Why are shapes so difficult to use now?

I cant see a single way shapes in CC are better. All extra stages and annoyances, anyone have better workflow method to combat these new things?
1. Cant duplicate easily.
Before: select layer, cmd + j = duplicated
Now: select layer, cmd + j = blank layer, nothing.
Solution, select the pen, select the shape, select the layer, NOW duplicate.
Am I doing it wrong? Because before you could just duplicate, now you have to have the shape selected and the layer. This is very frustrating adding extra clicking/selection to my workflow.
If you right click a shape and duplicate, it works. So the shortcut of duplicate doesnt work the same?
2. Pen Points are infuritating.
Before: drag a box out to select multiple points on a shape.
Now: drag a box out, selects every point in the entire document on every layer. How is this better than before?
Solution, none really? If there is one I take it, its an extra click.
3. A shape remembers the last point you click. Great so now everytime I click a shape I have to deselect that point, and usually try to do that using a drag box, which doesnt work.
I just dont see how any extra workflow helps bring anything good to photoshop. What are the benefits to this new system?

I have bought a Ipad 4 a week ago and find it is like wading though treacle to get my data loaded! Itunes seems very unintuitive and difficult to use. I managed to transfer my music and films over from my PC and started using them on the Ipad when suddenley they dissappeared! "No Content" so I had to go back and reload them all again. I still have not found a way to transfer and use my documents onto the Ipad. I have an Android tablet and that is so simple to use(and a liot less expensive to buy). Why can't I access the file system on the Ipad, this seems to be the heart of my problems. I am not inexeperienced with computers as I am a retired Computer Manager/Analyst/[programmer over 20 years.

If they have the cloud icon then they are in the cloud, not on your iPod. You can turn off the showing of iCloud music via Settings > iTunes & App Store > Music (under 'show all' heading) 'off'.
But if you have never bought/downloaded those songs then they shouldn't show in the cloud for streaming/redownloading - the U2 album was an exception, Apple automatically added that to everyone's account whether they wanted it or not. It's your account that shows as being logged in in Settings > iTunes & App Store ?

Why are my contacts that i am now saving, saving as unified contacts?

I saved a contact in my phone and only the name and number, but when i went back in to view the contact its showing as unified info, and i didnt put all the info listed under that contact in i.e. Twitter account, facebook, address, etc. why are my contacts now being saved that way and how come peoples full names, or facebook names showing up in the text if they are not even saved into my contact list?

This is being caused by using the same Apple ID for iMessage. To fix this you have two choices:
On all but one of the phones go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with a different ID. Note: you can still share the same ID for purchasing in Settings>iTunes & App Stores; or
On all of the phones go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and uncheck the email address(es) shown under "You can be reached by iMessage at".

IT's up to them to redo their pages to be more compliant with the rest of the internet. Flash, as a program, is like a VCR. Still usable, still functional, but its days are numbered....may be numbered in the thousands, but its a program that people literally block and disallow from their computers. As far as some are concerned, it's legal malware.
I personally love the fact that I can avoid all those '2 meg take over your browser and screen' ads with my iPad. It is frustrating to find polls and the such that don't function, but that's when I just pull out hte laptop and use that. And on any given day I run my laptop with flash deliberately turned off and blocked...and its's amazing how fast the internet is without all the massive ads.
There are some browsers in the app store that work with some flash sites (there's none that are universally compatible....part of the problem with Flash as a program, it doesn't even work consistently from comptuer to computer)
Skyfire and Photon are two names I've seen recommended. You can give them a try and see if they work for you.

Why is iTunes so difficult to use? It is time consuming and not at all intuitive. I will me complaining as much as possible until this is fixed. We should be able to drag songs to a playlist...surely technology has come this far has it not??

Until 3 months ago (when I bought a $10 no-contract phone for emergency use only) if somebody lent me their cellphone to make a call I had no idea how to do so. I would get them to dial a number, talk, then I would hand it back to them to hang up. Even now if my wife gives me her iPhone to make a call I have to ask her to do it because I have no devices of any kind that have touchscreens. The timer went off the other day when she was out of the house and I somehow managed to get the thing quiet.

Why are variants sometimes better to use than clusters?

I am using variants in a driver I am developing to avoid having to pass a ton of wires between subVIs. My mentor asked me why I was doing this. He wanted to know why I wasn't just using clusters. The only answer I could come up with was that is was convenient to be able to "dereference" (I'm not sure if this is the correct term) the variant for attributes with the Get Variant Attribute VI and a string associated with the attribute of interest. Are there any other advantages of using variants?

