Why are software instruments so quiet ??

I have been composing with Logic's software intruments and I have found that the overall volume of the instruments are generally very low. When I go to record live instruments over them I have hard time getting the soft instr's up to the volumes of audio tracks. The meters are very low to begin with.
Why do soft instr's record at such low levels?

your question did come across as quite newbie, and it is the sort of thing that a lot of new users do ask... it's easy to misconstrue where someone is coming from on this forum especially when they don't give any details in their question that indicate any specific knowledge about the area in question.
Does anyone else have this issue?
I personally wouldn't even consider it an issue.. modern DAWs are designed to deal with input sources as variable as they come. add this to the fact that they can also generate so much extra gain when you start using piles of plug ins, typical of modern production, so having headroom to spare is not an issue.
also, some audio instruments are going to have a broader range of base levels just by their nature - the EXS24 especially. the output level of a sampler is always going to change from sound to sound depending on the personal taste (or laziness/dilligence if you want to look at it that way) of the person that built the sound.
other instruments just have arbitrary basic levels, probably set that way to allow for the ful dynamics of the instrument to be available without clipping too easily. adjust them either with their own volume control (if they have one) or just use a gain plug in. also, make sure you haven't accidentally sent midi volume or expression control data that is turning them down.

On Mac, there's a built-in keystroke combination (and also a keypad swipe combo) that enlarges the whole screen, not just the document in the active window. Search Google for terms like "screen magnifier for windows" without quotes to find one or more for your particular Windows version.

HT3161 I have a 27" mac running with a 3.4 ghz core i7 and 16 gigs of ram and using the latest logic. I have a composition consisting of 7 audio tracks and 4 software instruments and 4 plugins on 4 tracks so why is my CPU spiking ?

I'm running a 27" imac with a 3.4ghz core i7 processor and 16 gb of ram.... In logic I have a project with 7 audio tracks with various plugins running and 4 software instruments which incidentally are not playing all the way through the track...my CPU spikes even if the project is paused...why is this happening on such a high end machine.....wasting my money again seems to spring to mind !!

How do I find out which instruments are used by software instrument loops?

This isn't so much a problem, it's just something that's been bugging me - how do I find out which instruments are used by the software instrument loops?
Usually clicking on a track will bring up the instrument name in the track info pane, but if I do this after importing a software instrument loop into my song it doesn't show anything. Any ideas?
PS I have used the search function so I apologise in advance if there's an obvious answer.

Looking at all this crowd support info, I seem to find quite a bit asking about device updates being so much slower than Optus and Vodafone.
Telstra, why, why are you so slow in releasing updates. The various networks have different philosophies on testing and releasing software.It also depends on how thoroughly various networks conduct their testing, and their philosophy of allowing a certain degree of software bugs or software issues to be released, and patched later. In relation to Telstra, they are the dominant network operator in Australia, and in fact one of the 5 best operators in the world. The last thing they need is a product not to fulfill their criteria, with the resultant backlash. When testing is thoroughly done, it is almost inevitable that some issues will be found, and that requires negotiation with the manufacturers, and then it's up to the manufacturers to fix those issues and re-release the software. Then the testing is re-done and sometimes it is again not approved by the operators. That simply takes time. Different networks have different philosphies as to what is acceptable to release. Also, the same generic software can display issues that often requires customisation to a degree for different networks.I hope this explains the situation to you. It is extremely complex as phones have now become a multitude of devices all in one.

Using software instruments that are stored on an external drive.

I recently bought Logic 9. Doing a custom install, I stored the instrument library on an external disk thinking it would be easy to use the instruments at a later time. Now, however, when I create a software instrument track, I only see the basic exs instruments. I can't find any further help on how to use my full library of instruments stored on my external drive. This must be simple, but I can't figure out. Any help would be much appreciated.

Logic looks at the Garageband library for these.
You'll need to go in there and create an alias to where you've put your content, otherwise they won't show up in the Garageband instruments section.

Are there software instrument plug-ins for Garage Band?

Is there a way to import new software instruments? I would like to add a Rickenbacker bass sound to the drop-down list. Is that even possible?

Loaded Instruments Too Quiet in Logic Pro X

Hi,
Firstly here is my setup:
Mac
iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2012
3.1GHz Intel Core i7
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB
OS X 10.9.4
Logic
Logic Pro X
Version 10.0.7
I use Logic with Kontakt and PLAY for loading different sample libraries.
PLAY version 4.1.8
Kontakt version 5.3.1.37
(As far as I know; all of this is as up to date as it can be as of the time of writing)
Now the problem:
Very simply put, instruments seem to be loading from either Kontakt or PLAY at low volumes, when they never have before. The reason I have asked this question in a Logic forum is because I have started to notice Logic only instruments doing the same thing. For example, the default software instrument: Classic Electric Piano, nearly always loads quietly. I have to select another instrument, then go back to the Classic Electric Piano for it to load at the correct volume.
Now to expand on this issue, I notice that the levels of the track indicated in Logic are still at a reasonable volume - and supposedly as high/loud as other instruments. But when I play notes on the quieter track the output volume through my iMac's builtin speakers is extremely low. In order to counteract this, I have been turning up the volume for these quiet tracks in the mix, as well as adding compression to increase the volume - but the downside of this is that the overall quality of the instrument is lost because it also turns up all the other things in the track (i.e. natural reverb, feedback and fuzziness) that would normally be unheard when the instrument plays at the correct volume.
I hope I have explained this well enough. It is hard to describe what happens without you actually hearing the difference. I do not really know what has caused this to happen - is it Logic? PLAY? Kontakt? Or even my builtin speakers? Do I need some external ones? - and it seems to have started quite randomly. It also seems to randomly happen on any instrument in either Logic, PLAY or Kontakt.
Hopefully someone will have some idea of what I can do to fix this problem and return my instrument's to their default output volume without the need for compression.

