You can try a few different encoding settings: "View > Character Encoding" like Western ISO-8859-1 or another Western encoding or UTF-8
You can also try to switch on Auto-Detect: "View > Character Encoding > AutoDetect > Universal"
A diamond with a '?' usually indicates that a character is missing in the font that is used on a website or the wrong encoding is used.
You get the '?' on websites that use an 8 bit encoding like ISO-8859-1 or a Windows encoding like Windows-1252.
This issue can happen if content was copied from one 8 bit or Unicode encoding to another encoding.

Question Mark in black diamond in Safari and Adobe Lightroom
I have a problem with the “question mark in black diamond” phenomenon noted elsewhere in these forums. My problem is different in certain aspects, though, and I’ve found nothing which suggests a way forward in other threads.
I get the “? in black diamond” appearing in two contexts:
(1) in the UI of the Web Module in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom when using the LRG One with PapPal Template (from lightroomgalleries.com), and selecting a currency symbol other than $ (i.e. when using £, EUR, or the Yen symbol)
(2) when viewing web pages generated by the Lightroom Web Module with the PayPal template in Safari
In both these contexts, the currency symbol is displayed as “? in black diamond” in place of the "£" symbol.
The strange thing about this is that when I view the output in other browsers (I’ve tried IE5 for Mac, Camino, Firefox, OmniWeb and Opera), the “£” currency symbol shows up ok. However, it can’t just be a Safari issue, as the “?” shows up in the Lightroom Web Module interface as well.

Before posting here, I’ve tried various forums relating to Lightroom (Adobe Lightroom U2U, lightroomgalleries.com, luminouslandscape.com) but to no avail.
So this is a last chance post: hopefully one of the OS X experts here may be able to suggest a reason for this (is it a font issue? or something to do with UTF-8, or Safari’s default encoding? – I’m not a coder, but I really want to find the answer so I’ll try just about anything…), and maybe a way to solve it. BTW, I get the same experience on my G4 iMac and my MacPro, so I guess it’s not an Intel-specific issue.

Thanks for this. I've tried previously changing the Default encoding in Safari Prefs to Western (ISO Latin 1), but found that did not help.
Following your advice I tried changing encoding from the View menu, and find that the £-sign displays correctly in both ISO Latin 1 and MacRoman (though not in UTF-8). The odd thing about this is that with Default Encoding in the Prefs set to either of those, I still get the ? until I go into the View menu and change from Default to Latin 1 or MacRoman, whereupon the £-sign shows up! Can't imagine how that can be. Tried closing and re-opening Safari after setting Pref to Roman 1, but still need to use the View menu to get the £-sign. Restaring the Mac doesn't help either.
So, Tom, with your help I now have a viable workaround, but as this is going to remain an issue for other Mac/ Safari users visiting my site, I'd like to find a way of preventing it happening. Can you suggest how it can be that Safari needs to be told twice (in Prefs and in View menu) to use ISO Latin 1 or MacRoman before it does so?

(P.S.: It seems to me this must be linked to the fact that the ? shows up in the Lightroom interface, and that the fault lies with the PayPal gallery Template I'm using. So I'm wondering if there's anything you - or anyone else - can suggest that I can put to the developer of the Template which will enable him to resolve the issue - he's a Windows user, but has made one suggestion that I adapt the encoding in a file called transformer.xslt from it's default of ISO_8859-15 to UTF-8. I've tried that and tried also ISO_8859-1, but the issue persists regardless.) -
Why are some websites that are important to many people, such as the FAFSA (federal financial aid for students) website or the Bank of New York Mellon website, not permitting access to computers running Firefox versions newer than 3.6 when Mozilla is claiming that 5.0 is more stable and secure?

FredThe ghosted/grayed values correspond with auto sorting. Auto sorting drops the leading articles, a/an/the, and variations in other languages, so that for example, The Beatles sorts as Beatles under B unless you explicitly override the auto sort by putting The Beatles in the sort value so that it sorts under T.

Photos from the Internet will not load correctly. I get white boxes with blue question marks inside. This has only been happening for the past 3 weeks so I'm not sure why it is happening.
Yes - email & text work fine but when I use something like Google Images or search a blog with imbedded photos I get the empty white boxes with question marks. If I click the question mark it opens the photo but I can't possibly do that for EVERY image on EVERY page I search!?!?! I've rebooted the iPad & my wireless card several times but neither action helped. Have any clue what I should do now?