Yes! Variants are great when you are trying to write code that must operate on many different data types. However there are caveats that make error handling more difficult and critical. Why are the following processes always using lots of memory?

Can someone tell me why the following processes are always using lots of memory and are always running?
kernel_task 280MB
java 300MB
clamd 120MB
mds 100MB
WindowServer 100MB
coreservicesd 60MB

Because they require that much memory and because the processes are always in use.
This is one reason why the minimum system memory requirement is 1 GB.
Now, you have one third-party process listed, clamd, which is used by ClamXAV anti-virus software. If you can uninstall it you will recover the memory needed by clamd.

Why are the 3 maints done twice now? Tiger 10.4.11 bug?

I've noticed that recently in Tiger 10.4.11 the daily, weekly and monthly tasks are done twice * in the same job*. Can some of you check your Console Logs and see if you are seeing something similar to below? Makes no sense. I wonder if this is a bug in the latest update to Tiger since it didn't used to do this (but I'm not sure from when.) I'm curious. Is there any way to track down why this is happening. Where ARE these scripts hidden?

Don't get excited – I don't have an answer, I'm just posting to tell you that you are not alone. I only have this 'doubling' with periodic daily. I cannot be sure when it started, but I think probably in one of the early iterations of Tiger. I spent much time and effort back then trying to track down the reason but failed. The doubling is sporadic, showing a double entry in daily.out on some days, not on others, with no discernible pattern, rhyme or reason that I could fathom. When there is just one entry the date stamp is spot on; when there are two entries the first is always 6 or 7 seconds before the appointed time, the second spot on. An example (my 'daily' is set for 5:05 am)…

My current suspicion/guess… I do re-boot to move from one volume to another on some days and not on others. It is well known that launchd has never quite got it right concerning the running of periodic tasks following computer sleep. I never sleep my Mac, but I wonder if what you and I are noticing is a related 'glitch' with launchd's timings. I realise that I should have kept notes of when I re-booted but at those times I have been too involved with what I was doing to remember! Does this possibly give you a clue? If I am right then the 'glitch' is hidden in the inner workings of launchd's mathematics and that would explain why we have not been able to find a 'culprit'.
It would be good if you could do what I should have done ( ) – keep an eye on re-boots. I would feel happier to know that the glitch was down to Apple and launchd and not due to anything 'wrong' at my end. I expect you would feel the same.
PS "An early iteration of Tiger" would fit in with the switch from cron to launchd.

Why are my .avi files extracted using PE3 only playing audio when using Windows Media Player?

I extracted a lot of my old movies using PE3 that came from my 8MM camera. They played fine on XP.
I now have Windows7 64 bit and when I play them in Windows Media Player, they only play the sound.
I'm guessing that this is a codec issue.
Should I re-extract them using a different product that uses a more standard codec?

It depends on your workflow. So we'll need more details.
How did you digitize the video from your 8mm camcorder? Many devices capture as AVIs, but do so while using codecs that aren't universally playable. Also, do make sure you've got the latest version of Quicktime on your new computer. It can add some important video functionality to your computer.
You say you used Premiere Elements to "extract" your movie. How did you do this? Did you use a device like the ADS Pyro AV Link or Grass Valley Canopus AVDC?
Finally, are you trying to play the raw files or did you create a project with them in Premiere Elements and then Export/Share your video? And, if the latter, which output settings did you choose?
Meantime, try downloading VLC Player to your new computer and see if it can play the files. It is a much better player than Windows Media Player (or Quicktime Player, for that matter). And let us know yoru results.

Why are all my keyboard shortcuts using the "Alt" key instead of the "Ctrl" key? I'm using Windows 7 and Firefox 5.0.1.

I recently downloaded Firefox 5 and noticed that all my keyboard shortcuts default to using "Alt" key instead of the "Ctrl" key (so, for example, opening a new tab is Alt + T instead of Ctrl + T).
I noticed that this is even true for copying and pasting within Firefox (Alt + C and Alt + P are the only commands that work).
Any idea why this is happening? I am running Windows 7 and Firefox 5.0.1.

When using Creative Cloud Library assets created in Illustrator why are the naming conventions I use not being pulled over into the Photoshop layers?

I create the Creative Cloud Library asset in illustrator and give it a name such as "camera-icon". It shows up in my Creative Cloud Library pane in Photoshop as "camera-icon". When I use that asset in Photoshop the layer is randomly named "a56bd81d-d81f-4815-82b3-5795d410b527". Why is this happening? Shouldn't that layer resolve the name back to "camera-icon" so that when I extract files for use in my application the naming convention is correct. Right now I have to manually rename that layer again. Is this a bug or have I just not done something correctly?