I haven't used Logic X yet, but previously there was a preference regarding whether a new track would load the default Electric Piano.
So the way you're describing it, turning that off would fix your problem? Although I don't know why it's so quiet and perking up after switching instruments.
I have noticed that when I load evp88 (is that what it's called?) into a blank audio inst track, it's really low. I just assumed that how it was.

Can I use a MIDI keyboard as an input device for a software instrument?

I have a Casio CTK-2100 that I am currently playing around with in Logic Pro 9. It can record and playback the different instruments fine using MIDI tracks. But I was wondering if it is possible to use the keyboard as an input device for a software instrument instead of the "Step Input Keyboard".
Is it? If so, how do I set it up?

Yes, the terminology can be a bear, many, many years ago when I started using Logic the manuals were written completely by the programmers, while they were quite humorous in places the were also really hard to understand so I learned/realized.. you can't really do anything so wrong it's going to destroy your computer so why not go ahead and experiment. I learned the basics of Logic without a manual, months later when I went back to find some some details I could figure out the manual made a lot more sense.
Logic has been somewhat Appleized but it's not really an Apple program, it was purchased almost as developed as it is now... a lot of the additions a fluff to make it easier to understand for new users while at the same time there are some real improvements.
This is personal opinion: With all of the forums/online tutorials...etc...etc. It seems users are learning (but not understanding) the same things, plus everyone wants to use it right away so nobody takes a deep breath and investigates on their own. Logic is a deep, deep program, while learning don't be afraid to go off on a tangent and explore the program without any other input, it can actually be inspirational. One other thing good about the manual or "Online Help", in looking up a function you will invariably come across a related concept that will provide further insight.

Control only the software instrument of one channel strip at a time with one Controller

I have a Nord Lead 2 and a Korg Nanokontrol and I want to use these as Midi controllers in the following way, but don't really know how to set up the system:
I have 4 Channelstrips and each has the free software instrument Tyrell N6 inserted. I have the opportunity to change the volume of each channel strip with my faders on the Nanokontrol which works fine and gives me the opportunity to make layers and change also to only use one sound at a time. And this works fine. However, now I want to have the opportunity to change the parameters of each Tyrell with my Nord Lead. But with 4 channelstrips each with a Tyrell N6 I want to have the opportunity to only somehow manipulate only one instance of Tyrell at a time and change the channelstrip for which the Nord Lead manipulates the Tyrell. Is there an opportunity in Mainstage to do that?

Thank you very much for your answer. I tried it yesterday, but it doesnt really work for me to be honest. The thing is that I really wanna stick to one patch, so that I can have like one patch for each song.
However, if you might be interested I found a way to do it yesterday on my own. This is how I have done it:
In Layout-Mode
- Create Controls for each instance of Tyrell. For my purpose I created 4 times:
             - controlls for the Filter Section
             - controls for ADSR1
             - controls for ADSR2
- So you have 4 Sections of controllers in Layout Mode. Each meant to controll one Tyrell Instance
- Now each section gets its own Midi Channel. So all the controllers of section 1 respond to MIDI Channel 1 and the controllers of section 2 respond to MIDI Channel 2 and so on.
- Now you tell the Nord Lead that it should send via MIDI Channel 1 and you assign the Cutoff-Controller of the Nord Lead to the controller (the one of the first section) that is suppose to control the cutoff of the first Tyrell. And you proceed this way until all the controllers of the first sections are assigned. Then you swith to MIDI Channel 2 on the Nord Lead and assign the Cutoff-Controller of the Nord Lead to the controller (the one of the second section) that is suppose to control the cutoff of the second Tyrell. And here again you proceed this way until all the controllers of the second sections are assigned. Then you go on with the third and fourth section taking MIDI Channel 3 and 4.
In Edit-Mode
- In Edit Mode now you of course assign the controllers to the functions in each Tyrell
Result
- Now you can switch between the MIDI Channels on the Nord Lead. This is quiet easy because you can assign a MIDI Channel to one of four buttons on the Nord Lead.
- So if you switch to MIDI Channel 1 you can controll the functions of the first Tyrell and if you switch to MIDI Channel 2 you can controll the functions of the second Tyrell. And all in one Patch with only one controller which is even from the nineties. I find this really great. The only problem is that the Layout might get really messy, if you try to maybe control more functions of each Tyrell. And I really think maybe Mainstage in future could give us the opportunity to create bigger Layouts - maybe with different Windows or something.

Adding to the loops folder/software instrument folder/components etc

i was screwing my whole GB system by messing with the entire folders labelled
like instrument library (dragging in a new one replacing the old one).
thus i kept getting "cant find application bundle".
the RIGHT/way to add software instruments, sf2's, components ( AU plug ins )
is to go to the folder that houses them and delete or add them there.
To add loops you drag the new loops over the loop area on the GB interface.
You do not replace whole loop folders with new ones. If i buy third party
or update computers that have additional software instruments i get them by
going to the exact folder that houses the SI's and add them there. Is this all correct? because this may sound basic but i have thousands of loops and alot of SI's and i must learn how to add these to additional computers or the same one?
please instruct me.

This is the only real issue I have had with the phone and I am not sure why this happens. I ended up changing mine to the code entry lock, which works well. My fear is getting completely locked out and having to do a factory reset. Other that this, I have had no other problems with mine.