My new Mac mini (3 month) didn't start up, all that appeared was a white screen and a flashing folder with a question mark inside it.
I followed by recommendations from 'Everything Mac': "shut it down by pressing and holding the power button for about 5 seconds.
Then hold down the Option key and press the power button again to start up the Mac mini. Keep holding down the Option key until
the Mac mini starts up."
But I got a Wi-Fi button only to chose and connect the local network. I connected to my network and I can't use this connection

Could you please help me?Your Mini (running 10.6.4) should have come with grey-colored install disks. Now is the time to put them into service. Turn on your computer so that there is power to accept disk #1 into the optical drive. Once the disk is in the drive, shut off the computer by holding the start button down until it powers off. Then turn it on this time holding down the "C" key to make the computer boot from the disk. The question mark that you saw indicates that the computer cannot find a bootable volume. This can happen due to corrupted system files or an improper shutdown etc. Once you are in the "Installer" you can choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu in the menu bar. Use it to repair the disk and to see if that can solve your trouble.

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
With 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6 put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion or 10.9 Mavericks, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7, 10.8 or 10.9 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead. -
As I say my computer, a mac mini refuse to start. When I turn it on it gives the startup sound and the screen turns grey and stay that way for a long time. And in the end a small folder icon with a question mark inside (it doesn't blink) turns up in the middle of the screen.
I have tried to start up from the installation CD holding down the C key on the keyboard. Same result. I have tried different key combinations while starting up. No result or rather same result. Nothing. Is the computer suddenly dead?
I was about to buy a new computer but I need access to my data on this one (I write this on an iPad) but hven't yet found a way.
Anybody have any good advice?
I thought it was a software problem, that the computer couldn't find the startup software or something and maybe it is, but I am beginning to fear that it could be a hardware problem.You need to re install OSX. What does the icon of a folder with a question mark inside mean?
After an overnight power outage I tried to turn on my iMac this morning, but all I got was clicking sounds and a gray full screen with the icon of a folder with a question mark inside it, blinking. (There's no tool bar that appears anywhere). What does that mean?
I've tried unplugging the system and waiting a while before attempting another boot. Same screen.
I recently (a month ago) upgraded to Snow Leopard from my original OS X software. Never had this sort of a problem before.The iMac was purchased around 2005 or 2006. Intel Dual Core processor.

But since I can't open anything on the iMac, I guess I'll have to see if the install disk works before I try to figure out IF I can use that WD-External drive temporarily rather than replace the HD on the iMac. Any clues on what a replacement drive and labor runs for that sort of iMac repair?

Apostrophe etc converting to question mark in black diamond
I have read the related threads and do not see an actual answer to the problem other than the suggestion that I turn off Straight Quotes with Smart Quotes which does not make sense as everyone else here has it turned on. I am one user of many on
our system and only a few have this problem. When I send an email it looks fine. When I receive the reply back my apostrophes and 3 dots etc are replaced with a question mark inside a black diamond. It's related to the character set and character encoding you are using and the easiest, sure-fire fix is to disable smart quotes. Using ISO-8859-1 encoding and a standard font should fix it too, but it may still be a problem for a few recipients. Using the
basic ACSII characters will guarantee it doesn't happen.
What encoding are you using? Look in File, Options, Advanced - near the bottom. Try Western European (ISO), not UTF-8.
What font do you use? Stick with one of the standard fonts.

What is a grey file with a question mark inside doing on my start up screen
when i start up my computer instead of the normal apple symbol showing up i get a grey folder that has a white question mark inside and it is flashing. I know that that means that the computer cannot find the operating system. can anyone help or give me a solution to this problem and a way i can fix it.
There are four general causes of this issue:
1. The computer's PRAM no longer contains a valid startup disk setting when there aren't any problems with the disk itself. This can be checked for by pressing the Option key and seeing if the drive appears.
2. The internal drive's directory structure has become damaged. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to perform the repair.
3. Critical system files have been deleted. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to reinstall them.
4. The internal drive has died or become unplugged. This is the most likely case if the computer took a sharp impact or there are unusual sounds coming from the hard drive's location.

White Macbook has folder with a question mark inside when powered on.
My brother has a white macbook given to him from a friend and when it is powered on it shows a folder icon with a question mark in the inside flashing and it doesn't boot. He has sent me on a quest to get a power adapter and a new hard drive, He thinks the hard drive is fried. Does anyone know for sure if thats the case, I just don't want to buy all that stuff to figure out that the logic board is dead or something else irreplaceable. There is no backup disks, all I have is a replacement leopard disk from apple used for my mac mini.
If it is a retail Leopard disc--black with a giant purple X on it--then yes, you could use them, with a couple of caveats. One, it would technically be a violation of the license to use that install of Leopard on more than one computer, and terms of use on this forum forbid me from encouraging such an action. And two, depending on how old this used MacBook is, your install of Leopard may pre-date manufacture of the MacBook and, as a result, not be able to boot the MacBook anyway. However, judging by the info in your signature, that is probably not a problem.
If the disc for your Mini is gray and shipped with or was meant to ship with the Mini, then no, the disc will not work.
I still encourage you to get the system discs that came with the MacBook originally, as they have the Apple Hardware Test included, and, as I suggested above, running any OS (or other Apple software) on a Mac without the discs means technically it's an unlicensed copy.