I think you have pasted the entire crash log. In case of such issues in future, please paste the error screenshot.
Seems to be a permission issue. Lets follow the below suggestions:
Solution 1: Rename the following folders on your machine:
'/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Profiles'
'/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Recommended'
Solution 2: Rename the following files:
'/Library/Application Support/Adobe/caps/Media_db.db'
'/Library/Application Support/Adobe/caps/pdb.db'
Make sure you dont touch caps.db under the same folder. Now run the installer again. Let me know if you need more help.

Please Run following commands on terminal on the machine (this will remove the corrupt fonts and should allow you to run the installer successfully) -
sudo mv "/Library/Fonts/ACaslonPro-Bold.otf" /tmp/
sudo mv "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/SavedFonts/current/AdobeArabic-Bold.otf" /tmp/
sudo mv "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/HelpCfg/de_DE/goURL_lr_photoshop_de.csv" /tmp/

I wonder if Number '09 can now open an excel document with 10000 rows in it and scroll without problem (just like in Excel)? –If that works I probably will stop using Excel, but I find I still need to use Excel because it takes too long time doing the same things in Numbers (I do not do any calculations (nearly) -- only catalogue listings/data. /Jerry

I just installed Numbers '09, and using a spreadsheet that originated on Excel, and one that originated on Numbers '08 (with around 6700 rows each) - I found that the speed in which I could scroll - and more importantly the speed in which I can use the "command F" function to find line items is incredibly slow. Since there are no real functions in this spreadsheet (short of occasional sums, and each line item having an a-b=c, where the a and b are entered, it should be an easy job - and it is in Excel. As an example, if you have 5000 lines - and let's say your box cursor is sitting on line 2500. If you try to find something on line 3700 - it's quick and easy. If you try and find something on line 1800 it takes almost 2 minutes. The only solution is to search in reverse mode. (Apparently, it goes down to the end, then works it's way back from line 1). If you don't know where the item is, relative to where you are in the spreadsheet, you are doomed 50% of the time. When I installed Work '09, I thought it would be an improvement - but it's even worse. Now when you do a Command F (regardless of it's location on the spreadsheet) it searches the ENTIRE spreadsheet, and gives you the results of your search in a smaller window. You then have to press that search result item again, to move your box cursor to the appropriate cell. So - my recommendation would be to remain with Excel - I'm sad to say.

Why are swatches I'm not using 'merge' into my document?!?

Do color swatches 'stick' to an Illustrator file even after you delete them? I have to use the same spec box on all my documents to relay info to my printer which is in it's own Illustrator doc. BUT when I copy it and paste it into any file I am working on Illustrator always asks me about merging the swatches even tho there is only ONE color being used in my spec box file. HELP!!! My printer is losing patience b/c they think my files are a mess when I send them but my swatch pallet is clean and tidy on my end! Is there a way to clean up this mess??

Sticky Colors
There is a technical problem where swatches keep coming back, but you would see "deleted global color" as the swatch name. If your swatch palette is tidy and clean, then make a screen shot and attach that in an email to your printer, and ask them to return a screenshot showing the problem colors. Post the screenshot here and we can better help you.

Does you clipboard and the document you are pasting into both contain the offending color? That error should only come up in that case and the colros haev the same name, btu a different color composition

I don't know where to pose these questions. I'm going nuts with these forums, specifically the InDesign forum. I've sent multiple emails to "[email protected]," but, nobody responds.
I have to close down Safari and go back in three or four times before I can get the forum link to work. It's just dead there.
I no longer get email notifications when someone has answered a question I posed. I have to manually go into the forum every half hour or so to see if anyone's responded. The forum used to be much "healthier" in that regard. I was always notified when I got a response from anyone.
I opened a discussion yesterday. But, today, there's no way for me to continue or see that discussion anymore. Only the most current discussions are shown. And, there's no visible way for me to see any "old" ones.

Oh... and you do not receive an actual email, you receive a notice in the orange circle to the left of your avatar picture at the top right of the forum screen
Click your avatar picture near the upper right corner (slightly to the left of the pencil) and select PREFERENCES then set all Email Preferences to OFF and click Save at the bottom left

Another new "feature" is that Jive7 is oriented toward social networking... so every time you start or reply to a message you are automatically added to a FOLLOW list... meaning you receive a notification of every subsequent message in that thread
