.
    3. Then I drag my chosen files to this blank disc image. It takes about 30 minutes to copy over. Thats when I receive the error message that some files couldn't be "read or written". The other files work fine but it would be nice if they all worked.
Why would some files not be readable or writeable?
    4. Then I choose file/burn in the top menu and the DVD is created. This takes another 20 - 30 minutes. At the very end of the process another message pops up saying:
"Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code -28)" Followed by an "OK" button.
However all the files that made it onto the final DVD are fine - its just that its not all of the ones I originally chose in the first step when dragging to create the disk image.
Am I doing this the right way?
Why are some files not "readable or writeable" as it indicates in the error message?
Is my 4 GIG startup disk too small for this? or are the music files possibly corrupt? or could there be some other possible problem?
    Thanks

To follow up, I have some good news. After following your advice Kappy, it now works very well Thanks! Instead of using the 4 GIG volume for the OS, I am now using an 8 GIG partition on an 80 GIG drive. So now the OS has some room to operate. No disk errors occured on my first DVD
Now there was one problem. The second DVD burned gave me an error. I am not sure why but I am going to guess that because I had to installed the OS onto an 8 GIG partition maybe the OS needs to be rebooted in between disk burns because although 8 GIGs is certainly greater than the 4 GIGs I gave it last time, it still isn't a lot of space - maybe just enough to do one DVD at a time. Thats only a guess. So I rebooted to see if that clears the system out ready for the next DVD and I am trying to burn the second DVD again. If I remember I will report back. In any case, yes, this seems to be working. I hope this second DVD burns well too.
    Thanks Kappy

  • HT203088 Why are CR2 files not supported?  How do I get them to open??

I don't know if this should go in Aperture or not.  I have some photos that I took with a Canon 5D Mark III that are .CR2 and I CAN NOT get them to open in Camera Raw.  I have updated all of my software with the exception of the adobe products.  How do I get the .CR2 files to open???

    Kbrian
According to Apple the Canon 5D Mark III is supported in Aperture 3 or later
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
I am not a Canon user - but perhaps this model also allows you to save a small  RAW file - perhaps called sRAW?
This may not be supported by Apple
Be aware, that although the file has a CR2 file suffix, every RAW file is unique to the model that generates it and has to be individually supported by Apple via a system level update
    Hope this helps

  • Why are .RAW files showing as black video?

I've been editing broadcast spots using .RAW files from the Canon 5D and they have been working beautifully.  Now on the day they are due to the stations everything is showing up as just black screens.  Even in the Media Browser the files are there but there is nothing when I playback.

I have exactly the same problem, on a MacBook Pro after having upgraded from 10.4.x to 10.5.0.
I did a clean install of Leopard on an external firewire disk, and there it was all ok.
Then I phoned Apple support about it. The issue was new to them, but advised me to make a clean install and then migrate my old users from a backup image. I went through this time consuming procedure and, unfortunately, found the problem persisting. So I will do it again but before migration I will check if those files are correctly recognized (forgot to do that last time). Since I was advised by Apple not to migrate the network related data i will do so this time.
Of course, I'd like an easy fix much better!
Update to 10.5.1 did NOT help.

  • Why are shared files not visible when iPhone4S connected to iTunes?

What makes this problem mysterious is that I have exactly the same settings on the same or eqivalent Apps on iPad2 and iTunes4S but when my iPhone is connected to my iTunes (running on my PC under Win7) it shows no files on Apps like Pages, iBooks, Keynote, and Print-n-share.  Each of these Apps has files and each shows files when  I connect my iPad2.   I cannot export or import filesto/from itunes and iphone because the list of files inside the Apps is not visible in itunes.
PS I CAN, btw, export and import files by using the amazing App and service "DropBox" which is the only route in and out of my iPhone (I am not ready to use iCloud).

This is not a reply but an addition.  While searching for answers as to why "Shared" files in original Apps in my iPhone4S did not appear on itunes I came across a similar discussion on another Forum in which Jim described in some detail how to get the two devices (my iPhone 4S and my iPad2) to recognize similar embedded files in similar Apps.  https://discussions.apple.com/message/16690584#16690584
I went through this promising procedure but it did not help.  Since the two devices are independent (I think -- they are on the same accoubt but ar different devices) I should be able to make them work the same way with regard to what is seem in iTune.

  • Why are my files not available when checked out?

I have a relatively new Win 7 box, running TCS 4. So in Frame 11, I have checked out a book (using CMS/SharePoint) and everything checks out ok. But when I go to edit the files, they all have question marks and if I try to open them, the message is "cover.fm does not exist." for example.
Also, a long file directory is showing instead of just the file name.
Other users with similar setups are not having this problem.
I can work with other books just fine, but not this one (which is the MAIN one I use FM for!).
    Help!

FM uses the relative path from the book location for the filename displays in the book. If the book and files are all in the same location, then the FM will just display the filename. I'm not certain how it's handling things if you're checking things out of a repository, but it should have everything in the same folder, so relative naming should be expected.

  • Why are .xlsm file not listed under spreadsheet in finder?

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Why are my files not showing up on desktop?

I was running several programs on my macbook air: iChat, iCal, Mail, Word for Mac, Safari, and Finder. In Safari, I would right click on any file (word, powerpoint, pdf, etc) to download it to desktop as I normally would. All goes well until I actually go to desktop and see nothing. The file does not show in my desktop. I go into finder, pull up the desktop folder and the file is there. Here's the catch: files downloaded to desktop from other sessions show up in both locations (actual desktop and desktop folder in finder) but the new ones do not. Forcing all my programs to quit doesn't help, only restarting the system does and then the files show up in my actual desktop as opposed to only the desktop folder. I feel like this is rare and only happens when I have iChat open in addition to other programs (although I'll be doing more tests to confirm). I'm running the latest OS (Lion) on a Macbook Air. Anyone else seeing this issue or know what's going on?

