Why are style overrides rejected by preflight

I have done four volumes of a set for a client and on number 5, ID has decided that all of my style overrides are unacceptable. Because the client wants each word in the indigenous language to be bold italics and each word in Spanish to be italics, I have done that consistently in other volumes simply by highlighting the words and changing the character styles (or doing a find/replace styles for the most common words). Four volumes, no problem. Volume 5 BIG problem. I still have 239 errors (out of approximately 800+) to fix in the preflight panel and I'm getting seriously frustrated. I can do them ONE at at time, by double clicking it in the preflight panel and then clicking on the style in the character styles panel that I need and it goes nicely away. It won't let me choose multiple ones to fix at one time. I will be here another hour doing the next 239 of them. What did I do wrong? I used a template made from a previous volume for this one, so i can't figure out why with this volume it refuses to accept overrides. No problem in previous volumes. What's the big deal? Within any paragraph of any text in any job done in ID, even a style marked as "normal," could need an italicized word from time to time, so what's going on? I know I must be missing something fundamental. So help me out here. I'm ready to scream.
I just tried using find/replace again, hoping that would help--NOPE. While it said it did over 100+ changes, they still come up as errors on pre-flight.

Thanks, Willi. I only set the profile to ignore style overrides relating to the character styles in the text. It still warns me of other issues. Plus, there are so freaking many of these style overrides, that I can make sure I've caught them all and look out for other character style issues that are not related to the indigenous language or Spanish. Having these overrides in the document are simply the nature of the text. I will definitely preflight the PDF before sending it to the printer--that will uncover other issues I might have missed.

  • Why Are Styles Relative to Components and Not Skins?

    I am trying to make a skin for a Button that consists of nothing more than an image. I want to make a generic skin that I can reuse and just have a style for the source of the image. The problem, however, is that the [Style] metadata tags exist on the Button component and not on the skin. Thus, since Button does not have a "source" style property defined, I cannot do something like this:
    <s:Button skinClass="{ImageButtonSkin}" source="@Embed('/assets/images/gripper.png')" />
    Since there is no "source" style for button this results in a compile error. It seems to me like this shouldn't be an issue. Since all of the presentation is inside of the skin, shouldn't the styles be defined on the skin instead of the component? If the reason for not doing this is backwards compatibility related, then it seems like the compiler could just pull from both places.
    As it stands, it is very cumbersome to have to create an entire subclass of Skin just to change the source of an image. Alternatively, I could subclass button to have the style property declared, but that seems very inelegant. Thoughts?

    Good to know what I am doing is correct. I think the inline "style" attribute you proposed seems the most appealing, if not only for its congruency with xhtml.
    Alternatively, since really what styles boil down to are just methods for parameterizing skins, it could be cool if there was something like the following:
    <s:Button>
         <s:skin>
              <local:ImageButtonSkin source="@Embed(...);" />
         </s:skin>
    </s:Button>
    Or maybe have the have the skin style attributes be defined in their own namespace, e.g.:
    <s:Button  myskin:source="@Embed(...);" />
    That way the compiler wouldn't have to make 2 passes to guess at what skin is applied to the component, it would just have to lookup the skin implementation corresponding to the namespace.
    Just randomly brainstorming, thanks for your response.

  • Converting local character styles (overrides) to proper styles

    Hi all,
    I've been handed a document that has no styles defined at all. All styling is done the local character styles ("overrides").
    This tutorial http://www.lynda.com/InDesign-tutorials/160-Convert-local-formatting-character-styles/8532 4/192449-4.html shows how to do a preflight, that detects all of the overrides, which is great, but you still have to manually fix them.
    The fastest way I've found so far is to do a search for a particular font-size/font-type, and then apply a proper character style to each match, until the overrides are all gone. But maybe there's a faster way? E.g. is it possible to "select all matching text" (as you can do in Google Docs), that would select all text matching that font-size/type, and then with one click apply a style to all selected text?
    Or maybe there's another way to convert all text matching e.g. font-size/font-type into a character style?
    Thanks!
    Bjoern

    The auto-char styles script tries to be semi-intelligent: It ignores the underlying paragraph style completely. Instead, for each paragraph, it checks which is the longest continuous run of formatting in that paragraph (textStyleRange). That formatting is considered the "underlying formatting of the paragraph", and any other formatting in that paragraph is considered an override, and has an appropriate character created (if necessary) and applied to it.
    The only exception to that is "italics", which is always considered an override, even there is more italics than regular in the paragraph (something that can happen in a bibliography entry, for instance).
    So, for instance, with the formatting you give as an example ("No style, + Arial Bold + size: 24 + Leading 28"), where everything but the final paragraph return has that applied, Auto-Char Styles will not apply a character style to most of the text, and apply an appropriate char style to the final enter only.
    That way, "all" that remains is to go through the document creating and applying paragraph styles as necessary, knowing that all local overrides have been styled with an appropriate char style.

  • Why is my book rejected because of the table of contents?

    Why is my book rejected because of the table of contents?
    I have submitted a chidlren's book, so there are not multiple chapters.  There is only one "chapter" which is teh entire 40-page book.
    IBook Author automatically creates a table of contents, which just has one chapter.
    When I click on the chapter, it does not go to the next page.  So once someone downloads the book from ibook, they are stuck on the table of contents page.
    That seems to be a big reason for why it is getting rejected, although the actual text is cryptic:
    6.1.4. Incomplete/Inaccurate Functional Table of Contents
    The EPUB's spine in the NCX is used to create the table of contents in iBooks and provides a direct navigational link to the appropriate sections of the book. Since it is a key element to the customer's interaction with a book, all EPUB spines must contain a complete listing of all chapters or book sections.

    If you know what makes it not work....fix it.
    The text is simply picked out from the nearest applicable cause.

  • Howto always clear paragraph style overrides?

    Using Indesign Cs5.
    I'm going to import loads of incopy-text that has already ben placed on other layouts. The problem is that these texts contains some paragraph styles overrides that I do not want to include in the new document.
    Question: is there some way to tell indesign to automatically clear paragraph style overrides?

    Reading through that article, it appears that added styles will be ignored with certain exceptions that in turn are overrideable in ID. But I am working in the blind here.
    I know there are GREP routines you can use to set chosen paragraph styles to any other and it is fast to do. Search the forum for these.
    Because I work by myself and don't receive anything but funky Word or text documents that I fully set in ID, I haven't faced what you are.
    Hopefully someone who does use IC will come along to actually help you.

  • How do I prevent unwanted paragraph style overrides when exporting an epub

    I am having trouble controlling the size of a  logo in an e-pub. Actually, it's only a problem with Amazon's Kindle which seems to insist on enlarging the image to the full screen width. So, I need a robust command in my CSS to override Kindle's preference. Seems easy. I placed the logo into my In Design layout in a picture box with the object style "frontmatterlogo" which should export into a div of the same name. Which it does. So far so good. However, In Design insists on creating a paragraph style override (see bold in the code below) which disregards the  frontmatterlogo settings I've written in to my CSS in favour of it's own image settings which correspond to the size of the placed image. Currently, I've just put together a hacked solution by writing a class for para-style-override into my CSS. It's an inelegant solution but seems to work for all the other e-readers. But, as mentioned, it doesn't work on the Kindle.
    Anyone have any idea what is causing these overrides and how I might prevent them so my div class can take over?
    Alan