  • Why are my files not opening in PS, when I select "edit in ps" ?

The external editor is Photoshop CC 2014 (PSD, Profoto, 16bit, 300ppi).   When I select edit in ps, ps opens but the file does not.  I suspect that I changed a preference somehow in the process of setting up the radial menu for my wacom tablet, or when I deleted Photoshop CC, when I realized that I had both PS CC, and PS CC 2014 on my system.  Would appreciate guidance to make necessary corrections, so files open in PS.

    See Rikk's response above.
Solution 2: Run a repair mode installation of Photoshop CC 2014 from the Creative Cloud desktop application.

  • Why are my files not enabled when I try to file place?

I'm running Mac OSX Lion 10.7.3. When I try to "place" a file in a document, the files are greyed out in Finder's window. Each time, I have to choose "Enable all readable documents" in bottom of my finder window to make them available.
PS 5, by default, showed them as enabled. Can anyone HELP?

  • Can't find any raw files to convert when I am using Adobe DNG converter

Recently I purchased a new Olympus XZ-1 camera. I shoot exclusively RAW pictures (raw files for this camera are called .orf). Then when I tried to import these .orf files in the organizer of Phtoshop Element 8 it was imposible, nor then I could see those pictures in the organizer. By surfing on diffrent forums, I was able to figure out that Camera Raw included in Element 8, Camera Raw 5.5, is not supporting the .orf raw from Olympus and if I didn’t want to upgrade my Element 8 to Element 9 or 10, a simple alternative was to download Adobe DNG converter to convert all my .orf files into dng files, which could then imported by Element 8 and opened in Camera raw 5.5.
I downloaded DNG converter version 6.6 and installed it in on my computer running on Windows 7. The problem is that once inside DNG converter, when selecting the folder where all my .orf files are (Select folder), I can't see any raw files to convert there! I tried to select a folder with NEF files instead (raw files from Nikon) and it is the same problem! Why can’t I see those files of mine I want to convert when I select the folder in DNG converter?
    I'm dying for help!
    Thanks a lot!

When you are selecting the folder in the DNG converter, you only click on the folder.  You DON'T double click on the folder.  After you have set your options, and chosen the folder, you click on the Convert button.  It is only after you have clicked on Convert that you will see the list of files that are being converted.  You will also be able to see an indicator of the progress of the conversion.  It really does work.  Just to verify, the procedure I outlined is one that I did just prior to trying to write the instructions.  It really isn't rocket science.  Just choose the folder, only the folder, and click on the Convert button.
You'll notice that the button prompts you to select the folder, it doesn't say anything about selecting a file.  You only select the folder that contains the files.  You will never see a list of files using this method.  If you only want to convert one or two images you can use the other method.  Leave the DNG converter closed, open the folder containing the DNG files in your operating system folder browsing utility, choose the file you want to convert, and drag it onto the icon for the DNG converter.  That is how you choose individual images.

  • Canon 5D Mk II Raw files not selectable by Adobe DNG 5.5

Well  to be more clear then the thread header, I am not able to select my old Nikon 5700 Coolpix files either. In other words the files are grey but the Adobe DNG browser is working when looking for file to select. I dropped the first download in the trash and downloaded again but same result.
I  have CS4 and all software is listed as compatible with Canon 5D mkII files. A friend of my was able open my 5D files from Adobe DNG 5.5 that were on his Windows platform.
i did not see any special instructions, and seems intuitive enough, but it must be some kind of Adobe 101 question. Any ideas out there. Thanks.

Well sorry for any confusion here. I don't think my question is vary misleading though.
I have a MAC using OS 10.4.11. G4 Dual 1000 Gig (2002) processors, 1.5 Gb SDRAM (maxed), Dedicated 80 Gb Scratch Disk for Photoshop, 500 Gb Internal Drive.
All operations are done using the MAC OS.
All files are grey when viewed through the  "Adobe DNG Converter 5.5" application browser. If you are familiar when you open Adobe DNG Converter the vary first step in the process is to ( 1. "Select Folder" ). Pressing this button opens a FINDER then if you will , (many applications refer this as using a their browser to locate files for opening).
I am referring to RAW files, and as stated earlier those from the 5D mk II and those from the  Nikon coolpix 5700 are not available for selection, or opening by Adobe DNG Converter 5.5, yet they are listed as being current with DNG Converter 5.5.   "All files are grey", So none of the image files have black text suggesting you may select those.
My  understanding is this converter was made for RAW files, not  "jpeg",  in hopes are creating a last RAW file format Standard that would be a usable archival format across mulitple platforms and through time   . The RAW files are Full 21 megapixel files, not the smaller files sizes  of RAW available on the 5D (ie: sRAW1, or sRAW2). The DNG converter should open all 5D mk II RAW files regardless of megapixel size unless otherwise stated.
My files can not be an issue , because also  stated  was that my files were opened by a DNG converter loaded on a Windows platform.
    Procedure performed as follows:
         - Open DNG Converter 5.5 on my Power MAC
         - Press " Select Folder " step number list as "#1"
         - DNG Finder or Browser opens allowing one to find the folder said RAW files are contained within for purpose of selecting full 21 megapixel RAW Format CR2 files for Conversion processing to a DNG file format.
         - Oops, can't select, files have grey text appearance. There are no image files at all with Black Text of any format available for selection, so can't select.
Adobe Photoshop CS4, Adobe CS4 Bridge, Adobe Camera RAW, Canon Utility package for the 5D mk II all these applications see the files, and function with them, no crashes, not hang ups, a little slower then the world turns now days but they do what they were meant to do.
    Thanks again.