    Thanks for getting back so quickly, Bob.
    I'm using Version 5.5. I have basically the same problem when the object is anchored. In the case below, I created a new paragraph style for the line on which the logo would be anchored, also mapping to the frontmatterlogo entry in my CSS. This time, no paragraph-style-override is added but In Design still adds it's own image dimensions corresponding to the size at which the image was placed in the layout. This overrides the settings in my CSS and, I suspect, might be what's allowing the Kindle settings to take over as well. I had kind of resigned myself to fixing this in the code  on a book by book basis, which is fine if the only images the book contains is a cover and a title page logo. But I'm worried about what happens when I have to create an e-pub from a photo-heavy book. You can see how it would be ideal to create a few specific object styles for different image situations in In Design and have them map them to specific div styles in my CSS. Basically it's a workflow issue. This would minimize the amount of after-the-fact coding our already swamped designers would have to do.
    It's so obvious in the code where the problem lies, and so I just have a feeling that there may be a simple fix. If only I knew why In Design felt obliged to specify the image size.

  • Why Are My Text Align Buttons Grayed Out?

    My users are unable to center text when edited pages in CS3 and CS4. The standard paragraph alignment buttons are grayed out.
    All the users of my site have Admin role, and I have set up the role to allow unrestricted editing. And "Allow Users to Apply Styles"... At screenshot of some of my settings is attached. I don't see why Contribute is not allowing this basic element to work.
    Why Are My Text Align Buttons Grayed Out?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I experienced the very same issue, but found an interesting quick-fix that worked for us.
    Several of my webpage content managers reported that they could not change the text alignment in pages created using Dreamweaver nested templates. We use nested editable regions in order to restrict portions of the pages (i.e. banners and navigation menus) from being edited.
    I found that Contribute CS4 could realign text in some parts of the affected pages, but not others.
    Further exam revealed that Contribute could change the alignment on any text that was inside a table on those pages. If I inserted a table and then cut-n-pasted the problem text into the table, the text lost its style/formatting, but it could then have its alignment changed.
    Any text not inside a table could not have the alignment changed by Contribute and changing its style/formatting made no difference.
    One note though: It was interesting that after pasting the text into a table, if I selected a chunk of text, the alignment buttons grayed out again. However, if I simply clicked on the line of text (did not select it), the buttons remained active and the text alignment could be changed.
    I don't know why it is happening. The nested regions were working fine, or so I thought, until recently.
    The above is a quick-fix and got my page content managers back online, but I'm still searching for a long-term solution if anyone has one.
    Good luck...

    To all and anyone
    The subject says it all...
    Why are some sort order texts ghosted rather then solid black?
    Thanks!
    Fred

    The ghosted/grayed values correspond with auto sorting. Auto sorting drops the leading articles, a/an/the, and variations in other languages, so that for example, The Beatles sorts as Beatles under B unless you explicitly override the auto sort by putting The Beatles in the sort value so that it sorts under T.

    Hi Thiyagu,
    you are asking for the structure of the DOM (document object model).
    There are several charts of the hierarchical structure of the DOM, e.g. in tree view.
    You may search for them with Google.
    To find out, who's the parent of an object, you can check the name of the constructor of it's parent:
    myObject.parent.constructor.name
    You can also climb up the parents within a loop.
    To catch the constructor of a selected object and it's parents, grandparents ... up to the 'primal father' APPLICATION in a loop you may try this short and simple code:
    var myData = new Array;
    if (app.selection.length > 0)
         var myObject = app.selection[0];
         myData.push(myObject.constructor.name);
         do
              myObject = myObject.parent;
              myData.push(myObject.constructor.name)
         } while (myObject.constructor.name != 'Application')
         alert('Genealogy\r' + myData.join('\r'));
    But there are also parents like parentTextFrame or parentStory.
    This special parents your would not find out with the simple code above.
    To read more about this basic things about the structure of the document object model (and other basics) I want to recommend Peter Kahrel's Scripting InDesign CS3/4 with JavaScript to you.

    Why are my emails aborted when im trying to send pictures?

    What is the size of the email attachments you are trying to send?  Many email providers limit the message content size some where in the 2-3 MB range, some larger some smaller.  If your photos are multile MBs that could cause the provider to reject the email.
    Try resaving a rejected photo to a smaller size/resolution and see if it goes successfully.
